2003 Florida Marlins vs 1988 LA Dodgers

1988 LA Dodgers
Record: 94-67
Finish: Won 1988 World Series over Oakland A's
Manager: Tommy LaSorda
Team ERA: 2.96
Team Avg: .248
Home Runs: 99
Key Players: Orel Hershiser (SP), Kirk Gibson (OF), Steve Sax (2B)

Its all about pitching for this Dodger team that was led and anchored by ace Orel Hershiser who set the MLB record for most consecutive shutout innings. The hitting isnt impressive when looking at the numbers, but like all championship teams, the Dodgers hit when they needed to. This team plays well as the underdog, something that should help them in this competition.

2003 FLORIDA MARLINS
Record: 91-71
Finish: Won World Series over New York Yankees
Manager: Jack Mckeon
Team ERA: 4.04
Team AVG: .266
Home Runs: 157
Key Players: Josh Beckett (SP), Mike Lowell (3B), Carl Pavano (SP)

In part thanks to Steve Bartman this team went on one of the best post season runs in recent playoff history to win the title no one expected them to. Although the stats wont show it, Josh Beckett was dominant for this team by the end of the season and the Marlins are a true threat in any short series. Ivan Rodriguez is the leader in the clubhouse and is the glue that keeps much of this team together.

BECKETT DOMINATES DODGERS, STRIKES OUT 13

The Florida Marlins know who to give the ball to when a big game is at hand, Josh Beckett may be one of the best clutch pitchers to ever throw. Today at Dodger Stadium the Dodgers were totally baffled as Beckett struck out 13 batters before he finally sat down with the game well at hand in the 9th inning. The Marlins were all over the home side in this opening game, dominating and winning by the impressive score of 10-0.

Miguel Cabrera hit a 2 run double in the very first inning as the Marlins put three on the board against an average Orel Hershiser. The game stayed competitive until the 9th inning when again the Marlins took advantage of the Dodger bullpen to score 5 in the inning and complete the blow out. The 4 Dodger errors didnt help matters either.

No one could have predicted this type of scoreline, but in the end its only one game and the Dodgers will have a chance to turn the tables in game 2.

"Game 1 is already forgotten" said Tommy Lasorda, "Im gonna eat if off tonight and get ready for the first pitch tomorrow."

DODGERS BOMB FISH TO TIE SERIES

After being shutout in game 1, the Dodgers came out a completely diffrent team and put on an offensive display few thought they had in them. The Dodgers beat the Marilins 17-6, cracking out 23 hits in the process.

Four diffrent players for the Dodgers had 4 hits with Pedro Guerrero taking the spotlight after driving in 5 runs on the day. Steve Sax drove in three of his own and was 4 for 6 on the day, and not to be outdone Mike Marshall went 4 for 5 and scored an incredible 5 runs on the night.

Florida could not stay away from the big inning and played defense like an amatuer softball team, commiting an incredible 6 errors on the night. Josh Beckett had a sarcastic smile on his face in the dugout as he watched his team fold after what he did in game 1.

Dodger stadium was a party zone in this one, and game 3 moves to Dolphin stadium in Miami.

DODGERS ONE GAME AWAY

Tommy Lasorda gave his team a challange on the long flight accross the country to Miami for Game 3. He challanged his team to win the hard way and take two on the raod returning home with the series rather then another game to play. True baseball motivation works and the Dodgers responded.

Behind underated starter Tim Belcher, 8 strong innings of one earned run, the Dodgers eased their way to a 7-2 game 3 win and are now one game away from making their manager proud.

A series that has seen a lack of home runs continued that way in this one as Kirk Gibson and John Shelby combined to drive in 5 of the 7 runs. It seems as if a different player steps up for this team each game.

The fish will throw Carl Pavano on the mound in what is a huge matchup for both teams, because above everything the Dodgers dont want to have to face Josh Beckett again,

FLORIDA LEAVES IT TO BECKETT

Josh Beckett and Orel Hershiser will do it again but this time for all the marbles as the two ace pitchers square off for the clinching game 5 at Dodger Stadium.

The Marlins didnt die in Miami and beat the Dodgers 4-2 behind a good performance and win by Carl Pavano. Pavano was chosen to start over Dontrel Willies and came through allowing one run in 7 complete innings. Juan Pierre had three hits and Ivan Rodriguez drove in two runs in the win.

