April 10th, 1979

Wow, did this game turn ugly. Pete Vuckovich got off to another poor start but just when it seemed that the bullpen were shutting things down, Tucker Garland gives up a 3-run homer, John Taylor melts down and when Domingo Nieto comes in with the bases loaded, he gives up a grand slam to Richie Zisk.

Matt Robinson got his first homer of the season... but two Blue Jay runners were picked off at first.

Final: White Sox 15, Blue Jays 3

WP - Dave Frost (1-0)
LP - Pete Vuckovich (0-2)

Record - 1-3

Kurt Bevacqua just signed with the Giants and since he was a Type A Free Agent, that nets me San Francisco's first round draft pick and a supplemental pick.

Now if only I can convince the owner to give me enough money to take advantage of it.

Mark Foster refused to get rattled after giving up some runs. He held the White Sox there and let his hitters do what they needed to come from behind and get the 4-3 win.

Toronto's home opener involves a very strongly pitched game my Mike Parrott... and a better one pitched by Doug Rau as the Royals win 2-1.

Matt Robinson hit his second homerun for the only run for the Jays.

Injuries really cost Toronto today. First matt Robinson left the game and Steve Bailey misplayed a ball in center allowing Kansas City to take a 2-1 lead. Then, in the 10th, tied at 2, Victor Cruz felt something pop as he gave up a gopher ball that would eventually give the Royals the 3-2 win.

Jays fans hold their breath to hear the status of these two important players.

Pete Vuckovich's third start was just as disappointing as the first two. A huge 3-run shot by Joe Nolan in the 9th made it close but the Royals still got the 5-4 win.

The Blue Jays won their first game at home of the season, downing the White Sox 2-0. It took a committee to shut out Chicago as Jim Clancy turned his ankle in the second and had to leave the game, but Dwight Bernard, Dennis DeBarr and Victor Cruz filled in admirably.

Solid pitching by Mark Foster and timely hitting led the Jays to a 6-4 win over the Tigers. Skip McBeath went 3 for 5 with his first major league homer. Oscar Gamble got his second of the season.

This was about Clear more than Baldwin. His performance demanded it. Hartsfield is immediately dropping Clear in as closer.

This was a crazy one and nobody can say the Blue Jay bats weren't in the game as the Tigers won 8-7. Ed Whitson continued the starter's problem as his 8 walks set a club record.
