I'm surprised and I'm not surprised by this review. From its inception as a spin-off from PC Format (early issues included stars of the new CD-Rom revolution such as Day of The Tentacle and Sam and Max Hit the Road), PC Gamer became the most widely respected PC game review magazine in Britain. But this was a long time ago and you will find that some of its most seasoned writers are now over at Rock, Paper, Shotgun amongst other places. IMO the magazine has been in a steady decline for the past 8 years or more, the reviewers get younger and, seemingly as a result, the reviews get shorter, less detailed in general, and contain more immature padding as time goes on.
But whilst this review in and of itself is neither damning nor overly enthusiastic about OOTP it's pretty churlish to make off-the-cuff comments about an entire nation based on what one person has written.
And in defence of the
memory of when PC Gamer was still good I should point out that that same magazine published a 5 page article a few years back entitled "Why Out of the Park Baseball 9 is (still) the Best Management Game of All Time" (I believe OOTP12 was out at the time but the reviewer said that he didn't want to buy any versions since 9 because he had become so attached to it). Unfortunately, I can't be more specific as to the exact issue that contained this article as I no longer have my collection of PC Gamer back issues. But it's pretty funny that you guys are slating this reviewer for comparison with FM given that the guy I just mentioned spent 2 of those 5 pages explaining why OOTP was
better than FM. So
