Because sometimes you get what you pay for. I've been disappointed with OOTP's historical results in the past, which is why I switched to Action for historical play a few years back. Action provides better results for the way I like to play (which is without as-played lineups, by the way)...whether that's due to the game engine, rating system, whatever...it's just my personal preference.

My OOTP play is strictly fictional...for that, there is no peer.

One of the weaknesses of just using stats to create ratings is that some stats, like fielding, don't necessarily give you the right results. Plus there are subtleties in the way each player plays. Wee Willie Keeler used to get on base primarily by chopping the ball into the ground and he'd be at first right around the time the ball came down from it's first high bounce. Believe it was called a Baltimore chop. Some pitchers are primarily ground ball pitchers. Arm strength is simmed pretty badly in OOTP(not because it's OOTP's fault, but because of the limitations of the historical stats).

Strat-O-Matic for decades has carefully built their seasons by reading accounts of every game ever played that season and they use their judgement to assign certain ratings like range and arm strength. I'd imagine that if Action is charging season-by-season, then they are being just as thorough in making every player unique, and performing just as they do in real life. You simply can't get that from the Lahman database, where Kevin Brown is going to be essentially the same pitcher as Roger Clemens in the late 90s.

I think hitting ability is easily recreated from the stats. You may not get the Baltimore chop references in the pbp, but Keeler will hit about the right number of singles, whether you are using OOTP, Action, or any of the other major competitors. Fielding ability is much, much harder to recreate. The primary stat is Range Factor, which depends a lot more on the pitcher than the individual fielders (a shortstop will make more plays behind a ground ball pitcher than a power pitcher) The advanced metrics aren't in Lahman, and they're just plain unavailable for the older seasons, anyway. DIPS is very fielding dependent, so problematic fielding ratings have a greater effect than in other games.

This feature was the reason I pre-ordered v12, and I am very much looking forward to it. I have run my replays with historical lineups and transactions for years with APBA Baseball for Windows and Diamond Mind Baseball, and I have had a lot of fun along the way. I have learned a tremendous amount of history, not just baseball history, through my replays and have shared the experience on my web site, A Second Time through the Order.

On 6/20, I am anxious to begin another project with OOTP, perhaps 1920 forward. And looking forward to sharing the experience.

Enjoy!
