...and it was IN Colorado! But seriously, we're not the Jacks of old. We might even make it to .500!

I'd like to see you do that. It's been quite a while since you decided to start rebuilding. About time it starts to pay off!

Team Record: 33-69
Sim Record: 1-8

Games
7/21 - 2-1 loss @ Utah - Christopher Baker hits his 4th homerun of the year and Chet McKie allows just 1 run in 7 innings (on 5 hits). Too bad our bullpen (the combination of MacKenzie and Stier) gave the game away in the 9th.
7/22 - 6-0 loss @ Utah - Oscar Oakley had 2 of our 5 hits to raise his average to a massive .198. Christopher Steelman get wrecked again, dropping his 13th game of the season.
7/23 - 10-1 loss @ Washington - We just got walloped! Acevedo only went 3 innings, but we couldn't pitch. We couldn't hit. Although, we did turn 3 double plays (but that usually is a bad thing).
7/24 - 7-1 loss @ Washington - I'm going to focus on the positives. Ummm... Oscar Oakley scored our only run and had a stolen base. Ward Chee had 2 innings of no-hit relief.... and that about covers the positives.
7/25 - 3-0 WIN @ Washington - Paul Long is really starting to come into his own (7 IP, 5 hits, 0 runs, PoG). Vin Koenig goes 2-4 with a run and an RBI.
7/26 - 2-0 loss @ Wisconsin - One day we shut out the best team in baseball, the next day the 2nd best team shuts us out. We get 5 hits (2 each by Mingo and Carmona, Oakley got the other) and McKie pitches 6 shut out innings. But Souza allows a homerun in the 7th which iced it for Wisconsin.
7/27 - 5-3 loss @ Wisconsin - Richard Jerkins hit 2 solo homeruns and James Walsh added 2 hits, but Steelman allowed a career high number of hits (12) in 7 innings along with all 5 of Wisconsin's runs.
7/28 - 4-3 loss @ Wisconsin - Diaz went 3-4 with a homerun (in the top of the 9th) and 3 RBI. Acevedo pitched solidly, but just not solidly enough for our offense (7 IP, 9 hits, 3 runs).
7/29 - Off Day
7/30 - 4-2 loss @ Kansas - Paul Long loses his 10th game of the season (7 IP, 7 hits, 3 ER). James Walsh had 2 hits.

So even though we went 1-8 this sim, I'm not too down on my team. After all, we played 7 games against the 3 best teams in the GEL (Washington, Wisconsin, Kansas respectively). This sim was about what I expected.

Washington is on track for the best season ever in the NPBL. And they are actually 6 games worse than their pythagorean record.

Both Long and McKie have been very solid. If we had an offense, they'd have a few more wins. Steelman, Acevedo, and O'Parra have been getting crushed recently though. Maybe I should try someone from the minors to give them a shot (like Acevedo was given a shot)?

The trading deadline comes up next sim. I wouldn't be surprised to see Chee and/or Briscoe gone by then. I'm surprised I haven't gotten more of a bite on Stier.

As a note... the only untradeable on my team (Paul Long) has only allowed 7 earned runs (8 runs) in his last 7 games. I'm liking this guys potential as he hasn't yet maxed out his ratings (and he's 22!).

Koenig is quietly putting up some decent numbers. Nothing spectacular, mind you, but very decent. He's older, which is the only reason why I don't think he'll be involved in any trades this weekend. James Walsh might be gone. If he does happen to go, it's going to be a sad day for the Rams.

Sigh... Ross Lange has dropped down to being the 57th best prospect in the league. Bummer!

Schuh, Hennen, and Massengill are looking like they will be ready to contribute next year. I'll probably bring them up at the end of the year to see what they can do. But rest assured. All three will be in the majors next year.

Speaking of getting a shot at the majors, Salvatore Perez is pretty close. I really hate to rush pitching, but I could see him in the rotation at the beginning of next year. I probably won't push him this year as he's only 20.

When is Paul Long going to drop off my "Top Prospect" list? He's started 55 major league games in his career already. I think it's time we stop calling him a prospect.

Yeah we actually made it to 51-51 this sim, our first time at/above .500 this late since 2014. OUCH.

And on the Long/Prospects' List thing, Yuda and I have come to the conclusion that they stay on until 2 years of service time is accrued, so he should be off it in a month.

Good.

If he isn't eligible for the Rookie of the Year Award, then I don't really want him on my prospects list.

