Ryan Smyth is an Islander.

I'd love to see Scott Gomez and Ovechkin on the same line and it could happen.

I think EDM got a first round pick and Robert Nilsson and another player in return. That is effectively THREE (3) NYI first round picks right there. Nice to know they never change when it comes to trading everyone they draft

Yep. Would cost them a pretty penny, say $6-7M? I'd go all out to get him if I was in charge of the Caps.

I was a bit more surprised by the Islanders. What do they think this trade will accomplish for them?

I guess in the NHL more than most sports, any team that makes the playoffs can get a hot goalie and get pretty far but I can't imagine this trade making the Islanders a contender.

I heard Barry Melrose saying the other day that he thinks Zetterberg might end up in Washington next year. Atleast I think he said Zetterberg, it was him or Datsyuk whichever one is a free agent.

Oh absolutely, just look at Edmonton last year.

I think this gives NYI an edge over the Leafs and Habs and if they end well they're in. Have they got enough to get through the likes of Buffalo, New Jersey and Ottawa? Who can say.

Ryan O'Marra was the other Islander with Nilsson and the first round pick to go to EDM.

They did mention that LA captain Mattias Norstrom moves to Dallas, but I don't think it was confirmed yet.

The trade gives them a big one up on the other 6 teams they're fighting with for a play-off spot.

You're right, in the NHL it's all about making the play-offs. You don't need to finish 1st or 2nd to be considered a contender. A hot goalie "and" the rest of the team getting in a groove can take you a long way.

The problem I see for the Islanders with this deal is trying to sign Smyth after the season before he becomes a UFA. They already have a lot of $$$$ tied up in Yashin & Dipietro - $12.1M which equates to slightly better than 1/4 of thier payroll room.

This is a dumb trade, period. Might be ok to have him around during the regular season, but he hurts the team in the play-offs. He sure won't provide any offense or defense, which is what you need in the play-offs.

And if you need an example, just look at Carolina. Peter Laviolette doesn't allow his players to fight. Let's see, how did that work out? Oh ya, they won the Cup with that strategy.
Agree with every word you're saying here. I'd much rather have a fourth liner like Moore who is consistent than a goon like Laroque. Just look at what the signing of Andre Roy did for the Penguins. I'm not saying Laroque is as bad as Roy, but you don't need the goon type player on an NHL team anymore. Sure you need a guy that play rough and stick up for your stars, but the guy has to be a player first and a goon second.

On another note, the Pens also added D Kwiatkowski for a fourth rounder (I guess they're giving away draft picks now) from Florida and G Schaeffer from the Sharks for a 7th round pick. I don't like the Kwiatkowski trade at all as we already have enough #5/#6 defenseman in Melichar, Scuderi, Nasredine and Cairns (if he ever comes back), so it's basically giving away a fourth round pick to clog up the roster even more. The Schaeffer trade I like as neither of the goalies in WBS have any NHL experience while Schaeffer at least has some. If Fleury or Thibault go down with an injury, then their back-up would have been a guy with 0 NHL experience. While 7 games isn't much, at least it's something.

Yeah. It could also be absolutely nothing, and it can even be detrimental to the team if Big Bert does something monumentally stupid again.

With Yashin 'leading' the troops? Hmm... how does a big 'NO' sound for an answer?
