The 21-13 1st place Yankees hosted the 14-17 4th place Twins in the rubber game of a 3 game series.

Randy Johnson pitched against Daniel Cabrera

The Twins struck early in the top of the 1st, when Gary Matthews Jr. and Joe Mauer had back to back doubles. In the 2nd, Michael Cuddyer's 1st HR of the year (401 feet to right center) gave the Twins a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 2nd, the Yankees loaded the bases when Cabrera walked the 1st 3 batters. He looked like he might get out of the inning when Gregg Zaun hit a 1-2 fielder's choice grounder and Nick Punto struck out. But, Derek Jeter was hit by a full count pitch to score Mark Teixeira. Jordan Schafer then hit what should have been an inning ending grounder to 2nd, but 2B Alexi Casilla threw the ball into the stands, instead of to 1B Justin Morneau, which allowed Austin Jackson and Zaun to score. Alex Rodriguez then made the Twins really pay for the error when he passed Mark McGwire on the all time HR list with a 347 foot shot to left (#9 on the year, #584 career, #8 all time). The HR gave the Yankees a 6-2 lead and sent Cabrera to the showers.

Mike Lamb hit a 2 run HR (#5, 337 feet to right) in the top of the 3rd. In the bottom of the inning, Jeter's fly out scored Teixeira and A-Rod's bases loaded walk scored Zaun to give the Yankees a 8-4 lead. In the 4th, Zaun's RBI single scored Ryan Howard. Joe Mauer led off the 5th with a 337 foot HR to right (#3).

After Michael Nix, making his major league debut for the Yankees, had retired the Twins 1-2-3 in the 6th, they loaded the bases off him with no outs in the 7th. But, the only damage they did off Rafael Soriano was a flyout by Delmon Young, which scored Casilla. In the 7th, A-Rod scored on a balk by Pat Neshek and Ryan Howard's RBI single scored Manny Ramirez to make it 11-6.

In the 9th, Lamb hit his 2nd HR of the game--a 3 run, 345 foot shot to left.

Final--Yankees 11, Twins 9

Gregg Zaun had 3 hits and Ryan Howard reached base safely 4 times (2 H (1 2B), 2 BB) for the Yankees. Mike Lamb hit 2 HR, Joe Mauer reached base safely 5 times (2 H (1 2B, 1 HR), 3 BB) and Justin Morneau was 0 for 5 for the Twins. Both starters took a pounding--Johnson--5 IP, 8 H, 5 R/ER, 2 BB, 5 SO. Cabrera--1 2/3 IP, 2 H, 6 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO.

Tomorrow, the Yankees will host the Orioles in the start of a 3 game series.

The 22-14 1st place Yankees hosted the 19-17 3rd place Orioles in the 2nd game of a 3 game series.

Jake Peavy started against John Thomson.

With a day game after a night game, the Yankees rested Jorge Posada, with Gregg Zaun taking his spot, and also gave rookie Jordan Schafer the day off, with him replaced by Reggie Willits.

The Yankees put together a threat in the 2nd, when they loaded the bases with 1 out. But, Austin Jackson hit into an inning ending 6-4-3 DP.

The Orioles broke up a scoreless tie in the 4th, when Garret Anderson and Bill Rowell had consecutive 2 outs doubles and Andrew Lefave's RBI single scored Rowell to make it 2-0. In the bottom of the inning, Ryan Howard hit his 12th HR of the year--a 418 foot solo 1 out shot to left center.

The Orioles added to their lead in the 5th, when Luke Scott's RBI double scored Brandon Tripp. The Yankees countered with a Alex Rodriguez RBI single, to score Derek Jeter, in the bottom of the inning.

Zaun led off the bottom of the 7th with a single and was replaced by pinch runner Brandon Boggs. Boggs stole 2nd and 3rd and scored on Jeter's RBI ground out that made it 3-3. The Yankees then decided to keep Boggs in RF, as he is a far superior defensive player than Austin Jackson, as well as Jackson continuing to be in a slump. So, Boggs remained in the game in the 8th spot in the order, with Posada moving into the 9th spot.

