10/23/1903 - Our first award
It wasn't a major award, but the first Highlander/Yankee was honored following the season.
Congratulations to Jimmy Williams, who won a Gold Glove at second base. |

12/20/1903 - Transaction News
I knew that this moment was coming sometime over the offseason, but today the day finally arrived. Jesse Tannehill was traded to the Boston Americans for Tom Hughes.
I've talked a lot about Jesse Tannehill so far, but I think for good reason. I thought he was my best pitcher last year, or at least the one I felt most comfortable starting a game with. 1903 - 24-11, 2 SV, 2.69 ERA, 320.2 IP, 131 K IRL - 15-15, 0 SV, 3.27 ERA, 239.2 IP, 106 K Long Tom Hughes will be joining the rotation next year, at least for part of the year. Last year he was 15-15 with a 3.23 ERA. |

2/21/1904 - Transaction News
We're now up to 21 players as we continue to fill out our roster. It's definitely a weird experience to not have any control over the transactions. Today the Highlanders purchased the contract of 40 year old catcher Deacon McGuire.
McGuire hit .228 for the Tigers last year (112-491) with 2 home runs, 50 RBI, 50 runs, and 10 stolen bases. |

3/6/1904 - Transaction News
The Highlanders completed a big trade today, sending Harry Howell to the St. Louis Browns in exchange for starting pitcher Jack Powell.
Last year Powell was pretty good in St. Louis going 25-8 with a 1.78 ERA in 312.2 innings while striking out 145 batters. Harry Howell ends his Yankee career after just one year. On the mound he was 3-9 with 1 save and a 4.38 ERA in 78 innings. He also played 9 games at second base for us as well, hitting .155 (9-58) with 5 RBI and 4 runs scored. While he wasn't great with the bat he was a big improvement defensively only making 1 error in those 9 games. IRL Howell was 9-6 with a 3.53 ERA in 155.2 innings. |

4/14/1904 - Opening Day
The 1904 season was the first verified time that the Yankees nickname was used as an alternate to the Highlanders, and the 1904 season was the first where the Highlanders/Yankees were in the pennant race the entire season.
The Highlanders led by 2 games as late as September 20, and they would lose on the last day of the season on a wild pitch by Jack Chesbro after a season in which he went 41-12 with a 1.82 ERA. So the intent is to play out all the games of the 1904 season, and lead the Yankees to our first World Series victory. We'll see how that goes. Opening Day started well though, in a battle against the present day Red Sox. Jack Chesbro vs. Cy Young. In an encouraging sign Jack Chesbro pitched a 5 hit complete game shutout, and we scored 5 runs to win. John Ganzel drove in a pair of runs, while Willie Keeler, Kid Elberfeld, and Jimmy Williams each drove in a run as well. New addition John Anderson had an uneventful debut, going 0-4. |

Record: 2-1, .667, 1/2 GB Place: tied 2nd place, 1/2 game behind Detroit Power Ranking: 6th (120.0) Last week:2-1 Vs. Boston (2-1) 5-0 W: Jack Chesbro (1-0) 6-1 W: Jack Powell (1-0) 10-7 L: Jack Powell (1-1), HR: John Ganzel (1), Tom Hughes (1) The Highlanders started off the season pretty well against the defending American League Champions. We got strong starting pitching by Jack Chesbro and Jack Powell to start the season. Game 3 was a little bit trickier, as Tom Hughes pitched well until the seventh inning where he gave up 4 runs, but we scored 2 runs in the bottom of the eighth to win. I'm not sure what the "real" rotation is this year, and not thinking about the off day I put in Jack Powell for the ninth. Two errors to start the inning didn't help, but Powell didn't have his best stuff today in relief, and he allowed 3 runs to score and we went on to our first loss of the year. We were able to salvage a split though, although Jack Chesbro needed to come in during the ninth to quiet a rally. @ Philadelphia (4-0) 7-3 W: Barney Wolfe (1-0) 13-3 W: Jack Chesbro (4-1) 6-5 W: Jack Chesbro (5-1), SV: Jack Powell (1) 2-1 W(11 innings): Tom Hughes (2-1) After losing three of four against the Athletics last week we were able to exact some revenge. While the first two games of the series were comfortable wins, the last two were nail biters. Jack Chesbro actually started the final three games of the series. A starter wasn't assigned to the middle of the three games, so I decided to give him the start, not realizing he pitched the day before, and was scheduled to pitch the next day. He still pitched well in all three games though. Next week: 4 vs. Washington 2 @ Philadelphia Who's Hot? Current Record
Record: 14-5, .737, - GB Place: 1st place, 1 game lead over Detroit Power Ranking: 1st (150.0) Vs. Washington (4-0) 12-5 W: Tom Hughes (3-1) We trailed 4-1 heading into the sixth inning, but a 10 run 6th inning led us to the big victory, and set the tone for the series. John Anderson was 3-4 for the night with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored. Willie Keeler, Kid Elberfeld, and John Ganzel each chipped in with a pair of hits. 2-1 W: Jack Powell (2-3) From blowout to nail biter as the Highlanders win our seventh straight game. Jack Powell gave up his only run in the top of the first, and the Senators held a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth. Dave Fultz and Willie Keeler singled home runs in the bottom of the ninth as we walked off winners. 4-3 W: Jack Chesbro (6-1) Another day another walk off single by Willie Keeler in the bottom of the ninth. Jack Chesbro pitched well tonight, but surrendered a 3-1 lead by giving up runs in the seventh and eighth innings. We were able to break the tie score in the ninth though as he picked up his 6th win of the year. 9-5 W: Barney Wolfe (2-0) Barney Wolfe got the start tonight, which always causes me a little angst. He's definitely not the same caliber pitcher as Chesbro, Jack Powell, or even Tom Hughes. He was opposed by Davey Dunkle, who entered the game with a 5.40 ERA, but for the first five innings Dunkle pitched like Cy Young. Trailing 3-0 we were able to scrape out a run in the bottom of the sixth, but it was the seventh inning when we broke things open. Monte Beville stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a grand slam for his first home run of the season and the Highlanders extended our winning streak to nine games. Next series: 4 @ Boston (12-7) |

