Certainly no need to apologize, Jim. I appreciate your taking the time. The Negro League guys would probably be the last guys I will do ratings for anyway because they will be most difficult.
Take your time. Thanks again! GH |

This is the best site I've found for early era negro leaguers. It really gives an idea what their ratings should be rarther than just "so-and-so was really good".
http://www.i9s.org/shadowstrat/1910.cfm He has sections for players debuting from 1904 to 1921 (just substitute the year you want for the "1910" in the url). The tresclub database is good but it needs alot of editing, players often come in when they're really old amd pften at the wrong positions, alot of them also have un-realistically high ratings These sites are also really good: http://www.geocities.com/negroleaguedata/ http://www.nlbpa.com/ hope this helps |

How are you planning on coding a player such as Martin Dihigo? If you are not familiar, he was Cuban born player who excelled in playing all nine positions, he for average and power and was a strikeout pitcher. He was elected to the Cuban, Mexican and Baseball Hall of Fame.

A great site is blackbaseball.com...for the bios, they give "comparable players" It's a good guideline. GH |

ok, an update on this:
I have run 9 teams of hitters through spreadsheets and finally got the pitchers spreadsheets looking good, so I have those done for 4 teams. 3 teams have been entered into the game completely riight now (Angels, A's, Astros). The rosters are larger than I originally thought as I got added responses and some guys I had in the project I did 5 years ago who weren't named this time. The A's roster has 58 I think, the Angels have 47 and the Astros have 48. Running a quick test of the 3 teams, the A's, as expected, came out the best. The Astros were second best and the Angels third. Using the in-game modern era stats though, pitchers dominate, but I'll play with the ERA Calc as I progress with the project. One thing I've noticed...as cumbersome as this editor is, you can still enter players at a decent clip (of course, I have a base I'm working off sent to me by someone whose name I forget right now (but will get full thanks in the ReadMe!!!) So far, so good. GH |

wow...I just did spreadsheets for the Giants...that is going to be one hell of a team. Them and the Dodgers should be a great battle.
I'm going to try to post rosters to a web site as I do each team so guys can see what I have set up so far. Hopefully by the weekend. GH |

6 teams have now been entered into the game.
A's, Astros, Angels, Braves, Blue Jays, Brewers The A's seem to be the hands down best of that lot, followed by the Braves. The Brewers are, as expected, very bad. The Blue Jays, Angels and Astros are middle of the pack. I should have the Cardinals, Cubs, Dodgers and Expos done by the end of this weekend. I haven't had the chance to upload the rosters for those teams done yet, but intend to do so. GH |

update:
9 teams imported, ratings in spreadsheets for 14 teams. I've been messing with the importer Pierre did for me and Rolen's project to see if it will expedite the data entry. Right now there seems to be a problem reading some of the ratings, and Pierre is trying to figure out why (it wasn't happening with the import for me and Rolen's set). If it doesn't work, I'll do it as I've been doing it, entering guys manually (actually importing one year of them from Lahman and editing that). In the game: A's, Astros, Angels, Blue Jays, Braves, Brewers, Cubs, Cardinals, Dodgers Spreadsheets done: Expos, Giants, Indians, Mets, Mariners, Orioles (hitters only) GH |

The site has been updated with results from the simmed season. The individual player links don't work (too much to upload), but league and team batting and pitching stats are up. The minor league stuff hasn't been uploaded.
this link is for end of season stuff: http://www.geocities.com/ghenglein/End/league.htm To see the rosters before any games were played, check http://www.geocities.com/ghenglein/league.htm The first site has all the transactions under the league transactions line (not by individual team) I am definitely going to have to adjust the numbers related to age. A young guy rated already good is getting put above guys who should be starting ahead of him (i.e., the Braves used Justice instead of Aaron). Aaron is rated better, but I think I need to adjust current vs. potential numbers. There's still lots to do here, but I'm at a good starting point. I may adjust ages a bit too. EDIT: I messed up. The ratings are only there under the Brewers. I never made scouts for any other team, so there aren't ratings showing up. I'll take care of that tonight if I get a chance. Feedback is appreciated. I changed the front page to cover both projects. It's now:

I added a message book to the site so you can post comments, questions, whatever there too. I'll still be here and will answer anything here, just giving another source.

I have just found some outstanding information correlating Japan's all-time great players to the Major Leagues. By virtue of this, I have narrowed my options as to the final 2 teams in the league.
a) An expansion team from guys who can be claimed by the last 4 expansion teams and a Japanese All-Star team b) An expansion team from guys who can be claimed by the last 4 expansion teams and a Negro League All-Star team c) A Japanese All-Star Team and a Negro League All-Star Team (expansion guys either omitted or go to the next team who could claim them such as Larry Walker back to the Expos) d) A team of good guys not claimed by other teams and the expansion team (this would leave Japanese and Negro League players as free agents to be picked in a draft to stock the league's weaker teams). Combine these as you like or give alternate suggestions. Getting the data on Japanese guys has opened up some possibilities here. My fear with making a team entirely of Japan and/or Negro League All-Stars is that the team would be a powerhouse. Everyone else is the best of that franchise. Now you're taking the best of an entire league, which would mean NO weak links. Feedback, as always, is appreciated. GH d) |

Productive weekend, with the wife sick. The Mariners, Mets and Padres have been completely entered. The Orioles players have been entered but the ratings aren't complete yet. Hopefully tonight. That would make 16 teams done. I'll upload the rosters to the page when they are done so you can see them up to date.

The site has been updated. I'm not simming seasons for now, I'm just trying to get teams entered. Then I'll touch up ratings and adjust as I sim tests to get things where I want them.
As of now, 16 teams are entered. The Mariners, Mets, Orioles and Padres are the latest additions. Phillies and Pirates are the next two teams. Feedback, as always, is welcome. www.geocities.com/ghenglein/index.html Thanks! GH |

All-Time Roster Project
I think it's great that we continue to hear about an amazing "Rolens Roster" pack, but is there any kind of date committed to this project?
I, along with others, am really excited and hope that this will be ready before spring training of 2003. regards |

I'm going to adjust the ages in the end. Having so many good guys coming in at 40 (basically anyone who started playing before 1900) is driving me more crazy than I thought it would. I still want them to be older, but not to the point where Grover Cleveland Alexander gets cut. It will work like this:
Code:
Rookie Year Age 1880-1889 33 1890-1899 32 1900-1907 31 1908-1915 30 1916-1923 29 1924-1931 28 1932-1939 27 1940-1947 26 1948-1955 26 1956-1963 25 1964-1971 24 1972-1979 23 1980-1987 22 1988-1995 21 1995+ 20 Feedback, as always, is wanted. GH |
