MARCH 30, 1938 NHL SEMI-FINALS The semi-finals could not quite match the drama of the opening round but even though both series ended in sweeps they certainly made things interesting. The Toronto Maple Leafs, as expected, beat the Rangers in two straight games but not before New York made things interesting. The series began in New York but it was the visitors who dominated, posting a 4-1 victory as Syd Howe and Syl Apps each had a pair of points for Toronto. Toronto completed the sweep with a 3-2 win on home ice but the Rangers forced the Leafs to overtime with Busher Jackson getting the winner 7:23 into the first overtime period. Syl Apps and Flash Hollett added the other Toronto tallies while Oscar Asmundson and Babe Pratt replied for the Rangers. Fresh off a three overtime marathon to end the first round the Chicago Black Hawks immediately were met with a double overtime game in the semi-final opener with Boston. Ellie Pringle was the hero for Chicago, scoring 58 seconds into the second overtime on a setup from opening round overtime hero Aubrey Webster. Like Webster, Pringle was an unlikely hero, having played just 6 career NHL games in real life. In the sim the 26 year old defenseman has spent the better part of 8 seasons in the NHL but has scored just 21 goals in his career and just once in the playoffs prior to this game. At home for Game Two the Black Hawks got a first period goal from none other then Ellis 'Ellie' Pringle but Boston tied it up on a Gordie Drillon marker early in the second. The score would stay tied at 1 until Jack Riley, on a setup from Aubrey Webster, buldged the twine behind Boston's Tiny Thompson at 17:36 of the third period to give the Black Hawks a 2-1 vcitory and a berth in the Stanley Cup Finals against Toronto. The Hawks won their only Stanley Cup in 1928-29 and have not been in the finals since 1932-33 when Toronto beat them 3 games to one. The Leafs, on the other hand, have won the last two Stanley Cups, 4 of the last five, six of the last 8 and a total of 8 Stanley Cups overall - more than any other team. The Finals will be a best-of-five series. THE WEEK AHEAD Huge sporting weekend coming up. Tomorrow we have the start of The Masters tournament from Augusta and Joe Louis making a title defense at Comiskey Park against Harry Thomas. The next day, Friday, we also have game one of the Stanley Cup Finals from Toronto. On Saturday it's the Final Four semi-finals and Sunday gives us the end of the Masters plus Game Two of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Leafs and Chicago. That will have me all caught up and ready for the baseball season to begin, which should not be too long as the commissioner is just finishing the off-season movement from our free agent draft.

Boxing and day one of the Masters
April 1, 1938 LOUIS MAKES SHORT WORK OF CHALLENGER The World Heavyweight Title fight between Joe Louis and Harry Thomas was over practically before it began as the champ took less than a minute to earn a knockout victory. Just over 45 seconds into the round Thomas walked right into a wicked cross from Louis and dropped like a ton of bricks. The challenger struggled to get up, reaching his knees at the count of 6 before toppling back over. The final call was a knockout for Louis at the 59 second mark.It was the third defense for Louis since winning the title with a unanimous decision victory over James J Braddock a year ago. The 34-1 champ stopped Tommy Farr last August, Nathan Mann in February and now Thomas all by knockout. It is widely expected his next title defense will be against Max Schmeling, who is slated to fight Steve Dudas in Germany in two weeks. Schmeling is the only fighter to beat Louis. THE MASTERS Byron Nelson and Johnny Revolta are the co-leaders at the end of the opening round of the fifth annual Masters golf tournament from Augusta. At stake is total prize money of $5,000 including a winners share of $1,500. In real life Henry Picard was the winner in an event that did not start until Saturday because of poor weather conditions. Picard finished the event at 3 under par, 2 strokes ahead of Ralph Guldahl and Harry Cooper. It was the first of two career major titles for Picard. A victory in the sim seems unlikely for Picard, who carded a 2 over par 74 on the opening round.NELSON AND REVOLTA SHARE EARLY LEAD AT AUGUSTA Here is the leaderboard after the first round Code:

Stanley Cup FInals : Game One
APRIL 1, 1938 LEAFS OFFENSE MAKES FOOLS OF HAWKS The Toronto Maple Leafs completely dominated the Chicago Black Hawks on an April Fool's Day opener to the Stanley Cup Finals. The outcome was never in doubt as the two-time defending Cup champions took the lead just under 3 minutes into the contest and coasted to a 5-0 whitewashing of Chicago. Regular season scoring champ Syl Apps led the way with a goal and two assists for Toronto while Syd Howe added 3 helpers. Art Jackson, Busher Jackson and Bingo Kampman rounded out the Toronto scoring. The score could have been much worse had it not been for the exceptional goaltending of veteran Chicago goalie Charlie Gardiner, who was peppered with 71 shots. Moe Roberts faced just 17 in the Toronto net.

1938 MASTERS DAY TWO The weather played havoc with day two scores which ballooned, especially in the later groups as the wind and rain picked up. Byron Nelson had an extremely inconsistent round, picking up 5 birdies but still ended up at 2 over par due to a pair of double-bogeys and 3 other bogeys. As a result he dropped out of a tie for first and sits two shots off the lead in a tight pack of golfers. Johnny Revolta, a St. Louis native who won his only career reak life major in the 1935 US Open, continued to hold a share of the lead after carding an even par 72 today. He is tied with Horton Smith, but 13 other golfers are within 4 shots of the lead. Here is the leaderboard after the second round Code:

The game was tight throughout with the schools never being separated by more than 5 points but in the end the Huskies, behind 22 points from senior guard Jim Watson, proved to be too much for the Maroons, who entered the 32 team field as a 7th seed. MASTERS DAY THREE BYRON NELSON TAKES THE LEAD After a poor round in the wind yesterday, Byron Nelson had a much better day in calm conditions Saturday, finishing with a 4 under par 68 to move into the lead at Augusta with 18 holes remaining. Nelson struggled at Amen Corner (holes 11,12 and 13) yesterday playing them in 3 over par thanks in a big part due to a double bogey on the 11th but he did much better this time around, notching two birdies and a par to help him move ahead of Johnny Revolta and into sole possession of the lead. The field has seperated quite a bit as well, with just Revolta 1 stroke back of Nelson while in third place we have Horton Smith and Paul Runyon at 4 strokes off the pace of the 26 year old Nelson, who in real-life won his first major at Augusta in 1935. Here is the leaderboard after the third round Code:
1938 MASTERS - DAY 3 Byron Nelson 67 74 68 -7 Johnny Revolta 67 72 71 -6 Horton Smith 68 71 74 -3 Paul Runyon 71 69 73 -3 Al Borsch 71 71 72 -2 Clarence Clark 71 74 69 -2 Bobby Cruikshank 69 71 74 -2 Willie Goggin 72 74 68 -2 Jimmy Demaret 72 71 72 -1 Frank Moore 70 72 73 -1 Ed Oliver 72 74 69 -1 April 3, 1938 GARDINER'S HEROICS CAN'T STOP LEAFS Charlie Gardiner came up with one of the greatest goaltending displays in Stanley Cup history but in the end it wasn't enough as his Chicago Black Hawks fell 2-1 in overtime to Toronto to fall behind 2 games to none in the Best of Five Stanley Cup Finals. Gardiner made 78 saves on the night including 26 in a scoreless third period to force the overtime before Syl Apps finally beat up 16:23 into the extra period with a short-handed goal on a breakaway. Both regulation time goals came in the second period as Doc Romnes delighted the capacity crowd at Chicago Stadium with the first goal of the game to stake the Black Hawks to a 1-0 lead but Mud Bruneteau tied things up for the Leafs on a rebound late in the second period. Toronto can wrap up the series with a victory on home ice on Tuesday.

