Yeah, I skipped that at first, but now I'm having other problems with the db - this is what I posted in the Mods thread:

There must be something wrong with your copy of the database. 1936 should have 185 players import. If Holder is being duplicated in 1936 then it's either your setting or the league are messed up or your copy of the DB is messed up.

Does it make a difference if you point the db to master.csv or to historical_database.odb? I'll dl the db again and restart it, but if it's not that, what setting could it be?

The game is supposed to use the historical_database.odb if it exists in the directory but this has proven to not be the case. You should always point to the .odb file.

i don't really know where to post this so i figured i'd post here among the great roster makers.
how do i go about editing the records of the league? say for example i'd like to remove bonds hitting 73 home runs, would i just edit his home run total in the master.csv or do i need to do it elsewhere to? i'd like a tutorial on how to eidt or modify a roster for this game as i can't seem to wait for others to make them. any help would be great and sorry for hisjacking the thread |

I've put off ordering OOTP 12 until the final patch comes out. Bad experience with OOTP 11 with modifying databases causing fielders to be rendered beyond useless (all zeroes at every position: 50-75 errors per team per game...Uh...Yeah). Learned the hard way that it's better to wait for the finished product than to order the current one only to have to put it on the shelf and go back to the previous version, and won't make that mistake again. Judging from the number of threads started by people who can't play the game the way they want to with this version, it's not a bad way to go, except of course if everybody was to do it. Then Markus wouldn't find out what's wrong with the game, and maybe quit due to lack of interest. People aren't that patient though. Most people want to do the equivalent of ripping open their Christmas presents at 5:00 AM on Christmas morning, whilst inhaling a bunch of chocolate and tear around the house screaming with excitement, waking everybody up when release day rolls around. However the time I didn't spend playing the game was spent on figuring out my settings, and looking back now, while tedious and disappointing at the time, it was definitely time well spent. When I went to set things up, the question I asked myself for every setting was: I may want to play this way, but if I do, will it help or hurt the AI? Whichever one would hurt it less was the one I would go with, because I wanted the AI to be as strong as possible. Generally that leads to a drastically simplified game absent of the more complex rules of baseball that, last time I checked, the AI still seems to struggle with, and while that may not be ideal from a "this is how it really happens in baseball" standpoint, it creates the greater challenge IMHO. If you can figure out your main goal, then you just ask which setting will get you closer to it as you decide on each setting. Last edited by actionjackson; 07-26-2011 at 11:25 AM. |

What I would suggest you do however, and bear in mind this is only a suggestion, is to modify the era_stats.txt file located in the database folder in your Documents/OOTPD/OOTPB12/ folder by copying a year which is more to your liking repeatedly over each of the steroid (methinks to quote John Belushi: "You no like-a da juice") era seasons. Again make sure you make a backup copy of the era_stats.txt file before modifying it, and save it somewhere, so you can always go back to things the way they were, if you don't like the changes. 1986 and 1987 were a bit inflated, and then things were kind of "normal" from 1988 through 1992 for some inexplicable reason, but from 1993 through however far you want to take it (certainly not 2010 and so far in 2011 though), things got a little crazy thanks to four new teams, which diluted the pitching talent, juiced balls and juiced ballplayers. Changing the totals should drive down the number of league wide HR hit provided you start your sim about 10 to 20 years prior to the seasons you're interested in playing, in order to work out all the recalc kinks. Bonds will most likely still lead the league, but he shouldn't come anywhere near 73, if you pick a year like (my personal favourite, though I don't play this way) 1985, to overwrite the years you don't like, when Darrell Evans was the only player to hit 40 homeruns, and he hit 40 right on the nose. Asking questions is not hijacking. Ask away. You've got two of the best in Gambo and Spritze making regular appearances in this thread. They'll let you know if you're hijacking, but I seriously doubt they would consider polite, courteous questions like the one above to be in that category. I guess it all depends on whether or not you're using a bandana to disguise your face as you type this though, because as we all know everyone who wears a bandana is a terrorist, and therefore enjoys hijacking.

so if i go and edit all the juiced home run records and gave them all totals lower then Maris, that is who will show up as the leader next time i load my league? that and renameing my historical_database.odb for backup sakes
i'd assume edit the year in pictchers or teams and get the same results? |

