Wednesday May 31 at New York Mutuals (11-13 tied for 5th place in the Liberty League)
Abe Lowe is going to bat 6th in this game. Abe Lowe, Troy (27 R 8-10 2.02) vs. Harry Mays, N. Y. (35 L 9-8 2.44) Won: 2 to 1 Abe Lowe wen 0 for 4 in the Great Experiment and even struck out. But he pitched a whale of a game, allowing New York only 6 hits, 3 of them to lf Chicken Evarts. Tomorrow, cf Ed Tomlinson is scheduled to be ready to play, so I should have known it was about time for another outfielder to bite the dust. Len Cardillo, who has been hitting so well as Dick Carver's replacement in left, pulled a hamstring and is expected to miss 3 weeks. Other doin's: Washington (7) at Philadelphia (3): Pete Tyson (7-11) over Paul Skinner (12-6). Skinner just did not have his stuff today; Washington rapped out 16 hits in the game, 4 of them by 26 year old lf William Riser playing in his first game. Detroit (1) at Boston (2): Charlie Barry (6-1) over Charlie Charles (4-3). 1b Sam Simpson had 3 hits, including a double for Boston. St. Louis (2) at Baltimore (9): Miller Bullock (6-5) over Dick Dixson (10-8). Bullock held St. Louis to 5 hits. He has now won 3 starts in a row, including 2 straight 5-hitters. 2b Joe Ricketts and 3b Dave Thompson each had 3 hits for the Canaries. Ricketts knocked in 2 and Thompson scored twice. Down in Rochester, ss Enoch Polm is 3 for 31. He went 18 for 48 (.375) in Spring Training before he got hurt. The injury has apparently made him a worthless player. Hope he comes around again sometime.... |

Abe Lowe here, Abe Lowe there. Monk Cunningham is without the slightest doubt the best pitcher in the league. I blame his bag full of losses entirely on the offense his team has.
Monk! Monk! Monk! Every batter starts to pray once they face him! Enough poor jokes. Gonna be following, but you probably knew that before. ![]()

Saturday June 3 vs. Boston Red Caps (13-12 tied for 3rd place in the Liberty League)
We activated Ed Tomlinson from the DL and put Len Cardillo on it. Joe Phelps, Bost. (32 L 0-0 1.08 1st start in Liberty League) vs. Abe Lowe, Troy (27 R 9-10 1.97) Won: 5 to 4 Abe Lowe pitched the first 7 innings incredibly. He only allowed 2 hits and at one point sat down 18 in a row! In the 8th he blew up and allowed 4 hits and 4 runs, but came back to sit them down in order in the 9th. Joe Phelps was pretty good in his first start for Boston, only allowing Troy 7 hits. Other doin's: Baltimore (6) at Philadelphia (14): Paul Skinner (13-6) over Martin Bullock (6-6). ss Robert Dykeman had 4 hits, including a double and knocked in 4 and scored 3 times for Philly. New York (13) at Washington (1): Harry Mays (10-9) over Pete Tyson (7-12). Mays had 2 hits and knocked in 2 and scored twice. 3b Reddy Fasig had 3 hits and a double for the Mutuals. Detroit (10) at St. Louis (3): Charlie Charles (5-3) over Dick Dixson (10-9). Charles held St. Louis to 6 hits and had 4 (!!) of his own, knocking in 3 runs. Manager/rf Jack Trammel was back for this game and went 1 for 6. So was 3b Bub Nelson, who was 3 for 5. The Wolverines top 3 in the lineup went 2 for 17; everyone else was 15 for 30. |

Monday June 5 vs. Washington Olympics (8-18 8th place in the Liberty League)
Paul O'Sullivan, Wash. (26 R 0-0 3.38 1st start in Liberty League) vs. Abe Lowe, Troy (27 R 10-10 1.92) Lost: 5 to 4 Arrrrrrrgh! rf Porter Thorpe welcomed O'Sullivan to Troy be leading off the bottom of the first with a blast over 400 feet, but the Irishman seemed unfazed and proceeded to pitch a good game, getting the outs whenever he really needed them. Coming into this game rf Pink Edwards was 6 for 41 (.146), but went 3 for 5 knocking in 4 of Washington's 5 runs. Other doin's: Baltimore (5) at New York (6): Harry Mays (11-9) over Steve Sedam (5-10). 1b Tony Chamberlin had 3 hits in a losing cause. St. Louis (5) at Boston (6): Joe Phelps (1-1) over Obadiah McDevitt (0-1) in his first start. cf Ezra Martin had 3 hits and a triple and scored twice for the Red Caps. Philadelphia (7) at Detroit (8): John Walker (4-1) over Dave Watford (5-3). Everybody in the lineup for both teams had a hit except Philly's lf Dave Bigelow, who was 0 for 5, committing 3 errors. p John Walker for Detroit is the tallest player in the Liberty League at 6' 2". |