NELSON AND REVOLTA TIE FOR MASTERS LEAD AFTER 72 After 72 holes the 1938 Masters golf tournament has failed to declare a winner as Byron Nelson and Johnny Revolta finished tied for the lead. Under the current rules the two golfers will compete in a 18 hole playoff tomorrow to decide a champion. (Note in 1935 there was a 36 hole playoff and the next one in 1942 was an 18 hole playoff so I decided to go with 18). Nelson forced the playoff with a birdie on 18 in what was a wild ride for both golfers. Nelson entered the day with a one stroke lead on Revolta but promptly surrendered that when he took a bogey on the first hole. It was uneven golf as each of them had carded a double bogey by the fifth hole but they remained tied. Nelson then found himself two stokes back as Revolta birdied the 7th while Nelson took a bogey. As they finished the back nine Revolta seemed in complete control with a 4 stroke lead but Nelson chipped away at it with 5 birdies on the back nine including back to back birdies on 17 and 18. Revolta, nursing a one stroke lead at the time, matched Nelson on 17 but could not do the same on the 18th forcing the second playoff in Masters history. (Gene Sarazen beat Craig Wood in a playoff in 1935. Sarazen, by the way, won the event in my sim last season.) Here is the leaderboard after the fourth round Code:

Behind 16 points each from senior guards Paul Tobin and Jim Watson the Huskies topped Illinois 60-52 in the title game. Tremendously accurate shooting and work on the boards proved the difference for Washington as the Huskies shot 54% compared to just 40% accuracy from the Illini while winning the rebound battle 36-20. Illinois had led 30-26 at the break and were up by 9 points with 15 minutes remaining in the game but then Illinois shooters got cold and the Illini, who had just 1 turnover prior to that point, coughed the ball up 4 times in a 5 minute span and suddenly Washington was ahead 51-47 with 10 minutes remaining in the contest. The Huskies fed on that momentum and never trailed again, stretching their lead to it's final margin of 8 points. This year's win helps alleviate the sting Washington felt a year ago when they were ranked #1 in the nation but fell to eventual champ Ohio State in the final four. Washington won it's only previous title in 1932-33. The Huskies also lost in the title game the following season. For Illinois, it was their second loss in a title game as the fell to Columbia in 1922-23 after winning a National Title each of the two previous years. The Illini had also won in 1930-31. Code:

MILLERS EYE RETURN TO PLAYOFFS IN '38 With the start of a new baseball season fast approaching the Minneapolis Millers are feeling pretty confident about their ability to return to the playoffs and perhaps even win their second title in three seasons. On paper at least, the club looks much improved offensively with the biggest changes coming in the outfield courtesy the addition of 19 year old wonderkind Ted Williams and the acquisition of veteran Chuck Klein, who hit .352 with 16 homers for Milwaukee a season ago. Klein was brought in at the expense of pitching, to try and upgrade the offense, which was in the bottom half of the league last season. The 33 year old Indianapolis native will in all likelihood be just a one year player as the slot he is occupying will undoubtedly go to Ted Williams when he requires one next season. The team defense should also be much improved as Red Kress and his 65 errors in 115 games have returned to the St Louis Browns. Kress (.313,9,76) handled himself well at the plate but every ball hit to him at shortstop was an adventure. Newcomer John Mihalic comes to the Millers after two seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies of the National League. Mihalic, who hit .301 for the Phillies last season, should provide solid defense at second base allowing veteran Miller minor slot player Rabbit Warstler to shift back to his natural shortstop position full-time. Warstler (.286,12,71) might not make up for the departure of Kress with his bat but will be a huge upgrade with the glove. The other change is behind the plate with 25 year old Otto Denning agreeing to a four year deal to play for the Millers after hitting .338 for Elmira of the NY-Penn League a season ago. Denning was a real life Miller until getting promoted to Cleveland in 1942. The returnees in the starting lineup are 1B Earl Browne (.316,11,43), third baseman Fresco Thompson (.275,6,60) and center fielder Buzz Arlett (.299,18,66). Pitching was the Millers strength a year ago but Minneapolis was forced to release Archie McKain (16-5, 3.28) to free up a slot for Klein. McKain was quickly signed by Toledo but the Millers are hoping newcomer Roy Parmelee, who was 12-7 for the World Series champion St Louis Cardinals a year ago, can replace McKain without requiring an Elite Slot this season. Carl Hubbell (23-21, 2.44), Denny Galehouse (25-18, 3.38) and Vern Kennedy (13-14, 4.35), all slotted, will return to fill out the rotation. The Millers won their American Association crown in it's first season as a 'major league' but finished third last season, missing the two team playoff by just a single game to second place Toledo. The Mud Hens would lose the American Series to the first place Kansas City Blues.

YANKEES MOVING ON FROM LAZZERI For the past twelve seasons the name Tony Lazzeri has regularly been penciled in as the New York Yankees starting second baseman. However, after the 34 year old endured his least productive major league season (.257/.358/.397) last year it appears the Yankees are ready to turn the job over to 26 year old Don Heffner. Lazzeri, who also struggled defensively a year ago, is expected to remain with the team as a reserve infielder but it appears Heffner, who hit .313 in a limited role last season and provided superior defense, has won the job for Opening Day. Lazzeri has played 1,677 career major league games - all in a Yankee uniform - and is a .292 career hitter. He has over 1,800 career hits and 165 homeruns and certainly has to be considered the greatest Yankee second baseman while playing a key role on World Series winning teams in 1927, 1928 and 1932. However, he hit just .162 in the past two World Series and was part of a New York batting order that struggled mightily vs the Cardinals this past October. The Yankees have enjoyed great success in the American League each of the past two seasons, posting a 211-97 record during that time and winning back to back pennants. However, the World Series has been a different story as the Yankees, despite a dominant offense and 3 outstanding pitchers in Lefty Gomez, Red Ruffing and Johnny Broaca, came up empty on both attempts as they lost to the Giants in 6 games two years ago and to St Louis in 5 last October. So far it has been very quiet out of New York on the trade front with no player transactions made at all, but one has to think something much bigger than just replacing Lazzeri in the starting lineup with Heffner has to occur for the Yankees to avoid another October collapse.