A-Rod led off the 8th with a line drive double down the line in left, which knocked Thomson out of the game and he was replaced by former Yankee Vinnie Chulk. But, Chulk retired the next 3 batters to preserve the 3-3 tie.

The Yankees called up in Garrett White, has been effective so far in his first weeks in the majors. But, after White retired the 1st 2 hitters, fellow rookie Tripp hit his 2nd career HR, both off the Yankees in the past 10 days--a 398 foot shot to right center that gave the Orioles a 4-3 lead.

The Orioles called in George Sherrill to pitch the 9th. Willits lined a single to right, but was thrown out trying to steal 2nd. Boggs doubled off the wall in center. On the 1st pitch to Posada, Boggs took off for 3rd. Ramon Hernandez threw the ball into left field, allowing Boggs to score the tying run. Posada drew a 3-1 walk, but the Yankees were unable to advance the winning run any further, as Jeter and Ruben Gotay both struck out to end the inning.

After walking Scott to open the 10th, White struck out Kevin Millar and Rowell and got Lefave to pop up to Jeter to end the inning.

A-Rod struck out to start the bottom of the 10th. Manny Ramirez singled to right and took 2nd when Howard walked. The Yankees sent in Jordan Schafer to pinch run for Ramirez at 2nd. Mark Teixeira struck out on a 2-2 pitch. Willits then lined a base hit to left and Schafer scored the winning run.

Final--Yankees 5, Orioles 4

In other news around the division--Marc Rzepcynski pitched 8 shutout innings to lead the Blue Jays to a 6-0 win over the Mariners. Carlos Gonzalez hit 2 HR to help lead the A's to a 10-7 win over the Red Sox. The Rays lost to the Indians, 12-2. The Yankees lead the Red Sox by 2 1/2, the Orioles by 4, the Blue Jays by 5 1/2 and the Rays by 6 1/2.

In other news around the majors--Nick Swisher hit 2 HR and Mark Buehrle pitched a complete game, no ER, to lead the White Sox to a 7-1 win over the Rangers. Hideki Matsui's 8th inning HR off Tim Lincecum broke up a 2-2 tie and helped the Phillies to a 3-2 win over the Giants.

The 23-14 1st place Yankees hosted the 19-18 3rd place Orioles in the rubber game of a 3 game series.

In between yesterday and today's games, both teams made moves.

The Yankees signed free agent Gary Sheffield, immediately added him to the roster, sent RF Austin Jackson to the minors and, to make room on the 40 man roster, designated minor league SS Kevin Randel for assignment.

The Orioles made 2 trades. They traded LF Kevin Millar to the Reds for minor league Ps Alex Burnett and Carlos Fisher. They also traded SS Orlando Cabrera to the Pirates for P Zach Duke.

Joba Chamberlain started against Adam Loewen

The Yankees gave Manny Ramirez the day off.

The Yankees struck 1st in the bottom of the 2nd, when Sheffield's RBI single scored Alex Rodriguez. The Orioles tied the game in the 3rd, when they loaded the bases with 2 outs and Bobby Abreu drew a walk. But, Chamberlain got Luke Scott to fly out to right to end the threat.

In the bottom of the inning, A-Rod's RBI single scored Reggie Willits. Ryan Howard followed with a 457 foot blast to right center--a 3 run HR, #14 of the season. Mark Teixeira's RBI double in the 4th scored Willits to make it a 6-1 game.

Howard led off the 5th with a 398 foot HR (#15) and Derek Jeter's RBI single scored Jorge Posada to make it 8-1.

In the 7th, Brandon Boggs hit his 1st HR of the year (348 feet to right). In the 8th, Rodriguez hit a 454 foot shot to left center (2 run HR, #10 of the year, #585 career).

