White's Draft Another Arm, Fight To Stay In Race
The Chicago White Stockings stayed as close as they could to the Boston Red Stockings who are off to the best start in baseball history at 23-6. The Whites were only 4 games back when they traveleled to Boston and unfortunately dropped two in a row to the Red Stcokings and ended the month back 6 games with a 17-12 record.

In the meantime the anticipated June draft came and Chicago had the 3rd pick overall. The White Stockings chose J ONeil the 21 year old pitcher who all the scouts say has the potential to be a real star. ONeil along with Hugh Campbell may provide the groundwork for a dominant pitching core in the years to come. ONeil made his major league debut with a baptism by fire against Boston, Oneil took the loss and learned the hard way that big league hitting is a whole new level.

There were some eyebrows as the Whites passed on highly popular center fielder Charley "Baby" Jones who has been putting on hitting displays in his home town.

The oft injured Steve King went down again after injuring his knee and will be out for 5 weeks.

"We still have a long season ahead of us" added Fergy Malone who leading the team with 19 RBI.

League Tidbits
  • League scouts and fans are asking themselves what happened to last season's outstanding player Cal McVey? The catcher who hit .414 last seaon is batting .237, a drop of 177 points! McVey is contributing to the horrible 5-24 record that they sport.
  • Chick Fulmer fractured his foot and adds to the Reds misery while missing 3 weeks.
  • The Philadelphia Athletics are suffering through their most disapointing season sitting at 11-18 and 6 games back. Age may be catching up to this team.

Superstars in Boston Making for Historic Seaosn
The Boston Red Stockings are putting together the best season of baseball that anyone has seen before. The Red Stockings have compiled a 29-9 and already a 10 game lead in the National League.

Two stars have led the way with incredible seasons, in fact it is the battery of Boston in catcher Deacon White and pitcher Cy Bentley.

Deacon White

White has lit up the league thus far. The catcher is a legitamite triple crown candidate as he is leading the league in hitting (.429), on base (.461), VORP (25.9), Hits (73), RBI (36), and total bases (85). To top it all off White has captured the attention of the league with a 30 game hitting streak that was still active as of this printing. The streak broke previous record held by Levi Meyerle in 1872. The 1872 League MVP is almost a shoe in for getting his second such award.

On the mound Cy Bentley has a 27-8 record and some are already talking about 40 wins! Bentley is holding opposing batters to a .244 average and has a 2.23 ERA. Bentley won the outstanding pitcher award at the end of last season, and may be on his way to a repeat performance.

With these two stars behind them and much more, the Red Stockings are firmly set to become world champions once again and set records this game has never seen in the process.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHITE STOCKINGS HAVE 1-9 MONTH

With Boston so hot the Whites could not afford a poor month, unfortunately the team had one of its worst months ever finishing July at 1-9. Hugh Campbell just fell off the table in the month going 0-4 with an ERA of 7.14. Chicago tried to cover with their other arms but wernt even close, losing to Boston 4 times and even more humiliating losing to Cincinnati 3 times.

Now the team will look to retool and give some younger players like J ONeil a chance to show their stuff.

Boston Set to Clinch; American League Race Even
The Boston Red Sox continue to stroll through the competition in the National League finishing the month of August 33-15 and 8 games up on the competition. The defending champions are set to make history already with the most wins in a season and the biggest margin of victory in a division.

Deacon White ended his incredible run and hitting streak at 36 straight games. White can now take a rest as he is hitting .404 and has conceded the lead in a few offensive catagories. "As a catcher I think he needs a break before the World Series", said the Boston manager, "We will look to do that for him in September."

In the American League things are much more tense and competitive as the St, Louis Browns and the Baltimore Canaries are tied atop the division. The Browns are the defending champions but the Canaries have been present all season long, led by the arm of Al Spalding they will be tough to beat down the stretch. Also still involved are the Cleveland Blues who are only three game out. St. Louis and Baltimore have 6 games left between them before the end of the season so all will be decided on the field.

