Who cares about wins? 4 era lifetime? That's gross. Absolutely not, no way he deserves the HoF. Besides he had 730 starts. Gross.

Curious: How often was he the team leader in wins, ERA, WHIP, etc?

About half the time, from what I could tell.
And the final career stats for Mr. Tanana, who retired after the 1994 season. He finished with a winning record, thanks to being the 4th starter for the Buffalo Bisons, who won the NL East with 115 wins, but lost in the NLCS in six games. ![]() He had one NLCS start...it did not go well. ![]() So, pretty much the ultimate "borderline HOF" career, despite 300 wins. Mostly because of the high earnie, and the 300+ losses. |

Some of you seem to be arguing about how good a pitcher he was. That wasn't the question.
The question, does he deserve to be in the Hall of Fame. The answer is yes. 300 Wins is an impressive achievement. It deserves recognition. Now you might counter with - he only got 300 wins by pitching so long - but pitching that long is part of the achievement! Would I rank him high on the list of greatest pitchers ever? Not at all. Would I put him in the Hall of Fame? No question about it. (Of course, based on an early post in this thread, if Roger Clemens doesn't belong in the Hall, then virtually nobody does...)

I don't see 300 wins as being automatic. If you look at Don Sutton, his career statistics are nearly identical to Steve Carlton's and he received under 60% of the vote his first 2 years on the real ballot. Gaylord Perry didn't make it until the third ballot (with 77%). I don't think someone who was 309-306 would stand a chance in real life unless his peripherals were outstanding. Niekro is far more qualified than this guy, and it took him 5 ballots. Early win won 300 and barely got in on his 4th try (76%).
The big question you have to ask is this: is this guy the best candidate available for the hall? Is he even one of the top 5 candidates?