Final--Yankees 11, Orioles 1

Ryan Howard hit 2 HR (2 BB), Gary Sheffield had 3 hits and Ruben Gotay was 0 for 5 for the Yankees. Joba Chamberlain's line--7 IP, 4 H, 1 R/ER, 3 BB, 8 SO. Adam Loewen took a pounding--2 1/3 IP, 4 H, 5 R/ER, 3 BB, 4 SO.

After the game, the Yankees made more roster moves, sending P Michael Nix to the minors and calling up P Justin Cassel. Cassel will take Mike Mussina's spot in the rotation, with Mussina ready to come off the DL to make the next start. Cassel gets the callup by virtue of (1) being on the 40 man roster and ready to make the start and (2) Tyler Robertson had made the prior start in Mussina's place, but he is ineligible to return since he was sent to the minors within the past 10 days. Robertson was supposed to be in the majors for 2 starts, but had to be sent down, due to a more pressing need of getting another arm into the bullpen.

The Yankees are off tomorrow, as they head to the west coast to play the A's and Mariners in 3 game series.

In other news around the division--Ichiro Suzuki had 3 hits (1 HR) to help lead the Mariners to a 6-5 win over the Blue Jays. Jose Reyes had 3 hits (1 2B0 to help the Rays beat the Indians, 8-3. The Red Sox lost to the A's, 4-1. The Yankees lead the Red Sox by 3 1/2, the Orioles by 5 and the Rays and Blue Jays by 6 1/2.

In other news around the majors--Jim Thome homered as the White Sox beat the Rangers, 3-2. Dmitri Young had 4 hits (1 2B, 1 HR) to help the Astros beat the Reds, 8-7. Rookie Fernando Martinez hit 2 HR for the Mets, but they still lost to the Rockies, 7-3.

The Yankees had the day off.

In other news around the division--None. The entire division was off.

In other news around the majors--There were only 3 games in the majors today. Justin Morneau had 3 hits (1 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR) to help the Twins to a 11-4 win over the Royals. Royals 3B Alex Gordon, who is following a good 2008 season with a very good start to 2009, strained his oblique muscle and is headed to the 15 day DL.

In signing news--The Tigers re-signed 3B Miguel Cabrera to a 3 year, $35.34 million contract. He would have a big prize in the 2009-10 free agent market.

The Dodgers re-signed LF Jason Bay to a 3 year, $19.29 million contract. He also would have been eligible for free agency after the season.

The 24-14 1st place Yankees visited the 20-17 2nd place A's in the opener of a 3 game series.

Justin Cassel was called up to make a spot start for the Yankees and opposed the AL ERA leader, Danny Borrell.

Jay Bruce returned to the Yankees's lineup, after missing a week and a half, due to a thumb injury.

The Yankees loaded the bases with 1 out in the 1st, but Mark Teixeira struck out and Ryan Howard flied to right.

The Yankees started the scoring in the 3rd, when Manny Ramirez's RBI single scored Derek Jeter. The Yankees loaded the bases with no outs, but the only run was a Howard fly out that scored Alex Rodriguez. In the 4th, the Yankees loaded the bases for the 3rd time, with 1 out. Manny Ramirez's fly out scored Rub Gotay to make it 3-0.

In the 5th, Ruben Gotay hit a 2 run HR (Gary Sheffield on base)--his 4th of the year, 361 feet to right--to knock out Borrell.

