So, you did decide to include Rose even though he is an old man by 1980. Interesting choice.

Ah yes, that site will do it... but I hate the interface there. It's hell navagating that place.

snip... nevermind change my mind again.

I think my work-around for this will be the first round of the draft in which teams have exclusivity to players that played in their organization.

Also Curt Schilling needs to come off of this list as he didn't play for the Phillies in the 1980-1990 time period. I'll add Tom Herr, Dickie Thon or Ken Howell to the list in his place if I don't hear back from you.

Just a status update. With only 10 of the 26 protection lists in there are 34 players that will enter the draft, 5 of which where "protected" by more than one team. At this rate somewhere around 120 players will be eligible in the draft, making it a 4-5 round affair. I think this will make for an interesting draft.

You can add Brady Anderson and Josias Manzanillo (if you really need the bullpen help) to the Red Sox list as well. They may want to put in a claim for Mike Boddicker to help out the rotation, too.

Without doing Bostons list yet, I'm 99% sure Brady Anderson and Mike Boddicker will be protected.

I decided to waste some of my lunch break and come up with a Toronto list:

C: Pat Borders, Ernie Whitt
IF: John Olerud, Fred McGriff, Cecil Fielder, Damaso Garcia, Kelly Gruber, Tony Fernandez, Rance Mullinks
OF: George Bell, Lloyd Moseby, Jesse Barfield, Al Oliver, Mookie Wilson
P: Jimmy Key, John Candelaria, Doyle Alexander, Mike Flanagan, Tom Henke, Duane Ward, Mark Eichhorn, Al Leiter, David Wells, Phil Niekro, Bud Black

Pretty slim pickings, but some talent that got cups of coffee. Also, Dave Stieb would automatically be protected, since he was on Toronto in 1980, and didn't leave until 1992, correct?

Correct about Stieb. Looks like a pretty solid list to me. 11 or more of those players will end up as free agents. Which isn't all bad since the more you have the higher the draft selection.

Looks like some folks are still putting together teams rather than a "best 25".

Here are the Houston Astros. It is very heavy on pitching. Not a lot of hitters to choose from. Some of the hitters you may associate with the Astros were actually not very good.

1. Joe Sambito
2. Luis DeLeon
3. Larry Andersen
4. Nolan Ryan
5. Ken Forsch
6. Bill Dawley
7. Mike Scott
8. Joaquin Andujar
9. Rick Rhoden
10. Jerry Reuss
11. Bob Knepper
12. Vern Ruhle
13. Dan Schatzeder
14. Bob Forsch
15. Danny Darwin
16. Eric Rasmussen
17. Bill Gullickson
18. Luis Gonzalez
19. Joe Morgan
20. Craig Biggio
21. Ken Caminiti
22. Cesar Cedeno
23. Jose Cruz
24. Dan Driessen
25. Buddy Bell

Others considered:
Don Sutton
Aurelio Lopez
Joe Niekro
Randy Moffitt
Steve Henderson
Mike Ivie
Jerry Mumphrey
Kevin Bass
Bill Doran
Johnny Ray
Jeffrey Leonard

I'm surprised hitters like Ray, Leonard and Bass missed the cut. But, I think we have had the same thought process, heavy on pitching and choosing only the cream of the crop for hitters. Thanks for the help Jcrmoon42.

I would have expected they would as well, but they just weren't as good as I remembered them being. Ray is remembered because of his good rookie season. He had good contact, but was pretty underwhelming overall. Leonard is remembered for going "flaps down" and being a surly character. However, other than a couple of decent years in San Fran, he was a pretty ordinary hitter for a corner outfielder. Kevin Bass had a couple of good years with the Stros, but overall he was largely a platoon player with pretty ordinary numbers.

I love One Dog, but he was a speed and defense guy without much else. There were better pitchers than Bannister, but he is probably also selected by the Mariners, giving the Sox a better draft spot.

I figure if I'm going to select a player who can't be protected by any other team, he'd better be very, very good, because I'm basically giving up draft spots to get him. With the draft as full as it is going to be, that doesn't make a lot of sense unless the guy you are keeping is a difference maker.

Those are my thoughts as well. Spot on with all three of the above posts.

Might have missed a few, but that's what i got. Thought it would be more imprssive than this.

Would Grace and Maddux need to be on the list, since they didn't play for any other team in the 80's?

Dear Keyser Söze-
Grace and Maddux would need to be on the list. However, Martz would not as he played on the Cubs in 1980 and never played for another team.

Here are some players to consider for that spot:
Rick Reuchel
Pat Tabler
Steve Henderson
Jody Davis
Ron Cey
Keith Moreland
Gary Mathews
Bob Tewksbury

Also I suggest removing Terry Francona, Joe Turdradi and Larry Bowa. Had these guy not been managers they would not have made your list I think.
