Giants Keep Rolling; Reds Keep Losing

At Forbes Field
NY Giants..............12
Pittsburgh Pirates....8

Willie Mays 3-5 2 R BB (.291, 4, 16)

Mays had a big day at the plate as did many of the Giants against Pirate pitching. Mays had three hits, all singles, and looked cool on the bases even though he is still reluctant to steal.

At Crosley Field
Boston Braves..........6
Cincinnati Reds.........4

Ken Griffey Jr 0-1 K (.184, 1,, 7)

Junior pinch hits and strikes out against Bob Chipman as the Reds drop another lead and game late.

INDIANS PITCH AROUND MANTLE TO WIN

At Yankee Stadium
Cleveland Indians...........9
NY Yankees..................5

Joe DiMaggio 1-5 RBI (.325, 4, 15)

Mickey Mantle 1-2 2 RBI 1 R 2 BB (.269, 9, 22)

The Yankees lose again and Mantle's home run streak ends as the Indians decide to pitch around the kid. DiMaggio's average continues to come back to earth and the Yankees are sitting 3.5 games out of first place.

At Crosley Field
Boston Braves........2
Cincinnati Reds.......1

Ken Griffey Jr 0-1 K (.179, 1, 7)

Junior strikes out with two men on in the 8th in a big spot. He looked bad in the atbat and his confidence is very low at this point. At 20 years old this is a worry.

At Forbes Field
NY Giants................2
Pittsburgh Pirates......1

Willie Mays 0-4 K (.281, 4, 16)

Don Carlsen of the Pirates did well agains the young Mays but the Giants find a way t win again remaining in first place at 21-9.

**Duke Snider is still about 12 days away from coming back from his injury**

Cleveland Indians............5
NY Yankees...................6

Joe DiMaggio 0-4 (.315, 4, 15)

Mickey Mantle 2-4 HR 4 RBI R 2 K (.277, 10, 26)

Mantle hits another home run, this time a grand slam that carries the Yankees to victory. Mantle has taken over the spotlight from young DiMaggio as he is having a torrid month of May and leads baseball with 10 homers.

At Crosley Field
Boston Braves.............0
Cincinnati Reds............5

Ken Griffey Jr did not play

Junior sits on the bench as Ken Raffensberger pitches a shutout.

At Forbes Field
NY Giants...............3
Pittsburgh Pirates.....6

Willie Mays 0-4 (.271, 4, 16)

Mays is having a tough time in Forbes field now going hitless for the series and in a minor slump.

ROOKIES GO HITLESS

At Yankee Stadium
Chicago White Sox............7
NY Yankees.....................0

Joe DiMaggio 0-4 (.305, 4, 15)

Mickey Mantle 0-4 (.267, 10, 26)

Billy Pierce handcuffs the Yankees and their top rookies. The White Sox remain in first place and many are beginning to worry about the Yankees and their chances.

At Crosley Field
New York Giants..........6
Cincinnati Reds............4

Willie Mays 0-3 BB R K (.264, 4, 16)

Ken Griffey Jr 0-1 R (.175, 1, 7)

The Giants rally with four in the ninth to beat the Reds. Mays continues to be a bit inconsistent at the plate. Junior scores a run but cant buy a hit.

MICK LANDS ON DL

At Yankee Stadium
Chicago White Sox..............8
NY Yankees.......................4

Joe DiMaggio 0-4 K (.296, 4, 15)

Mickey Mantle 0-0
INJURED

The Yankees lose again but the big loss is that of Mikey Mantle. It is being reported that Mantle has biceps tendinitis and will miss 6 weeks of action. In the meantime DiMaggio continues to struggle as the league pitching may have caught up to him and his average drops below .300.

At Crosley Field
NY Giants.................5
Cincinnati Reds..........3 (11 inn)

Willie Mays 1-5 HR RBI R 2 K (.262, 5, 17)

Ken Griffey Jr 1-2 K (.190, 1, 7)

Mays hits a home run in the seventh to tie the game as the Giants prevail. Junior fight to get every at bat he can.

Good to have a Mick backer.

Mantle was on a tear leading the league with 10 homers in his rookie year but got injured and will miss 6 weeks.

