Tohoku Rakuten Ninjas 81 65 .555 3.0 82-64

Orix Buffaloes 54 92 .370 30.0 59-87
PENNANT RACES:
Chiba Lotte overcame a 2 game All-star break deficit, going 47-30 after the break, and was able to catch and pass Nippon enroute to winning the division rather easily, clinching with 5 games left in the season. The PL pennant makes up for last year's bittersweet 2nd place finish by a mere 2 games.

PENNANT RACES:
What race? The Giants had an 8 game lead at the break, and expanded it to 11 by season's end, clinching in early August with weeks left in the season. The league's best team all year did it in the off-season, making the most moves to improve their team, Yomiuri won 20 more games than last year as they clinched their 1st division title

1901 PLAYOFFS
NIPPON LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP:
Some said the championship was a waste of time, and Yomiuri proved them right, wiping the Marines out 4 games to 1 as they celebrated their 1st ever *** World Championship. Taking a commanding 3-0 lead in the series, the end was only a matter of time, and even an extra inning win by Chiba Lotte in game 4 did nothing but extend the season a few more days. In a very touching ceremony after the game, *** Championship MVP, 38yo SP Masashige Kubo (2-0, 1.67 era in 2 gs) announced his retirement, saying he wanted to go out a winner.

AWARD WINNERS

PACIFIC LEAGUE
MVP AWARD - CF Naoki Ageda (Nippon Fighters)
- 26yo / Japan - *** MVP Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 146 g - 567 ab - .398 avg - 22 hr - 136 rbi - 113 r - 6 sb - 1.070 ops
- Career Stats: 292 g - 1130 ab - .347 avg - 46 hr - 235 rbi - 225 r - 8 sb - .986 ops (int/2 yrs)
- Overview: If not for Nap Lajoie, a player who went to the USA's major leagues back on 7/30/01, Ageda would have led all of Japan in most offensive categories. As it was though, he was definitely the best hitter in the *** this year, leading all of the league in RBI, Hits, OPS & Vorp and leading the Pacific also in Batting Avg while finishing 2nd overall as he flirted with .400. He was consistent all season, winning 2 of 5 Batter of the Month awards this year and 3 Player of the Weeks in the PL. Even though his team fell flat and didn't make the playoffs, Ageda still have a marvelous season.

CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Pascual Maynez (Fukuoka Daiei Hawks)
- 26yo / Nicaragua - *** CY YOUNG Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 31 g - 31 gs - 19-7 rec - 0 sv - 2.87 era - 232.0 ip - 40 bb - 151 k - 1.06 whip
- Career Stats: 63 g - 63 gs - 31-18 rec - 0 sv - 3.15 era - 471.0 ip - 76 bb - 363 k - 1.11 whip (int/2 yrs)
- Overview: Maynez was easily the best pitcher in the PL all season, being names so at the midway point and also at the end of the season as he won his 1st Cy Young award, which is more impressive when you consider his team finished 9 games below .500. He won 27% of the Hawks games this year while leading the Pacific in ERA, Whip, Opp Avg & Vorp and tied for 2nd in wins. At only 26yo, expect Pascual to win a few more Cy Youngs before his career in Japan is over.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - CL Nobuhito Udo (Fukuoka Daiei Hawks)
- 21yo / Japan - *** ROY Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 43 g - 0 gs - 2-2 rec - 19 sv - 4.43 era - 42.2 ip - 21 bb - 39 k - 1.36 whip
- Career Stats: 45 g - 0 gs - 2-3 rec - 19 sv - 4.24 era - 51.0 ip - 26 bb - 46 k - 1.41 whip (int/2 yrs)
- Overview: Hardly a blowaway season for the best rookie in the Pacific, Udo was effective in his 1st full season in Japan and was the best rookie in a weak class in the PL. As the only rookie starting closer in the ***, Udo easily led all rookies in saves as only 2 other players even had 1. At only 21 yo, Udo's career as a closer might be over, as he is more suited as a middle reliever, however he does have a nice trophy to place on his mantle from the 1901 season.