Right before the trade deadline, we decided on a move that we felt would benefit our team more in the long haul. See for yourself:

Virginia sends:

IF John Tolerton
2022 1st round draft pick

Colorado sends:

C James Walsh
2022 4th round draft pick

So what does this mean for us? Well, we don't have our catcher who has been one of our best hitter this year. He's 28 years old. I figure that we aren't going to be really ready to compete for another 3-5 years. That would put him in the 31-33 year old range. It's about that time that catchers start to deteriorate. I decided the draft pick was more valuable to me at this point.

John Tolerton is a 24-year old second baseman. He might see some time in the future, but will never be "the future" at second base. He's just not that good. Basically, this deal is Walsh for a 1st rounder.

How are you going to fill that hole behind the plate?
It's going to be tough. Walsh was a 4th round (which is the last round of our drafts) draft pick back in 2014. He developed like crazy. I never thought he'd be this good.

Enter Robert Long, our 4th round pick the following year. I drafted him because we had ZERO depth at catcher at the time. In fact, that's why I gave him the nickname "Tanocito". It's an acronym standing for "There Are No Other Catchers In The Organization." If/When Lange gets ready to play, he'll step right in, but for now, the catchers job belongs to the one, the only, our 4th round pick from 2015, Robert "Tanocito" Long.

Team Record: 36-76
Sim Record: 3-7

Games
7/31 - 7-6 loss @ Kansas (13 innings) - MacKenzie gives up 3 hits, and the crucial winning run, in the last 1.1 innings to let this one slip away. Long didn't get a hit, but he did steal a base and score a run (both career firsts). Jerkins went 2-6 with 2 RBI.
8/1 - 10-0 loss @ Kansas - We only managed 5 hits (2 by Jerkins, one of which was the teams lone extra base hit (a double)). Steelman and Divell both get the crap kicked out of them.
8/2 - Off Day
8/3 - 2-1 loss vs New Mexico - Acevedo and Chee both pitch well, but the offense doesn't do anything. Mingo had two hits, Diaz hit a solo-homerun, and Oberlin had a single. That was our entire offensive output today.
8/4 - 4-2 WIN vs New Mexico - With Long on the mound (7 IP, 8 H, 1 R), and facing one of the three worst teams in the league, we pull this one out. Warner (2-run HR), Diaz and Biel each had 2 hits.
8/5 - 3-2 loss vs New Mexico - Koenig went 3 for 3, but it wasn't enough. This wasted a great effort by McKie, who went the distance in this one (9 IP, 7 hits, 3 ER).
8/6 - 3-2 WIN vs Illinois - I don't even remember the last time Steelman won a game. He pitched really well in this one (7.1 innings, 9 hits, 2 R). But the player of the game was Leandro Mingo with his 2 hits and 2 RBI (one was a 2-run triple). Bonus note: "Tanocito" Long went 2-3 with a run scored (and a walk).
8/7 - 9-1 loss vs Illinois - Lines of the game: O'Parra (2 IP, 5 ER), MacKenzie (3 IP, 2 ER), Souza (2 IP, 2 ER), Suggs (2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER). Mingo, Jerkins, and MacLaughlin each had 2 hits.
8/8 - 5-2 loss vs Illinois - Mingo had a 2-run double and Koenig and Jerkins provided 2 hits a piece. Acevedo got a little roughed up, and is still searching for that first win.
8/9 - 5-1 loss @ Minnesota - We've faced David Echegaray a couple times this year (I think we are 1-1 against him), but he out-dueled Long as was victorious this time, picking up his 300th win of his career (and also 10th of the season). Fact: Echegaray was drafted by the Rams with the 3rd pick in 2002. He was then traded for a whole bunch of guys who never equaled the success that David had. Mutsuhito went 3-4 in this one for us as well.
8/10 - 6-3 WIN @ Minnesota - All good things! McKie went 6 innings giving up 1 run on 3 hits to pick up the W. Kyle Warner went 2-3 (2 R, 4 RBI) with a 2-run homerun. Robert Long had a double and a triple.

Jerkins has a big hole to dig out of, but he had a pretty decent sim.

Robert Long is going to be our catcher for a while. Might as well get used to him behind the plate. You HAVE to love his nickname though (Tanocito)! I know I do (see above).

Just something for you all to chew on for a bit. I just crunched a few numbers (as I am at work... and what else am I going to do with my time?) and found out the average age of my team.

Average Age of the Colorado Rams as of 8/11/2021 - 32.04 years

Average Age of our Position Players - 31.69 years
Average Age of our Pitchers - 32.42 years

Average Age of our Starting Pitchers - 28.20 years
Average Age of our Relievers - 35.04 years

Our bullpen is wicked old. We have 2 40 year olds. Our youngest pitchers in our bullpen are the trio of Chee, Briscoe, and Divell at 33 years old.