In Chicago the local White Stockings had a better month going 6-4 and sitting with an even record of 24-24. Center fielder Count Sensenderfer was named the NL player of the month for his efforts, Count is batting .360 and is second in the league in stolen bases with 19.

Joe Quest of the Whites also recived honors for being the rookie of the month of August. The future is bringt for the kid.

  • Philadelphia starter and former pitcher of the year George Zetllein is having a tough time recovering and may be shelved for the season. The "Charmer" has an abdominal strain and is having trouble throwing from a motion.
  • Charley Jones, the player Chicago passed on in this years draft, is off to an impressive start for the Athletics. The young man is batting .304 with 12 RBI.
  • Chick Fulmer is one of the few bright spots for the Reds this season. The shortstop went 5-5 against the Red Stockings earlier this month, one of the few players in history to pull the feat.

Repeat in Series; Boston vs St. Louis

A repeat of last season's championship will be replayed as the St. Louis Browns go out for revenge against the team they lost out to last season, the power house Boston Red Stockings.

Boston ended their season on an average note, slowing down from their frantic pace and finishing the season 5-7 but still with an overall record of 38-22. Boston rested some of its starters and insists that their late season slump has nothing to do with how they will play in the Championship. The experts tend to agree as Boston is the clear favorites to repeat going in.

For St. Louis no doubt getting there was half the fun. In a bitter season long battle with the Baltimore Canaries, the Browns just came out on top on the very last day of the season. Down by one game with 2 to play against the Canaries, the Browns won both remaing games both on the road to take the league pennant. A heart breaking choke for Baltimore that were so close but a 2 run Jack Remsen triple in the top of the ninth turned the game around as Baltimore were three outs away from taking it.

So can the Browns pull the trick against Boston?

League Tidbits
  • The Philadelphia Athletics for the second season in a row fired their manager after finishing last in the American League.
  • The Cleveland Blues fired their manager after the Blues faded out of the title race late in the season. Fans wondered if some of the late season decisions cost the team a chance at the pennant.
  • The Brooklyn Atlantics finished third in the National League with a winning record of 32-28. This still wasnt good enough for the Brooklyn front office and a change of manager was made.

Chicago Confident of Unseating Boston
It is a daunting task indeed that the Chicago White Stockings have before them as they break camp for the 1875 season, The Boston team cruised to the pennant last season and have a core strong enough that almost eveyone is picking them to get to the title again.

"We are confident in our abilities," says Cap Anson, "hopefully they celebrated a bit too much in the offseason."

In prep for te season the Whites did make a trade in the offseason. Chicago sent first baseman Jim Foran to Philadelphia for short stop Ham Allen. Foran was not fitting in at the club and was said to be a distraction on and off the field batting only .197 last season.

The pitching of the team is still a bit of puzzle, but Hugh Campbell is said to have the inside track to start the season with J Oneil competing for the job as well.

A good start could be key for the Whites.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
National League Team Snapshot

Boston Red Stockings
The two time defending world champions see no reason to slow down. Cy Bentley and Deacon White are two of the biggest stars in the game and are joined by a deep lineup with Ross Barnes and Clipper Flynn. No one expects Boston to slip up this season barring any injuries.

Brooklyn Atlantics
The Atlantics have alot to prove in the big city and so much still rides on the arm of Al Pratt. The Atlantics are still old school thinkers and believe that one strong arm is good enough for a good team, with a 60 game schedule that will be quite a challange. Davy Force the talented 3rd baseman is the big bat in the lineup. The Atlantics want to compete seriously for their first pennant but really need to stay strong and consistent to do so.

Cincinnati Reds
The Reds are looking to rebound from a nightmare of a season. After starting 2-18 the team recovered to play respectable balls the rest of the way, but good enough to compete? Most would say not. Levi Meyerle is still one of the most popular players in the game but the big question is if Cal McVey can respond to his 1873 form where he won the MVP award. The Reds have talent but would suprize alot of people if they wernt out of the race by July.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
League Tidbits
  • In the offseason a handful of players retired. The most notable name to end his career was Dickey Pearce the Boston short stop. Fred Waterman retired as well but the move was expected after his terrible injury last season.
  • The Philadelphia Athletics lost second baseman Wes Fisler for the entire upcoming season after the player broke his elbow in a fall during a preseason game. The "Icicle" batted .240 last season in 204 at bats.
  • The Baltimore Canaries changed their name to the Baltimore Orioles.