PA/HR: 1985: 44.50 2000: 33.42 2001: 34.25 2010: 40.22 2011: 43.00 Bonds (2001): 9.10 Theoretically, if you were to use 1985 totals as your base, Bonds would be brought down to 44.50/34.25 = 1.30*9.10 = 11.83 PA/HR. Given the 664 PA he had in 2001, that would take his total HR to 664/11.83 = 56.12 or 56 over the course of a full season. It wouldn't hit that every time due to statistical variance, but it should significantly reduce that crazy 73 number, and may even keep Bonds, McGwire, and Sosa from overtaking Maris for the all-time single season mark from 1998-2001. The problem (at least from my point of view: take it with a truckload of salt) with taking HR away from some but not others, is that even 10 or 15 years on, we have no real way of knowing whose HR totals were inflated artificially, and whose were hit naturally, nor do we know how much of an effect there was. We know there was an effect on Bonds, McGwire, and Sosa, but how much of one? How many HR were the result of greenies back in baseball's "golden age" (as if there isn't a golden age going on right now in front of our noses). I would probably put greenies in the performance enabling, rather than performance enhancing drugs class, but getting a guy onto the field when he normally would be taking a day off for whatever reason does allow him to put up more numbers than he might have been able to, without that extra "boost". I tend to look at things on a league wide basis rather than worrying about what various individuals are doing in the league. I do that because it's easier (i.e. I don't have to play God and guestimate who should hit what: it's a can of worms I don't feel comfortable opening) and because when HR totals and scoring get crazy high, quite frankly I lose interest. It's not baseball anymore. It's an arcade game. Sure chicks dig the long ball. I dig it too, in its proper place. Interestingly enough, there have been 17 seasons in baseball history where HR have been hit at a rate of 1.00 or more per team game. Want to take a guess at which 17?...1987, and 1994-2009...Hmmm...That's why I say take your favourite year and paper over the ones you don't like with one that you do because you'll never be able to nail down every last cheater, but you can let the air out of the entire league's tires. Much more efficient. Last edited by actionjackson; 07-26-2011 at 05:20 PM. |

D'oh! (when is Markus gonna get that d'oh smilie for us anyway?) Just realized this most likely isn't what you're looking for OutS|der. You just want to make sure that the record is not held by Bonds, Sosa, or McGwire when you start a game after they're done I think. Oh well, it helped me clarify what I might do when I come to those 17 years. Thanks for bringing it up, and sorry for my lousy comprehension skills.

i tried editing the total home runs of bonds but it still shows him holding the record with 73 even though i edited that year for him to have 54, what am i doing wrong and how can i change a players history? is this even possible? |

Hey Gambo,
I finally downloaded your datatabase and decided to start a league in 1950 - I want all the players to hit the draft the year they made their *professional* debut as opposed to their ML debut, and it sounds like your database will allow me to do that. However, when I create the league, I end up with about 1200 minor league or foreign players in the FA pool that weren't currently assigned to ML teams. This, by itself, is not a problem, but I sorted them by overall rating, and there are a lot of guys with fantastic ratings who had great stats in the minors but never amounted to anything in the majors. I'm all about having an alternate universe and having some ML players surprise me by being better than they actually were, but I don't really want to see career minor leaguers (a la Crash Davis) appearing on the level with Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle. I'm assuming this has something to do with the settings I used when I did my import. What do you recommend? I was thinking of just deleting anyone who hadn't played a ML game in the last three years or who had one star OVR/POT or less. Also, I noticed Willie Mays in that same FA pool. I checked his minor league stats and he debuted with an affiliate of the NYG in 1950, but for some reason he didn't get assigned to their team. Maybe I need to expand my number of minor league affiliates. Thanks for any help you can provide! |

Atchally Willie Mays made his professional debut with the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro League in 1948. They weren't affiliated with nobody, no how, no way. I doubt this impacts the Gambo db though. But there it is.

Yeah I did some extra research into Mays and noticed that he did debut in the Negro League. But apparently he signed on with the Giants' minor league affiliate in May of 1950. I don't have the CSVs in front of me to look at them, but if he spent any time at all in the Negro League in 1950, maybe that's why his neutralized stats line for that year shows "FA" as the teamID instead of "NY1". That's my working theory at least. I still have the issue of some career minor leaguers still being too highly rated on initial import. As an example, SP Bill Bradford imported with real ratings (i.e. scouting disabled) of 8/18/14 (on a 20 scale). In real life he pitched one major league game in 1956, allowing two homers and a walk over two innings. But over 10 minor league seasons, he went 90-74 with a 3.67 ERA. The neutralized stats in the database drop his numbers slightly (87-79, 4.13 ERA), but still OOTP is projecting him as a "dominant hurler". Any workarounds I can use to "downgrade" players like this in an efficient manner? I already deleted all FAs who were 30 or older, hadn't played any games in the majors yet, and had OVR/POT ratings of one star or less. But I still have 670 FAs to sort through! Thanks! |

1) For my database you have to use neutralized.
2) Also, keep in mind there are two Gambo DBs last year, one works with the transaction database (you'll see the end of the file says wtrans). Pretty much the only difference is that the transactions one sets the organziations like they were on opening day. e.g. Don Mattingly was drafted in June 1979, as of opening day he is a FA but when you have real transactions on he goes to the Yanks on draft day. The regular one should have him with the Yankees as of opening day. Also, Willie Mays will be a FA in both.
