Offseason
Off-season:
I have no free agents on the roster to worry about resigning, that was a welcome surprise. I cut MR Alan Embree. I run into problems this offseason as I have a cheap owner and it really limited my ability to go after free agents. Trade: I trade Jemery Burnitz and Dennis Cook to HOU for SP Shane Reynolds (15-13, 3.81). Reynolds strengthens my rotation. I hate to give Burnitz up as he was my 5th OF and he had the talent to start for just about every other team in the league. Free Agent Signings: Nothing Earth shattering here, just a couple bench players... I sign Turner Ward to a small 1 year contract. Leo Gomez is signed to a 1 year contact, he can play all around the IF. DRAFT: Pretty weak draft class. Here's who I pick: SS Orlando Cabrera SP Ken Cloude MR Matt Whisenant RF Marc Sagmoen MR Mike Bouvee MR Roberto Duran Last edited by johneh; 05-27-2013 at 09:17 AM. |

Here's how we start out 1997:
C: Sandy Alomar & Jessie Levis - Alomar is an above average catcher at the plate & behind it. Levis hit a surprising .340 least year & provides solid defense. 1st: Jim Thome moves over from 3rd to 1st this year. For whatever reason his ratings at 3rd drop and he picks up a rating at first. Herbert Perry is an above average back up. 2nd: Carlos Baerga - Count on him to hit 300. SS: Omar Vizquel - came on strong at the plate ending the year hitting over 280 and of course the best glove at SS in the league. 3rd: Leo Gomez - A last second addition when I saw Thome was no longer at 3rd baseman! This could become a problem area offensively. I actually tried to get Brian Giles some time at 3rd base to see if he could pick up a rating but he didn't, it was a LONG shot considering Giles is left handed ![]() OF: Belle, Lofton, Ramirez - Super strong OF DH: Brian Giles - was the AL rookie of the year last season. He can also play all 3 outfield positions. Bench - Turner Ward is my 5th OF (when you add Giles to the OF mix), Bill Ripken and Herbert Perry provide depth in the IF. Starting Pitching: Shane Reynolds, Mark Clark, Charles Nagy, Chad Ogea, David Wells - If these guys pitch like they should then my starting pitching is rock solid. However last year I saw Nagy & Wells struggle. Clark was solid until late in the year and Wells was just so-so after I picked him up. Bullpen: Julian Tavarez, Gregg Olson, Eric Plunk, Albie Lopez, Stan Belinda, Paul Assenmacher, Jose Mesa. Plunk, Lopez and Olson are question marks, the rest of the bullpen should be strong. I expect another run at the World Series this year and so does the team owner. |

April 1997
Cleveland starts the year going 13 - 13, which is enough for them to end the month in first place...
In the third game of the season Manny Ramirez tears his rotator cuff and will miss at least 3 months. Terry Jones is called up to help out during Manny's injury. With Manny going down Brian Giles moves from being the everyday DH to the OF, Thome moves to DH and Herbert Perry takes over at 1st. HOT.... Thome wins an AL player of the week award hitting 600 with 5 HRs for the week. For the month Thome hits 351 with 10 HR, 24 RBI. He's off to a great start. Shayne Reynolds is 3-3 with 2.62 ERA and right now looks like a great pick up. David Wells after a rocky year starts this one out strong going 3-1 with a 2.86 ERA. Not Hot... Vizquel is hitting .198 and his defense rating has dropped significantly. Leo Gomez has struggles (as I feared) hitting just .120, I may have to address 3rd base soon. Paul Assenmacher and Stan Belinda both have ERA's above 9. Last year there were solid set up men in the bullpen and I need them to come through again this year! |