Baseball Mysterious MVP curse?
Many in the game of baseball are starting to wonder if winning the Most Valuable Player award is a good thing or a curse. For the second year in a row the reigning MVP is struggling to even come close to the level he was a season ago.

cursed?

Cal McVey of the Reds won the award in 1873 batting an incredibe .414. Mcvey came back last season and struggled greatly as his team fnished in last place. McVey was nowhere near himself and fininshed the season wiht a pedestrian .283 average. No injury was reported by the player for his slump.

As April comes to a close now the curse continues. Deacon White of the Red Stockings has gotten off the a terrible month. White who was among the leaders in most offensive catagories last season and batted .400, finished the month with an average of .243 and only 9 hits. White who is in his prime at 27 years old, has no explanation for the slump.

Witch doctors beware.

The White Stockings opened the season a disapointing 3-6 and its the lack of timely hitting that seems to be to blame. J Oneil went 0-5 for the month but had an ERA of only 2.02. Still the feeling is that the younster will work out of the bullpen for the near future.

"He just cant close out games right now" said the Whites manager.

  • Billy Greer the 22 year old Cincinnati center fielder unfortunately will be playing no more baseball. The young player tore the labrum in his shoulder and will hardly be able to raise a bat again. The sad news brings an end to a promising young career. Greer played in 92 games and was a career .239 hitter.
  • Andy Leonard went 5-5 in a game agaisnt the Brooklyn Atlantics this month. The Cincinnati outfielder is off to a fast start batting .342 on the young season.
  • Athletics hurler George Zettlein seems to be back to full force from his injury last season. The star pitcher threw a shutout against the Browns and has allowed only 10 earned runs in over 70 innings this season.

In Search For Arms In Chicago
The Chicago White Stockings seem to have had the same dilema since they started playing in the National League 4 years ago; where is the pitching?

Its not as if the Chicago pitching stats wise is a complete disaster, the issue seems to be that they have a number of servicable role pitchers and no ace to log the big innings as so many other teams have. J ONeil doesnt seem to have the stamina to go past the 5th inning making him a very limited role player, looking back now the Whites may have regreted choosing the right hander so high in last season's draft. Hugh Campbell seems to be suffering some effects from his over active throwing season last year and needs significant rest between starts, while old reliable Rynie Wolters just doesnt have the stuff he used to.

In fact Cherokee Fisher (0-2, 1.23 ERA) has found himself coming in from left fied to make 3 starts in the first two months his season, and Fisher to be honest has done very well.

Chicago is sleepwalking in the division with a 8-11 record and a 5-5 month of May. The team is looking towards the upcoming June draft to upgrade things, the problem is however that there doesnt seem to be any overwhelming pitching prospects coming out in this years class.

Draft results coming soon.

League Tidbits
  • Mike Golden the Baltimore right handed pitcher got some bad news this month as he ruptured a finger tendon and will miss at least 3 monhts out of the season.
  • Cincinnati has turned their season into quite a suprize thus far. The Reds who were the leagues worse last season are doing well with an 11-8 record in the National League. Tricky Nichols (10-7, 1.66 ERA) their pitcher is proving to be quite a star.
  • Bill Harbidge of the Cleveland Blues is leading the league in hitting at .390. In a resurgence of pitching in the league, this is the first time since 1871 that not a single player is batting over .400 after the first two months of the season.

June 1875

Frustration Sets in for Chicago
"There really is no excuse for our current league position", says Frank McCarton in regards to the White Stockings 3-7 month of June and an 11-18 game record, 10 games back in the National League.

