April 8 Pettite And Yanks Take 3 From Sox The Yankees fully recovered from their opening day loss and continued to imporve as they sent the White Sox out of town having beaten them three out of four games.
Babe Ruth hit his third home run in four games and is now batting .500 in his first four games. It appears that Ruth is liking his role as designated hitter where McCarthy has played him so far. Along with Ruth, Derek Jeter hit a two run home run and Lou Gehrig drove in his first two runs of the season. Andy Pettite proved his claim to a starting spot in the rotation holding the White Sox to only one first inning run while striking out seven in 9 innings worked. The Yankees eased to their 8-1 win and now head to Canada to take on the Blue Jays. Candeleria Shuts Out Cubs John Candeleria helped the Pirates take three out of four from the Cubs at Wrigley Field in a 4-0 shutout. Candeleria struck out seven and did some nice tap dancing to get out of jams and hold off the Cubs. Bill Mazeroski and Ralph Kiner both went yard off Kerry Wood on what turned out to be a chilly day under 40 degrees. The Pirates looked poised to make waves in the NL Central where the Cardinals have alreayd gotten off to a rough start. The Cubs and Leo Durocher canrt be happy with the way they started the Cooperstown season especially with the bats. Sosa, Banks, and Sandberg have yet to drive in a run this season. Padres Get Back at Giants The Giants may have been a bit hung over after their thrilling win over the Padres in the 9th inning last night. The Padres did it clearly this time beating the Giants 11-1 and salvaging the last game of the series. Pedro Astacio pitched 9 innings and only allowed three hits and one run against the mighty Giant lineup. Dante Bichette drove in three runs as did flashy short stop Troy Tulowitski. The Giants welcome the struggling Diamond Backs to AT&T Park. Other scores Braves 4 Astros 5 Lance Berkman hits the key homerun in the 8th inning to break a 4-4 tie. Chipper Jones had brought the Braves back and drove in three runs but it wasnt enough. Rangers 1 Brewers 2 Pete Vukovich and Bobby Witt had a good pitching duel but a Gorman Thomas single was the diffrence in this win. Orioles 1 Indians 5 Even with Manny Ramirez batting only .091 the Indians did get a win and Rocky Colavito hit a long home run and drove in three. Tigers 7 Royals 4 The big blow was a three run home run by Kirk Gibson that proved to be the diffrence for the Tigers who win for the first time. Ty Cobb is batting only .250 thus far. Twins 8 Diamondbacks 1 Kirby Puckett went 4-5 and is batting .600 this season while Kent Hrbek drove in four runs and slammed a three home runs in the 9th. The Diamondbacks continue to struggle. Blue Jays 4 Mariners 2 ARod hit his third home run of the season but this game went to the Blue Jays and Dave Stieb. Stieb struck out 9 and Fred McGriff hit a two run home run in the win. A's 1 Angels 4 The Angels are a thorn in the side of Oakland as they take another game and get a good performance out of Andy Messersmith. Troy Glaus and Tim Salmon hit solo shots. |

Friday April 9 Jack The Ripper Saves Padres Coming off of a very good series against the Brooklyn Dodgers the San Diego Padres returned home to a full house to take on the Washington Nationals. Dave Drevecky got the call to try and win the home opener and keep the early season momentum going. Bill Spaceman Lee took the mound for the Nationals. Leading 2-0 in the 6th inning the two hottest Nationals hitters came through as Marquis Grissom and Rusty Staub contributed in a three run inning to put the Nats up. Benito Santiago cut the lead to one in the bottom of the inning but the Natiinals did their best to close things out. Felipe Alou decided not to go to his bullpen and John Wettlend but rather let Bill Lee close things out. In the 9th Adrian Gonzalez singled and up came Jack Clark representing the winning run. With the bullpen finally warming Clark