Wednesday June 7 at Baltimore Canaries (11-16 7th place in the Liberty League)
Dan Melvin, Troy (27 R 3-3 2.50) vs. Miller Bullock, Balt. (27 L 6-6 2.18) Won: 7 to 4 c Deacon Stone had 3 hits and 3 RBIs and ss Marty Rodgers had 2 doubles and a triple. He scored twice and knocked in 3. Our second baseman, Cub Tolliver, can also play the outfield a little so I guess he was fair game for the injury fairy. He tore a muscle making a throw and will be out until September. After the game we put him on the DL and sent for Dan Owens to come back from Rochester. In 9 games down there he hit .341 with 7 extra base hits, so maybe he's ready to play now. Other doin's: St. Louis (18) at Philadelphia (5): Dick Dixon (11-9) over Paul Skinner (13-7). St. Louis mauled Paul Skinner for 15 runs in less than 4 innings. Philly Manager Dave Watford took the box himself and went the rest of the way. The Brown Stockings ended up with 26 hits. They had 5 (!!) players with 4 hits. cf Buck Freeman was one of them and he knocked 4 runs and scored 4 times. Boston (9) at Washington (2): Monk Cunningham (8-11) in his 1st start back from injury over Paul Tyson (7-13). cf Ezra Martin had 4 hits and a double and scoring twice and knocking in a pair for the Red Caps. Detroit (4) at New York (5): John Kyle (3-5) over John Walker (4-2). lf Warren Ware had 2 hits including a solo home run for New York. |

Yet another outfielder bit the dust: Victor Wilcox Other doin's: Philadelphia (3) at Boston (4): Monk Cunningham (9-11) over Paul Skinner (13-8). lf Harry Green had 3 hits including a double for Boston, the hottest team in the league right now. Monday June 12 vs. St. Louis Brown Stockings (16-13 tied for 2nd place in the Liberty League)
Obadiah McDevitt, St. L. (39 R 0-1 1.93) vs. Abe Low, Troy (27 R 11-11 1.93) Lost: 2 to 1 The Brown Stockings are the second worst fielding team in the Liberty League, averaging almost 7 errors a game. In their last game against New York they made 14 errors and lost 19 to 2. Against us, they only made 3. 2b/ss Bob Rene had made 40 errors all by himself in 29 games. He had none against us. And we could manage only 7 hits off Ol' Obadiah. 4 of those were by 2b Dan Owens who also hit a double and a home run. Abe Lowe held St. Louis to only 7 hits. Cunningham also scored twice on 2 hits and knocked in 3 runs. Washington (3) at Detroit (6): John Walker (5-3) over Paul O'Sullivan (1-1). Walker held the Olympics to 5 hits. Both 3b Bub Nelson and lf Dan Mixon had 3 hits. |

Dan Melvin, Troy (27 R 4-3 2.29) vs. Paul Skinner, Phil. (25 L 13-8 2.65) Won: 11 to 10 Philly scored 3 times in the bottom of the 9th to threaten, but Troy hung on. Easch team had 17 hits, but the difference in the game was the 9 erros made by the Centennials compared to the 5 by the Haymakers. cf Jim Kruppa had 4 hitas and 2 triples for Philly. c Deacon Stone had a double and 4 hits for Troy. He scored twice and knocked in a pair. rf Porter Thorpe scored 3 times. Other doin's: New York (3) at Boston (10): Monk Cunningham (11-11) over John Kyle (3-6). Cunningham held the Mutuals to 4 hits. St. Louis' error totals in last 3 games: 14, 3 (in win over us), 13. We did not get our first hit until the 6th inning, by which time we were down 4 to 1. 1b Willard DeVaux grounded into a double play to erase the runner. We ended up with the massive total of 4 hits. Then we did not score again until the 9th inning when an Ed Tomlinson triple broke the 3-3 tie. Other doin's: Baltimore (4) at Boston (10): Monk Cunningham (14-14) over Miller Bullock (9-10). Cunningham held Baltimore to 5 hits. Detroit (5) at Washington (4) in 12 innings: John Walker (7-6) over Paul O'Sullivan (1-4) in relief of Pete Tyson. Excellent start, I will be a loyal rooter for the lads from Troy.
I have been trying to start a very similar dynasty for a while but never get the settings quite where I want them (pre 1900 leagues are unique animals for sure), and now I've gotten sidetracked by my semi-pro in-state league that finally is where I want it to be. The yelling seemed to work, I usually just devolve to loudly voicing my teams complete lack of usefulness, which doesn't seem to help.... |

Saturday July 1 vs. Philadelphia Centennials (22-15 1st place in the Liberty League)
Paul Skinner, Phil. (25 L 16-10 2.51) vs. Abe Lowe, Troy (27 R 13-14 1.94) Lost: 5 to 2 This is past ridiculous with our outfielders getting hurt. Len Cardillo bruised his forearm and had to come out of the game today. He should be okay in a day or two though. We had all of 6 hits today. Paul Skinner twice knocked in a run with two outs for Philly. Okay, ss Enoch Polm has raised his Rochester average up to .337 and cf Frank Scarborough has lifted his to .300. 3b Monk Kelly has been hitting all along and is at .308 with 32 RBIs. We're bringing up all 3 and sending ss Marty Rodgers (who knocked in our only 2 runs today), cf Ed Tomlinson (13 for his last 68 - .191) and 3b Joe Lees (leads the team in XBH, but is 8 for his last 46 - .174) to Rochester. Other doin's: Boston (7) at New York (6): Monk Cunningham (15-14) over Harry Mays (16-11). Cunningham went 4 for 4 at the plate with 2 RBIs. Baltimore (2) at Detroit (3): John Walker (8-6) over Martin Bullock (9-11). Detroit tied the game with 2 runs in the 8th and then won it in the 9th when Manager/rf Jack Trammel tripled with one out and scored when Baltimore ss Fred Clapp threw Henry Theroux's grounder away. Washington (8) at St. Louis (4) in 10 innings: Pete Tyson (13-13) over John Bailey (0-3). Bailey held Washington to 5 hits through 9 innings but walked the first two hitters in the 10th and some errors and a couple of singles did him in. lf Joe Rains was 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs for St. Louis. |