Chicago has been hugely dissapointing and will now watch another season go to waste. The team clubhouse seems to be volitile as players arnt happy with letting up leads late in games and especially with the contribution of pitcher J ONeil who isnt panning out as the team's top draft choice last season. ONeil is 0-7 and seems to get worse when the game is on the line.

" I have never seen a pitcher so timid and anemic with so much talent." were the words heard by another Chicago veteran who asked to have his identity covered. The Chicago front office is publically backing up their team and pitcher, but provately the team is said to be seething with the position of the current side.

The team also has glaring holes at second base with Gene Kimball batting only .141 and no one else able to fill in for him much better. Even veteran outfielder Steve King is having his poorest season ever, batting only .266. Chicago has yet to hit a home run on the season.

July 1875

Free Falling Whites Trade ONeill

Another losing month the Chicago White Stockings saw their record fall to 14-24, ten games begind leaders Boston and the worst in either league.

For the first time in their history the team is truly under pressure to turn things around as the city and the front office seam embarassed by the current position.

"We just arnt going to sit around and watch it happen." said the team owner, "once you start a culture of losing its very tough to turn it around."

True to his word, the team acted in July off the field to change their fortunes. Chicago traded disgruntled pitcher J Oneil for young potential star Terry Larkin with the Cincinnati Reds. No one on the team was really sorry to see Oneil go, as the hurler was 0-7 on the season.

Along with the pitching the hitting situation is not what it used to be. Cap Anson is the only member of the team batting over .300 for a team that has the most strike out (41) and least stolen bases (25) in the league.

August 1875

In Losing Season, Silver Lining Found
No one is smiling at the Chicago White Stocking camp these days, as the team finished the month of August 5-5 and have an overall pathetic record of 19-29, last in the National League.

However somewhere deep beyond the losing looms some hope. Sometime this mideseason the team pulled a trade that removed a cancer from the dugout and brought in a fresh face and a capable arm. Terry Larkin was the main starter for the month and was a breath of fresh air going 4-3 with a 1.57 ERA. In fact Larkin pitched so well that he was named the NL pitcher of the month, a rare feat indeed for a last place team. So it appears a huge piece to the puzzle has been solved, even if the rest of this season will be hard to watch.

Boston once again is poised to win it all. The Red Stockings are on pace to have an even better season then last year and go into September with a 33-15 record and a 9 game lead.

In other notes Joe Quest will miss most of the rest of the season for the Whites with a spained elbow. The second baseman was batting .277 on the year.

  • The wild wild American League has all teams still in it enterng the final month. Its the Baltimore Orioles however who hold their own destiny with a 2 game lead and the inspired pitching of Al Spalding, the 26 game winner on the mound.
  • The Orioles did however get an injury blow when John Radcliffe the starting third baseman fractured his finger and will miss most of the rest of the season.
  • Though Boston's Ross Barnes is leading the league in almost every offensive catagory, it was Count Gedney of the same team who broke the season home run mark with 5 going into the last month.

Series Hype Overflows
Out of almost nowhere the Philadelphia Athletics snuck up on their opposition to take the American pennant on the last weekend of the season. The A's won their third pennant in 5 years and head to Boston for the World Series.

And now the hype has begun. The two teams with all the championships since the league started in 1871 square off for the 5th World Series. Each team has won it twice, with the Red Stockings takign the last two. Boston for their part won the most games that any team has ever won in a season, finishing with a record of 41-19.

So the matchups are set with Ross Barnes (.400) and Cy Bentley (26-12, 1.10 ERA) of the Red Stockings along with defending league MVP Deaco White face off against George Zeittlein (27-25, 1.63 ERA) and George Wright (312, 36 RBI).

This series will surely be read about and attended by more people then anyother. Who will win their third world series? Most experts stick by the Red Stockings who are the 2 time champions and won 9 more regular season games then the A's.

  • Boston main man Ross Barnes finished the season with a batting average of .400. Barnes had an incredible season since pitching has been much improved but Barnes wasnt phased a battered opposing pitching for 106 hits, a new record.

National League Officially Organizes
The 1876 Major League Baseball season will be something of a fresh new start for the profesional game as team owners met to formolize rules and vote for a new front office over the winter.

