No effect really, it just increases the number of times Tuck will appear.

Incidentally, regarding the full list of nicknames above, I think it's possible that you have to search and replace "1 " (1 and 2 spaces without quotes) to avoid crashing, but hopefully I will have a .dat file before long.

Ok, here's the thing:

For example, a player enters the draft, named Alehouse Harrold. The issue is not so much that you'll get too many Alehouses - if you peruse B-R.com, you will see that up to a certain point in history players going by nicknames make up a fairly large pct. of all players.

The issue is that you might have two Alehouses. Or Twinkletoes, or Rottweilers - nicknames that you'd like to think are unique.

I think the frequency of nicknames is pretty much fine as I have it now. The thing is I can never control lottery luck, and you could get 3 or 4 Alehouses no matter how much tweaking I do.

What I do, since the nicknames are for the most part together at the end of the fnames.dat file, is keep a link to the .dat file on my desktop. If Alehouse comes up, I pluck that name out of the DB forever. Not only do I not really want another Alehouse in my current league, I don't want any in any other leagues of mine either.

It's just, how many people are willing to do that sort of thing. I can make it as easy as possible, but it will still require some effort.

Either way I'll try to upload the file somewhere in the next few days. I think historical/fictional simmers will enjoy using this name file. There's about 30 Toms, 30 Dicks, and 30 Harrys for every 1 Brickyard, and that still may not be enough.

Allrighty...here's "old names incl. lots of nicknames" fnames.dat file v1.

PLEASE:

Save your old fnames.dat file with a different name; "copy of fnames.dat" is shockingly convenient and easy to use.

This file will need to be renamed from fnames.txt to fnames.dat.

Backing up your league might also be a swell idea. You never know. I make no promises that this file will work perfectly. It has not failed me in tests though.

This file is not ideal for post-50s or post-60s leagues, depending on your idea of what's a modern name. Expect very few Jasons, LaSchelles and Austins to pop up in your leagues (sorry GForce). Expect plenty of Toms, Dicks and Harrys.

I've made some effort to balance the number of nicknames that pop up, but Twinkletoes, as an example, came up so often in my tests, purely by chance, that I took it out spitefully. Other names you will find will not agree with you. Umbrella Jones has a ring to it. Umbrella Kwietniewski does not. If you play in challenge mode, you'll want to think 2x about using a file like this.

Far and away, the best name that I got out of this was a pitcher on my Philadelphia team named "Speed Bowling." He looks like he'll eventually make the big leagues. It took every ounce of strength I had not to edit him, but you know, from Lu Blue to Drungo Hazewood, baseball's had some pretty suspect names. Someday, Speed Bowling may be a Philadelphia legend, like cheesesteaks.
