Seattle just might reach 3.9 runs a game this upcoming season.

IRL, I hope so. In my OOTP Experiment, it's not looking too good.

Aug. 1, 2013 - Demoted 3B Eric Campbell to AAA Tacoma and recalled LF/3B Vincent Catricala to Seattle.

At the end of August, 2013 the M's are 51-78 sitting 15 GB in 5th place. They need to win 5 more games this season to avoid being the worst Mariners team in history.

Roster Expansion - September 2013 - Promoted P Erasmo Ramirez, C Jackson Williams, 1B Mickey Wiswall to Seattle.

Oct. 7, 2013 - The 2013 regular season comes to an end. The M's finished up at 69-93 at 15 GB in 4th place. The M's didn't finish up in the basement, but this season was hardly an improvement over 2012.

2013 AL West Final Standings:
LA Angels - 84-78 - 1st Place & Divisional Playoff Berth
Texas Rangers - 82-80 - 2nd Place
Houston Astros - 81-81 - 3rd Place
Seattle Mariners - 69-93 - 4th Place
Oakland Athletics - 63-99 - 5th Place

2013 Playoffs Summary:

Boston Red Sox defeat NY Yankees 14-2, Washington Nationals defeat San Diego Padres 6-5 in pigtail games.

Division Series: Tampa Bay Rays defeat Boston Red Sox 3 games straight. LA Angels defeat Detroit Tigers 3 games to 1. Washington Nationals defeat Colorado Rockies 3 games to 2. Atlanta Braves defeat Milwaukee Brewers 3 games straight.

League Championship Series: Tampa Bay Rays defeat LA Angels 4 games to 3, Washington Nationals defeat Atlanta Braves 4 games to 3.

2013 World Series Champion: Tampa Bay Rays defeat Washington Nationals 4 games to 3. This is Tampa's first world championship.

Safeco Field Experiment Analysis & Results

The 2013 Mariners team, according to my OOTP sim, were worse than both the 2012 OOTP Mariners AND the 2012 IRL Mariners. They managed to move out of the bottom of the league for Base on Balls, Runs Scored, and Home Runs. Otherwise the offense was just as bad. In addition, the 2013 M's pitching went right in the toilet, moving from amongst the best pitching AL teams in 2012 to one of the worst pitching AL teams in 2013.

My thoughts are that, due to the probabalistic basis on which OOTP is designed, there are several reasons why the results ended the way they did.

1. Moving the fences in helped the M's offense, but severely damaged their pitching staff.

2. The team that the M's are putting together for 2013 might actually be THAT bad, both offensively and defensively. The pitching performance of the team may have turned out the way it did because the M's put all their effort into rebuilding offense, but no real effort into maintaining the pitching and defense.

3. The offensive pieces that were acquired by the M's all performed well below expectations. IRL I'm a little bummed now that this is how the 2013 season might actually pan out for the M's.

Any other thoughts, comments, questions, complaints, etc.?