GOLD GLOVE AWARDS:
P - Kaz Eida (Orix Buffaloes) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1
C - Ed McFarland (Chiba Lotte Marines) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1
1b - Candy LaChance (Nippon Fighters) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1

3B - John "Mugsy" McGraw (Chiba Lotte Marines) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1
SS - Shunso Matsumura (Chiba Lotte Marines) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1
LF - Tameyooshi Igarashi (Fukuoka Daiei Hawks) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1

CENTRAL LEAGUE
MVP AWARD - SS Ed "Big Ed" Delahanty (Hanshin Tiger)
- 34yo / USA - *** MVP Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 126 g - 472 ab - .352 avg - 13 hr - 66 rbi - 95 r - 31 sb - .986 ops
- Career Stats: 126 g - 472 ab - .352 avg - 13 hr - 66 rbi - 95 r - 31 sb - .986 ops (int/1 yr)
1797 g - 7452 ab - .341 avg - 93 hr - 1466 rbi - 1591 r - 398 sb - .898 ops (other/13 yrs)
1923 g - 7924 ab - .341 avg - 106 hr - 1512 rbi - 1686 r - 429 sb - .903 ops (total/14 yrs)
- Overview: Despite playing on a team 14 games below .500 and 24 games out of the playoffs, Big Ed was named the Central's MVP in his 1st season in the Japanese International league. Taking away Nap Lajoie, who was traded to the MLB in July, Delahanty led the league in OPS & Vorp while finishing in the top 5 in Avg & SB. Some people disagree with a player who hit only 9 hr and 66 rbi being named the MVP, and many thought Watanabe of Chunichi deserved the award, but Big Ed proved a non-slugger can win the most valuable player award in my baseball universe.

CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Masamune Mifune (Yomiuri Giants)
- 24yo / Japan - *** CY YOUNG Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 32 g - 32 gs - 16-9 rec - 0 sv - 2.76 era - 261.0 ip - 61 bb - 205 k - 1.15 whip
- Career Stats: 63 g - 63 gs - 34-19 rec - 0 sv - 2.87 era - 511.1 ip - 131 bb - 422 k - 1.13 whip (int/2 yrs)
- Overview: There are some around the league that believe this was a makeup from last year when Mifune deserved the award, but did not win it, as this year he was named the Cy Young while not placing on as many leaderboards. With that being sais, he has been one of the top 2 or 3 pitchers in the Japanese league since it's birth, and still had a great season serving as the Ace on the league's top team and World Champs. Leading all of the *** in IP, and the CL in opp avg while ranking among the top in ERA, wins, Whip, strikeouts and Vorp, Mifune has been the driving pitching force for the Giants and will have to do it next year without his mentor, Kubo who retired after winning the *** Championship.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - MR Tatsuzo Iwahashi (Yomiuri Giants)
- 25yo / Japan - *** ROY Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 17 g - 14 gs - 7-4 rec - 0 sv - 5.80 era - 85.1 ip - 35 bb - 62 k - 1.59 whip
- Career Stats: 17 g - 14 gs - 7-4 rec - 0 sv - 5.80 era - 85.1 ip - 35 bb - 62 k - 1.59 whip (int/1 yr)
- Overview: Even more evidence of how weak this rookie class was, a pitcher who was moved to the bullpen for the playoffs won the award. In Iwahashi's defense though, he did serve as the #5 starter for the Giants for a good portion of the season, a role he figures to be in next year. As one of the few rookie pitchers who has a major impact, he led all *** rookies in wins, IP, Strikeouts, and just about every other category, all while winning a Championship ring in his 1st season in the league.

GOLD GLOVE AWARDS:
P - Yashushi Nose (Hanshin Tiger) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1
C - Tom "Tido" Daly (Yokohama Bay Stars) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1
1b - Terumoto Baba (Yokohama Bay Stars) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1
2B - Nap "Larry" Lajoie (Hiroshima Toyo Carp) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1
3B - Jimmy Collins (Yakult Swallows) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1
SS - Ed "Big Ed" Delahanty (Hanshin Tiger) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1
LF - Yakamochi Haga (Hanshin Tiger) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1
CF - Sen Tenno (Yakult Swallows) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 2
RF - Shohei Heida (Yomiuri Giants) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1

PENNANT RACES:
In the East, Idaho Falls made it interesting, going from a 7 game easy cushion at the All-Star break to luckily clinching on the last day of the season when Billings lost to Orem, who took 2 of 3 from them to close out the year, allowing the Chukers to win their 1st division pennant despite a poor end of the season, closing out the year 3-7 in their final 10.
Eugene was the only team in the WL to make it easy, finishing with the best record in the league, as as the only +.500 team, in the Central, they were the 1st team to clinch a playoff birth in the IRL, coasting smoothly to the finish.
And then there was the West, which was the most exciting pennant race in all of the International Rookie league. In fact, 100 games wasn't enough to decide the division winner, as Aberdeen and Vancouver finished with identical 56-44 records. Aberdeen won the 1 game playoff to determine home field advantage, but the Canadians still made the playoffs as the wildcard, and were the only team in the WL to make the playoffs in back-to-back seasons.

