1909 - MLB Year In Review
After falling to third place in 1908, the Boston Doves returned to the top of the National League. The team was led at the plate by Harry Wolter, who finished first in the NL in RBI and stolen bases, and by Burt Shotton. Burt Shotton was the first player in the modern era to bat .400. For this feat, he was awarded the league's Outstanding Batter Award. The Doves' mound corps was once again headed by their ace, Chief Bender. Bender won 27 games, leading the NL, and also led the league in ERA with 1.61 while finishing second in strikeouts. Bender was chosen the league's outstanding pitcher. Boston headed into September 10 games ahead of the second place Cardinals, then clinched the title with 10 games to go.
St.Louis was lead by pitcher Red Donahue, who finished with 23 wins. The Chicago Cubs finished a distant third, 12 games behind the front running Doves, and were led by Ed Konetchy and Duffy Lewis, who paced the NL in home runs with 9. Mordecai Brown finally had a good season as he finished with 25 wins, enough to finish second in the league. The Philadelphia Athletics continued their domination over the rest of the American League by winning their third straight title. However, this time the margin was only 3 games. Philadelphia led the second place Boston Red Sox by 8 games and the third place St.Louis Browns by 9 games heading into September. With ten games remaining, St.Louis was gone but the Red Sox had gotten hot and only trailed by 3 games. Boston got to within 2 games but were eliminated on the next-to-last day of the season. The Mackmen were once again led at the plate by Ty Cobb and Frank Baker. Ty Cobb was awarded the AL's Outstanding Batter Award as he led the league in average (.368), finished third in RBI (74) and finished second in runs scored (94). Boston finished second, 3 games behind, and was led at the plate by Tris Speaker, and on the mound by their outstanding rookie, Ray Collins. Collins finished with a league-leading 26 wins and was awarded both the AL's Rookie of the Year Award and the AL's Outstanding Pitcher Award. Institutions came to pass in 1909. Harry C. Pulliam's six-year reign as president of the National League came to an end. Forbes Field in Pittsburgh and Shibe Park in Philadelphia opened their gates for the first time. The World Series again did not provide much excitement as Eddie Plank won two games in leading the Athletics to a 4 games to 1 world championship over the Doves. The Series was anticipated to be a showdown between Ty Cobb of the Athletics and Burt Shotton of the Doves but it was Eddie Plank of Philadelphia who stole the spotlight with his two complete game victories over a Boston lineup that also featured George Stone, another great hitter besides Shotton. Captain Carl,
Love the dynasty. Question for you: How do you go about posting your links for stats, free agent listings, etc. such as below? Is it easy to do? Does it require any coding? Thanks! Quote:

I jotted them all on a piece of paper and then typed them in here. There is no coding needed.

1910 - MLB Year In Review
U.S. President William H. Taft opened the 1910 baseball season by throwing out the first ball. His actions served to mark baseball as the "official" national pastime and advanced the state of the political art into the 20th century. Those in attendance, including Vice President James Sherman, hailed the event. The Washington pitcher responded to the turnout of the robust chief executive by tossing a complete game victory over the Philadelphia Athletics. Taft's presence, though, was not an omen of prosperity for the Senators, who finished sixth with a 65-89 record.
The Philadelphia Athletics bounced back from that defeat and played winning ball all season long. It wasn't meant to be for the mackmen. Heading into September, Philadelphia trailed the Boston Red Sox by 3 games and it stayed that was for all of the month. In early October, the Athletics got to within 2 games with 3 to play but were eliminated the next day as the red hose held on to gain the American League pennant. The Red Sox were led by the bats of Larry Doyle and Tris Speaker and on the mound by pitchers Ray Collins and Smokey Joe Wood. Larry Doyle led the league in average (.311) and runs (110) and also finished third in RBI with 95 and was rewarded by the league with the Outstanding Hitter award. The second-place Athletics once again was led by their ace pitchers Eddie Plank and Rube Waddell. Waddell was awarded the league's Outstanding Pitcher award for leading the league in both ERA (1.76) and in wins (26). The American League did not hold a monopoly on close races as the National League did them one better. Heading into September, the Philadelphia Phillies led the second-place Boston Doves by 1.5 games, with Cincinnati 5.5 games back and St.Louis 7. As the teams headed into the home stretch, the Phillies lead was now 1 game over Boston and 2 over St.Louis. The Cardinals bowed out, but not until the next-to-last day, and the Doves tied the Phillies. Philadelphia and Boston remained tied and the Doves defeated the Phillies in a one-game playoff to capture the NL's title. Boston was led by Rookie of the Year Armando Marsans, who finished 3rd in the league in average, batting .344, and by the pitching of Jack Powell. Powell led the NL in ERA and wins and was awarded the league's Outstanding Pitcher award. The St.Louis Cardinals, who finished in 3rd place 1.5 games behind the winning Doves, were led by the bats of Honus Wagner and Ty Cobb, who they signed as a free agent. The Georgia Peach rewarded the Cardinals management by leading the league in batting (.378) and was awarded the league's Outstanding Hitter award, making him the first player in history to win the award in each league. The Boston Red Sox, who won a record setting 101 games during the regular season, quickly disposed of their intra-city rivals, 4 games to none, in the World Series to win their first world's championship. 1911 - MLB Year In Review
Fate was not kind to the New York Giants. During the early part of April, there was a fire at the Polo Grounds and during the late part of April, star pitcher Christy Mathewson was lost for at least half of the season due to bone chips in his elbow. The Giants were invited by the Highlanders to play there home games there but the hitters struggled and New York collapsed and finished in 7th place. Meanwhile in Chicago, the Cubs got off to a hot start behind the 1-2 pitching combination of George Bell and Three Finger Brown. Brown won 24 games but Bell outdid him by winning 27 games, leading the NL, and also led the league in ERA with 2.67. Wildfire Schulte led the attack as he led the league in home runs with a tremendous total of 18. At the beginning of September, Chicago led the defending NL champion Boston Rustlers by 7.5 games and 8 games over Philadelphia. The Rustlers collapsed while the Cubs went on and clinched the NL title with a week and a half to go. Philadelphia and St.Louis tied for second, 10 games behind, as the Cardinals' hitters got red hot, especially Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner. Ty Cobb finished second in the NL in average (.391) and home runs (11), while leading the league in runs scored with an amazing 140 and in stolen bases with 100, both new major league records.