The A's loaded the bases with no outs in the 6th and Chris Snyder's RBI single scored Travis Buck. With the bases still loaded, that was all for Cassel, who was replaced by Kyle Farnsworth. Daric Barton's 2 RBI single scored Jack Cust and Eric Chavez and Aaron Boone was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. After Farnsworth struck out Cliff Pennington, Carlos Gonzalez's RBI single scored Snyder and Mark Ellis's RBI walk tied the game, 5-5. Farnsworth was replaced by Billy Wagner. Travis Buck's RBI single scored Aaron Boone to give the A's a 6-5 lead. Cust struck out on a 3-2 pitch. Final--A's 10, Yankees 7

After the game, the Yankees made some roster moves. Cassel was returned to the minors, with German Marte getting the callup. Marte is expected to last until Mussina comes off the DL to make his next start. The Yankees also placed Wagner on the 15 day DL, due to elbow tendinitis, but most observers think it is really a case of slumpitis. The Yankees signed P Eddie Guardado to take Wagner's spot and, to make room on the 40 man roster, designated minor league SS Jaime Pedroza for assignment.

In other news around the division--Vladimir Guerrero had 4 hits (2 2B, 1 HR) to help the Angels to a 6-5 win over the Blue Jays. The Orioles lost to the Tigers, 5-1. Twins rookie Dustin Martin hit 2 HR to help them beat the Red Sox, 6-5. The Rays scored 2 in the 9th, to beat the Royals, 7-6. But, the Rays lost 2B Akinori Iwamura to a knee injury and he is expected to miss 2 months.

In other news around the majors--Mariners rookie Mike Saunders hit 2 HR to help them beat the White Sox, 6-3. Cody Haerther hit 2 HR to help the Dodgers beat the Mets, 11-4. C.C. Sabathia pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings to lead the Cubs to a 5-0 win over the Astros.

The 24-16 1st place Yankees visited the 22-17 2nd place A's in the finale of a 3 game series. The A's were going for the sweep.

Johan Santana pitched against Lenny DiNardo

In a day game after a night game, the Yankees rested both C Jorge Posada (replaced by Gregg Zaun) and DH Ryan Howard (replaced by Gary Sheffield).

The A's struck first when Eric Byrnes delivered an inside the park HR (his 4th HR of the year) in the bottom of the 1st. The Yankees tied the game in the 4th, when Zaun's RBI single scored Mark Teixeira.

Jordan Schafer led off the top of the 7th for the Yankees with a slow roller down the 3rd base line, which he beat out for an infield hit. Schafer went to 3rd on a run and hit single by Zaun. A quarter of the way through the season, the Yankees have a grand total of 0 SAC. Nevertheless, the squeeze sign was given to Ruben Gotay. 1B Aaron Boone came home with the throw, but had no chance to get Schafer. Jay Bruce followed with a line drive single to right, which the slow Zaun had no choice to score on, so the Yankees had the bases full with no outs. Keith Foulke came in to replace DiNardo. Derek Jeter flied out to center, with Zaun having no chance to score. Alex Rodriguez then delivered a 2 RBI single, scoring Zaun and Gotay, to make it a 4-1 game.

Boone led off the bottom of the inning with his 1st HR of the year--364 feet to left.

In the bottom of the 9th, the Yankees called in Mariano Rivera to pitch and sent speedster, but limp armed, Brandon Boggs in to LF as a defensive replacement for Manny Ramirez. With 1 out, pinch hitter Daric Barton doubled and pinch hitter Travis Buck was hit by a pitch. Eric Chavez's grounder to 1st put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. Pinch hitter Tony Gutierrez lined a base hit to left, scoring Barton. But, Buck couldn't take advantage of Boggs's arm and was held at 3rd. Pinch hitter Hank Blalock then lifted a shallow fly to left, which Boggs raced in to catch to end the game.

Final--Yankees 4, A's 3

Next up, the Yankees go to Seattle for a 3 game series.

In other news around the division--The Red Sox lost to the Twins, 12-7. The Orioles beat the Tigers, 5-4. The Rays lost to the Royals, 7-2. The Angels scored a run in the 9th to beat the Blue Jays, 1-0, with Vladimir Guerrero having a 3 hit (1 3B) day. The Yankees lead the Orioles by 4, the Red Sox by 4 1/2, the Rays by 5 1/2 and the Blue Jays by 7 1/2.