Kannapolis Intimidators 42 58 .420 20.0 43-57
PENNANT RACES:
Auburn made it 2 division titles in a row, as the won the LL East by a healthy margin. The 5 game lead is very misleading as the Doubledays lost their final 5 games of the year after already locking up their 2nd straight pennant.
Much like the Washington League's Central, the same held true in the Lincoln as the division leader at the break Delmarva expanded their lead by season's end and was the only team over .500 in the division as they clinched easily.
Out west, it was over early as West Virginia had the best record in all of the IRL for most of the year and Asheville finished in 2nd for consecutive seasons, however this time they made the playoffs as the LL Wildcard team.
The story out West though was Lake County who completely fell apart. At 27-20 at the midway point, the Captains had the edge as the Wildcard team. But with a 20-33 2nd half, they completely fell out of contention finishing a distant 9 games back of the Wildcard spot and 15 of the division pennant.

1901 PLAYOFFS
WILDCARD:
Leaguewide, the Wildcard round was rather unspectacular as there were sweeps in every 3 game series. Wildcard Vancouver knocked out the WL's best team Eugene, while Idaho Falls crushed Aberdeen. In the LL, the Power overpowered division rival Asheville and Delmarva swept Auburn out as the League Championships were set.

LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP:
Unlike the 1st round, the LCS's both were thrillers and both went the distance. Vancouver became the 2nd Wildcard team to make the IRL World Series, as they knocked off favorite Idaho Falls in a 5 game classic. The IRL's leading slugger Leonardo Gargiola led the Canadians and won the MVP of the series as he hit 3 hr and drove in 6 runs in the 5 game series.
The Delmarva Shorebirds were the LLCS champs, knocking out the team with the best record, West Virginia in a hard fought 5 game series. Every game in the series was decided by 1 or 2 runs, and game 5 was a beauty with Delmarva winning 3-2 as they came back from being down 2-0 with 3 runs in the 8th to punch their ticket to the championship. SP Bonifaco Giral was named series MVP going 1-0 in 2 starts, winning game 1 and pitching a solid 7 innings in the game 5 clincher.

ROOKIE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP:
Vancouver's offense won out over Delmarva's pitching, as the Canadians took the championship home with them to Canada, winning the series 4 games to 2. Outscoring the Shorebirds 36 to 19 in the 6 games, Vancouver had many offensive players deserving of the MVP honors, but in the end, RF Fred Gebhart won the award, hitting over .350 in the series and driving in 9 of the 36 runs scored by Vancouver.

AWARD WINNERS

WASHINGTON LEAGUE
MVP AWARD - CF Rey Garcia (Idaho Falls Chukers)
- 19yo / USA - IRL MVP Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 100 g - 373 ab - .279 avg - 19 hr - 50 rbi - 69 r - 33 sb - .932 ops
- Career Stats: 182 g - 692 ab - .253 avg - 26 hr - 62 rbi - 110 r - 58 sb - .719 ops (minors/2 yrs)
- Overview: While not necessarily the Washington League's best hitter stats-wise, he was the best hitter on one of the best team's, and did lead his team in every major offensive category. Some might argue that that is what the definition of a Most Valuable Player is, while others might say that a player like Juan Matr or Leonardo Gargiola should have won the award as they were the league leaders. With that being said, Garcia projects to a leadoff hitter for the Angels and at 19, has a rookie league MVP under his belt.

CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Jesus Iqute (Boise Hawks)
- 25yo / Puerto Rico - IRL CY YOUNG Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 20 g - 20 gs - 13-4 rec - 0 sv - 1.76 era - 153.2 ip - 34 bb - 142 k - 0.81 whip
- Career Stats: 40 g - 40 gs - 15-6 rec - 0 sv - 1.94 era - 320.1 ip - 64 bb - 277 k - 0.88 whip (minors/2 yrs)
6 g - 3 gs - 1-1 rec - 0 sv - 8.02 era - 21.1 ip - 11 bb - 15 k - 1.97 whip (majors/2 yrs)
- Overview: The only 2 time All-star in Washington League history, Iqute is one of the best pitchers ever in the IRL. Going 7-2 after the break before being promoted to Boston, Jesus won almost 30% of Boise's games this year while leading the WL in Opp Avg and ranking on the leaderboard in ERA, wins, whip, strikeouts and Vorp.