In the junior circuit, the Boston Red Sox caught fire and ran off to a 14-game lead as the calender hit September. The Red Sox were able to withstand a late charge by Cleveland as Cleveland had cut the lead down to 8 games with ten games remaining. Boston held on and clinched it's second straight league title with a week remaining. The Red Sox were led by the bat, and feet, of Tris Speaker as he captured the AL's Outstanding Hitter award with an average of .323 to go along with 9 homers, 87 ribbies, and a league leading 61 stolen bases. On the mound, leading the way was Smokey Joe Wood, who won the league's Outstanding Pitcher award by capturing the pitcher's triple crown. Wood led the league with 26 wins, an ERA of 1.90 and 237 strikeouts. The Cleveland club finished in second place, 9 games behind, thanks to Burt Shotton, who they purchased in a trade during the offseason. Shotton hit a league leading, and new major league record, average of .406. Fred Beck hit a new major league record of 19 home runs and drove in a league leading 109 runs to help Shotton in leading the Cleveland attack. During the World Series, the Boston Red Sox jumped to a 2-0 start by taking both games in Chicago, then took games four and five to win their second straight world's championship behind the pitching of Burt Keeley. Keeley was acquired in a late season trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates and won games one and five of the series. During the 1910 season, both leagues introduced a new "jack-rabbit" ball. Although it only showed a modest increase in runs an home run production the first season, in 1911 the change showed a much bigger increase as six major league hitting records fell, not counting Ty Cobb's base stealing record. 1912 - MLB Year In Review
The Boston Red Sox, who were the defending title holders in the American League, moved to a new American League record for victories - 105 - and their third straight AL pennant. The Sox played steady ball all year and avoided any slumps in finishing 22 games ahead of the second place Cleveland club. An excellent attack centered around outfielders Tris Speaker and Bob Bescher, and the arms of Ray Collins and Smokey Joe Wood, who proved to be one of the aces of the staff by recording 24 wins and a league-leading 240 strikeouts, second in the majors to whiff master Walter Johnson of the Brooklyn Dodgers. George Suggs debuted in high fashion as he finished tied for first in wins (26) and finished in third in ERA with 2.51 as he copped both the league's Outstanding Pitcher and Rookie of the Year awards. The Red Sox victory was even more pleassant in light of the fact that Fenway Park opened it's doors for the first time in April and by October it had an American League pennant flying high over its freshly painted walls. The Cleveland ballclub, who finished second in 1911, finished second again behind the mighty bat of Shoeless Joe Jackson, who led the junior circuit in average (.377) and finished third in home runs (11) while being awarded the league's Outstanding Hitter award.
In the senior circuit, the race was tight among five teams as September rolled around with Philadelphia leading by 2.5 games over St.Louis, 5 games over Cincinnati, 6 games over Chicago and 7.5 games over Boston. By the time the last week rolled around, the Phillies and the Cardinals were separated by only 1 game and with 2 games left, they were tied. The two teams stayed that way and a one-game playoff had to be held, which was won by Philadelphia by the score of 8-5. The Phillies' attack was strengthened over the past winter with the addition of free agent shortstop Honus Wagner. Behind Wagner and Amos Strunk, Philadelphia had plenty of offense and the mound staff, led by Jack Quinn and Ed Hughes, was good enough to carry the Phillies to their first National League pennant. Ty Cobb and John Titus, who had set a new major league record for home runs with 22, were the one-two punch that carried St.Louis to the second place finish. During the World Series, the Boston Red Sox jumped out to a 3 games to 0 lead by the scores of 8-2, 11-4 and 8-1. Philadelphia, behind Wagner and Strunk, rallied from the deficit and tied the series at three games apiece by the scores of 6-4, 7-3 and 5-2. In game seven Ed Hughes and Smokey Joe Wood fought in a pitcher's duel that ended up tied after nine innings, 3-3. In the 10th inning, Honus Wagner drove in what proved to be the winning run with a sacrifice fly and George Liebhardt came in to shut the door and give the Phillies their first world's championship.