In other news around the majors--Former Yankee Jose Contreras pitched a shutout (9 IP, 5 H, 0 R/ER, 0 BB, 6 SO) to lead the White Sox to a 5-0 win over the Mariners.

In transaction news--The Twins re-signed 1B Justin Morneau to a 3 year contract extension. Morneau would have been a free agent at the end of the season. So far this year, Morneau, Miguel Cabrera, Brandon Webb and Jason Bay have all come off the free agent market, setting a stage for what looks to be the weakest free agent market in history.

The 25-16 1st place Yankees visited the 17-23 3rd place Mariners in the opener of a 3 game series.

The series featured the best (Yankees) and worst (Mariners) scoring teams in the league, while the Mariners come into the series ranked #1 in starters ERA.

Jake Peavy pitched against Erik Bedard. The game featured a pitching matchup between 2 of the best pitchers in the league so far in 2009, with Bedard leading the league in ERA and Peavy ranking 5th. However, due to the pathetic 19th century mindset of rating pitchers based on "W"-"L" records, the press and fans have been outraged at how "bad" these pitchers have been, neither of which have gotten the run support, even Peavy with the powerful Yankees lineup.

The Yankees struck early, when Jay Bruce led off the game reaching on an E3 and immediately scored on Derek Jeter's triple. Alex Rodriguez's ground out scored Jeter. In the 4th, Ruben Gotay's RBI single scored Gary Sheffield to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead.

After Terry Tiffee led off the bottom of the 4th with a double, Matt Tuiasosopo followed with his 2nd HR of the year (349 feet to right) to make it a 3-2 game.

In the 5th, A-Rod delivered a 430 foot shot to center, his 11th HR of the year and 586th career, which ties him with Frank Robinson for 7th on the all time list. The Mariners loaded the bases, with no outs, in the bottom of the inning and a WP scored Mike Saunders to cut the Yankees lead to 4-3. Peavy then struck out Greg Dobbs and get Terry Tiffee and Tuiasosopo to fly out to get out of the inning.

In the 6th, Jeter's RBI double scored Gotay and Manny Ramirez's RBI single scored Jeter to give the Yankees a 6-3 lead.

In the 9th, the Yankees were hoping to give Mariano Rivera the day off. But, with 2 outs, Saunders's RBI triple, off Kyle Farnsworth, scored Greg Norton and brought the tying run to the plate. Rivera came into the game and gave up a single to Jamie McOwen to make it 6-5. Raul Ibanez then hit a drive to deep right center, but Bruce made the catch at the wall to end the game.

Final--Yankees 6, Mariners 5

Derek Jeter (1 2B, 1 3B, 1 HBP) and Alex Rodriguez (1 HR) had 3 hits for the Yankees. Ichiro Suzuki was 0 for 5 for the Mariners. Erik Bedard took a pounding--5 2/3 IP, 12 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO.

In other news around the division--John Jaso hit a walk off 3 run HR in the bottom of the 11th to lead the Rays to a 4-1 win over the Tigers, while David Price (9 1/3 IP, 4 H, 1 R/ER, 0 BB, 10 SO) lowered his ERA to 2.08 and overtook Bedard for the league lead. The Orioles lost to the Twins, 5-2. The Blue Jays beat the Rangers, 7-2. Jon Lester pitched 8 shutout innings and Dustin Pedroia had 4 hits (1 2B) to lead the Red Sox to a 5-0 win over the Royals. The Yankees lead the Red Sox by 4 1/2, the Orioles by 5, the Rays by 5 1/2 and the Blue Jays by 7 1/2.

In other news around the majors--Travis Hafner hit 2 HR (3 hits) to help the Indians to a 10-6 win over the Angels. Jamie Garcia pitched 8 shutout innings and Albert Pujols had 3 hits (1 2B, 1 HR) to lead the Cardinals to a 7-0 win over the Nationals. Clayton Kershaw pitched 6 shutout innings as the Dodgers beat the Phillies, 2-0.