May 1997
Another so-so month as Cleveland goes 15-14. Despite playing 500 ball they sit just 1.5 games out of first after 2 months. We are really under performing.
Who's Hot: Albert Belle hits 322 with 11 HR during May Shane Reynolds goes 3-0 with a 3.38 ERA for May David Wells goes 3-2 with a 4.05 ERA for May. More importantly he had 3 critical starts where he was able to go 8 innings to help an exhausted bullpen rest. Who's Not: Mark Clark 1-5 with a 7.11 ERA for May Assenmacher, Belinda & Olsen - all have ERA's of 6.75 or higher for the season and my bullpen has become a liability. Omar is hitting 226 for the year & is pouting about not hitting in the top of the batting order. News/Injury/Transactions: Jim Thome is suspended for 4 games mi-month due to a fight. Kenny Lofton has a 21 game hitting streak. I move Leo Gomez down to AAA and sign free agent Charlie Hayes to replace Gomez as the starting 3rd baseman. I lose Stan Belina at the end of the month with an injury. He will be out 2 - 3 months. |

June 1997
At the end of June Cleveland is 1.5 games behind KC.
June was a good month with the Indians going 18-9 PITCHING: The starting pitching was responsible for the good month. Shane Reynolds and David Wells were outstanding all month long. Mark Clark & Charles Nagy also were much improved. The bullpen however is a bit of a mess with Julian Tavarez the only one in the bull pen doing a good job. I may have to address the bullpen soon. Shane Reynods wins the AL pitcher of the month award for June. YTD stitching: OFFENSE: Charlie Hayes has done no better than Leo Gomez leaving 3rd base in shambles offensively. My bench players have all been excellent offensively this year, out hitting the starters at their position. Terry Jones, called up when Ramirez was hurt is forcing me to find playing time for him. He's been in a bit of a slump causing his average to finally drop below 500! Excellent defensive CF, speed, high average. The down side is he can really only play CF and not the other OF positions. July 1997
A very good month for Cleveland as they go 18-8 and end the month atop the Central. The starting pitching is really coming around and it showed in July. Also plenty of roster activity this month too....
Standings: AL All Stars for Cleveland - Thome, Belle and Shane Reynolds. Thome also picks up a player of the week award during July. Roster Changes: * At the All Star break I call up relievers Joe Roa and Joe Borowski from AAA to shore up the bullpen sending down Gregg Olson & Zane Smith. * A few days later I make a trade sending Chad Ogea to Colorado for 3B Travis Fryman and miner league MR Travis Miller. This trade instantly solves my 3b base dilemma. *As a result of the tradefor Fryman, Charlie Hayes is send down to AAA and Zane Smith is recalled. Smith won't be in the bullpen but rather he will return to the rotation. I keep a close eye on him and if he doesn't cut it he will get a quick trip back down and I will call up a young arm to take his place. In 4 starts during July Smith turns in two gems, one good game and one clunker solidifying his spot in the rotation for now. *At the end of July Gregg Olson is trade to Cincinnati for minor league IF Josh Booty. More of a salary dump for Cleveland than anything else. * Leo Gomez is traded to KC for MR Dilson Torres. Basically a desperation move by both teams trying to shore up problem area. Torres will be plugged into the bullpen which is still struggling. * Jeff Reboulett is traded to Toronto for CL Mike Timlin. This is a huge trade for Cleveland and one I kind of feel guilty doing (but hey the computer offered it). This is a huge boost for the struggling bullpen! * Joe Roa is sent back to AAA. |

August 1997
Cleveland goes 16-12 in August and remains in first place.
Alomar wins a Player of the Week Award... Belle gets suspended... Roster Changes.. Zane Smith proves that his few good starts were a fluke. So mid-month Jeff D'Amico is called up to replace him. Smith refuses the demotion and with the roster expansion coming up soon I move Smith to the bullpen and demote Albie Lopez to AAA. Manny Ramirez returns from his long injury stint. With Terry Jones still hitting over 300 he holds on to his roster spot and Turner Ward is demoted. Other August News... On Offense.. Almoar and Vizquel both hit over 300 for the month (my usual 8 & 9 hitters). The only starter to really struggle for the month was Thome who hit 229. Pitching.. David Wells struggles going 2-2 with 5.90 ERA and Zane Smith goes 0-1 with 11.57 ERA. The rest of the staff did a good job. Charlie Hayes & Albie Lopez both down in AAA are injured and will not get a Sept. call up. Sept. Call ups: With the roster expansion I bring up... Turner Ward, Joe Roa, Joe Browoski, Bill Pulsipher (MR) and Dan Ganville (OF). |

