I can't stand Mcarver and Buck.. not enthusiasm for the game at all. Makes things feel utterly dead in the press box.. They'd be better off putting a pair of bricks in the booth IMO or at least someone who pretends to enjoy their job and can offer something slightly more insightful then the dribble/long periods of silence we get from the current duo.

Last night is a perfect example of why the closer position is ruining baseball. Doesn't it seem like with you down 2 runs and the heart of your order coming up, you would want your best reliever in there?

Well, color me a Cliff Lee fan as of last night. Great stuff against a formidable lineup. In addition, he stood out as a fielder, with the help of a little luck, but it was something to watch in any event, e.g. the back-handed snatch, the ho-hum pop up catch. He was as relaxed as relaxed can get. Don't think I've ever seen anything like his demeanor on the mound, inarguably in his comfort zone, which he said in post-game was "being in the majors." I thought that interesting.

Also, no one's mentioned the umpire's ruling-by-committee meeting on the double play? You don't see that kind of scrutiny and cooperation everyday in order to get it right. I thought the game, overall, was a real gem marred only by the Rollins overthrow, but it happens.

I'm still astounded about that performance... Amazing. Unbelievable command through all 9 innings, and that last pitch to Posada was just nasty. Good to see. Also, I have to believe that Rollins overthrow would be something that doesn't happen in a closer game.

Hopefully Pedro has his stuff tonight to give it to the Yankees one more time.

Yes. I have watched a lot of baseball and it seems everytime a crew has gotten together to discuss what has happened, they end up getting it right. The problem with umps is when one tries to make the decision all on his own. Any time there is a close call it would probably benifit the game if the ump would swallow his pride and admit he didn't see it and ask for help.

And if they show enthusiasm they deal with people whining that they're "against" their team. It's a no-win, really.

Thats all I wanted, to get a replay and see wether they really were off the plate or not. It felt like most of the night the strike zone was on the large side for both teams and those borderline pitches were being called strikes until those 2 at-bats. Idk, maybe I was just frustrated. Again, all I wanted was a replay that they were so willing to give all night except then.
I didn't see them do it on the Utley AB. They surely weren't doing it all night, though.

That said, I checked the MLB.com Gamecast to check the strike zone analysis of those ABs. Based on that, the Rollins AB they were spot on. The Victorino AB, the last pitch should have been called a strike.

Regarding the Buck/McCarver comments. McCarver was fired by the yankees so im sure that hasto play somewhat into his feelings toward the team.
Yeah, he's really struggled since. You're grasping at very tiny straws.

Buck I was told was affiliated or had been with the Red Sox, I tried checking on that real quick but wasn't finding anything. If he had been, he'll also be at least semi-biased against them, if not then I was mis-informed.
Guess that makes Suzyn Waldman anti-Yankee, too.

Cliff Lee was totally awesome last night. I stayed up specifically to watch him close it out. I'm sure Rollins felt like a turd breaking up his shutout like that. He was great.

Right, I specifically remember this too. One thing about pitch trax - I think it shows where the ball ends up in the mitt, not where it crosses the plate. With Marte's sweeping slider, it may catch the front corner of the plate, but end up outside in the mitt. Though I agree, the pitches to Utley were pretty questionable.

I listened to an interview by the CEO or whatever from one of the companies who does these pitch trackers (I think there are two of them). He stated that the technology allows them to get the ball as it breaks the plane of home plate at the front. This confirms what I see for the most part. He also said that a backdoor slider or other such pitch that misses the front of the plate but end up to our eyes as a strike will be correctly called. Having umpired more than a few games that is one of the toughest calls to me.

There is no way you can watch a borderline pitch on TV and think you see it better than the pitch tracker. The camera angle, distance, height and some high school geometry can easily show that.

That makes sense. I knew it was a single plane, but I couldn't remember which one. Makes those calls a little more suspect even. I remember one too (maybe one of the Hughes or Robertson pitches in the 8th) where the pitch trax showed the pitch clearly inside the left side of the box but was called a ball. Kinda the opposite of the Marte calls. Maybe the Trax got out of alignment. Or the umpire got out of alignment.

I don't really put much stock in the Pitch Trax. It is what it is - a gimmicky visual from Fox.

I'm not one to crow, but it really looks to me that the Yankees are in for a quick exit.Their bullpen is awful,CC cannot beat the Phillies(0 for 3 last 3 games),and now they've lost home field.Rollins was right,Phils in 5.

I believe you mean best of seven, first team to win four. Best of four looks a little confusing......