BYRON NELSON WINS MASTERS TITLE IN PLAYOFF In real life Byron Nelson won the 1942 Masters in a playoff over Ben Hogan. It was Nelson's second major tournament win in a playoff with his first being the 1939 US Open. In this sim his first major win came just earlier than real life as Nelson claimed the 1938 Green Jacket with a playoff victory over Jimmy Revolta. Revolta led after nine by one stroke but Nelson got that one back with a birdie on the par five 13th hole. They would match par for par for the next 3 holes before the event turned on 17. Nelson birdied it while Revolta took a bogey to go down two strokes and Nelson's birdie on 18 sealed his first major victory of my sim. Here is the playoff scorecard: Code:

Yip Radley late in the second period and Flash Hollett midway through the third were the only Leafs to score on Gardiner, who faced 57 shots in the game and an almost unbelievable 208 in the three game series. Gardiner really should have been given the Conn Smythe Award (although it won't really exist for another 25 odd years) as playoff MVP but that honour instead went to Toronto center Syl Apps who assisted on both Toronto goals in the game and led all playoff point producer's with 9 including a playoff best 3 goals. Apps was an outstanding player in real life but with the development engine on (instead of recalculate ratings annually) he is quickly becoming a Wayne Gretzky type player in this sim. He just turned 23 in the sim and in his two seasons he led the NHL in scoring twice and seems a lock to win his second straight Hart Trophy as regular season MVP. Code:

PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL: THE MIDWEST ASSOCIATION With our American Association becoming a major league in baseball recently I thought I would add professional basketball in the mix as there was a league based in the Midwest that eventually became the National Basketball League, which was the forerunner of the NBA. The Minneapolis Lakers actually began in that league and it had at, one time or another, teams in several American Association cities. So pro basketball gets added to the universe in the form of a 6 team league called the Midwest Basketball Association. The NBA's roots can be traced to the Midwest loop as at some point in the late 1930's the midwest based organization wanted to have a larger footprint and was renamed the National Basketball League. In my universe the 6 Midwest clubs will continue in that format as a league I will sim until 1941, at which point it will be renamed the National Basketball League and will absorb some teams from the East including what will eventually become the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks and Philadelphia Warriors. It is certainly not accurate historical-wise but does work to allow me to add the solo pro basketball league I wanted for my college stars to continue playing. The league will begin in 1924 with fictional players but each rookie class will be made up of graduates from my college sim league The initial six teams in the league are the Minneapolis Lakers, Columbus Athletic Supply, Fort Wayne General Electrics, Milwaukee All Stars, Indianapolis Kautskys and Toledo Chevrolets. Here is the history of the league leading up to where we currently sit in April of 1938. -Four of the six league teams were owned by the same groups that run American Association baseball in the same city: Minneapolis, Columbus, Milwaukee and Toledo. At the end of the first season the owners of baseball's Indianapolis Indians purchased ownership of that city's basketball franchise from grocery store owner Frank Kautsky. Despite officially changing the team nickname to the Jets, everyone continued to call the club the Kautskys throughout their existence. - Indianapolis proved to be the class of the league through the first decade, winning 3 of the first four league titles and 7 championships in 10 years. - In the first couple of years the league was semi-pro and made up primarily of homegrown local players but eventually collegiate stars came flocking to the loop. The first superstar in the league was neither homegrown nor a college star as Milwaukee found a 7'0" superstar by the name of Abraao Nave. The center was born in Brazil but came to America with his parents as a youth and would be the most dominant player of the first decade, winning 3 MVP awards and being an all-star 10 consecutive years. Despite his heroics on the court, the All-Stars could never surround Nave with a strong supporting cast and would win just one league title, although they did make the league finals 5 times but lost to Indianapolis in each of the other four. Code:
Here are the league champions each year: 1924-25 Indianapolis Kautskys 1925-26 Columbus Athletic Supply 1926-27 Indianapolis Kautskys 1927-28 Indianapolis Kautskys 1928-29 Fort Wayne General Electrics 1929-30 Indianapolis Kautskys 1930-31 Milwaukee AllStars 1931-32 Indianapolis Kautskys 1932-33 Indianapolis Kautskys 1933-34 Indianapolis Kautskys 1934-35 Columbus Athletic Supply 1935-36 Indianapolis Kautskys The defending champion is Fort Wayne. Just prior to the start of the season the club was purchased by Fred Zollner and and his company which made pistons for each of the major auto manufacturers. Zollner, who would play a key role in the formation of the NBA in the near future, change it's nickname from the General Electics to Pistons and saw his new club win it's second Midwest League title in his inaugural season at the helm. Game five was all Toledo as Chevrolets won easily by an 81-53 score. Jack McCracken, who was league MVP a year ago and a former All Ivy League player at Columbia, led the way with 18 points in the win. 1937-38 MBA FINALS: FT WAYNE VS TOLEDO The series had the defending champion Zollner Pistons playing against Toledo, a squad that had never reached the league finals before. The Pistons took the opener on home court, winning 66-56 behind 19 points from Sherman Lombard, formerly of Dartmouth. Toledo came up short despite a solid game from McCracken, who had 14 points and 9 boards. Game Two had a nearly identical result as the Pistons won 66-57 to go up two games to none. McCracken again came up big for Toledo in a losing cause, getting 17 points but Bill Chaput led all players with 22 for the Pistons. Back on their home court for Game Three the Chevrolets remaining alive with McCracken scoring 23 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in a 68-56 Toledo win. Game Four would also go to Toledo as McCracken had another double-double (21 pts, 15 reb) in a 66-54 victory to force a fifth and deciding game. The final game was a terrific battle with multiple lead changes late but ultimately the home side would prevail with Ft Wayne winning it's second straight title following a 74-71 victory. Lloyd Paulson, who had previously spent some time with Toledo, led the Pistons offense with 20 points while Chaput had 19 and Pi DiMarco, a defensive specialist who was named playoff MVP for the second straight season, added 18. McCracken, double-teamed the entire game, was held to 12 points in the loss but Jerry Shorter, who was a college teammate of DiMarco at Wisconsin led the Chevrolets with a 24 point game. The pro basketball game will likely just be updated at the end of each season rather then regularly throughout the winter like the college hoops and NHL seasons.