took the count full and knew that Lee didnt want to move the tying run along so he challanged Jack. Clark ripped a fastball that got out of the yard in a hurry and gave the Padres another big win. The Padres are now 3-1 and are riding a wave of enthusiasm following this late inning win at home. Bruce Bochey has this team believing in itself. Giants Find A Way again In another dramatic finish on the coast the San Francisco Giants continue to turn it on when they need to and win baseball games. Trailing 4-0 in the 7th against the Diamondback Willie Mays lifted his first home run of the season to cut the lead but the Snakes still had a one run lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. Byung Kim was on the mound and walked the first man before Matt Mantei came one and walked two more to load the bases with one out. Mel Ott then singled to right and Roger Breshnahan beat the throw to the plate as the Giants won in their final atbat for the second straight game. Arizona drops to 0-4. Higuera stays hot as Brewers win again Brewers starter Teddy Higuera became the first pitcher to win two games this season as he handcuffed the Kansas City Royals in a 4-1 win. Teddy struck out 12 Royals which is a high so far this season and looks to be taking on the role of team ace for the Brewers very well. Paul Molitor also went 4-5 in the win including hitting his first home run of the season, Milwaukee is 4-1 already on the young season and are looking confident going forward. "Getting off to a good start is a big key for us" says team leader Robin Yount. Other games

Saturday, April 10 Konerko Blasts Mariners A difficult start for the White Sox coming out of New York and then losing their season opener. The team needed a spark as they headed into their Saturday showdown against Randy Johnson.
Seattle made things tough getting three in the second inning off Doc White thanks to a bases loaded double by Edgar Martinez. Harold Baines helped the Sox get back with a two run home run in the 4th to tie the game. The Sox took the lead into the eigth before Alvin Davis tied it late with a double. The game rolled into the ninth and again the worry on the faces of the Sox fans was evident that they would let another slip away. Johnson stayed on the mound and with two outs and man on first up came Paul Konerko. A picture perfect swing and Paulie caught up with a fastball sending over the wall and giving the Sox a crucial win. "You could hear the sigh of relief through the ballpark" said manager Tony LaRussa. Halladay Controls Yanks Roy Halladay controlled the Yankees and proved that it can indeed be done. Halladay held the Bronx Bombers to only four hits and Joe Carter came through with the crucial home run to give the Jays support. Babe Ruth did hit his fifth home run of the season and his fourth consecutive game hitting a long ball. Ruth remains in a major groove at the plate but on this day he was alone as the Yankees were formally introduced to a division rival and Roy Halladay. "We will be back to see him again" said Mcikey Mantle Red Sox Get First Win In Dramatic Ninth The Boston Red Sox were being shutout by Frank Tanana and the Los Angeles Angels in California. Tanana took the game to the ninth inning and looked in command before he loaded the bases and faced Wade Boggs. Boggs singled in the first run while Rich Gedman came through with a clutch sacrafice fly that tied the game. With two outs then Johnny Pesky came to the plate and fought at the plate. He then pushed a two out single ton right scoring the go ahead run. Without any hesitation Cy Young took the ball in the ninth and who else but Young delivered the first Red Sox win of the season. ![]() ![]() |

Sunday April 11 Royal Sunday Walkoff The Kansas City Royals and the Milwaukee Brewers played a game for all seasons on Sunday at Kaufmann Stadium. Leading 11-6 going into the bottom of the 9th the Brewers turned to Rollie Fingers in hopes of closing things out.
