Team News

1909 Detroit Tigers - The hottest bats we have seen thus far the Tigers hit .344 this month and scored 188 runs. They capped their efforts with an 18 run win over Baltimore that included 25 hits. Ty Cobb and this team have been overwhelming.

1994 New York Yankees - The Yankees have a good month and do it mostly with the lowest ERA in the league at 3.39. Bernie Williams is hitting .410 as Buck Showalters team set the tone early by winning their first five games.

1975 Kansas City Royals - The Royals only hit nine home runs in the month but did enough to have a winning record. They have been winning close games and have the best bullpen ERA in the league lead by Lindy McDaniel who has five saves and has not allowed an earned run.

1895 Baltimore Orioles - Hughie Jennings is the best leadoff man in the league with a .372 average and the Orioles with their three home runs have played reasonably well. The Birds are second in runs scored but their lack of bullpen use means that a bad starter on any given day will have to work out of any mess he gets into.

2002 Oakland A's - The worse team hitting in the league is offset abit by the best defense in the league as the Athletics finish the month with an even record. The starting pitching has been good lead by Tim Hudson who has had some hard luck in his three losses but allowed only a .245 OAVG.

1935 New York Yankees - Lou Gehrig came out strong with his .383 average and 17 RBI in April but the Yankees lost 16 games. Left Gomez has an ERA at 5.74. Bill Dickey is only hitting .242 and needs to turn it around in the middle of the order. New York lost 8 of 9 to end the month.

1924 New York Giants - Franckie Frisch has been a fun player to watch with his 8 triples allready and play all over the field. The Giants however havent impressed very much with a team EAR at 4.73. The Giants went 5-10 on the road and have not hit well with runners on base.

2003 Chicago Cubs - The tone was set when the Cubs were swept by the Yankees to open the season at home. The pitching has been a nightmare with the wonder arms of Kerry Wood and Mark Prior anything but as they have combined for 11 losses already. The Cubs do lead the league in home runs and Corey Patterson is hitting .340 at the top of the lineup with 17 runs scored.

Team News

1909 Detroit Tigers - Ty Cobb suffered a seperated shoulder and missed most of the month, when he came back on the 25 the centerfielder hit .667 and now has an incredible season average of .471. Cobb is truly making a case that he is the greatest hitter to ever play and the Tigers remain strong in first place.

1994 New York Yankees - This Yankee team has impressed and has the best pitching in the league after two months. Jimmy Key, Melido Perez, and pitcher of the month Jim Abbott all have ERA's under 3.00. The loss of Boggs with an injury will hurt but Buck Showalter has this team playing well and confident.

1975 Kansas City Royals - The Royals have the strongest bullpen in the league with Lindy McDaniel excelling as closer. Al Cowens is hitting .349 while Hal McRae is up to .320. A young and athletic team the Royals have been a nice story.

2002 Oakland A's - David Justice has been injured but the smart A's are playing close to .500 and showing some fire. Scott Hattenberg even spent some time suspended after he charged the mound against Mark Prior and the Cubs. Jeremy Giambi for all his bad press is showing some production hitting .319 for the season.

1895 Baltimore Orioles - John McGraw is hitting .380 and the intimidating style the Orioles play has them at .500. The team has stole 111 bases and 304 runs, both second in the league. The Orioles will have to stay healthy and have a fight to get into the top four.

1924 New York Giants - The most runs allowed in the league but the Giants still believe they can get it done and had a winning month after a terrible April. Franckie Frisch is hitting .399 and the offense has been good while the pitching is among the worse in the league with a 5.34 ERA.

2003 Chicago Cubs - Mark Prior and Kerry Wood are a combined 4-18 for games that they have started as the Cubs have scored the least amount of runs so far. Sammy Sosa only has four home runs while the team onbase percentage of .331 is last in the league. Dusty Baker has instersted Eric Karros in the lineup.

1935 New York Yankees - The Yankees have had hardluck thus far and are just not pulling through when the games are on the line. Some would say a lack of a star or leader on the team is at fault, the team is 0-6 in extra inning games. The pitching has allowed the lowest OBAVG in the league at .261 and even with that the team is in the cellar.

Season 3 team News

1909 Detroit Tigers - The Tigers went 18-9 in the month as appear to be the cream of this season. Cobb still has a .434 average going into July while Sam Crawford has driven in 85 runs. The team is also first in stolen bases with 220 already. The team has been dominant at times.

