The 2006 version is a piece of crap. I bought the damn thing. I TRIED to like it. Kept coming back, thinking maybe it was just an ADD phase I was going through.
I'm about to pester the licence bastards for about the umpteenth time for my 6.5 order ID.

The sad thing is that the person who started this thread has since left 6.51 for the garbage dump known as OOTP2006. Of course I think he is the ONLY person who posted in this thread to betray 6.51 so things are looking good. OOTP2006 has been a complete failure and 6.51 continues to dominate the baseball sim world!

My little fictional league has reached it's 20th year. My ace pitcher just eclipsed 400 wins at the age of 35 and is still on pace for at least 25 more this season and I just won my 12th championship in a row with the difficulty setting on Hall of Famer. BUT...
I downloaded the latest patch for 2006 and began playing it. I've played it more than 6.51 in the last 2 weeks. I think I'm beginning to get hooked. It did crash on me once and I lost about 2 weeks of data, but a lot of my progression was from simming anyway. I wanted to go through an entire season to see how everything worked. Now, I'm in the second season and even playing out the spring training games, making all kinds of trades and world scouting to better my last place crappy team. Worst of all, I'm having fun. Forgive me, but I have not totally abandoned 6.51 yet.

Something's are done right, and some.......well, they should be buried.

I am playing both and have been quite happy, although I have been playing 6.51 more since I was able to re-vamp my little 1 league setup into a 2 league setup to have playoffs. It only took me 20 seasons to figure it out though

I tried the demo for '06 and it was nothing but administrative work. The goals of '06 are noble, but at some point I'd like to sit down and sim a game or two. I've been playing baseball sims since FPS Baseball '94 and my joy is in building a team and simming games, not spending a week to set up a universe and learning every possible tab.

My Opinion....
which probably does 't mean much but here it is:
I have been off the OOTP boards for about 3 months and have been enjoying both OOTP 6.5 and Puresim. They both are good games and I feel that OOTP 6.5 is still a better game than Puresim. I went to Puresim mainly because this game is going to be obsolete with no or limited support. Why would SI want to have to allow Markus or SI to fix any issues with this program? The game will become obsolete and Puresim will surpass the gaming level of OOTP 6.5. The reason I like Puresim and OOTP 6.5 is the simplicity of the gaming experience. I can open the game and play without worriying about all the configurations and settings of the new game. I am a computer programmer by trade and I find the program flow and the interface confusing for the new game. I may give it a try but not sometime soon. I play fictional leagues with minimal numbers of teams and don't need to oversee a whole universe. I think the best solution for SI would have been to hire a second programmer other than Markus to learn the 6.5 game code and continue this program marketing as OOTP 7 or whatever the next version number would become for future versions and to have BM:OOTP2006 marketed for those who wanted the whole universe game which Markus would be the Main Programmer. Fix the new game so that is more user friendly with annual upgrades and to have an upgrade for the simpler game also. Sort of a OOTP and OOTP lite..... Final point is that sometimes simpler is better. I will check in once in a while but have lost a bit of interest with my OOTP gaming experience. I am glad to see others still finding value in the OOTP 6.5 game. With Catobase it is a good gaming experience. Lets see if SI does the right thing and comes out with two versions of the game. They would then satisfy both user groups. |

I purchased 2006 also, and thought it was a flop. But hey, even the Beatles made mistakes back in the 60's too. Seems like OOTP built up a good head of steam, then had to take a giant step back. Don't get me wrong, I love the game, Sometimes folks make mistakes.

Count me in as another guy who was completely overwhelmed by OOTP2006 to the point of frustration. I recently downloaded the latest patch which was supposed to have solved many of the problems but just the amount of work you need to put in to even start a league is too much for me to handle at this point. I'm having a lot of fun continuing my 6.51 league.
I downloaded the Puresim demo and gave it a brief look. A few things irked me enough that I don't want to get too involved with it. It appears the computer AI is only capable of doing 1 for 1 trades. And the MVP selection process is really wonky with the league RBI leader being given the MVP every year. If any Puresim fans want to sell me on the game, I'm all ears. Otherwise, I'm sticking with 6.5! |