APRIL 1, 1938 BASEBALL ROUND-UP The 1938 season is close to opening day but before we get there, baseball fans in the midwest will get a treat in the form of some pre-season exhibition games. More details in this press release from the official American Association homepage. ![]() The two leagues did play some pre-season games against each other a year ago but at that time under former Commissioner Landis Major League Baseball only agreed to play games in their home parks. Next week will be the first time MLB teams have travelled to American Association parks since the AA declared it's professional status prior to the 1936 campaign. GORDON GOES NUMBER ONE IN MLB DRAFT The St Louis Browns selected second baseman Joe Gordon first overall in what appears to be a fairly weak draft class. The 22 year old, who in real spent 11 seasons in the major leagues with the Yankees and Cleveland, will likely step right in to the heart of a weak Browns batting order. Here is the complete first round of the draft: Code:
1938 MLB ROOKIE DRAFT ROUND ONE 1- Browns: Joe Gordon 2B 2- Phillies: Taffy Wright OF 3- Brooklyn: Nick Etten 1B 4- Washington: Max E West OF 5- Athletics: Sam Chapman OF 6- Bees: Willard Hershberger C 7- Detroit: Ernie Koy OF 8- White Sox: Chick Workman OF 9- Pittsburgh: Joe Grace OF 10- Cincinnati: George Myatt 3B 11- Red Sox: Mark Christman SS 12- Cubs: Heinie E Mueller 2B 13- Giants: Don Lang 3B 14- Cleveland: Johnny Lucadello 2B 15- Cardinals: Dario Lodigiani 2B 16- Yankees: Ray Mack 2B HEILMANN WELCOMED TO HALL OF FAME Baseball's second class to be added to the Hall of Fame was much smaller than it's first with only long-time Detroit Tiger Harry Heilmann appearing on the required 75% of the ballots to qualify. Heilmann was pencilled in on 85.1% of the votes submitted. Carl Mays was second, but garnered only 71% support. Heilmann will join the five inductees from last year : Walter Johnson, Tris Speaker, Ty Cobb, Pete Alexander and Eddie Collins. (Babe Ruth will not be eligible until 1941). Heilmann played for the Tigers from 1914 when he joined the club as a 19 year old and remain in Detroit until the 1930 season when he moved on to Cincinnati, with whom he would spend his final two seasons. A lifetime .342 hitter, he won 4 American League batting titles including hitting .403 in 1923. He retires with 2,660 career hits- 20th most all-time. APRIL 1938 NHL ALL-STAR TEAM ANNOUNCED The National Hockey League has named it's annual first and second team all-stars and the list is much more diverse than it was a year ago when the entire first team was comprised of Toronto Maple Leafs. While the Leafs did win the Stanley Cup again, they did not have a monopoly on the all-star selections as only two Leafs- league MVP Syl Apps and defenseman Flash Hollett - made the first team while goaltender Moe Roberts was the lone Toronto player to be selected as a second-team all-star. Here are the All-Star teams Code:

APRIL 4, 1938 AMERICAN ASSOCIATION WINS FIRST WEEKEND OF SPRING CHALLENGE WITH MLB The American Association has made great strides in it's efforts to be considered a major league on par with the American and National League clubs and while they are only spring training games, the AA has to be pleased with it's showing this weekend. Highlighted by the American Series champion Kansas City Blues sweeping 3 games from the St Louis Browns the new league enjoyed a 14-10 advantage in the opening set of games, all played in MLB parks. The second half of the series will be held in American Association stadiums next weekend. It is the second year of the series, with the MLB squads winning 19 of 32 contests played a year ago. All eyes next weekend will be focused on Kansas City where they Blues will meet the World Series Champion St Louis Cardinals in a 3 game series. While the Blues were sweeping the Browns the Cardinals had a tough time against what was one of the weaker AA squads a year ago, dropping two of three to the Indianapolis Indians. NCAA BASKETBALL AWARDS Fresh off of Washington's National Title Game victory over Illinois here are the post-season awards for the 1937-38 NCAA season. Last year Washingtn guard Paul Tobin was the National Player of the Year as a junior but despite helping his school to a title this year Tobin did not repeat. He did make Second Team All-American and was the Pacific Coast Conference Player of the Year. It was quite a finish to Tobin's college career, one that saw him average 8.4 ppg and 4.4 apg in starting 67 games for the Huskies. He was a 2-time PCC player of the year to go along with one first team and one second team All-American selection. In real life Tobin went to high school in Akron and would go on to play in the National Basketball League for the Akron Firestones, helping them to a pair of league titles. It does not appear that he played college basketball at all. The NCAA MVP this season was Michigan senior forward Bart *Quinn. In real life Quinn played at Toledo and led the Rockets to the 1942 NIT title earning first team all-american honours along the way. He actually played college basketball after playing a season with the Fort Wayne General Electrics of the NBL. In the sim, Quinn was a three year starter at Michigan, averaging 11.3 ppg his senior season. Quinn becomes the first Wolverine to win National Player of the Year since Sylvester Cravens claimed the honour in 1901-02. Quinn is also the first Michigan player to make All-America first team in 12 years. Center Tip Cotton was the last one. Both Tobin and Quinn are expected to play in the Midwest Basketball Association next season. Here are the first, second and third team All-Americans. A * designates a real player as opposed to fictional game-generated players. Code:

Alabama's Mr Basketball as a senior, the fictional Leger started all 29 games at point guard for the Tigers and averaged 7.9 ppg. Code:

Apps' Toronto teammate Flash Hollett won the James Norris Trophy as the league's top defenseman for the second straight season. The goaltender award went to Detroit's Turk Broda as the 23 year old netminder claimed his first Vezina Trophy. Despite his club missing the playoffs, Broda led the NHL in saves, save percentage, shutouts and games played. Rangers rookie forward Clint Smith was named the Calder Trophy winner as top newcomer. The 24 year old Smith had 13 goals and 38 points in 47 games. Finally the Lady Byng Award for gentlemanly play went to Boston winger Bobby Bauer. The 23 year old, who was also a first team all-star for the first time in his 3 year NHL career, had 17 goals and 36 points while collecting just 12 minutes in penalties. Code:

Our online league is gearing up for the 1938 season with the second weekend of MLB-AA preseason games being simmed tomorrow and then the regular season begins Tuesday. Until then here is an update on this month's boxing match as Max Schmeling completes his final fight before the big rematch with Joe Louis - with the heavyweight title on the line this time.
In addition to baseball and the June Louis-Schmeling rematch we can also look forward to the NFL draft and golf's remaining majors. APRIL 16, 1938 SCHMELING IMPRESSIVE IN TUNE UP Max Schmeling looked very strong in what is expected to be his final tune-up before returning to America to face Joe Louis for the World Heavyweight Championship. Schmeling scored a 4th round TKO over American Steve Dudas in Hamburg, Germany last night to run his record to 52-7-4. Dudas did well for the first two rounds using a strategy to try and stay outside of Schmeling's powerful punches but he was badly hurt when the German connected with a huge punch early in the third round and as the fight neared the end of round four the referee decided Dudas had absorbed enough punishment and elected to stop the contest. Schmeling will finally get his title shot, facing Louis in New York at Yankee Stadium on June 22nd.