The Royals had an inning for the ages. Danny Tartabull hammered a two run home run to open the inning and knock Brewers starter Moose Haas out of the game. Fingers came on and did his thing getting the first two men he faced out. Hal McRae then came up and along with George Brett after him worked the count patiently until they got a pitch to hit and got on base. At this point the game turned silly; leading by three runs and facing Carlos Beltran two pitches later the Brewers would be losers. Beltran belted the first pitch he saw for a three run home run to tie the game and then John Mayberry hit the first pitch he saw for the walk off game winner. A six run 9th inning and the Brewers wondered what happened. One of many late inning comebacks we have seen in the first week of the Cooperstown League. Walk Off Night For Twins As Well Kirby Puckett got into the fun of the weekend with a walk off winning single as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Cincinnati Reds 5-4. Red hot Vida Pinson had tied the game for the Reds in the seventh inning and the Jim Maloney tried to keep his team in the game. Eddie Guardado came on in relief for the home team and held the Red Machine down before the ninth before a Heine Manush singled set the stage for Puckett. Puckett is batting .464 so far this season and is primed for a very big year. Marichel Leaves DiamondBacks Winless Things are just not getting better or easier for the Arizona Diamondbacks who dropped another game and the weekend series to the Giants to start their season 0-6. Juan Marichal took the mound for the Giants with confidence and pitched a ful nine innings of shutout ball in the 4-0 win at AT&T Park. Will Clark had his hot bat continue to sizzle and banged two home runs off Brandon Webb in this one. Clark is batting .444 this season and has more then earned his temporary starting job over Willie McCovey. The Giants are 5-1 in their first week of play. ![]() ![]() |

Game of the Day ![]() ![]() Chicago Cubs (2-6) at Brooklyn Dodgers (4-3)
WP: Don Drysdale (1-1) LP: Kerry Wood (0-2) HR: R. Campanella (1), Reggie Smith (3) Ebbetts Field - The Dodgers got to Cubs starter Kerry Wood in the 5th inning of this Monday matchup between the two National League sides. Reggie Smith and then Roy Campenella both went deep in the inning as the Wood fastball lacked the location it had had in the previous 4 innings. The Dodgers added four more runs in the 6th inning to put the game on ice behind starter Don Drysdale who pitched very well after a turbulent first inning. Campy drove in four runs on the day and the Dodgers are starting to play good baseball again. As for the Cubs the start has been very disapointing for Leo Durocher and his men, Sammy Sosa is only batting .185 without a home run yet and Ryne Sandberg is sitting at .214. Game of the Day ![]() ![]() New York Yankees (6-3) at Milwaukee Brewers (5-4)
WP: Teddy Higuera (3-0) LP: Whitey Ford (1-2) Home Runs: Cecil Cooper (2) Miller Park - a game that will be remembered for a logn time in Milwaukee between the mighty Yankees and the Brewers. White Ford is the most unlucky man in baseball as he didnt allow a hit in over 10 innings but still came up the loser. Ford and Brewer starter Teddy Higuera matched eachother pitch for pitch in this and it was difficult to decifer who was better. Higuera did it against the most dangerous lineup in the Cooperstown league holding them to only two hits and going the full eleven innings. "We just couldnt get solid contact on him" said Derek Jeter who got one of the two Yankee hits. Ford on the other hand was evev better. Ford kept the Brewers at bay and did not allow a hit but waited for his offense to give hime something; anything. Ford couldnt beleive his luck as he entered the 11th inning still with a no hitter but not a winner. Tired and frustrated Ford did have trouble with his control all afternoon. In the 11th Ford walked Paul Molitor and with two men on and two out John McGraw decided to go to the bullpen and Mariano Rivera. Cecil Cooper came to the plate and on the second pitch he saw from Rivera blasted the ball 435 feet to right center and over the wall. The only hit of the game for the Brewers and it was the most dramatic anyone could have imagined. "This was an incredibe game" said Cooper after he was mobbed upon beating the mighty Yankees, "I know its only one game in April but we feel like we did something enormous today." This is what the Cooperstown Leage is all about. Around the league today Hrbek