I know i'm going to be posting a few things on here. Let me make sure to say here that I think that these are the best initial release rosters that I can remember on an OOTP game. Very happy with this.

back to my rays ;-)

Kazmir's 4th year should be a team option. Here's the page I'm using.

As far as I can tell though, we aren't taking 2 seamers as an individual pitch here, which is a bit surprising.
If you see pitchers who throw a 2-seam IRL and not in the game, please post them. The problem I ran into was that the PitchFX data we use doesn't really distinguish well between multiple pitches (2-seam/split/FB, slider/cut, etc.) so it can be a bit ambiguous at times.

If you point them out I'll be sure to add them though.

Here are a few observations/concerns I posted in another thread and should probably go here:

I have looked in the editor to confirm that there are 4-5 guys or so per organization that have all 0s for their pitches. You end up with hundreds of these guys getting released after the first draft and clogging the FA. This appears to be the only way to get a stuff rating of 20 - is this the idea?

Additionally, the free agency ranks are almost all pitchers and catchers as the AI loads up on position players since in my run the injuries have hit position players disproportionately hard compared to real life.

Regarding the minor league league totals, every minor league through June has an ERA of at least 4.70 and average of over .270. This leads to the somewhat comical situation of batters hitting .300 being not ready for AAA and pitchers with ERAs of over 6.00 not being demoted. I'm assuming this is tied to the league totals and not the effect of the new minor league DL.

One last thing, and this is far more minor, Brandon Inge has no catcher rating despite having caught 60 games last year - is this a design move? I see he has fielding ratings. If its a design move to keep him from being pushed there, then I understand.

If I recall correctly, that was intentional, to prevent AI monkeybusiness. Here is another example. Take a look at A-Rod. In this set, he is a straight 3B. If you give him the ability to play SS, the AI will get rid of Jeter by any means necessary and move A-Rod to SS. That may be the logical thing to do, but the AI doesn't have to read the New York Post.

Fair enough - I figured as much. What team wouldn't want a .220 hitting catcher who whines about playing the position and claims he's vastly superior at 3B...oh wait...

Here is some data and anecdotes to back this up, starting first with the leaguewide stats for the first year in the quickstart:

League Stats:
Code:
MLB(MLB) .264 AVG, 4.21 ERA AL
         .265 AVG, 4.28 ERA NL
IL (AAA) .280 AVG, 5.44 ERA
PCL(AAA) .274 AVG, 5.25 ERA AC
         .279 AVG, 5.43 ERA PC
EL (AA) .268 AVG, 5.07 ERA
SL (AA) .265 AVG, 4.88 ERA
TL (AA) .261 AVG, 4.95 ERA
CAL(A+) .258 AVG, 4.92 ERA
CAR(A+) .260 AVG, 5.04 ERA
FSL(A+) .259 AVG, 4.97 ERA
MID(A) .247 AVG, 4.59 ERA
SAL(A) .250 AVG, 4.66 ERA
NYP(A-) .274 AVG, 5.60 ERA
NWL(A-) .291 AVG, 6.16 ERA
APP(R) .319 AVG, 8.09 ERA
AZL(R) .335 AVG, 8.70 ERA
GCL(R) .348 AVG, 10.13 ERA
PIO(R) .318 AVG, 7.42 ERA
Here are some examples from my rookie league team in the GCL:

CL T.Ogasahara has an overall 39/12/28 (out of 200) with projected MLB stats of .377 OAVG and 8.00 ERA...his real stats are 26.59 ERA, 4.59 WHIP, .532 OAVG in 22.0IP. MR J.Bryant has an overall 39/12/11 (out of 200) with projected MLB stats of .380 OAVG and 8.38 ERA...his real stats are 16.99 ERA, 3.71 WHIP, .446 OAVG in 29.2IP. In general, my rookie level team has an ERA of 14.47.