Playoffs Round 1
For the 3rd straight year Cleveland makes the playoffs. However the previous two years we were booted out in the first round. Time to get farther in the playoffs...
The Wildcard Toronto Blue Jays (89-73) are first up for the Tribe (99-63) GAME 1 @ CLE : David Cone (18-12, 3.38) vs. Shane Reynolds (22-6, 2.22) Cleveland scores 7 in the 3rd and never looks back winning 12-2. Reynolds goes 6.2 innings giving up 2 runs. Sandy Alomar hits 2 homers runs and Albert Belle adds another as Cleveland cruises to an easy victory. GAME 2 @ CLE: Alex Fernandez (13-15, 4.72) vs David Wells (15-9, 4.13) A pitchers duel with Toronto pulling out a 2-1 victory to tie the series. GAME 3 @ TOR: Mark Clark (17-12, 4.03) vs. Chris Holt (4-3, 4.50) Cleveland strikes for 4 in the 3rd and cruises the rest of the way to an 8-1 win. CLE leads 2 games to 1. GAME 4 @ TOR: David Cone (18-12, 3.38) vs. Charles Nagy (18-7, 4.22) I take a bit of a gamble and start Nagy even though Reynolds is ready to go, my plan is to hopefully save him for the start of the next series (if I win this game). The first inning starts out rough for Nagy as he gives up 3 runs. Cleveland comes back in the 6ths as Vizquel leads off with a walk and goes to 2ndon a bad pick off throw. Lofton singles to score Omar. Then with 2 out Thome hits a 2 run homer to tie the game at 3. This game goes to extra innings tied at 3. In the 11th Thome hits a solo HR. Mike Timlin comes in to save the game and gives up a leadoff HR to Alex Gonzales so the game continues. In the 15th inning Lofton leads off with a HR to give Cleveland a 5-4 lead. Jose Mesa comes in to close out the game (hold your breath Tribe fans!!) and it’s 3 up and 3 down for TOR. Cleveland Wins the series 3 games to 1! Last edited by johneh; 07-06-2013 at 10:43 AM. |

