Tim McCarver And Cardinals Light Up The Night The St. Louis Cardinals had the biggest output thus far in the Cooperstown season and pounded the Dodgers by scoring 19 runs. The Cardinals appear to be much stronger then many thought at the plate as the likes of Albert Pujols and Stan Musial are heating up. Still few expected power numbers from Tim McCarver. McCarver went 5-5 against the Dodgers and drove in 5 runs. The cather is batting .423 on the season and is making a statement that he was the right choise as the Cardinal backstop. Both the Cardinals and the Dodgers are 5-3 follwing this result. ![]() ![]() At Shea Stadium Washington...........7 NY Mets...............5 WP: Steve Rogers (1-1) LP: Al Leiter (0-2) HR: Dave Kingman 2 (2), Tim Raines (1), Joe Cronin (2) A back and forth game in the big apple but the Nats come away winners. Seventeen Inning Battle At Busch A day after the Red Birds buried the Dodgers, Sandy Koufax took the ball against Bob Gibson and neither man wanted to give up the game or the momentum in the four game series. The game would be one for the books as it lasted five hours and the two aces threw over 300 pitches and struck out 20 men. In the end however neither man was on the mound when the game was decided by a Pee Wee Reese home run. Reese isnt known for getting the big home run but is known for coming through when his team needs him the most. "This is the kind of game that keeps your team going over the long haul of the season." said Reese, "no one wants to fight for 17 innings and lose." ![]() ![]() At Royal Stadium Milwuakee..........4 Kansas City........6 WP: Brett Saberhagen (1-1) LP: Don Sutton (0-3) S: Joakim Soria (2) A four run seventh inning turned this game around as Hal McRae cleared the bases with a double and Don Sutton now has lost all three of his starts. THE BABE'S FIRST BIG HIT Babe Ruth ended his first week of the season with the biggest hit of his young season as the Bambino helped the Yankees avoid another loss and try to keep pace as the Baltimore Orioles have set the early pace in the American League West. Week In Review ORIOLES STORY OF OPENING WEEK The Baltimore Orioles were no fancied by many to compete in the Amercian League East of the Cooperstown Baseball League. After ten games however it is the Orioles with the best record in baseball and an early significant lead over the likes of the Yankees and the Red Sox. The Orioles are 9-1 and swept the Yankees at Yankee Stadium to stun the league. George Sisler is batting .390 and Frank Robinson has hit three home runs. Earl Weaver coiuldnt be happier about his balanced roster and it will be thrilling to see just how far this teams can go. DAVID ORTIZ AMONG OTHERS GET REPLACED With a league so competetive changes among these rosters have already started to come in. The first current casualty is David Ortiz who has only one hit in 32 times at the plate. Ortiz cant seem to figuire things out and will be replaced in the Boston lineup. Mo Vaughn will get his chance in the DH position as the Red Sox look for a spark after their 5-5 start. Dutch Leonard will also replace Luis Tiant in the rotation currently. In Cincinnati Jose Rijo will take his 9.00 ERA to the bench and on will come Mario Soto who has been waiting for his chance to take the mound and help the Reds who are 6-4 this season. In St. Louis Joaquin Andujar will get a chance to start as Bill Doak has lost his first two starts and has just been battered around the yard. Andujar throws hard and will be intersting to watch. PLAYER AWARDS American League Ken Griffey Jr - Seattle Mariners Junior has helped the Mariners to four wins in their first 10 games and has doen so with five home runs in those games. Junior is batting .423 and is a big part to why the Mariners lead the league in home runs. Even in the Cooperstown league Junior may have the prettiest swing in the game. National League Johnny Mize - St. Louis Cardinals Everyone thought that the player of the week would come from St. Louis but not everyone expected it to be Johnny Mize. The Big cat beat out Albert Pujols for the award with 12 RBI and a .438 average. Anyway you look at it however the Cardinals have been pounding the baseball in the first 10 games of the season. LEAGUE LEADERS

COOPERSTOWN TONIGHT
Sunday April 18 BOSTON RALLY FOR DRAMATIC WIN Fred McGriff hammered a grand slam in the top of the 9th inning at Fenway Park to spoil a late Red Sox lead. Pedro Martinez made a mistake and it appeared that the Sox were destined to go down in this one down two runs with three outs to go. With two men on and one out the perfect man came up to the plate in Ted Williams. Dramatic Williams lined a double to right that scored two and tied the game. Williams is so good a clutch hitter that his confidence may have intimidated Jimmy Key on the mound. With two outs then Yastrzemski showed his class by driving a single to right that scored Williams, who had moved to third, and ending a very god game. "Ill take Yaz and Williams in the cluth each and everytime" said Red Sox manager Terry Francona after the win. The Red Sox have now won three games in their last at bat. COOPERSTOWN TONIGHT