I'm willing to go on record and say that in 3 years time, you won't even recognize this team. Well, you will if you pay attention to the minor league reports I post. There is going to be a lot of turnover that will force that average age WAY down.

Someone remind me to revisit this in the future.

I'm pretty proud of it, if I do say so myself.

Team Record: 39-82
Sim Record: 3-5

Games
8/11 - 4-2 loss @ Minnesota - Steelman's record drops to 5-16. Wow, that's bad. Unfortunately, there really isn't anyone who could bump him out of the rotation. He did only give up 5 hits though while accumulating 7 K's. I think he's just gotten unlucky. Mingo had an RBI double as well as scoring a run for us.
8/12 - Off Day
8/13 - 5-4 loss @ Texas (10 innings) - Jerkins had a 2-run homerun in the top of the 9th to tie this one up, but Arnie Stier couldn't prevent the Banditos from getting two hits and the winning run.
8/14 - 4-1 loss @ Texas - Vin Koenig provided pretty much provided all of the offense with a solo homerun and a single (half of the teams hits). Paul Long gave up 4 runs on 7 hits.
8/15 - 2-0 loss @ Texas - Diaz, McLaughlin, and Long had our only hits of the day, all singles. We wasted a great start by McKie (7IP, 4 hits, 2 ER on 74 pitches).
8/16 - 7-4 loss @ Utah - Vin Koenig and Richard Jerkins provided most of the offense in this one (a combined 5-8, 3 RBI, 3 runs, 2 HR, and a walk). Steelman loses his 17th game. Anyone want to take a bet on 20 losses?
8/17 - 2-1 WIN @ Utah (12 innings) - Amos Oberlin scored on an Oscar Oakley single in the bottom of the 12th to put us up for good. Oakley also had another RBI in this game. O'Parra pitched well enough to keep us in the game. Briscoe got the win.
8/18 - 5-0 WIN @ Utah - I'll let the game's "Breaking News" tell this one: "UTAH - Alex Acevedo had an unexpectedly great performance against Utah on Wednesday, pitching a 2-hitter for his 1st shutout of the season. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Acevedo (1-4) fanned 3 and walked none, throwing 86 pitches. Vin Koenig provided Colorado with the offense Acevedo needed as he got 2 hits in 5 AB, and collecting 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 5-0." Along with getting the first win of his career, Acevedo also scored 2 runs.
8/19 - 2-1 WIN @ Utah - Paul Long set a career high for K's in a game (8) while pitching 8.1 innings of 1 run, 6 hit ball. Francisco Diaz scored a run and had an RBI.
8/20 - 8-1 loss @ California - McLaughlin and Koenig each had 3 hits, but the rest of the team could only manage 2 more. Chet McKie scored our only run while pitching well (6IP, 7 hits, 3 ER) but still giving up a career high 5 walks.

17 losses by Steelman! Chet McKie had 17 losses last year, but the Colorado Ram record for losses is by a guy named Alex Ramirez way back in 2006, with 18. I am pretty confident that Steelman will SMASH that. So much for his good start.

I'm pretty impressed with Souza's performance. 70 games with a 4-2 record? For a 40 year old? Who has been with the Rams since the leagues inception? Wow!

Just because it's a pretty cool little bit of trivia, Leandro Mingo once had 18 triples in a season (2018). The all time record for triples in a season in the NPBL is 19, by Wisconsin's Jerry Quattlebaum in 2008.

I added stolen bases and caught stealing above, just so you all have a reference for speed (Oakley, Jerkins, and Biel). Oakley is actually a member of the 30-30 club (twice). It's actually quite sad to see how far "Atomic" Oakley has fallen off this year. His AVG/OBP/OPS for 2020, 2021, and his career are as follows: 2020 - .214/.290/.699 2021 (this season) - .189/.263/.572 Career - .254/.328/.768

As an added note, Oscar Oakley is 30 runs away from 1500 runs. It will be very tough to do (as he is retiring at the end of the year), but it would be awesome for him to reach that plateau. He's 13th on the all time list right now.

Jacob Perl

Here's a little background, as the Perl story originates before I started this thread:

In April of last year, I was continuing to stockpile younger players and draft picks. I had two young pitchers (Benny Suarez and Jacob Perl) who were both pretty decent pitchers. I didn't really want to get rid of either of them, but was willing to listen to offers.

Then Ontario came up with an offer that blew me away, and I had no choice but to part with Jacob.

To this point (the middle of August) of this season, Jacob has been good. He's 12-7 with a 3.38 ERA, but that's not the story I am here to tell. He was just traded before the July 31st deadline again.

Not once, but twice...

First, he was sent off in a big deal with Kansas that netted Ontario a whole bunch of picks and young players (there was an ownership change, and he decided to sell off parts). Later that same day, he and LF Joe Colin were sent off to Tennessee for a 4 star leftfielder.