APRIL 17, 1938 AMERICAN ASSOCIATION HEADS IN TO SEASON ON A MAJOR HIGH Baseball's establishment may not have given the American Association it's due since the former AAA loop declared itself a Major League two seasons ago but after the events of the past two weeks the powers of the American and National League's may need to rethink things. In a 48 game exhibition series involving the 8 AA teams and 8 MLB teams the upstart league thoroughly dominated matters, posting a 29-19 record including going 5-1 against the World Series champion St Louis Cardinals. True, it was just preseason action and teams on both sides were using a number of young players in roles they would not see during the regular season but one can't help but hypothesize the gap between the leagues is narrowing. The highlight of the showcase was a 3 game series in Kansas City between the American Association champion Blues and the World Series winning St Louis Cardinals. The Cards, having dropped two of three at home to Indianapolis ths previous weekend, were swept in Kansas City with the Blues winning by scores of 7-4, 5-2 and 4-3. A 3-run homer in the 7th inning by a 21 year old rookie catcher named Clyde McCullough led Kansas City to the victory in Friday's opener despite 4 shutout innings from the Cardinals Dizzy Dean. The Blues would get to the St Louis bullpen again on Saturday breaking a 2-2 tie with a 3 run outburst in the bottom of the 7th and on Sunday young McCullough would be the hero again, delivering a walk-off 2-run homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth. McCullough, who joins Kansas City in this online league because he played for the Blues in real life in 1938 and 1939 before moving up to the Chicago Cubs, looks to be poised for a big season after hitting .538 in 5 spring games. Having a talented player not count against an Elite or Minor Slot is a key part of building a successful team in this online league. Under league rules each AA team has access to all of the players who actually played for that franchise in the current season and they can protect 4 Elite level and 2 minor league level players which comes from a combination of Negro Leaguers, young major leaguers from the midwest or former players that played in the AA in real life. With opening day on Tuesday here is a look at some key players on each of the American Association teams. ![]() COLUMBUS RED BIRDS (last year 85-69, 4th place) Elite slots: Ray Dandridge, Dick Sibert, Johnny Rizzo, Enos SlaughterColumbus holds the distinction of having the best record (.506 winning percentage) of a team yet to make the American Series. The Red Birds return almost all the same cast that won 85 games a year ago including second year pro Enos Slaughter (.309,24,94) and 24 year old 3B Ray Dandridge (.359,11,85). Max Macon (28-7, 3.70) had a breakout season as a 21 year old and will be leaned on heavily to anchor the rotation which also should feature fellow lefthanders Tony Freitas (16-14, 5.23) and Max Lanier (11-13, 5.30) along with righty Rip Schroeder (5-0, 3.08). A rookie to keep an eye on is speedy center fielder Sam Jethroe, a 21 year old rookie who will likely play every day. INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS (last year 64-90, 7th place) Elite slots: Lou Boudreau, Bill Brubaker, Josh Gibson, Dizzy TroutIt has been a rough couple of seasons for the Indians but the hope is athletic infielder Lou Boudreau will help. The 20 year old, in addition to his prowess at both second base and shortstop, just completed his junior season at Ohio State where he was a back-up guard for three seasons on a Buckeyes basketball team that enjoyed a National Title winning 1936-37 campaign. Boudreau is one of a number of newcomers tasked with the responsibility of changing the culture of a team that suffered through two very long losing seasons. Pitcher Elmer Riddle and outfielder Mike W McCormick are the other rookie newcomers while 1B Gene Hasson (.327,1,11) comes over from the Philadelphia Athletics where he played sparingly a year ago. Jimmy Wasdell (.336,10,49) won an American Series with Minnesota two seasons ago and despite his youthfulness (just 23) should add leadership as well veteran Johnny Niggeling (16-15) who won the Series with Kansas City last year. The key to the offense remains 26 year old catcher Josh Gibson (.323,19,73) while 22 year old Dizzy Trout (18-13) enters his third season with the Indians. KANSAS CITY (last year 1st place 92-62, won American Series) Elite Slots: Cool Papa Bell, Ival Goodman, Billy Herman, Al HollingsworthThe Blues incredible turnaround from last place in 1936 to American Series champions in 1937 can be almost entirely credited to their pitching staff, and in particular to the amazing season Ted Kleinahans enjoyed. Having won only 5 career big league games entering the season, the 38 year old led the AA in wins and ERA (30-9, 2.73) and was pitcher of the year as well as league MVP. The big question is can he can he come anywhere close in attempting to duplicate that feat? If so the Blues might be unstoppable after adding 24 year old rookie pitcher Tiny Bonham, rookie catcher Clyde McCullough as well as 3B Don Gutteridge, who comes over from Columbus. Lead-off man Cool Papa Bell missed half of the season with injury but still hit .312. At 37, age may start to be a concern but with Dale Alexander (.306,21,102), Billy Herman (.346,6,81) and Ival Goodman (.290,8,82) there is plenty of offensive talent. LOUISVILLE COLONELS (last year 69-85, 5th place) Elite Slots: Ken Heintzelman, Wayne LeMaster, Buck Leonard, Joe VosmikPitching was the big concern for the Colonels a year ago with only Elite Slot player Heintzelman (16-13, 4.09) being anything close to reliable. Frankie Gustine (.281,9,71) and rookie Pee Wee Reese give the Colonels an outstanding keystone combination while Vosmik (.359,13,84), Leonard (.299,21,90) and Gibby Breck (.290,23,101) provide the offense but there are concerns that little was done to upgrade the pitching. MILWAUKEE BREWERS (last year 67-87, 6th place. League's best record in 1936) Elite Slots: Martin Dihigo, Jeff Heath, Roy Huges, Ken KeltnerThe Brewers went from the best team in the league in 1936 to among the worst last year. The pitching staff was a nightmare a year ago and it does not appear much will change this season with none of the new additions looking like they will have a great impact. The new arms in Milwaukee are 25 year old Joe Gibbs, who was 10-9 for Kansas City a year ago, rookie Jesse Flores and a pair of ex-MLBers in Joe Gonzales (10 sv for Brooklyn) and Ken Jungels (1-0 in 5 appearances for the White Sox). The offense will be strong once again as long as Rudy York, who missed half the year last season, can regain his form of 1936 when he hit .338 with 32 homers. The 32 year old Dihigo was among the league leaders with a .351 batting average. MINNEAPOLIS MILLERS (last year 88-66 3rd place. Won inaugural AA series in 1936) Elite Slots: Denny Galehouse, Carl Hubbell, Vern Kennedy, Chuck KleinThe Millers big addition is 19 year old Ted Williams who makes his AA debut this year. Chuck Klein was signed in the off-season after being dropped by Milwaukee in order to hopefully improve the offense, which was among the weakest in the league a year ago. With Williams and Klein - who is likely a one year rental player and will be cut loose when Williams requires an elite slot next year - the offense should be much improved. Pitching had been a strong suit of the Millers a year ago with Hubbell, Galehouse and Kennedy all holding slots but the question is can ex-Cardinal Roy Parmelee replace the departed Archie McKain, who was released to make room for Klein. ST. PAUL SAINTS (last year 64-90, 7th place) Elite Slots: Monte Irvin, Satchel Paige, Johnny Rigney, Larry RosenthalIt has been a tough couple of seasons for the Saints but a big reason is the inability of Paige to stay healthy. Paige started just 27 games over the past two season and there are concerns the arm injuries he suffered may have lingering effects. Second year pro Tommy Henrich (.320,34,136) and 19 year old rookie Monte Irvin give Saints fans some cause for optimism but a healthy and effective Paige is a must for the Saints to show some improvement. TOLEDO MUD HENS (last year 89-65, 2nd place. Lost American Series in 7 games) Elite Slots: Paul Derringer, Lonny Frey, Archie McKain, Phil WeintraubThe Mud Hens picked up McKain, who was 16-5 for Minneapolis a year ago, but had to release 36 year old Turkey Stearnes to accommodate him. Stearnes hit .311 a year ago but missed significant time with injury so Toledo can survive without his bat. With McKain added to a rotation that already includes Derringer (22-14, 4.44) and Gene Schott (27-11, 3.70) the Mud Hens certainly have the pitching to get back in the playoff. Offense should come from Roy Cullenbine (.321,25,112) and Chet Laabs (.240,31,106), two players who are likely off to Detroit next season unless slotted. NFL DRAFT NEXT WEEK The Chicago Bears own the first pick in next week's NFL draft following their dismal 2-9-1 campaign in 1938. The Los Angeles Rams picked second and the New York Giants are third. The NFL champion Baltimore Colts own the 12th and final pick of each round. Here are the top 5 projected players in the draft pool 1938 NFL DRAFT MOCK TOP FIVE 1- Bruiser Kinard DE Mississippi: Kinard had 32 tackles including 8 tackles for losses for the 6-5 Rebels. In real life after his career at Ole Miss, Kinard spent a decade in the NFL and in 1950 was named Mississippi's greatest athlete of all time and in 1999 named to the college football all-century team. His young brother George is also a lineman with Mississippi in the sim. 2- John Mellus DT Penn State: A key force on the line for the 9-3 and 11th ranked Nittany Lions. Mellus had 6 tackles in their Bluebonnet Bowl win over Texas A&M. In real life Mellus, a Pennsylvania native, played his college ball at Villanova before spending a decade as an NFL lineman with the New York Giants, San Francisco and Baltimore. 3- Pete Tinsley G Georgia: Was an All-American and all SEC selection. The real life Pete Tinsley is in the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame after spending 9 seasons with the club following his college days. 4- Alex Wojciechowicz LB Harvard : 58 tackles to lead Ivy League schools. He went to Fordham in real life where he was a 2-time All-American before spending 15 years in the NFL with Detroit and Philadelphia. 5- Jack Berner QB Illinois : Threw for 901 yards and 8 touchdowns in 1937 in the sim. In real life Berner was named the Illinois team MVP in 1938. He did not play professionally and died of a heart attack in Germany during World War II. A second WWII casualty, Walter 'Tiger' Mayberry is also a possible first round pick. Mayberry quarterbacked Florida in my sim and was a 6th round pick in the 1938 draft in real life but he never played in the NFL. He was a fighter pilot in the war and died in Japan after his plane was shot down. Also worth noting is University of California defensive back Sam Chapman has a chance to be the first player selected in the both the first round of the Major League draft and the NFL draft. Chapman, an outfielder, was taken 5th overall by baseball's Philadelphia Athletics and is expected to be in their lineup when the season opens this week. He stands an excellent chance of being drafted as a cornerback and has hinted if it can be worked out he would be interested in participating in both sports professionally.