Tuesday, April 20 Red Sox Do It Again For the second night in a row Jimmy Key just couldnt get it right and another classic Boston win was in the cards. Boston has been the story of much dramatics this season coming from behind to win time and time again including yesterday on a Carl Yazstzemski hit. On this night the stage was similar as the Red Sox entered the ninth inning down a run. Ted Williams once again drew a key walk as teams continue to not want anypart of the slugger who is sitting with a .366 average. Up came Jim Rice with one out and the Hall of Famer came through. Jimmy Key challanged the right hander and Rice lofted one over the Green Monster and the Red Sox won in walk off fashion once again. Key needed to keep the ball down and threw a pitch in the lower half but Rice lifted it and made a good swing. The Blue Jays wasted another strong performance from Fred McGriff who drove in three runs and has seven RBI in the last two games. COOPERSTOWN TONIGHT Thursday April 22 Tigers Set The Early Standard Ty Cobb had talked about it in the offseason as to how he expects this team to win and take second place from no one. The team plays in an AL Central division that many saw as wide open going into the year, and as the Month of April starts to come to a close, the Detroit Tigers have answered all the early calls. Detroit is first in the league in hitting with a .305 team average and is lead by Miguel Cabrera who is batting .400. The pitching staff is also off to a great start and sits second in league ERA at 3.30. Hal Newhouser (3-0) and Mickey Lolich (3-0) have yet to experiance a loss. Jim Leyland is getting praise for dealing with a group of very unique players, especially Cobb, but as long as the Tigers are winning the Georgia Peach should be fine. All that matters now is a sparkling 11-2 record and a 7-2 road record.

COOPERSTOWN TONIGHT Saturday April 24 Oglive and Schilling Get 8 Games The commisioner of the Cooperstown league came down hard on the Brewers and the Phillies after the teams had a bench clearing brawl in their game on Friday.
Ben Oglivie charged the mound and tackled Curt Schillng and it took several minutes to seperate the two players in a bench clearing mob the fans love but the league hates. The Brewers may be the most frustrated team in the league with their 2-13 record and are obviously in for a long season. Schilling had been pitching inside to the Brewers all game as has been his style, but the right hander is also in a bit of a funk looking for his first win of the season. The league has taken strong measures on player behavior as it recently also suspended Tim Wallach of the Nationals for four games after he bumped an umpire this week. Interestingly it is more of the modern day players that are causing issues rather then the older generation. "The league will take a stand and wont tolerate players who think they are above the game" said the league commisioner. ![]() ![]() At Wrigley Field San Francisco (8-7)............3 Chicago Cubs (12-3)............4 (13 inn) WP: Randy Myers (1-0) LP: Scott Garrelts (0-2) HR: Andre Dawson (2) Larry Doyle tied the game with two outs in the ninth off of Lee Smith but an error by Bil Terry allowed the winning run to score in the 13th. COOPERSTOWN TONIGHT Saturday April 24 Nettles Could Miss Entire Season The first major injury of the Cooperstown league came today out of New York as the Yankees will lose Craig Nettles for 4 to 5 months with a torn hip flexor. Nettles hurt his knee running the bases against the Tigers in their 13-7 win. If anyteam can weather an injury storm more then others it would of course be the Yanks who have depth at almost all positions, but still especially on the defensive side of things Nettles will really be missed. Red Rolfe will take over the starting everyday job at third for the Yankees and Robinson Cano was called up to the active roster for infield depth. WEEK IN REVIEW Cobb Proving To Be A Mentor To First Place Tigers The Detroit Tigers are sitting in first place in the AL Central with the best record in the American League at 12-4. The Tigers have started the first two weeks of the season hitting baseball very well and lead the Cooperstown league with a .315 average. The Tigers are best in almost every American League catagory including runs scored with 100. AL Team Batting 1. Detroit Tigers .315 2. NY Yankees .296 3. Oakland A's - .293 4. Boston Red Sox - .291 5. Baltimore Orioles - .283 In the middle of this hitting barrage is maybe one of the best hitters of them all in Ty Cobb. Cobb himself is batting .343 but that high number is only good enough for third on the