"Its all on the line now in game 5" said Mike Marshall, "but people seem to forget that we have a pretty good pitcher representing us too."

Beckett dominated Hershiser and the Dodgers in game 1 winning 10-0. But as everyone is saying, that was then and this is now.

Dodgers cruise in Game 5

In the end when someone thinks of the 88 Dodgers it comes back to Orel Hershiser. Although the star pitcher wasnt incredible today, he was steady enough to help the Dodgers acheive their goal and win comfortably against the 03 Marlins.

A six run 2nd inning started by a 3 run home run by Alfredo Griffin started the effort and put Josh Beckett in hot water, the star right hander was no where near his best and would not get out of the second inning. Later Mike Sciocia tugged around the bases for a two run triple, Dodger Stadium was all light blue today as the atmosphere and win was impressive.

1945 Chicago Cubs vs 1973 Oakland Athletics

1973 Oakland A's
Record: 94-68
Finish: Won World Series over NY Mets
Manager: Dick Williams
Team ERA: 3.29
Team AVG: .260
Home Runs: 147
KeyPlayers: Reggie Jackson OF, Rollie Fingers (RP), Sal Bando (3B)

Back to back world series champions this team had it all. The booming bat of a young Reggie Jackson as well as the never say die grit of Gene Tenace and Sal Bando. This team played under its own rules and didnt always win pretty, but who cared? A fun team to watch that nobody thought was as good as they really were.

1945 Chicago Cubs
Record: 98-56
Finish: Won NL Pennant; Lost to Detroit Tigers in World Series
Manager: Charlie Grimm
Team ERA: 2.98
Team AVG: .277
Home Runs: 57
Key Players: Hank Wyse SP(22-10), Phil Cavaretta 1B (.355, 97 RBI), Andy Pafko OF (.298, 98 RBI)

A Historic team since they were the last Cubbie side to make it to the Series, but even still looking closer at the numbers this was an impressive side. Their pitching especially could hold their own with anyone and for whatever reason (Word War) many of these players put it all together to have career years in 45.

Pitching matchups
Game 1: Hank Wyse (22-10, 2.68 ERA) vs Ken Holtzman (21-13, 2.97)
Game 2: Claude Passeau (17-9, 2.46) vs Catfish Hunter (21-5, 3.34)
Game 3: Paul Derringer (16-11, 3.45) vs Vida Blue (20-9, 3.28)

A WILD OPENER GOES TO OAKLAND

Pitching was the fartherst strong point for either team today as the A's took game 1 of the five game series against the 45 Cubbies 10-9.

Phil Caverretta hit a 450 foot three run homer in the top of the 8th to give the home side a 2 run lead but the pesky A's came back in the bottom of the inning off of Hy Vandenburg and took the lead again with a 3 run inning.

Overall this game had it all, but especially the 5 errors by the Cubs really cost them on this day, short stop Roy Hughes causing two of them and setting up big innings earlier in the game for the home team. The Cubs will need to play fundamental baseball if they are to compete in this series.

Deron Johnson for the A's drove in two including the winning run in the bottom of the 8th inning.

Cubs Hammer A's in Game 2

The Cubs responded well in game 2 to say the least and hammered the 73 Oakland team by a final score of 14-6.

"We just gave up today" said A's manager Dick Williams, "I cant allow that to happen again, we just quit."

The A's and Catfish Hunter got ambushed and again it was Phil Cavaretta who was the star of the show. Cavaretta hit another long home run and drove in 5 runs making it 8 RBI in the first two games of the series. Don Johnson and Peanuts Lowery also joined the parade with 3 RBI each.

How will Oakland recover from a loss like this heading back to Wrigley Field for game 3.

Yeah, I am not sure why errors are so high in most of the games. Any idea of a setting I can look into to make the defense better?

Oakland Moves On

The 1973 Oakland Athletics closed out the series against the 45 Cubs at Wrigley Field with another comfortable win by the score of 9-6. Billy North continued his very hot hitting and Blue Moon Odom had it all working picking up the win.

Joe Rudi and Reggie Jackson also scattered 8 hits between them and Ray Prim lasted only 3 innings before getting the hook. The Cubbies made one last comeback in a 3 run ninth inning with Cavaretta and Pafko going deep again, but Rollie Fingers in the end closed the door.

