And skipper goes to the 'pen.

Here's hoping they don't put the game out of reach.

Porcello needs to get the hook.

What sort of fastball does Victor Martinez have?

I'd guess a flat-line, 80-ish. Shouldn't be an issue getting hitters out.

Sure couldn't do much worse than the bunch from the last two games.

Oh, brother. The Tigers aren't having issues getting people on base today, they just can't pull the trigger to get them home. *grumbles under his breath*

The Twinkies staff is underrated.

Dear Lord

This pen is a huge problem. Making the Twinkies look like October heroes.

Part of the problem with the BP is that the starters are not lasting very long. Three games, and the longest any starter has gone is Porcello - with 5.1 IP (today).

That's not gonna help one bit when you have a suspect bullpen.

Wonder how long until they call up a starter from Toledo just to provide additional long-reliever support. Everyone except Smyly is a basically a one-inning guy. Either the starters start going deeper, or they really will be in trouble.

Twins 8, Tigers 2. [Boxscore]

Summary: Tigers bats in deep freeze as Twins take series.

Pitching: Porcello went the longest any Tigers starter has gone this season (5.1 innings), surrendering 3 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks.

The bullpen... well, to be honest, Alburquerque, Downs, and Dotel all performed well, not permitting any baserunners while striking out 4 in 2 innings.

The issue.. Villarreal. His outing was a horror novel in and of itself:

2/3 IP, 4H, 2 BB, 5 runs, 1K.

But that was just part of the problem, the other part were the bats.

They were stone-cold, stranding 10 and going a collective 1-10 with RISP. That obviously can't keep happening if they want to win.

Next game: Tigers home opener! Yankees @ Tigers, 1:08 Eastern. TV: FS-D, MLBN. Radio: 97.1 The Ticket. Fister will be starting.

Throw in his outing from yesterday, 2/3 innings, 1 hit, 2K's.

1.1 IP, 5h, 5 runs, 2 BB, 3K's, 11.25 ERA, 5.26 WHIP.

Not the best start to a season. Two or three more performances like today, he's back at Toledo.

Tigers 8, Yankees 3. [Boxscore]

Summary: Fielder roars, Smyly nails the coffin shut on a gorgeous opening-day win.

Pitching: Fister was a bit wild today as he went 5 innings, surrendering 3 runs on 6 hits, 2 walks, and 2 hit batters, one of which (Nunez) left the game in extreme pain.

Replay showed a ball directly to the chest area, probably sternum. Hopefully, it's only a bruise and not something broken. For a few minutes there, I thought he might have to be carted off the field on a stretcher, he was in so much pain. Scary moment.

(Edit: According to ESPN, he has been diagnosed with a bruised right bicep. Precautionary x-rays were negative. Whew. </edit> )

Smyly, on the other hand, was gorgeous! He went 4 innings, not permitting a single baserunner, striking out 5 to earn the save. It was pitching at its best.

Offense: Prince Fielder put on quite the display today, going 2-5 with 2 HR and 5 RBI. The first one was a 3-run laser blast (video) to RF (incidentally the Tigers first HR of the season) and a 2-run shot to Right (video) later on.

Avila also added a solo blast (video), Dirks added a SB, and Miggy and Infante both got ribbies.

It was a supremely satisfying opening day victory.

Next game: Saturday, Yanks @ Tigers, 4:05 Eastern. TV: Fox.

I'm a little concerned with Fister's outing. He was wild and had a severe lack of control, much like his spring starts. His movement looked really good but the walks and hits by pitch are a little concerning. I'm hoping I'm just overreacting like a typical Tigers fan.

Let's hope Scherzer is looking good for Saturday's game. I'd like to see at least one of the starters get past the 5th with their pitch count limit.

The Tigers seem to struggle against the Twins. That's what make in-division rivalries so cool. Teams that are overall bad, like the Twins, can own teams that are overall good, like the Tigers. That's why baseball is such a great sport.

Smyly was fantastic! That's why he's on the team. It great knowing he's there if one of the five starters needs a break or falls apart.

Give us 3 or 4 Smyly's, the bullpen issues will be fixed!

I am recovering from the post-opening day hangover. Man that is my favorite day of the year. So fun seeing the city alive like that.

Even from my seat in front of my TV watching the game on FSD, things looked like they were really jumping. Everyone was so excited. Opening day is truly special in Detroit.

It's the one thing Detroiters have to cheer about these days, and I'm extremely thrilled the Tigers have an owner committed to fielding quality teams and winning games. Pity the Lions can't get one like that, eh?