team. Cobb has a reputation of not being a team player but his teamates say other wise as his influence and lessons at the plate have made a diffrence. Others are saying that Cobb is on a mission to beat the Yankees and will do anything and everything to get his teamates to play above expectations to make that happen. Miguel Cabrera is hitting everything in sight and leads the league with a .424 average after two weeks of play. Cabrera has five home runs and 14 RBI and seems in no mood to slow down. Lance Parrish is another example hitting .404 in the same time span, well above expectations while also hitting five home runs. "We do help eachother out" said Cabrera of his hot start, "to watch a hitter like Cobb obviously has been a great benefit. All the rumors about him being a bad teamate just are not true." The Tigers hold a three game lead in the division. ---------------------------------------------------------------------

COOPERSTOWN TONIGHT Monday April 26 Junior Red Hot, Mariners Not Ken Griffey Jr seems to be on a personal mission to show that he in fact is the best power man the game has ever seen. In the first month of the season Junior has hammered nine home runs behind his picture perfect swing and has especially of late been lighting it up. Junior has homered in four of his last five game. Griffey along with his big bat also plays a flawless centerfield, covering ground and robbing home runs. Griffey is also batting .303 on the year with 17 runs batted in. "He is excited to prove that he belongs among the best to ever play" says manager Lou Piniella of his star player. The Mariners as a team are now quite as impressive as they have lost their last two games and are on the verge of being swept out of Cleveland. Seattle is 7-10 but still only 2 games outside the top. Other then Randy Johnson, pitching has been an issue for the Mariners and some of their starters like Felix Hernandez (5.23) and Gaylord Perry (6.39). ![]() ![]() At Royals Stadium Atlanta (8-9).........1 KC Royals (11-6).....5 WP: Bret Saberhagen (4-1) LP: Greg Maddux (1-4) HR: Hal Mcrae (1) Greg Maddux strikes out 11 but loses still as Hal McRae drives in two along with Mike Sweeney in the win. COOPERSTOWN TONIGHT Tuesday April 27 Cleveland Rivival Stuns Seattle The Cleveland Indians started the Cooperstown League less then they way they wanted. The Indians were seven games under .500 heading into their three game series against the Seattle Mariners. A sweep was in the cards as the Indians did away with the Mariners in three straight games and did so in dramatic fashion, to bring some hope back to the club. With two outs in the 9th the Indians were down two runs with Felix Hernandez on the mound looking to close the game out. Albert Belle wouldnt be expected to see anything good to hit but with so many great hitters in this league, few players are really pitched around. Belle lofted a dramatic home run to tie the game, his third of the season, and Cleveland Stadium started to believe. Just an inning later Rocky Colavito singled in Nap Lajoie who had stolen his way on base and the Tribe had a walk off win. The heart shown by the team has manager Al Lopez believing his team is ready for better days. "Even though we had a terrible start, this team will have alot to say before the finish" said Lopez. The Indians now travel to Detroit to face Ty Cobb and the red hot Tigers ![]() ![]() At Royals Stadium Atlanta Braves (9-9)..........9 KC Royals (11-7).................5 (12 inn) WP: John Rocker (1-0) LP: Dan Quissenberry (0-2) HR: Andrew Jones (2) Dan Quissenberry gets rocked in the 12th inning as the Braves score five to win this game. COOPERSTOWN TONIGHT Wednesday April 28 Pirates Limp Into Season One of the oldest franchises in the game with a world of talent has come out of the gates with a stumble. The Pittsburgh Pirates lead by the likes of Honus Wagner and Roberto Clemente have not gotten much right in their 6-13 start. Even more so with the red hot Cubs having started so well at 16-3, the Bucks are already 10 games out of first place. The Mets beat the Pirates 8-1 at Chase Field and the Pirates are neither hitting or pitching the ball very well. Roberton Clemente is only batting .185 while Paul Waner is the only regular player over .300 at .303. Tony Pena the supposed starting catcher for the team is 1 for 22 at the plate this season; even Honus Wagner is batting an unimpressive .288. Pitchers like Kent Tekulve have been hammered out of the pen and the 4.88 team ERA isnt something to be proud of. Its still early of course, but the Pirates may already be walking the plank in the Cooperstown League. ![]() ![]() At Miller Park SF Giants (11-8)...........7 Milwaukee (4-15)...........1 WP: Juan Marichal (3-0) LP: Mike Caldwell (0-4) HR: Harry Danning (1), Barry Bonds (3) Bonds went deep and Juan Marichal struck out seven as the Giants cruised against the Brewers.