GOLD GLOVE AWARDS:
P - Trey Horton (Idaho Falls Chukers) - IRL GOLD GLOVES: 1
C - Johnny "Noisy" Kling (Orem Owlz) - IRL GOLD GLOVES: 1
1b - Xavier Fréchette (Boise Hawks) - IRL GOLD GLOVES: 1

LINCOLN LEAGUE
MVP AWARD - 2b Cipriano Vildesola (Asheville Tourists)
- 24yo / Dominican Republic - IRL MVP Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 69 g - 269 ab - .401 avg - 3 hr - 33 rbi - 42 r - 8 sb - .984 ops
- Career Stats: 69 g - 269 ab - .401 avg - 3 hr - 33 rbi - 42 r - 8 sb - .984 ops (minors/1 yr)
17 g - 16 ab - .062 avg - 0 hr - 1 rbi - 1 r - 0 sb - .180 ops (majors/1 yr)
- Overview: Despite only playing 2/3 of the season in the IRL before being called up to the MLB Giants, and therefore not qualifying on the leaderboards, it's tough to argue with a .400 hitter as league MVP when the next best was only .309. Although Vildesola really struggle in the bigs, last year's 10th rd draft pick has a bright future as he already has proved he is a quality hitter. He just needs more time in the minors to hone his craft before being called back up to the majors.

CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Fidel Sucilla (Auburn Doubledays)
- 26yo / USA - IRL CY YOUNG Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 21 g - 21 gs - 13-4 rec - 0 sv - 1.39 era - 168.0 ip - 28 bb - 71 k - 0.94 whip
- Career Stats: 35 g - 35 gs - 19-9 rec - 0 sv - 1.89 era - 272.0 ip - 47 bb - 122 k - 0.99 whip (minors/2 yrs)
7 g - 3 gs - 0-2 rec - 0 sv - 3.86 era - 25.2 ip - 18 bb - 8 k - 1.75 whip (majors/2 yrs)
42 g - 38 gs - 19-11 rec - 0 sv - 2.06 era - 297.2 ip - 65 bb - 130 k - 1.05 whip (total/2 yrs)
- Overview: Despite not making the All-star team, Fidel was one of the top pitchers in the Lincoln League this year as the ace for the division winning Auburn. Ranking on the leaderboard in ERA, Wins and Whip, he had a very successful season before being promoted to the Dodgers where he also pitched well. With a 0.00 era in 7.2 ip, he projects as a long reliever for LA next season. Thought was Chan Manzanaras was the front runner for the Cy Young, but Sucilla wasn't a bad choice.

GOLD GLOVE AWARDS:

MWL - 1901 Pre-Season Report

1901 MEXICAN WINTER LEAGUE SEASON PREVIEW
(Report Date - 10/1/01)

LEAGUE PREVIEW

Code:
1900 STANDINGS

Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec
Culiacan Moths 0 0 .000 - 0-0
Guasave Hippies 0 0 .000 - 0-0
Hermosillo Victorians 0 0 .000 - 0-0
Mazatlan Black Hawks 0 0 .000 - 0-0

Obregon Orangemen 0 0 .000 - 0-0
Team To Watch: Mexicali Leopards
- The Leopards look like the team to beat in the MWL this year. While having a quiet off-season, their team is still very stacked. The pitching is led by Cy Young contender Al "Smiling Al" Orth but also features 2 other All-star caliber SPs in Quirce Gurule & Jeronimo "Turf" Compas. Honest John Anderson leds their offense and is capable of hitting well over .350. Jim Verndon bats behind him in the cleanup spot and is one of the most powerful hitters in all of Mexico and with those 2 anchoring the lineup, Mexicali should have plenty of offense to support their excellent staff.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Vic Willis (CUL)
- After an outstanding off-season of improvement, Willis is easily the best pitcher in Mexico ratings wise. With his stuff improving to 7/20, his ratings now are 7/20/14 with a 20/20 endurance. At only 26 yo, he will be in his prime years for quite a few seasons and will be a force in the MWL this season.