5/8/1904 - Win streak up to 11
The Highlanders are continuing to roll, increasing our winning streak to 11 games, although the separation between us and the second place Tigers remains at just 2 games. The Highlanders also made a transaction during the off day between the four game set with Boston.
5/6/1904 Highlanders 3 Americans 2 W: Tom Hughes (4-1) - 9 IP, 7 K, 7 H Jimmy Williams, John Anderson, and Dave Fultz each drove in a run during today's 3-2 win as all of the scoring came early before both pitchers settled down and Hughes picked up his fourth win. 5/7/1904 Highlanders 7 Americans 4 W: Jack Chesbro (7-1) It's real fun to play when you are hot and when you are playing well you start to expect that you'll find a way to win. Jack Chesbro pitched well tonight, until the ninth inning. But at that point we had already built up a 7-2 lead. John Ganzel and Jimmy Williams each drove in a pair of runs, while John Anderson picked up 3 hits in the game. The only starter who failed to get a hit was Jack Chesbro, who dropped his average to .143 with a 0-4 night. Last year Chesbro hit .226, which wasn't good, but much more acceptable. Highlanders acquire Thoney The Highlanders added some outfield depth today when we purchased right fielder John Thoney from Washington. Thoney was hitting .324 this year in just 37 at-bats. While he won't be a starter he should get some playing time as our fourth outfielder. |

5/10/1904 - Win streak ends at 12
Our winning streak finally ended at 12 games. The Highlanders still hold a two game lead over Detroit in the American League.
5/9/1904 Highlanders 6 Americans 4 W: Jack Chesbro (8-1) Two costly errors led to four unearned runs by Boston, but the Highlanders would battle back, eventually tieing the score in the eighth and going ahead with a two run ninth inning. Both Willie Keeler and John Ganzel were 3-5 for the night, with Ganzel driving in 3 runs. 5/10/1904 Americans 6 Highlanders 4 W: Jack Powell (2-4) All good things eventually come to an end, and tonight our 12 game winning streak was over. The frustrating thing isn't so much losing, but blowing a four run lead and failing to capitalize on opportunities. This was a game we could have won, but we found a way to lose with 4 errors and leaving 12 men on base. With his fourth loss of the year Jack Powell now has 2/3 of our 6 losses. |

5/16/1904 - Highlanders fall out of first
The Highlanders returned back home for a four game set with Cleveland and lost three of four games, knocking us into second place a game behind Detroit. From the first pitch of the series we didn't lead a single inning until a two run single the scored the tieing and winning runs in the bottom of the ninth in the final game.
5/11/1904 Naps 2 Highlanders 0 L: Tom Hughes (4-2) We went from hot hitting to very cold hitting as the Highlanders were 3 hit by Bill Bernhard who picked up his 7th win of the season. It was a very ugly game. 5/12/1904 Naps 3 Highlanders 2 L: Jack Chesbro (8-2) After a first inning single we didn't get another hit until the seventh inning. We scored 2 runs late to make it close, but it didn't feel like we ever stood a chance. 5/13/1904 Naps 4 Highlanders 1 L: Jack Powell (2-5) While his record drops to 2-5, Jack Powell doesn't have much luck this year. He lasted just 2 1/3 innings while giving up 1 run before a long rain delay ended the night. That one run was enough to give him the loss though as our bats continued to be silent. 5/14/1904 Highlanders 4 Naps 3 W: Jack Chesbro (9-2) It looked like we were headed to a four game sweep down 3-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth, but John Anderson singled home a pair of runs with two outs on a full count as we ended our losing streak. Current Record Record: 18-9, .667, 1 GB Place: 2nd place, 1 game behind Detroit Power Ranking: 2nd (123.0) Next series: 4 vs. Detroit (19-8) |