stays on a tear Kent Hrbek of the Minnesota Twins remains a suprize as one of the hottest hitters in the league. Hrbek went 4-4 against the Astros today hitting two home runs and driving in six runs. The big Twins first baseman is batting .412 with 3 home runs and a league leading 15 RBI. Hrbek isnt exactly a household name but has shown his ability to get the big hits and help his team get off to the best start in baseball at 7-1. Cansesco Slam Carries A's Jose Cansesco hit a long grand slam in the bottom of the 11th against Jonathan Papelbon to carry the Athletics ove the struggling Red Sox. Lefty Grove and Roger Clemens had a good pitching duel and the game stayed tense to the final atbat. Ted Williams had hit his second home run of the season to tie the game but it was Cansesco who made his first home run this year a special one. The Red Sox are 1-4 on the young season. Trouble in Chicago The Chicago White Sox heard the boo's at Comiksey Park tonight as the Kansas City Royals came into town and dismantled them. The Royals slammed 18 hits and won 15-1 against Ed Walsh and the Sox. The White Sox and Tony LaRussa are 2-7 and many are wondering if the Sox are buying into the skipper's mentality. George Brett drove in 5 runs and went 3-5, Brett is batting .344 on the young season. The Royals are 6-2 thus far and have opened some eyes. Dennis Leonard got his first start and first win of the season. Other scores Angles...............6 Rangers.............2 Indians.............4 Mariners...........3 Blue Jays...........0 Tigers...............5 Cubs................4 Dodgers............8 |

April 15, 2010 San Diego Outlasts Reds In 13 ![]() ![]() (5-3) (5-3)
WP: S. Linebrink (1-0) LP: R. Dibble (0-1) Riverfront Stadium - Mario Soto was determined to finish things off for the Reds in another epic pitching duel between the Dominican pitcher and Dave Drevecky. Both pitchers pitched perfect shutouts as the game went into the 11th inning scoreless.
In the 11th Gary Templeton doubled into the gap scoring two runs and looking as if the Reds had blown the quality start by Soto. On a number of occasions Soto fought off Sparkey Anderson who wanted to relieve him. In the bottom of the frame with Trevor Hoffman on thr mound the Reds came back to everyone's suprize. With two out and the tying runs on Eric Davos hit a grounder to Bip Roberts at third and the infielder let the ball go stright through his legs and bound into the corner scoring the tying two runs. With the game tied Mario Soto finally was pulled in the 13th inning having pitched 154 balls! Rob Dibble came on and in the 14th a Dave Winfield double turned into a run as Jack Clark got him home on a sac fly. Scott Linebrink closed out the ninth as no other Reds comback could be mustered. Royals fan following along. Sabes looks like he is off to a sick start.
Just wondering why Gura (who is solid) and not Cone? Don't count out Royal blue, looks like they have a great mix of power and speed in the lineup. |

Sunday April 18 Cooperstown Tonight Rocky Mountain High For Gwynn The San Diego Padres continue to impress in the Cooperstown Baseball League and their Sunday effort against the Colorado Rockies was proof of this. The Padres took full advantage of Coors Field and battered the baseball in a 19 hit 16-5 win over the Rockies.
Denny Neagle had nothing for the home side who are having an impossible time finding any kind of pitching. Tony Gwynn ent 4-6 and drove in five runs, all his hits were singled with men on as Gwynn has now upped his average to .433. In the effort Brian Giles drove in three runs and Cito Gaston hit a grand slam in the big win. The Padres are 8-3 and one game back to everyone's suprise in the NL West. Halladay Tosses Two Hitter Toronto ace Roy Halladay earned his third win of the season with a great performance at Camden Yards. Halladay allowed only two hits and went the distance in the easy 11-1 Blue Jays win. Halladay struck out eight Orioles and Baltimore has a good offense with such stars as Willie Keeler and Frank Robinson. The Jays hit three home runs with Carlos DelGado driving in three. Ed Walsh Tries to Revive White Sox A nightmare month just got a tiny bit better for the White Sox as they defeated the Texas Rangers at Rangers ballpark 2-0. The Sox won only their third game of the season and Tony LaRussa has felt the heat of the recent past. Ed Walsh had it all going in this one beating Charlie Hough and not walking a single man. Walsh had struggled this season up to this point and