Great thread.

Everybody has their own criteria, and that's cool. For me, it's Gibby's shot in '88. It has a bit of everything: a great athletic play considering the opponent (the great Eck) and the flick of the bat with no drive but still launching the ball over the fence, the drama of the situation (watching the whole bottom of the ninth inning unfold is enthralling), the sheer unexpectedness of it, and of course the voice of God calling it (Vin Scully) alongside the legendary Joe G. And while Carter's HR is worthy of consideration, to me, it *merely* won the game that won the World Series (I use merely kind of ironically; not to minimize it, but just for comparison). Gibson's HR essentially won the World Series for a huge underdog by winning that game. It turned everything around. It has no comparable.

Side note: Jack Buck's CBS radio call was pretty awesome, too. And, lesser known, Don Drysdale's call on local LA radio was amazing - it can be found here (audio only): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpsqaSJkovw

As far as great throws in big moments go, this play deserves some consideration. Granted, it was in a loss, in a series his team lost, but still... Several components make it great: 1) One-run World Series game, 8th inning, 2) Joe comes out of nowhere, making it unexpected, 3) Jimmy's arm was toast - no way he was gonna be able to make that throw, 4) an absolute perfect throw, 5) excellent blocking of home, 6) a collision at the plate, and 7) Yeager holds on.

There have been so many great plays in baseball! That's one reason we love the game so much. Any time you watch, you might see something incredible that you never saw before.

This one, Kenny Lofton climbing the wall to rob B.J. Surhoff of a home run, is forever etched in the memories of Cleveland baseball fans.

But I could just have easily picked any number of plays by shortstop Omar Vizquel... And when he was playing next to Roberto Alomar...wow!