1994 New York Yankees - Buck Showalter always seems to get the best out of his teams. With leaders like Paul Oneill who is hitting .331 and Don Mattingly who has fit in at the #2 spot the team is hard to beat. Jim Abbott is having a fine season with an ERA of 2.39 while Jimmy Key remains the ace with 11 wins.

1895 Baltimore Orioles - Sixteen wins in June for the Orioles who are proving that old school baseball isnt easy to beat. John McGraw is hitting .386 while Dan Brouthers is at .373. The pitching seems stretched to say the least but the Orioles have played well, especially at home with 27 wins already.

2002 Oakland A's - The most home runs in the league with 59 cant say much for saber baseball but the A's are hanging in there well. Barry Zito is a bit of a concern with 11 losses already but submarine Chad Bradford has 16 saves and a 2.17 ERA. Ray Durham has smacked 10 home runs out of the lead off spot.

1975 Kansas City Royals - A disaster of a month for the Royals who fell out of the top four and lost 19 games. The .268 team batting average is last in the league as is a .320 OBP. Finding a consistent starter has been an ongoing struggle for the club with the Likes of Dennis Leonard with an ERA at 5.52. The Royals are also 17-25 at Royals Stadium.

1935 New York Yankees - After a winning month of 15 wins for these Yanks the race towards the top is not out of the question. The pitching has been good enough for third in the league but Bill Dickey is only hitting .252 and the leading batter on the team is Frankie Corsetti at only .302. Lou Gehrig has 13 home runs to lead the league.

1924 New York Giants - Travis Jackson was lost for the season which is a huge loss in the middle of the infield, thirty four year old Heinie Groh will try and fil the void. The pitching is an even bigger sore spot as all the numbers off the mound for the Giants are last in the league including their play with the glove as they lead the league with 102 errors.

2003 Chicago Cubs - After a good start to the month the Cubs tanked their season with a stretch of losing 16 of 20 games. Mark Prior is 3-11 and Kerry Wood has a 5.00 ERA. The Cubs have also scored the least amount of runs in the league at 328 and Dusty Baker has already prepared for a long finish to the season. Sammy Sosa only has 8 home runs.

Team News

1909 Detroit Tigers - Ty Cobb continues his incredible season and is hitting .432 with two months left to play. Cobb also has 60 steals and an OBOP of .510. The Tigers have scored almost 700 runs already and Sam Crawford has 119 RBI with two months to play.

1994 New York Yankees - Wade Boggs has upped his average to .350 and the Yankees have kept a good pace behind the sizzling Tigers. Jimmy Key has 13 wins and Melido Perez has struck out 93 men as the pitching for this team is still tops in the league including 21 saves out of the pen for Bob Wickman.

2002 Oakland A's - Oakland really made a jump in July and won 16 games to seperate themselves in the top three. Mark Mulder is 11-6 and leading a good staff, the team is 20-13 in one run games. This A's team also leads the league in walks and home runs, an unconventional combination that produces runs.

1895 Baltimore Orioles - The season may be catching up with the Orioles as they had a very hard July at 8-17 and are hanging by a thread in the fourth spot. An injury to Arlie Pon in the rotation has made things even more challanging and Dad Clarkson will try and hold the fort for a few weeks. The hitting remains solid with a team .303 average but doom may be on the horizon for this slipping team.

1935 New York Yankees - After being almost an afterthought for most of the season the Yankees have poised themselves to make a run and mobe on. A winning month has them only a half a game out of fourth and this team may peak at the right time. The starting pitching lead by Johnny Allen has been improving although the team average of .271 is still last in the league.

1975 Kansas City Royals - George Brett put together a 21 game hitting streak this month and the Royals still have alot to play for. Lack of speed and a leadoff man is hurting this club with Freddie Patek not cutting it at the top with the .241 average and only 43 runs. No starter on the team has more the nine wins going into August.

1924 New York Giants - The Giants need to get hot but have the time to get back into things. The pitching remains the worst in the league as the team has allowed the most runs in the league and Jack Bentley has lost 15 games alteady. With the bat Ross Youngs is hitting .383 and is having an all around excellent year for an offense that has been doing fine.

