July 1871
1st August 1871 The Chicago fans have seen a slight improvement in their teams fortunes. They managed to get a 2-3 record in July but still sit bottom of the table. Part of this slight improvement was the hiring of new GM Bill Murphy. This 53 year old has lots of experience and will really help the team. The also hired Pat Brown as manager. The batting managed to score 42 runs in July which is an improvement over previous months. The best came from catcher Deacon White. White had an average of .440 from 25 at bats. He gained 11 hits, 6 runs and 6 RBI's. They lost replacement catcher Paddy Quinn to a fractured knee mid July. His season is over as he will be out for 5 months. The pitching continued to struggle a little as pitcher Al Spalding posted an ERA of 4.31 in the month. This was from 39.2 innings pitched with 67 hits and 19 earned runs against him. The team gave up 44 runs in total. The players gaining recognition with all star call ups in the NL squad were Pitcher Al Spalding, Catcher Deacon White, Second Baseman Willy Goldsmith, Third Baseman Ezra Sutton, Short Stop Ross Barnes, Short Stop John Bass, Left Fielder Tom York, Centre Fielder Bill Kelly and Right Fielder Charlie Mills. We here at the Times don't get why they were all called up after the season they have had but hey who are we to argue with the voters. The players that started for the NL in the 2-8 loss were Ross Barnes at second base and Tom York. July 1871
1st August 1871 Just when the Brown Stockings fans thought everything was rosy in their garden, a massive thunder storm called Baltimore turned up to put a damper on things. The St. louis Brown Stockings saw a poor month by the teams standards record only a 1-4 record in July. This caused them to lose the lead in the AL to Baltimore and they now sit 2 games behind in second place. The batting let things go in July as they struggled to find the form of the previous months. What was worse was that the best of the was pitcher George Zettlein. He posted an average of .462 with 6 hits from 13 at bats and 2 runs and 5 RBI's. This excellent batting from Zettlein really affected his pitching during the month as his ERA slipped to 5.67. He gave up 55 hits and 21 earned runs in 33.1 innings pitched. The team gave up a total of 59 runs which really hurt. The players selected for the AL all star team included Pitcher George Zettlein, Reliever Frank Fleet, catcher Charlie Hodes, Second Baseman Cap Anson and the injured Charlie Sweasy, Centre Fielder George Hall and Right Fielder Ed Pinkham. The starters from this list were Cap Anson and George Zettlein who helped the AL to an 8-2 win. August 1871
1st September 1871 The fans of the Canaries are starting to hope and think that their team have what it takes to gain the AL pennant. The team had another strong month as they went 4-1 in August. This strong month was built behind the outstanding pitching that is coming from Cherokee Fisher. Fisher pitched 46.1 innings in the five games played for an ERA of 1.75. He gave up 49 hits and 9 earned runs. The team gave up a total of 30 runs in all five games. This performance was good enough to again win him the Pitcher of the Month and the Rookie of the Month award for August. The batting did enough during the month to back up the pitching from Fisher. The best was Right Fielder George Bird. Bird played in 4 games, 3 as a starter, and managed 6 hits from 15 at bats to gain an average of .400. He scored 5 runs and made 3 RBI's. He replaced John Hatfield who was injured in the second game of the month. Hatfield's diagnosis is not good and will miss the rest of this season and probably the start of the next season as well. He has torn his Anterior Cruciate Ligament and will be out for 8 months. 1st September 1871 The fans of the Red Stockings can still hope for the chance of the NL pennant as they remain only 2 games behind the NL leaders. They managed to get a 2-2 record in August to keep their hopes alive. This record was built on a very strong batting performance for the month. The best of this strong batting was second baseman Scott Hastings. Hastings blasted a wonderful average of .556 from the 4 games. He did this with 10 hits from 18 at bats. He scored 6 runs and had 5 RBI's. Bobby Mathews got over his blip in July with a better August performance. He posted an ERA of 2.45 from 33 innings pitched. He let 43 hits go and had 9 earned runs against him. A total of 30 runs were given up by the team. He claimed 12 hits from 23 at bats in the 5 games played to get an average of .522. He also scored 8 runs and had 4 RBI's. This performance was good enough to earn him the Batter of the Month award for the NL. Pitcher John McMullin had another solid month as he posted an ERA of 2.49 from 43.1 innings pitched. He gave up 45 hits and 12 earned runs in the 5 games. This performance was wenough to earn him the Pitcher of the Month award and also the Rookie of the Month award for the NL. 1st September 1871 The White Stockings continued to flounder in the season as they posted another 1-3 month. This leaves them bottom 6 games behind the leaders. While this means they can still win the NL pennant it is a highly unlikely probability. Short Stop Ross Barnes again produced the best batting performance for the month. This included 8 hits, 6 runs and 4 RBI's from 19 at bats to give him an average of .421. Pitcher Al Spalding managed to get an ERA of .444 for the month. Talking of Spalding, It seems that this pitching performance may have hurt his pitching stats as he posted only a 4.51 ERA in the 4 games played. He gave up 42 hits and 12 earned runs in 26 innings pitched. The team gave up a total of 42 runs. 1st September 1871 Cincinnati Reds fans are starting to worry that their team will not manage to earn the NL pennant this year. The team went 2-3 for the month of August which saw them joined at the top of the NL table by Brooklyn. It was a poor month for both pitching and batting alike. The batting's best was Catcher Cal McVey who posted an average of .391. He did this from 23 at bats gaining 9 hits, 3 runs and 4 RBI's. First baseman Joe Start also posted a .391 average. Chick Fulmer returned from injury after a 1 game rehab at the AAA Louisville Bats. The pitching had a horrible August as Al Pratt struggled to an ERA of 6.32 for the month. He pitched 37 innings to give up 57 hits and 26 earned runs. The team gave up a total of 37 runs. 1st September 1871 We hope the fans of the Cleveland Forest City's team have other plans for October, as they wont be watching baseball as, their team fell out of the AL pennant race with a 0-5 month in August. The batting was a complete disaster in the month as they could only score 21 runs in the 5 games. The best of the batting was pitcher Rynie Wolters with an average of .450. he had 9 hits from 20 at bats with 4 runs and 1 RBI. This should embarrass the real batters as the next best was first baseman Al Reach with an average of .300. This batting performance detracted from Wolters poor performance on the mound as he had an ERA of 4.80. He pitched 45 innings giving up 66 hits and 24 earned runs. The team gave up a total of 67 runs in the month.