Typical on Mantle, injuries always hurting his career.

Your selection for the top 5 center fielders are pretty good. According to Bill James' list of the top 100 center fielders in his "New Baseball Abstract" (dated 2001), he had Duke Snider at #6 and Ken Griffey Jr, who was still active, at #7. His top 5 were: (#1) Willie Mays, (#2) Ty Cobb, (#3) Mickey Mantle, (#4) Tris Speaker, and (#5) Joe DiMaggio.

I'm going with the "Say Hey Kid".

If interested, I can PM you with his top 10 at the other positions for your enjoyment or future reference.

Yeah that would be great. Speaker and Cobb are interesting options that I have toyed with adding. I am more prone to skip Cobb because in my estimation he was so much better then the rest and I wasnt a big fan of him as most wernt. Still i may add Speaker for next year for some excitement.

Thanks again

I have to say I am sad to see the "Mick" be injured. Although I am rooting for Griffey Jr, it is hard to get back in such a groove after being injured. This is really great. Keep it going!

Can you post screen shots of the player ratings? Curious to see how they develop over time.

Joe DiMaggio 3-5 2 2B 3 R 2 RBI (.310, 4, 20)

A hot Griffey sits out again.

Yea its typical of the Mick to fight injuries and we have seen it already. Joe D just stays steady and the Mick is either a legend or a disaster, funny how so far OOTP has these guys pegged well.

Junior just cant get a break with the Reds so far but its still early.

At Shibe Park
NY Giants...................6
Philadelphia Phillies.......2

Willie Mays 0-4 (.253, 5, 20)

Mays had a very hard rtime against Robin Roberts and went hitless but the first place Giants continue to win especially behind Monte Irvin (.340, 8, 33).

At Yankee Stadium
Philadelphia A's................2
NY Yankees....................3

Joe DiMaggio 1-3 2 RBI (.311, 4, 22)

The rookie legend of DiMaggio continues as he drives in the big runs in this game with a two out two run single that was the diffrence in the game. DiMaggio is already a star.

At Sportsman's Park
Cincinnati Reds................4
St. Louis Cardinals............3

Ken Griffey Jr 0-0 BB (.204, 2, 9)

A pinch hit appearance for Junior leads to a walk in the 8th.

At Yankee Stadium
Philadelphia A's...............14
NY Yankees.....................6

Joe DiMaggio 2-5 HR 2B 2 RBI R (.313, 5, 24)

DiMaggio isnt the problem in New York but the pitching staff is as the A's put together a 9 run inning and embarrass the Yankees. DiMaggio did hit his fifth long ball of the year and continues to mature quickly.

At Shibe Park
NY Giants................8
Philadelphia Phllies.....3

Willie Mays 1-4 HR 3 RBI R BB (.253, 6, 23)

Willie smacks a three run home run as part of a six run ninth inning and the Giants take another game and are on another winning streak of 8 games. The Giants lead the National League by 5.5 games.

At Sportsman's Park
Cincinnati Reds............5
St. Louis Cardianals......8

Ken Griffey Jr did not play

**Duke Snider and Mickey Mantle are both still on the DL**

At Yankee Stadium Game 1
Philadelphia A's...........0
NY Yankees...............3

Joe DiMaggio 2-4 2B 2 R (.318, 5, 24)

Joe picks up two hits and Tom Morgan throws a complete game shutout in the first game of the double header.

At Yankee Stadium Game 2
Philadelphia A's................3
NY Yankees....................6

Joe DiMaggio 1-5 RBI R (.314, 5, 25)

Joe keeps a modest 9 game hitting streak alive as the Yanks come up big on this Sunday to sweep the double header.

At Shibe Park
NY Giants..................3
Philadelphia Philies......5 (11 inn)

Willie Mays 0-5 (.245, 6, 23)

Mays has nothing against Russ Meyer and the rookie seems to be hitting a wall here as his average is as low as its been all season.

At Sportsman's Park
Cincinnati Reds...........7
St. Louis Cardinals.......3

Ken Griffey Jr did not play

The Reds get 17 hits in their win and Junior isnt a part of any of it.