2003 Chicago Cubs - A winning record in the month of July means very little for this team that cant pick itself out of the cellar. The bullpen is atrocios for this team with leads disapearing like a magic trick. Playing for pride and getting this team to finish well will be a challange.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Team News

1909 Detroit Tigers - George Mullin has won 22 games and the Tigers still lead in most statistical catagories. Sam Crawford has had a monster season hitting .361 with 141 RBI and 105 runs. The story however remains the electric Ty Cobb who has everyones attention with his .432 average with a month to go; surely Cobb will finish the season over .400.

2002 Oakland A's - What a month and a season for the A's as they won 19 games in August and are making a run at first place. The A's have been the hottest team in the league in the second half and have done so playing like a team with smart, defense, and pitching. Oakland is 43-28 at home and have three more games with the Tigers left. Mark Mulder and Tim Hudson have combined for 30 wins thus far.

1994 New York Yankees - A very poor month for this Yankee team just when we were singing their praises. The Yanks lost 18 games in August and will need to play better to secure a spot. Wade Boggs is hitting .346 for the year while Paul O'Neil is at 3.30. Jimmy Key has struggled on the mound of late and has compiled a rocky 14-16 record for the season.

1895 Baltimore Orioles - The Orioles have a two game lead in the fourth spot and knowing their talent will fight with any means to finish on top. Hughie Jennings has 78 RBI out of the leadoff spot, Kid Gleason is the only starter in the lineup who is not hitting over .300. With no bench and no depth, the story of this team and how they can go.

1924 New York Giants - John McGraw has pushed his team into gear at the exact right time. The Giants are making a hard run at the top four and are now only two games back. Art Nehf has 16 wins although most Giant games are high scoring affairs. High Pockets Kelly, Hack Wilson, and Ross Youngs all have over 80 RBI playing into the final month. The Giants will have their chance as they play the Orioles six times in September.

1935 New York Yankees - These Yankees also remain in the hunt and a hot last month could just get them in. George Selkirk actually leads the team with 84 RBI while Lou Gehrig has 78 with 20 home runs, but many expected more from the Iron Horse. Lefty Gomez has a 10-17 record that hasnt impressed thus far, in the final month the Yankees will need their Hall of Famers to come through and it may and could just happen that way.

1975 Kansas City Royals - Nineteen losses for the Royals in August and they can coast the rest of the season and most all hope is gone. The Royals just never hit the way they were suppose to and their young age may have been too evident against this opposition. The biggest fight for the Royals is now to avoid falling past the Cubs in last place and maybe play the role of a spoiler.

2003 Chicago Cubs - Mark Prior won his last 11 starts but the rest of the team never responded and the Cubs will finish things off with no chance. Joe Borowski does have 30 saves going into the last month but was the only dependable arm out of the pen. Kenny Lofton is another good story as the 36 year old outfielder did hit .330 this season. Kerry Wood however could not get that ERA under 6.00 and opponents hit .296 against him.

Season 3
Final Standings

Tigers Win Pennant; Playoff Pending for Final Spot
Ty Cobb and the 1909 Detroit Tigers turned the baseball world on its head with their pennant winning season but even more so the performance of their star players. Ty Cobb hit .440 for the season, the highest batting average anyone could have ever imagined, while others like George Mullin won 25 games and Sam Crawford drove in 155 runs.

Billy Bean built the right roster and the 2002 Oakland A's impressed as they finished second and leaned on a very good starting rotation lead by Tim Hudson. The 1994 Yankees will move on with their 87 wins and the top team pitching in the league. Scott Kamienieki went 19-9 and Buck Showaleter may well deserve top manager of this season.

Fourth place went down to the last day and a one game playoff will be needed. The 1895 Orioles had the lead going into the final month but the 1935 Yankees put together a run that included an 11 game winning streak that had them with a game lead on the final day of the season. Melido Perez shut out the the Yankees and the Orioles won on the same day to end even with their rivals and an extra dramatic game will decide the final qualifying spot.

The last three spots were very closely contested but the 1924 Giants fell apart in September and joined the 75 Royals and 03 Cubs with less then 75 wins for the season.

Holy Pile of Hits, Batman! TY COBB! That would be arguably the greatest season in baseball history. Barry Bonds (12.1 / 2001) and Babe Ruth (12.0 / 1921) are the only players to match a 12.0 WAR, but they got to beat up on plenty of bad pitching staffs. Cobb did this facing elite pitching staffs every game!