AL Division Champtionship round 1997
Finally Cleveland makes it into the second round of the playoffs. The Indians face the Red Sox (95-67)
Game 1: Roger Clemens (24-4, 2.20) vs. Shane Reynolds (22-6, 2.22) It’s safe to assume this game features the AL Cy Young Award winner this season versus the runner up to the award. In the 3rd inning Cleveland scores 2 as Vizquel and Lofton come home on singles by Giles and Thome. Cleveland goes on to win 4-1 behind 7 strong innings by Reynolds and 2 perfect bullpen inning from Julian Tavarez and Mike Timlin. Game 2: Tim Wakefield (13-8, 4.52) vs. David Wells (15-9, 4.13) Cleveland scores 2 in the first, 3 in the 5th and adds another run in the 8th. Wells pitches 8 shutout innings and Cleveland rolls to a 6-0 victory and taks a 2 games to 0 lead in the series. Game 3: Mark Clark (17-12, 4.03) vs. Aaron Sele (9-16, 5.81) Boson scores 2 in the first on a Mo Vaughn HR. In the 2nd Cleveland scores one on a Vizuel single that brings home Baerga. In the bottom of the 2nd John Valentine hits a solo HR to put Boston back up by 2. Troy O’Leary adds a solo shot in the 4th to put Boston up 4-1. Cleveland’s offense is shut down until the 8th inning when they bring one home thanks to a double by Sandy Alomar. Going into the 9th Cleveland still trails 4-2. Kenny Lofton leads off the 9th and reaches on an error. Giles & Belle both strike out leaving Cleveland down to it’s final out. Thome is able to draw a walk putting runners on 1st & 2nd. Manny Ramirez singles to bring home Lofton and cut the Boston lead to 1. Carlos Baerga flies out to end the game and Cleveland falls 4-3. CLE leads the series 2-1. Game 4: Shane Reynolds (22-6, 2.22) vs Roger Clemens (24-4, 2.20) Another big pitching matchup! In the 2nd inning using a double and walk and a bunch of singles Cleveland scores 4. In the 5th inning Cleveland adds 3 more runs and pulls away to a 8-3 victory. Reynolds goes 7.1 strong innings while Clemens leaves the game in the 5th. CLE leads the series 3-1. Game 5: David Wells (15-9, 4.13) vs Tim Wakefield (13-8, 4.52) Cleveland scores 2 in the 1st to jump out to an early lead. However, Wakefield shuts down Cleveland the rest of the way and Boston goes on to a 3-2 victory. Series 3-2. Game 6: Shane Reynolds (22-6, 2.22) vs Aaron Sele (9-16, 5.81) I decide to start Reynolds on 3 days rest. Sele pitches well going 7 innings and giving up just 1 run & 3 hits. Reynolds, never to be out pitched, goes 7 innings giving up 0 runs and 1 hit. In the 6th inning Alomar drive Thome home with a single for the game's only score as Cleveland wins 1-0 and takes the series 4-2. |

World Series 1997
Game 1: John Smoltz (18-5, 2.77) vs Mark Clark (17-12, 4.03)
Manny hits a solo shot in the 2nd to put Cleveland up 1-0. In the 3rd Almar ends up at 2nd after a 2 base error, goes to 3rd on a Vizquel ground out and then scores on a Lofton fly out to put Cleveland up 2-0. In the 4th a triple by Dave Hollins brings home 2 for Atlanta. The next inning Atlanta scores 2 more to tie up the game. Bottom of the 6th Cleveland’s offense comes alive and scores 4 on 6 hits. The bullpen holds down the fort and Cleveland wins game 1 8 to 4. Game 2: Gary Maddux (16-13, 3.09) vs David Wells (15-9, 4.13) After 7 innings Cleveland is up 5 to 1 and they turn to the bullpen to close it out. The 8th however becomes a nightmare... a hit batter, a walk, 4 singles and a home run later Atlanta leads the game 6-5 and they go one to win. Series tied 1-1. Game 3: Shane Reynolds (22-6, 2.22) vs. Tom Glavine (15-13, 4.08) Glavine goes 9 innings giving up 3 runs. However, Reynolds is even better going 7 innings giving up just 1 run. Mesa & Timlin hold on to close the game out and Cleveland wins 3-1. CLE leads the series 2-1. Game 4: Charles Nagy (18-7, 4.22) vs. John Smoltz (18-5, 2.77) Going into the 8th inning Cleveland leads the game 3-2 and they decide that’s too close for comfort so they add 4 in the inning behind a two run Alomar HR and run scoring singles from Vizquel and Belle. CLE leads 3-1, Game 5: Mark Clark (17-12, 4.03) vs. Gary Maddux (16-13, 3.09) 2nd inning Cleveland scores 3 on a Travis Fryman Home Run! (He’s been quiet all post season). In the 4th Chipper jones smacks a solo shot and in the 6th Fred McGriff also smacks a solo shot to pull Atlanta to within 1. In the 8th Baerga singles to bring home Vizquel and in the 9ths Cleveland adds 1 more on a single by Vizquel. Bottom of the 9th Mike Timlin is called in to close out the game. Dave Hollins and Mike Kelley both strike out and Joe Randa hits an easy ground out and Cleveland wins 5-2. Cleveland wins the World Series 4 games to 1. Cleveland are The World Series Champs!! |

Congrats! Getting a little help in the rotation goes a long way in the postseason.