2003 Chicago Cubs vs 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates

1902 Pittsburgh Pirates
Record: 103-36
Finish: National League Champions. No World Series played
Manager: Fred Clarke
Team ERA: 2.30
Team AVG: .286
Home Runs: 18
Key Players: Honus Wagner (.330 91 RBI), Jack Chesbro (28-6, 2.17), Deacon Phillipe (20-9, 2.05 ERA)

This early Pirates team had an incredible record and a legend all its own. Other then star Honus Wagener this team had three 20 game winners. Like many teams of this time the Pirates did it all with pitching and running, once again small ball at its very best. We shall see how they do with modern day teams.

2003 Chicago Cubs
Record: 88-74
Finish: Lost in the NLCS to the Marlins
Manager: Dusty Baker
Team ERA: 3.83
Team AVG: 2.59
Home runs: 172
Key Players: Mark Prior P (18-6, 2.43), Sammy Sosa OF (40 HR 103 RBI), Kerry Wood (14-11, 3.20)

Numbers wise this team may not have had it all, but the facts remains that, barring Steve Bartman, this team came 5 outs away from making the World Series. It was Mark Prior and Kerry Wood on the mound the had a magical season, and Slammin Sammy Sosa a at the plate doing the hitting. The high overall team ERA could be an concern, but this team just needs another chance.

Pitching matchups
Game 1: Mark Prior (18-6, 2.43ERA) vs Jack Chesbro (28-6, 2.17)
Game 2: Kerry Wood (14-11, 3.20) vs Deacon Phillipe (20-9, 2.09)
Game 3: Carlos Zambrano (13-11, 3.11) vs Jesse Tannehill (20-6, 1.95)

Pirates Win Tight One in Ninth

In a great opening game to this series it came to no ones suprize that the 2003 Cubs blew a late lead and went down to defeat. Leading 7-6 in the ninth inning the Cubs turned to closer Joe Borowski to close the door. Honus Wagner came up with runners on the corners and one out, instead of putting him on the Cubs pitched to the star and he tied the game with a single. Ginger Beaumont then won the game with another hit turning things around and sending the Pirates up in the series.

A Moises Alou double gave the Cubs the lead in the very first inning to give the Cubs a 2 run lead but Pittsburgh came back with 5 runs off of Mark Prior in the 4th. The game was tied at 3 in the 8th when an error allowed Alex Gonzalez to score the go ahead run. All leading up to the 9th where the Cubs just couldnt hold it.

Cubs Tie Series Behind Wood

The Cubs finally did close out a game and did it in style by tying the series on the road and leaving on their leader Kerry Wood. Wood didnt have his best stuff but got out of a number of jams and left with his team up one.

The Pirates took a one run lead in the 3rd after Honus Wagner came through with a two out single. But in the 5th the Cubs ran and scored two runs, capped by the go ahead hit by Aramis Ramirez scoring Corey Patterson.

Joe Borowski redeemed himself by completing the save and closing the door, Mike Remlinger was the set up guy in the 8th.

Three hits in total for the Pirates, something they cant repeat going back to Wrigley Field.

Big Z's Turn to Shine

Back at Wrigley Field the 03 Cubs played a strong game and got an even stronger complete game pitching performance from Carlos Zambrano to take the series lead 2-1. Zambrano struck out 7 and didnt allow an earned run all game, he had great command and didnt look tired even after throwing over 110 pitched balls.

Jesse Tannehill didnt have the same kind of luck and lost control of the game in the 5th inning where the Cubs put 6 on the board knocking him out of the game. Eric Karros cleared the bases with a 3 run double and the Cubs knew they were in their way.

Now the Cubs face their toughest task, a clinching game. Will the ghosts haunt this team again or could they put a very good Pirates team away?

Cubs 16 Runs Finish Pirates

The 2003 Chicago Cubs did what many thought they couldnt do and beat the 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates to close out a series and remove any temporary curses. The Cubs bats exploded on a day when the wind was blowing out at Wrigley Field for 16 runs.

11 Runs in the 5th and 6th inning broke this game wide open as Aramis Ramirez drove in 5 runs and Alex Gonzalez another 4. Matt Clement held his own on the mound, winning the way he is accustomed too.....not pretty but efficient.

There was wide celebration by the Cubs fans as this was finally a time where they closed out a big series, but the Cubs tend to do well whe they are the underdogs.