Hi TF, I saw you noted no 2 way players in football because the game doesn't allow it. I'd have to double check the College game but the Pro does let you have two way players. You can use "unlock Depth Charts" in settings to do it. Not sure how well the AI would use, but in commish mode you could set that up.

Monday April 18, 1938 MLB OPENING DAY AWAITS The Major League Baseball season opens today with action in two American League cities but much of the talk around the league centers on the defending World Series Champion St Louis Cardinals, who were swept in a weekend tune-up series by the American Association's Kansas City Blues. The Cardinals, who looked so dominant last October manhandling the powerful New York Yankees, appeared to have all kinds of trouble with the Blues and the Indianapolis Indians, who won two of three at Sportsman's Park the weekend prior. Recent history suggests a title defense is unlikely for the Cardinals, who lately have made it a habit of winning a World Series once every three years with titles in 1931, 1934 and last season, but the showing against the American Association has caused some to feel this might be a very long year for the redbirds. St Louis returns virtually the exact same roster that humbled the Yankees in October after winning the pennant by 14 games over both the Cubs and Giants. The outfield of Pepper Martin in right, Terry Moore in center and Joe Medwick in left remains unchanged and are the key, along with mighty first baseman Johnny Mize, to the St Louis offense. Charlie Gelbert and shortstop Leo Durocher will be back as well catcher Spud Davis. The only potential change is 20 year old rookie Dario Lodigiani may wrestle second base away from another young player, 23 year old Rusty Peters, who hit .254 a year ago. Other than #4 starter Roy Parmelee's defection to Minneapolis the pitching staff is also the same with the Dean brothers leading the way. Dizzy was 23-10 and won the Cy Young Award while Paul had a breakout 25-8 season. The starters were decent in spring play although Paul Dean got hit pretty good, but it was the bullpen and a lack of timely hitting that let the Cardinals down. The question is will that trend continue as the Cards start playing for real against Pittsburgh beginning tomorrow. NHL NEWS HOWIE MORENZ RETIRES Legendary Montreal Canadiens forward Howie Morenz has announced his retirement at age 36. Morenz, who spent his entire 15 year career with the Habs, leaves as the NHL's all-time goal scoring leader and second to Frank Boucher in points with 717. His 286 goals may not be the standard for long however, as his now former teammate Aurel Joliat, who trails Morenz by 6 goals, has plans to return for another season in Montreal. Morenz broke into the league as a 21 year old in 1923-24 with 15 goals and 25 points. He would win the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year and he would go on to win 2 Stanley Cups, 3 Art Ross Trophy's as scoring leader and claim the Hart Trophy as league MVP once. Nicknamed 'The Stratford Streak', Morenz played in 601 career regular season games and an additional 51 playoff contests. Code:

April 25, 1938 EVERYTHING IS JUST DUCKY IN ST LOUIS To paraphrase Mark Twain reports of the St Louis Cardinals demise were greatly exaggerated. After a dismal spring challenge series that saw the Cardinals drop 5 of 6 games to American Association clubs the team took out it's frustration on National League opponents in the season's opening week. The Cardinals scored 60 runs in 7 games including 23 in a win over Pittsburgh in the opening series and sit atop the National League standings with a 5-2 record. The biggest bat belonged to 26 year old St Louis outfielder Joe 'Ducky' Medwick, who socked 5 homers, drove in 15 runs and batted .433. The Cardinals also got big week's from Johnny Mize (.433,3,15) and Spud Davis (.480,2,6) while on the mound the Dean brothers were a combined 4-0 with Dizzy tossing a pair of complete game victories including a 4-hit shutout. The New York Yankees lead the way in the American League with a 6-1 record. New York's only loss came in extra innings to Washington. Offense is also the story at Yankee Stadium as the club leads the American League in runs scored while also having the fewest runs against in the loop. Big performance early came from catcher Bill Dickey (.386,3,14), third baseman Red Rolfe (.400,0,10) and first baseman Lou Gehrig (.333,2,8) while pitchers Lefty Gomez and Red Ruffing are both off to 2-0 starts. One Yankee who has struggled a bit early is third year outfielder Joe DiMaggio. The 23 year old reigning AL MVP did homer in the second game of the season but is batting just .242. Code:

NOTES FROM AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES Giants outfielder Mel Ott had his 29 game hitting streak, going back to last season, snapped in an 11-5 victory over the Cardinals. You can't fault Ott too much for it as he drew 4 walks in the game and then promptly started another streak with hits in each of the next two games. The 29 year old, who has won the NL MVP Award each of the past two seasons is hitting .280 so far on the year. The longest hitting streak since the sim started in 1936 belongs to Joe DiMaggio, who had a 33 gamer last summer........Johnny Mize hit 3 homeruns for St Louis in a game against the Giants last week. Mize joins John Stone, when he was with Washington in 1936, and the Red Sox' Jimmie Foxx as the only players to have a 3 homer game in the sim.......Speaking of Stone, it is very early but the Athletics' brass look like geniuses after acquiring the 32 year old outfielder from Washington over the winter. Stone, who flirted with .400 before eventually winning the AL batting title with a .378 average two seasons ago, endured a mediocre 1937 campaign but is red-hot to start this season with his new club, hitting .458 through his first 6 games..........A tough opening week for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who were shutout 3 times in their first 7 games. The Cardinals also surrendered 33 runs in back to back losses to St Louis to start the season. The Bucs have scored the fewest runs in the National League and surrendered the most against AMERICAN ASSOCIATION BLUES TAKE EARLY LEAD A look at the American Association standings after the opening week looks very much like the way things finished a year ago with the Kansas City Blues and Toledo Mud Hens at the top and the Milwaukee Brewers and St Paul Saints sitting in the basement. While Minneapolis' revamped offense and the Louisville Colonels are scoring a lot of runs it is the pitching of the Blues and Mud Hens that set them apart early. Each of the Blues 4 starters have already pitched their first victory with Al Hollingsworth leading the way at 2-0 despite a gaudy 5.48 era. The Blues finished the week by taking 2 of three from Toledo in what was a rematch of last year's American Series and might well be a preview of this year's. The Minneapolis Millers lead the league in just about every offensive category led by a great start from 39 year old Buzz Arlett (.464,4,14). Two newcomers in veteran pickup Chuck Klein (.424,1,6) and highly touted teenager Ted Williams (.387,2,7) but it is long-time Millers Arlett and first baseman Earl Browne (.429,4,9) who are having the biggest impact thus far. Pitching, at least beyond Carl Hubbell (2-1, 3.38) and Denny Galehouse (1-1, 2.08) is a big problem area and the Millers may have exasperated the situation by electing to retain Vern Kennedy over Archie McKain in the winter. McKain is off to an 0-2 start in his new home with Toledo but lost by scores of 1-0 and 2-1. Code:
AMERICAN ASSOCIATION STANDINS W L GB Kansas City 6 3 - Toledo 5 4 1.0 Minneapolis 4 4 1.5 Louisville 4 4 1.5 Columbus 4 4 1.5 Indianapolis 4 4 1.5 Milwaukee 3 5 2.5 St Paul 3 5 2.5 LEADERS AVG Buzz Arlett MIN .464 Julian Foster LOU .433 Earl Browne MIN .429 Enos Slaughter COL .429 Chuck Klein MIN .424 Roy Cullenbine TOL .312 HOME RUNS Buzz Arlett MIN 4 Earl Browne MIN 4 several tied with 2 RBI's Buzz Arlett MIN 13 Earl Browne MIN 9 Roy Cullenbine TOL 9 Julian Foster LOU 9 Buck Leonard LOU 9 Mike McCormick IND 9 Enos Slaughter COL 9 AMERICAN ASSOCIATION NOTES The Indianapolis Indians should be putting in for overtime pay. Four of the Indians first 8 games required extra innings with the club going 2-2 in those contests and 4-4 overall, a nice start when compared to their 7th place finish a year ago. The Indians also decided to make sure if they are playing extra innings they make sure the fans get their money's worth. Only one of the games ended in 10 innings, an 8-7 win over Minnesota that was decided by a game winning rbi off the bat of rookie outfielder Mike McCormick. The other 3 games went 13, 15 and 16 innings respectively with two of them coming in the opening series against Louisville......Speaking of the Colonels, Louisville first baseman Buck Leonard enjoyed a 5-hit game in the 13 inning battle with the Indians. All 5 of Leonard's hits were singles as he drove in 3 runs but his Colonels came up on the short end of a 10-9 score. The 30 year old is in his third season with Louisville......Toledo righthander Gene Schott is picking up right where he left off last season. The 24 year old is 2-0 with a 1.80 era and a shutout. Last season he led the Mud Hens to the playoffs with a 27-11 record...…..One of the big questions about Kansas City's ability to repeat as league champion is if Ted Kleinhans could duplicate his amazing success of last season. A year ago the now 39 year old came out of nowhere to win 30 games and capture pitcher of the year honours. So far this season, Kleinhans is 1-1 with a 3.18 era in a pair of starts, both against the St Paul Saints....The kids are making some noise early on offense. A pair of 19 year old's in Minneapolis outfielder Ted Williams (.387,2,7) and Louisville infielder Pee Wee Reese (.361,0,1) are off to a strong start as are 20 year old Lou Boudreau, a college basketball player at Ohio State and an Indianapolis Indians infielder (.333,0,6) and 21 year old old Kansas City catcher Clyde McCullough (.333,0,4). McCullough played a key role in the Blues preseason sweep of the St Louis Cardinals. COLLEGE BASKETBALL TO EXPAND BY TWO MORE SCHOOLS FOR 1938-39 The number of teams in Division One basketball will swell by two next season with word that Sienna and Hardin-Simmons will field hoops programs in 1938-39. The Sienna Indians will play as an independent boosting the number of indy programs to 53 while Hardin-Simmons, known as the Cowboys, will join the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association bringing that conference to 8 schools. In addition to the Cowboys, the BIAA contains Arizona, Arizona State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, Texas Tech and Texas Western. There will be 155 teams competing in NCAA basketball next season.