The major issue was to create a central authority with exclusive territories in larger cities. There were league wide claims of gambeling and corruption and now with a central authority and persidency the league will be deemed more legitimate.

William Hulbert organzied the new league which will be known as the National League of Profesional Ball Clubs. The owners announced that Morgan Bulkely will be the first league president. The league will remain with a 60 game schedule and an elaborate reserve clause that leaves little chance of players negotiating salaries.

The league will also retain two divisions, the East and West, of 8 teams with a possibility for expansion in the future.

Boston in the meetings changed their name from the Red Stockings to the Red Caps.

White Stockings Name Anson as Leagues Youngest Manager

After a disapointing couple of seasons the Chicago Whte Stockings made a change for the future of their team, naming star infielder Cap Anson as their new manager going into the 1876 season.

Anson is only 24 years and will be extremely young for such a position, but the Chicago front office doesnt seem worried about his lack of experiance.

"Cap is already respected by everyone on the team." said the team owner, "He has been here since our very first game. A new era for a young league deserves a new young man in charge in Chicago."

Chicago opens the season in Cincinnati next month.

Leage Tidbits
  • Joe Gerhardt, short stop for the Brooklyn Atlantics broke a bone in his elbow and will miss 4 to 5 months, likely the entire season in a bad blow for the promising player.
  • Lip Pike, one of the most popular players in the league will miss alot of time. In a freak off the field accident while playing with his son, Pike tore his hamstring and will miss at least 4 months, if not the entire season for the St. Louis Browns. Ticket sales have already suffered.
  • Al Spalding the reigning outstading pitcher of the league in the NL West has an interesting off season venture. The star pitcher has started his own sporting brand company known as "Spalding". The company is already making a bid to manufacture the official game ball for the league.

  2. Cleveland Blues

Things go from Bad to Worse for Chicago
It doesnt take long before the optimism goes out the door as such was the case this spring for the poor Chicago White Stockings. The Whites sit with their worse start in team history at 3-11 with little hope ahead.

In fact the Whites opened the season in Cincinnati and scored a total of one run for the entire series, they were completely shutout in the first two games against Tricky Nichols and company. Poor Terry Larkin pitched as well as he could but with little support the young right hander couldnt help but lose his poise.

The pressure was also mounting on new manager Cap Anson. The decison to appoint the young player manager may has backfired, as the losing has taken its toll on the players performance. Anson is in a terrible slump and is batting a paltry .196 with a single RBI. Depths no one could have imagined for the player.

Along with Anson, Steve King (.222), Fergy Malone (.225) and Jim Devlin .241. Chicago has scored the least runs in the league (40).

Where does the team go from here?

Amazing Historic No Hitter

People were wondering if it was ever going to be done but on a cool Spring afternoon in St. Louis the first ever no hit game was thrown.
Bill Stearns of the St. Louis Browns threw excactly 100 pitches and struck out one without allowing a hit by the Philadelphia Athletics. The A's actually did score a run on the day due to poor defense, but the no hit effort was a first and a true acomplishment.

George Wright grounded out to the short stop to end the game and Stearns was congratulated by his teamates and given a standing ovation by the 1054 fans in attendance.

"To be the first to do this makes me feel like I will always be remembered" said Stearns after the performance, "I want to especially thank Scot Hastings my catcher."

It took 5 years to happen, who knows when we will see one again.

Chicago Makes Moves; More to Come

The White Stockings sporting a 5-14 record have begun the rebuilding process and already made a couple of trades in May. Chicago sent short stop Red Woodhead to Baltimore for outfielder Nat Hicks. Hicks is 31 years old but does have some major league experiance under his belt.

Chicago wasnt done as later in the month they catcher Henry Kessler to Baltimore again for 26 year old Joe Barrett who has a strong glove. Rumors are also swirling the beloved outfielder Steve King may finally be on the way out.

With the June draft coming up this month, the White Stockings are sure to be drafting the best bat available, as the offense continues to struggle and give little support to young Terry Larkin.