At least he is still in the Founding Fathers League... so I don't have to face him.

Team Record: 45-86
Sim Record: 6-4

Games
8/21 - 5-1 WIN @ California - Chris Steelman goes six allowing 6 hits and a run and the rest of the bullpen rocks it out (allowing just 1 hit). Diaz goes 2-3 with 2 runs.
8/22 - 2-1 WIN @ California - Vin Koenig hit a 9th inning solo homerun to put us up for good. O'Parra got the win with a beautifully pitched game (8 IP, 5 H, 1 R).
8/23 - 5-1 WIN vs Idaho - The middle of Idaho's order goes a combined 6-12, but the rest of the team can only gain one other hit off of Alex Acevedo (in a complete game effort). Oakley hit his 12th homerun of the year and Mutsuhito went 2 for 4 with a run and 2 RBI.
8/24 - 3-2 WIN vs Idaho - We extend our winning streak with a 7 inning, 4 hit, 2 run performance by Paul Long. Francisco Diaz went 3-4 and Stier picked up his 11th save of the season.
8/25 - 2-0 loss vs Idaho - Long and Koenig each had two hits, but not much else happened on the offensive end. McKie pitched well enough to win, but not well enough to stop Richard San Juan from picking up his 18th win of the season.
8/26 - Off Day
8/27 - 2-1 WIN vs Washington (11 innings) - Steelman won PoG honors for his second straight start (8 IP, 8 H, 1 R), but the hero of the day was Oscar Oakley who singled home Vin Koenig in the 11th (after he had reached on an error).
8/28 - 4-2 loss vs Washington - More of the same for our Rams. Acevedo went 4.2 innings giving up 4 runs. Koenig and Jerkins had two hits apiece.
8/29 - 5-2 loss vs Washington - Long doesn't even make it 5 innings, giving up all but one of the runs. This was too much for us to come back from. Tanocito Long was the only one to get more than one hit (one of which was an RBI double).
8/30 - 7-2 loss vs Kansas - McKie gets shelled. The good news, if there is good news, is that the top of our order (Mingo, Warner, and Koenig) combined to go 5-12 with a run and 2 RBI.
8/31 - 5-4 WIN vs Kansas (11 innings) - Richard Jerkins hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the 11th inning to end this one and crank our record in extra inning games to 10-6 (3nd best in the league). We pitched well (O'Parra) and hit well. Diaz had 2 triples, but Warner was the star of our offense with both a triple and a homerun, picking up 3 RBI in the process.

When you are more games behind the leader of the division than the amount of games your team has won, I think it's safe to say that we aren't winning much this year.

There's a nice little battle in the East, but both have playoff spots locked up.

I'm actually fairly impressed by my pitching staff. We need more strikeouts, but overall, the ERA's aren't too bad. I'd still love to get someone with 10 wins though. Long has a definite shot.

I'm also impressed wth how well Arnie Stier has been doing in the closer roll. He's used to it, of course, but I'm still impressed.

I can't tell you how excited I will be once we bring up some hitters. We have 2 guys hitting over .250, and only one of them is above .251! This next month is going to be fun. I'm going to bring up some young guys and see how they do.

Do you realize that we might go the entire season without 1 guy getting to 60 RBIs?

Also, McLaughlin got hurt last sim, and is out for three weeks. This could actually turn out to be a career ending injury because he may not be back next year (he's 38 with rapidly declining ratings).

There is our future. Part of the #1 Farm system in the NPBL. Hennen and Massengill are definitely getting a shot in the next couple of weeks, as will Herold and Perez. I'm definitely bringing some other guys up to see how they do. They may not be up for the entire month, but a whole bunch of people will get a shot.

The future is now!

Wow. I hope some of those hitting prospects pan out for you, because that 5-6-7 stretch in your lineup is terrifying. And not in the good sense of the word.

Yeah... there's good and bad news on that front. The good news is that both Oakley and Jerkins will be replaced this sim (Hennen and Massengill are finally getting a chance to start). We actually are going to have a relatively new lineup. Just off the top of my head, this sim we are going to have an entirely new outfield and 2 new infielders (along with 1 new starting pitcher). I'm giving the young guys a taste of the big time.

The bad news is that we really don't have a catcher coming up (to replace Long). I'm hoping Lange can develop into at least a serviceable starter. Of course, Lange had to have his development stunted RIGHT after I trade Walsh. BAH!

Dude, I just saw Lange's hits. That sucks. I remember really liking him in that draft. I almost wanted him with the pick I took Shenk at. It seems people in that draft are just cursed...