Matter2003 pointed out this:

The Burlington Bees of the Midwest League are incorrectly listed as being based in Burlington, North Carolina instead of Burlington, Iowa.

I logged a bug to get that fixed in the MAL. I am not sure how to handle that for the roster set.

I'll try to rework some league totals for the next set -- I have them correct in the OOTP9 version, but was under the assumption that they were being fixed by the higher ups for this version. I'll see what happened there.

If anyone want to give the minor league totals from the last version of my rosters for 9 a shot, please let us know the results.

White Sox Notes

Scott Linebrink
Seems a little underrated. His in-game projection is for a 4.68 ERA. However the following are his "real-world" projections.
PECOTA = 4.33
ZIPS = 4.29
Marcel = 4.09
Bill James = 3.53

As you can see the in-game projection is much higher than the others. Also, his last 3 years he has been at 3.69, 3.71, and 3.57 respectively. I think this has to do with his stuff rating. Specifically, I think his slider is rated too low at an 18 rating right now. He threw it 14% of the time last year while only throwing his splitter 4% of the time. His Change he threw 20% and FB 62% of the time. I would think the slider rating would be a little higher than a well-below average 18 if he threw it that much. His FB could probably use a slight boost to a tick above major league average as well

I was expecting to add more players, but at first glance everything else looks awesome right now. Terrific job fellas!

I noticed some players had full minor league statistics and some did not? Any reason why some players have full minor league statistics and some not? So far, a great roster set - Far suceeds previous releases. Thanks as always.

1871 Draft - C Bill Barrett, SS Francis Abercrombie, CF Joe McDermott, RF Bill Kelly, C Charlie Mills all listed as being 0 years old. All are listed as having DOB 5-5-1870.

Talk about drafting an early prospect.

Where do you get all these projections so easily? I try searching for them, but I have a hard time. Do you guys just use scouting reports along with Minor League stats and MLE's to project present/potential for prospects?

Fangraphs.com for the majority of the projections. On any players page above each "block" of stats you can see a "Show Projections" link that have all of them. For PECOTA you have to have a baseball prospectus subscription.

Which ones to you guys like the most (or do you just combine a lot of them)? I love Red Sox Prospects* |* SoxProspects.com for my Red Sox scouting reports, but do any other teams have similar fan run sites with scouting reports for every minor league player? I know baseball cube has a good stat layout with their own ratings system for potential. Just trying to get an idea for some sources I can use for some teams I'm not as familiar with (NL West for example).

Well, there are about 6,000 players and no easy way to enter stats. We had to pull up their stats from baseball-reference in one window, pull up the DB in another, put them side-by-side and start entering. It was a time consuming process that eventually had to be put on the back burner to focus on the ratings. Another thing that we can hopefully get to, but will probably have to wait until the roles and contracts are all tightened up.

Yeah, there was no mass editor that would allow us to randomly assign ratings to guys that are not really considered prospects. In an effort to save time and focus on the major leaguers and top 30 prospects, they were given very generic ratings for the time being. I hope this is an area we are able to get to very soon. Would like to see the majority of them have the ability to stay at their current level with a very low ceiling.

I think next time if you were able to give each team to 30 different roster helpers and have someone cross check them, then you could get it done pretty easily (ratings and stats). Just an idea for the next game.

Looking over the Marlins, Hayden Penn is stuck in AA and has cleared waivers. He was picked up right before the season started but he was out of options so he had to start out on the major league squad. The team tried to hide him in a mop up role but he proved so inept that they DFA'd him today.

All in all though it seems like most of importing things were pretty dead on. I've seen a lot of fringe prospects very accurately depicted and that kind of stuff is very important to me.

Another thing that would be good to see now although it wasn't known at the time is to see David Ortiz's fall accurately depicted. I'm not knocking the roster makers though, because these were done way before Ortiz just started sucking as bad as he has. Wouldn't surprise me to see the Red Sox give him a fake DL stint to get him a rehab assignment, or see them outright DFA him.
