Moment of the Match

"The streak" is the story in this one, as in 11 straight rounds that the Punching Bags failed to tally a point. From the time Al McCoy took the 3rd stanza from Kevin McBride, until Joe Kennedy starched Mervine Thompson with a flurry of blows culminated with a left hook, the home fans had nary a thing to cheer. It was a hapless display that left team captain Al McCoy fuming afterwards, vowing the lads would be back!

Moment of the Match

It was incomparable John L Sullivan, looking sluggish and uninterested going through the motions against Roman Greenberg in round 1 that lit the fire and turned a match that was still within reach for Louisville into a rout. The power of John L is always a wildcard and a single uppercut put Greenberg into a slumber, inspiring the crowd and teammate Tom Heeney who destroyed Terry Hinke to close the show. If their performances continue Buckeye may want to look at expanding their small arena before next season, as the fans are sure to be clamoring for more tickets.

Round 4 might be a bit early for the wooden spoon matchup, but the Punching Bags - Ice Tea match is looking likely to this point.

Moment of the Match

With the Louisville Clays coming off a demoralizing loss in round 2 and trailing the favored Haymakers 5-3, it was 'The Old Mongoose' a disappointing 0-2-1 coming in, who determined enough has enough. Boxing masterfully Archie Moore frustrated, befuddled and dominated Gerry Cooney, giving the power punching Irishman a boxing lesson. Staked to a 1 point lead, Hinke held on for the draw to give the Clays the upset win in front a delirious home crowd.

Moment of the Match

Outside of another knockout win by Corrie Sanders, things looked gloomy for the Cornjabbers. Herbie Hide had been dethroned and they needed Eddie Neilson to score a sweep or early knockout as they trailed 7-5. Neilson responded brilliantly, tearing into Joe Lannon in the 1st round, he opened a gash over his left eye and had his right eye swelling. Midway through round two the cut worsened as Neilson sniped away and the fight was stopped, giving Nebraska the comeback win!

Moment of the Match

One would never imagine Tor Hamer to be mentioned in the moment of the match, but the journeyman did the unthinkable. Dropping unbeaten and heavily favored Charley Retzlaff in the 1st and then stealing the 3rd round to set his team up to win the match with 2 fights left. Unfortunately Marvin Hart beat favored Tommy Gibbons and David Haye took the first round off giving Bears Unstable all they needed to squeak out the win.

Looks like I will take my usual place in the standings, LAST PLACE, but I did hold the Chilton Cup for 2 secs. Great work on the League Lee.

Thank you, this is a lot of fun.

I am liking this short round format more and more, anything at all can happen and a stoppage can turn an entire match around. Plus with only the referee scoring, a lot depends on the random ref you get. I have the points set to not show when I watch the matches, but in watching that Gibbons/Hart fight I thought it was a 2-1 for Tommy. He definitely landed more in the last round, but Hart's blows must have been judged more effective. That one round would have given you the win too.

I really thought you were done going into that last match, but Neilson was a wrecking ball, his best fight for sure.

This was a surprise, since Moore has been starting slow, but he took it Cooney and never let him get set. Cooney never even had him hurt.

Moment of the Match

Once again the vaunted right hand of John L Sullivan was the talk of the evening. 'The Boston Strongboy' used his lethal trademark punch to blow open a close match and propel Buckeye Promotions to a comfortable win. With Ice Tea Boxing hanging tough, Buckeye captured the last 9 points to run away with it and retain their place atop the WTB standings after 3 rounds. Sullivan recording win number 5, tied with Corrie Sanders for tops among WTB fighters.

Agreed, but things can change as fighters reach pre-prime at different times. We had our first fighter get there in the match I am about to post

Moment of the Match

The curse of the Chilton Cup continues as Jersey Joe Walcott captured the honor in Al McCoy's first defense. The title change came in the middle of a strong 8-1 start by Ice Tea Boxing that proved too much for the home team to overcome in the final two matches. What has yet to be proven is that a fighter can hold on to the elusive Chilton Cup for more than 1 match, Jersey Joe will be the next to try.

Moment of the Match

Tied at 7 going into the final match it seemed only fitting that the 'Dollar Twenty Five Wonder' Eddie Neilson was on deck for the Nebraska Cornjabbers. Undaunted by the pressure of the moment, Neilson rallied after losing the first round to take two straight against Harry Persson in a slugfest of epic proportions. One of only six undefeated fighters in the WBT at the start of round 4, Neilson continues to defy the oddsmakers as his record remains unblemished. With the victory over powerful Buckeye Promotions, Nebraska is assured of sole possesion of 1st place heading into round 5.

WOW!!! Unexpected victory by the Cornjabbers. The Cornjabbers will be back in the gym Monday except Eddie. I'm going to give him the day off and let him rest up in my cabin down on the crick and enjoy all the frog legs and corn mash he wants.

I think Eddie Neilson may well become the Tim Tebow of the WTB League.

Moment of the Match

Quinn Navarre, added in the final round of the draft for a paltry $0.75 1 year deal needed no words to make a statement on this night. A solid 3-1 underdog to Charley Retzlaff, Navarre shook Retzlaff with a hard hook to the temple and nearly knocked him through the ropes with a furious followup assault that left Charley face down for the 10 count and provided the difference for Hebron, as both Marvin Hart and Gerry Cooney did what was expected of them in the final two matches.