Awards

Batter of the month: Bernie Williams - 99 Yankees (.426, 2 HR, 26 RBI, 7 2B)

Pitcher of the month: Mike Stanton - 99 Yankees (5-0, 1 save, 8 K, 1.96 ERA)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Team Notes

1999 New York Yankees - Even with Mariano Rivera struggling the 99 Yankees showed their muscle and won 19 games in April. The team OBP of .390 is tops in the league and Roger Clemens along with Andy Pettite have yet to lose a game they have started.

1912 New York Giants - Christy Mathewson has an ERA near 4 but the Giants are hanging tough. Beals Becker is batting .380 and the club also as expected stole the most bases with 64 in the month.

1957 New York Yankees - Mickey Mantle has gotten off to a flying start with 24 RBI in the month but the Yankees have only hit 13 home runs as a team. The Giants did sweep this team to end the month leaving them wondering.

1918 Chicago Cubs - The Cubs are running and playing small ball well but still need more from their pitchers. Hippo Vaughn has a 5.23 ERA but Harry Weaver has seven saves out of the pen. Charlie Hollocher is hitting an impressive .368 and the team is 6-1 away from home.

1924 Pittsburgh Pirates - Kiki Cuyler is the engine of this team with 46 hits and 23 runs thus far. The team did suffer a seven game losing streak that brough them to the middle of the pack after a hot start. Like many team pitching is at a minimum for the Bucks so far.

2005 Cleveland Indians - Cliff Lee has really struggled allowing 20 earned runs already. Johnny Peralta is hitting well with 21 RBI and three home runs while Grady Sizemore is hitting .362. The Indians however have the highest bullpen ERA in the league and no real closer yet.

1906 Cleveland Naps - Nap Lajoie cant do it all on his own and even with a strong start by him the Cleveland team lost 17 games. The starting pitching ERA for the team is 6.08 and the club has been out of a number of games early; Only three arms in the bullpen isnt helping either.

1964 Philadelphia Phillies - The worse hitting in the league has hampered the Phillies to compete. Jim Bunning lost all five games of the six games he has started and the Phillies are 5-13 at Connie Mack Stadium.

Awards

Best hitter of the Month: Derek Jeter - 99 Yankees (.431, 4 HR, 27 R, 28 RBI, 9 2B in May)

Best Pitcher of the Month: Otto Hess - 06 Naps (4-2, 1.37 ERA, 19 K, .188 OBA in May)

Injuries

Nap Lajoie - 06 Naps (4 weeks)
Kiki Cuyler - 24 Pirates (4 weeks)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Team Notes

1999 New York Yankees - The Yankees are already 20 games over .500 and have the best hitting in the league in almost every catagory. Derek Jeter batting third actually leads the league in RBI with 48. Bernie Willaims is batting .409.

1924 Pittsburgh Pirates - The 4 week injury to Kiki Cuyler wont help but the Piraes are hanging in strong. The Pirates have actually allowed the fewest runs in the league and Wilbur Cooper has 6 wins and a 2.91 ERA. The Pirates have likely been the most impressive team in Season 4 after two months.

1912 New York Giants - The Giants have the best throwing rotation in the league and Christy Mathewson isnt even at his best with an ERA+ of 117. The team has stolen 117 bases lead by Fred Merkle who has 20. The Giants still have high aspirations and great team chemistry.

1906 Cleveland Naps - The Naps saw an opening and won 20 games to sit in the coveted 4th spot. Otto Hess has emerged as the team ace and on offense Elmer Flick has complimented Nap Lajoie well. Lajoie is injured and will concentrate only on managing for the next month.

1957 New York Yankees - While fans were waiting for this team to make a run they went 10-18 in May and have more concerns then answers. The Yanks have lost 9 of 10 one run games and have not been hitting in the clutch. Other then Mantle, the team has only hit a shocking 21 home runs as a team.

1964 Philadelphia Phillies - Johnny Callison is having a heck of a season and Dick Allen is complimenting him well but this Phillies team isnt going anywhere. They have scored the least runs in the league as a group and dont take a walk with a team .327 OBP. Only the epic futility of the Cubs have kept this team out of last place.

1918 Chicago Cubs - The Cubs had one of the worst months anyone has ever seen. The Cubs lost 25 of 28 games and couldnt find a way to a win. The team has hit one home run and has the worst offense in the league while Pete Alexander is sitting out with an oblique strain. How a team goes from winning 15 games in April, to 3 in May is what makes these seasons so great.