even with this shutout his ERA is still over 5.00. Monday April 19 Cooperstown Tonight Red Sox With Memorable Comeback At Fenway In 9th Fenway Park - Concerns about a lackluster start by the Boston Red Sox were swirling around Fenway Park before the game on Monday against CC Sabathia and the Cleveland Indians. The Red Sox were 4-5 coming into the game and the Sox wanted to extend a two game winning streak. Sabathia and the Indians had other ideas as the visitors broke out to a 7-3 lead as Al Rosen and Albert Belle both homered off of Boston starter Cy Young. Young especially has had a rough go of it to start the season and allowed seven earned runs again tonight to push his ERA over 4.00. The Sox came into the 9th down four runs and Sabathia looked confident on the mound until with one out Nap Lajoie made an error to open the door. Rich Gedman and Nomar Garciaparra followed with singles to score a run but Bobby Doerr struck out to commit the second out. Ted Williams came up as the tying run and Sabathia was careful with him putting him on to load the bases for Tris Speaker. The noise at Fenway kept elevating and Speaker singled to left scoring another run and the lead was down to two. Big Papi David Ortiz then came up and everyone knows what a history he has a clutch hitting. Ortiz doubled down the first base line past a diving Jim Thome and the ball clattered into the corner. The relay throws came but it was Speaker with a perfect slide and score to beat the play and end the game. The Red Sox have won three in a row and have taken three of four from the Indians. Here they come. Monumental Pitching Due Goes to Johnson Fans can only dream of a pitching matchup between Walter Johnson and Christy Matthewson, but that was exactly the scenatio at Nationals Park in Washington DC tonight. The pitchers lived up to their reputation and runs were extremely hard to come by. In fact the only big hit of the night came from an unlikely source as Hubie Brooks broke the deadlock in the third inning. With two down Brooks anticipated the Mathewson fast ball and drove it out of the park with two men on. Johnson then took things from there, going the distance for the win and the shutout. Johnson allowed only four hits on the night and goes 2-2 on the season. Gooden and Gibson look sharp Two pitchers and teams that needed it more then anything recieved good pitching performances on Monday and let their teams to wins. Dwight Gooden went 9 innings allowing only one run and striking out nine in a 2-1 win over the struggling Phillies. Gooden 2-1 on the season. Bob Gibson gave some relief to the Cardinals with a complete game performance. The hard throwing right hander struck out nine nine in an 8-2 victory over the Houston Astros.

Tuesday April 20 Cooperstown Tonight Sisler Walk Off Beats A's Camden Yards - The Baltimore Orioles are involved in an ALL team race right now in the AL East as all teams are within one game of eachtother. On Tusday night in Baltimore George Sisler hit his first home run of the season at the right time as the Orioles beat the Athletics 5-4 in the tenth.
It was an emotional night as Reggie Jackson and manager Connie Mack were ejected from this game when in the 5th inning a close call at first base was made for the third out, a play that would have scored a run. The A's with the loss drop to one game under .500 and are having their own concerns as the favorites in the AL West. Kenny Williams doubled twice in the game and Brian Roberts hit his second home run of the season. Dave McNally struck out 10 men in the win. Hershiser Carries Brooklyn Orel Hershiser gave his team the performance it needed as the Dodgers bested the San Diego Padres and Kevin Brown at Ebbets Field. Hershiser was matched pitch for pitch in a duel but had his best stuff and struck out 11 men. The Padres were missing Tony Gwynn who was out of the lineup with back stiffness. Pedro Guerrero homered in the 6th inning, a shot that proved to be the diffrence in the game. The Dodgers cut a game off the Padres who are still a game ahead of them in the NL West standings. Big Unit and Mariners Frustrate Yanks Randy Johnson pitched a complete game and the Seattle Mariners stunned the New York Yankees at Yankee stadium 4-2. Ichiro Suzuki drove in two runs of his own and the runs were enough to overcome for the win. The Yankees are only 8-7 on the season and have lost two in a row. Concern and pressure is a big deal now in the Bronx as great things are expected and nothing less from this team.