APRIL 30, 1938 BRUMBAUGH SELECTED FIRST IN NFL DRAFT Penn State running back Boyd Brumbaugh was the first selection of the 1938 NFL draft and was one of three Penn State Nittany Lions selected in the first round. Brumbaugh, who ran for 1,025 yards and 9 touchdowns last season, played his college ball at Ohio State and Florida in real life before spending 9 seasons in the NFL and won a pair of the NFL titles with the Bears. He played QB and halfback in real life but will be a running back in this sim. His Penn State teammates QB Wendell Wear and DT John Mellus also went in the opening round. The mock draft's consensus number one pick, defensive lineman Bruiser Kinard, did not go until round two when Cleveland selected the former Mississippi Rebel. Another notable selection was California corner back Sam Chapman going to Washington in the fourth round. In real life Chapman was an All-American at Cal and a two sport star who would go on to spend 15 seasons in major league baseball with the Philadelphia Athletics and Cleveland Indians. In our sim world it is the second time Chapman was drafted in just over a month. The Athletics selected him 5th overall in last month's MLB draft and he is expected to play both sports professionally in my sim. Code:

May 1, 1938 BRUINS MAKE ANOTHER COACHING CHANGE Despite getting the Boston Bruins to the semi-finals a year after they failed to make the playoffs, Dave Gill's one year tenure as Bruins head coach came to an end this week. Gill was fired and replaced by Lester Patrick, who most recently coached the Montreal Maroons. The much travelled Patrick assumes the reigns of his fourth NHL team, having previously coached Ottawa, the New York Americans and the Maroons. He was fired midway through last season after the Maroons got off to a 9-22-2 start. In his 20 year coaching career the 54 year old is 351-364-39. He has been named Coach of the Year four times and won a pair of Stanley Cup titles. As for Gill, he guided the Bruins to a 20-24-4 record and a second place finish in the American Division before upsetting the Montreal Canadiens in the opening round of the playoffs. Boston would then proceed to be swept by Chicago in the best of three semi-finals. It was the 52 year old Gill's second coaching stint. He previously spent one year with Ottawa in 1932-33, leading the Senators to an abysmal 4-35-9 season. May 2, 1938 GIANTS END APRIL WITH 5 STRAIGHT WINS Led by the pitching of Harry Gumbet (3-0, 1.00) and a strong bullpen, the New York Giants are the hottest team in the National League. The Giants have won 5 straight and end the month of April a half game up on the Philadelphia Phillies for first place in the Senior Circuit. Included in the 5 straight wins was back to back 2 game series sweeps of both the Chicago Cubs and St Louis Cardinals. The two wins over St Louis, by scores of 4-2 and 2-0, temporarily at least slowed down the hottest duo in baseball in St Louis's Johnny Mize (.404,7,19) and Joe Medwick (.360,5,17). In the American League the Cleveland Indians are riding a 6 game winning streak which sees them tied with the New York Yankees for first place. Bob Feller (2-0, 3.24) has had two strong starts for the Tribe, which is hopefully an indication that the elbow troubles that plagued the 19 year old last season are now a thing of the past. Code:

Pittsburgh veteran Paul Waner (.308,0,10) had 9 hits last week bring his career total to 2,481. Waner is one of three players closing in on the 2,500 career hit mark, a total reached by only 28 players so far. Joining Waner in the quest are a pair of Washington Senators in 34 year old Buddy Myer and 36 year old Heinie Manush. Myer is just 28 hits shy of the total after getting 12 through his first 14 games this season. Manush is 38 hits away but is playing very sparingly in Washington, where he is 0-for-9 this season, all appearances as a pinch-hitter. Jimmie Foxx of the Red Sox is rapidly closing in on the 400 homerun mark for his career. The 30 year old, who hit 39 dingers last season, hit 4 in April to bring his total to 381. Only Babe Ruth with 714 and current Yankee Lou Gehrig, who has 461 after hitting 2 so far this season, have hit more homers in the major leagues than Foxx. It was a big week for 21 year old Philadelphia Athletics rookie Sam Chapman. Not only did the rookie go 8-for-21 this week to raise his season average to .277 but he was also selected in the 4th round of the NFL draft. Chapman, who was taken 5th overall by the A's in the spring baseball draft, is a former two sport star at the University of California. AMERICAN ASSOCIATION It is just a couple of weeks into the American Association season but already the wheat seems to be separating from the chaff as the four teams to reach the playoffs in the past two seasons are occupying the top four spots in the league while perennial cellar dwellers Indianapolis and St Paul once again occupy the basement. It is certainly far too early to write off any of these teams as Indianapolis for example, could just as easily be 10-4 as 6-8. The Indians have seen 8 of their 14 games decided by just one run (they are 4-4 in them) and have played 6 extra-inning games already (3-3 in those). St Paul, on the other hand, appears destined for a third straight second division finish as, despite the efforts of second year outfielder Tommy Henrich (.313,4,7) the Saints are dead last in runs scored and not much better in preventing runs. There is some good news for St Paul fans in that Satchel Paige has made 3 solid injury-free starts as the 31 year old tries to stay healthy for an entire season for the first time in his 3 seasons in the loop. Toledo, which lost to Kansas City in the American Series a year ago, has it's pitching staff firing on all cylinders led by Gene Schott (3-1, 2.37) and some strong outings, but not great run support, from ex-Miller Archie McKain (1-2, 1.04). The Blues are getting wins from newcomer Tiny Bonham (2-2, 3.09), as well as returning stars Al Hollingsworth (2-0, 6.43) and Ted Kleinhans (2-2, 3.19), but so far the offense, aside from Cool Papa Bell (.367,0,4) and Billy Herman (.349,1,9), has not peaked yet. One offense that is rolling is that of the Minneapolis Millers. The Millers revamped their team over the off-season, sacrificing the pitching of Archie McKain to do so, and in the early going it has paid off with newcomers Ted Williams (.364,4,13) and Chuck Klein (.441,3,14) being joined by veteran Millers Buzz Arlett (.395,4,13) and Earl Browne (.400,5,10) as those off to a great start. In the opening week of the season the nod went to 39 year old outfielder Buzz Arlett, who hit .522 with 3 homers. This past week it was fellow Millers outfielder Chuck Klein who earned the nod. The 33 year old, who was signed from Milwaukee over the winter, went 12-for-26 (.462) with 2 homers and 8 rbi's last week.
