Manager Names

I noticed that the manager names seem to be fictional. Are their tendancies set up based on the real managers?

When did you download it? I'm not a rookie when it comes to this stuff so I'm pretty confident the link I'm downloading is broken (post March 30th). I downloaded it in full three times, and each time it gets an error when I try to unzip.

Padres, can you provide the link to the file prior to March 30th? I don't need the images and that seems to be the corrupted part that stops my unzipping.

Just downloaded and unzipped from Padres as well. No problems at all.

And, CBL, one question I didn't see in the readme. What did you do with ballpark factors?

Edit: Nevermind, I reread the readme. Sorry

Ballpark Factors

First, I would like to offer my sincerest thanks and offer my appreciation for this set. It's a ton of work to do these now (post 6.5) and those of us who have been around a while know that this is a high quality effort.

So, and I'm not trying to start problems, rather just pointing out, because this is about a half hour's worth of work for anyone wanting to make the changes.

But, for the most part the ballpark factors are inaccurate. Haven't looked at the Gambo file that these are base on, but I'll give you two quick examples which should make my point.

First is Houston. A huge deep CF area that is a triples machine. According to the newest Bill James Handbook, the triples factor for Minute Maid Park for seasons '05-07 is 1.13 yet the Gambo factor in this set is .934. A big difference and one that will have a noticeable effect.

Second is Philadelphia. In two seasons, Citizen's Bank Park has gained a deserved reputation as a band box and the Bill James Handbook backs that up with a HR factor of 1.33 (1.3 for LHB, 1.38 for RHB). Certainly this is only two seasons worth of data, but this is a far cry from the .986 (LHB) and .992 (RHB), and again the type of difference that will have a noticeable effect.

Again, my point here is to simply point out what is an easily correctable (by users) issue, for those who are either a) particular about these things, or b) would use this as a point of criticism or complaint.

Thanks again, CBL, this is a superior effort. Quite possibly the best roster set (no disrespect intended toward anyone) of the post 6.5 era in my opinion. I've been messing around with it since the small file was released and it's a blast and the results are fabulous.

I found it only in the original release, I don't believe that it's in the newest big file.

It's not, however, a lot different that what CBL states at the very beginning of this tread.

Hey fellas - yea I just noticed the readme is in the small file, but not in the mamoth file. Here it is....

CBL 2008 Spring Training Roster Set Version 1.0

Good evening fellas,
It’s been several years since I last dabbled in the roster-creating market, however due to re-newed interest and available time, I now present to you CBL 2008 Spring Training Roster Set Version 1.0. The major step with this roster set is how I used the OOTP engine to generate over 1,800 ratings based on PECOTA projected stats. The short-version is I merged the Baseball Prospectus 2008 PECOTA spreadsheet into the 2007 Lahman DB; I then imported the database as a 2008 league. OOTP recognized the PECOTA stats as the player’s real 2008 stats and rated them accordingly. I went back and re-touched nearly all players to ensure ratings / talents appear to be in-line with real MLB. The roster set is as of Spring Training, and at this time I do not intend to re-release once we reach MLB Opening Day.

Each MLB team has three minor league teams; please note actual minor league affiliations are not included (i.e. Texas League, Southern League, etc).

Features:
• Over 1,800 players rated based on PECOTA stats for 2008.
• Roster will include ALL NRI’s invited to Spring Training. (most will be at an appropriate minor league level)
• The History of MLB pre-2007 is included!
• REAL 2008 MLB Schedule (created by GMO on the OOTP boards)
• Over 330+ prospects created based on each team’s top 11 as per Baseball Prospectus; star system is based on Baseball Prospectus scouting reports for each prospect.
• Injured players as of before the start of Spring per CBS Sportsline.
• Market based structure – larger market teams will have more money available.
• Injury Proneness based on Ron Shandler’s Baseball Forecaster 2008; player’s medical history available up to 5 years back. What this means – Darin Erstad and Ken Griffey Jr are more prone to leg injuries, Mark Prior and Carl Pavano more prone to arm injuries, etc. The higher frequency of injuries to the same location of the body is reflected by a higher # of injury proneness (scale is up to 200).
• MLB & Minor league stadium park factors based on Gambo’s spreadsheets.
• Accurate pitcher’s velocity & repertoire for a majority of major league pitchers and top prospects.
• Misc data / insights gathered from USA Today Sports Weekly, Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus, mlb.com, milb.com, baseball-reference.com.

What is NOT included:
• Actual Jersey #’s
• Actual salaries / contracts / service time; I believe OOTP does not know how to properly handle 200+ million dollar payrolls. Instead, I’ve reduced the average salary down, thus larger market teams will still have more $ available compared to smaller market teams. I let OOTP determine salary amounts based on talent level.
• Several Prospects may not have their correct height / weight. I’ll update these as I catch them (most are at a default 5’10”, 190lbs).

CBL Judgment Calls
There are a few items in the roster set I’ve deemed “judgment calls” such as
• Pitcher Endurance set to normal – this will result in more IP and more CG from starting pitchers that real life MLB. With Endurance set to low, it seems to me the entire MLB pitching staffs are always tired, even with 12 men.

Steps to Perform before playing games:

• Go to league game setup
o Set all teams to computer control
o Select the franchise you want to run
o Set Allow AI to make roster changes
o Run computer manager on all computer controlled teams. Most teams will release the excess players in the minors to free agents.
o Ghost players in minors is selected by default
• Go to Global settings
o You can enable scouting & coaches if you like (your choice)
o Player / Picture options – make the choices you wish here as well.
o AI Options – most are defaults – again, change anything if you want.

Spring Training –
• Current default is to have Spring Training games – however if you elect to run Spring Training a few teams (OAK, BOS, ATL, WAS) may have 1 or 2 Spring Training games scheduled on a same day as a regular season game.

Sim results & notes
• Overall, I am happy with the long term results from the file. I’ve noticed the first year homerun & RBI totals are down slightly, but pick up the following seasons. I hope you enjoy the roster set for many years to come!

t-bone thanks for the positive feedback.

We'd have to ping Gambo to ask about the stadium ratings and how they were derived - they are directly from his fabulous spreadsheet. Hope you guys are enjoying the set- I am now entering spring training using the roster set.

Minor problem i've been having that i guess isn't specifically to do with the roster but i've never had it before and it has cropped up since i started using the roster.

Everytime i manage a game, the place where the picture of the ballpark is supposed to be is completely black. You can see the players but there is no ballpark background!

If anyone could help me fix this I would sincerely appreciate it!

Thanks in advance for any help!

Thanks, but I'm completely confused right now. Even this file doesn't work. I've downloaded and extracted other files since then, and they've all worked.

What are you using to unzip the file? I'm using Winrar and it's downloading and extracting just fine.