Wednesday April 21 Cooperstown Tonight EL TIANTE FLASHES BEST STUFF Fenway Park - Luis Tiant is the type of pitcher that when he gets it going he becomes even more impossible to hit. As belief in Boston rises that the Red Sox can challange the Yankees, Tiant put on a enjoyable display of emotion and flair as he two hit the Brewers in a shutout at Fenway Park. Tiant struck out nine and walked none, the Brewers barely made good contact the entire evening against the Cuban star. Wade Boggs had two hits and drove in a run as the Red Sox themsevles had 12 hits against Ben Sheets and up their record at 7-5. Mantle Powers Yankees With Amazing Shot Even Babe Ruth had to be impressed as Mickey Mantle put on a display of power at Yankee Stadium that had everyone talking. The Yankees scored five runs in the very first inning and were all over Jaimie Moyer and the Mariners. In the first frame Mantle hit an amazing home run that almost left Yankee Stadium, Mantle hit a shot to left field that was estimated at 531 feet. Even with so many stars in the Cooperstown league no one could hit the ball like the Mick. Mantle did it again in the second inning to left but the shot was about 150 feet less far. Lou Gehrig also finally hit his first home run of the season as the Yankees batted 14 hits and are trying to get hot as their record sits at an unimopressive 9-7. Misery In Chicago Both Chicago teams are falling out of the races faster then a Mantle home run leaves the park. Up to this point the White Sox and the Cubs are both in last place in their division's and have a combined record of 7-24. The Cubs have a 5.09 ERA and the Sox are even worse with an incredible ERA of 7-23. Mark Buerhle is 0-3 and has allowed 23 runs in 20 innings of work. The Sox right now are just lacking in confidence and cant seem to get anyone out. As for the Cubs, Sammy Sosa has only hit one home run while Kerry Wood doesnt appear to be the answer in the rotation with a 7.22 ERA in four starts.

What an excellent idea!
I did something similar, but I just used each team's best players from '79 (when I started watching baseball actually having an idea of what was going on) through 2009. I'd have trouble finding the right roster for each team if I included players from all ages. So kudos to you for that. Not easy at all. Needless to say, I'll be following this dynasty with eager interest. I'm just curious as to why you didn't include Jason Kendall with the Pirates? IMO, he was just as good as Tony Peña. Well, please keep this up! |

Thursday April 22 Cooperstown Tonight Killebrew And Twins Continue To Impress Harmen Killebrew is just one cog in what has become a very strong lineup for the Minnesota Twins. The Twins have suprised most of baseball with their impressive start to the Cooperstown season. The Twins lead by Tom Kelly are 12-3 with the best record in the game and there seems to be no end in sight.
"We feel like we can play with anybody" says Kirby Puckett who is batting .313 for the season. Puckett is one of many stars that has the team batting .326, tops in the entire league. On Thursday the Twins won again beating the Washington Nationals in DC by a score of 7-5. Killebrew went deep twice in the game off of Bill Lee. The slugger is now first in the major leagues with seven homeruns, ahead of such sluggers as Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle. Kent Hrbeck is surely on his way to being player of the month as he leads the league in batting (.439) and RBI (19). Tremendous Inning for Astros The Houston Astros went into the 9th inning against the Cincinnati Reds down three runs and decided to bust out their bats. In fact the Astros had the biggest inning we have seen so far as they scored 10 runs in the 9th inning to carry them to a 12-5 win at Great American BallPark. Rob Dibble just got killed out of the pen allowing six runs and losing the game for Dolph Luque who had pitched well. Houston got 10 hits on their 10 runs with Ken Caminiti driving in three runs and Jose Cruz another two. Houston gain a game on the Reds and have an even 8-8 record to start the season, a better record than many expected. Blue Jays Murder Tigers At Sky Dome the Toronot Blue Jays imporved their record to 9-7 to stay in the NL East race after they demolished the Detroit Tigers by a score of 15-1. Lloyd Moseby went 2-3 with two home runs and four runs scored. Moseby was part of a Toronto attack that left Denny McLain wondering if he could get anyone out. The Blue Jays in all ended up hitting five home runs and capped the game with an 8 run eigth inning. Al Leiter on the other end was at the tiop of his game as the lefty won his first game of the season going the distance and allowing only five hits, two of them to Ty Cobb. Cobb has been among many who are frustrated with the Tigers start to the season as they sit on a 7-8 record, five games behind the first place Twins.