Hitter To Watch: SS Jimmy Sheckard (HER)
- Jimmy remains the hitter to watch in Mexico with the most outstanding ratings of any player in the league and maybe in all of baseball. With a 20/20 contact, 8/20 power, 18/20 eye and 20/20 speed, at only 23yo, Sheckard is a phenominal talent. He only has 2 seasons left on his current deal with Hermosillo, then expect him to head to the US to play in the majors where his talents will be fully realized.

Rookie To Watch: 1b Chale Herrera (HER)
- The 4th overall pick in the draft easily projects to the best hitter selected in the rookie class. With potential ratings of 7 in contact, 7 in power and 7 in eye and a born leader 20/20, at only 19 yo, Chale projects to be one of the best all around hitters in Mexico although it will probably be atleast 2 years before he is starting for the Victorians.

PENNANT RACES:
In the AL East, Toronto held off Boston, Baltimore and NY in clinching their first division title. Up by 2 at the midway break, the Blue Jays stayed at the top the entire time in the 2nd half, however all 3 contending teams game them a run for their money. But in the end, Toronto was able to clinch with 4 games left in the season despite Boston having a much better Pyt record.
Detroit turned the Central into a joke, up 12 at the break, winning by 19 games, and the only team in the division over .500 and only team in the AL to win 100 games making it 2 division titles in 2 MLB seasons.
Out West, both the Angels and Rangers made the playoffs for the 2nd straight season, although they flip-flopped in the standings. Texas won the pennant this year, clinching with a week left in the year, and Anaheim won the the AL Wildcard as both teams were head and shoulders above any other team in the AL West.

PENNANT RACES:
The NL East was a strange animal this year. The defending Champs Atlanta, the Mets and the Marlins finished with the top 3 records in all of the NL. However the Braves & Mets were the class of all of baseball, finished far better than any other team in the league and both making the playoffs, with Atlanta winning the division for the 2nd straight season.
The Central proved to be the worst division in all of the majors, as .512 won the division, and the Reds clinched their 2nd straight pennant with a horrible record. 4 teams held the division lead at 1 point or another this year, as a 4 game winning streak would often push that team to the top, but in the end, Cincy's 3 game sweep of the lowly Cubs clinched the division as the Cards couldn't get it done, losing 2 of 3 to Milwaukee to close out the year even though the went into the final series of the year with the division lead.
Arizona made it 3 for 3, being the 3rd NL division winner to repeat from last year. They won their 2nd pennant despite an unimpressive 46-43 2nd half record, as even with the barely over .500 record after the break, the rest of the West all played sub .500 ball, allowing the D-Backs to clinch rather easy with 10 games left in the season.

1901 PLAYOFFS
WILDCARD:
3 of the 4 Wildcard series ended quickly as the Angels, Blue Jays and Reds all swept the Tigers, Rangers & Diamondbacks respectively, the team with the worst record winning all 3 of those series.
The 4th series was the most high profile, pitting the NY Mets against the defending champs, the Atlanta Braves, in a matchup of the teams with the 2 best records during the regular season. NY was able to knock out Atlanta 3 games to 2 making it 4 for 4 for the lower seeded teams. The trade for Nap Lajoie proved to be a big move for NY, as he outdueled George Boutte in the series, and more specifically in game 5, where Nap's 5 for 5 with 3 runs scored proved to be the distance maker in NY's 4-2 series clinching win.

LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP:
Both the ALCS & NLCS were amazing 7 game back and forth series. In the American League, Toronto made it 2 seasons in a row that the AL East division champs would represent the American League in the World Series as they beat the Angels in 7 games. SP Ben Vineyard was their top player all season, leading them, and the AL, in many pitching categories and after going 2-0 in 2 gs, allowing only 1 run in 15.2 ip, he was named series MVP.
The NLCS was a classic case of offense vs. defense. The Reds beat the Mets 4 games to 3, and in their 4 wins, pitching won out, as the Reds held NY to only 4 runs in the 4 games. When NY won, it was all about the O, outscoring Cincy 20-9 including a 12-5 win to open the series. CJ Earp won the NL Cy Young last year for the Reds, but by all account had a disappointing season, that is until the NLCS. Easily winning the MVP award, The Madman started 2 games, and threw 2 cg shutouts, striking out 17 while walking only 1 and allowing 7 hits in his 18 ip.

WORLD SERIES:
The country of Canada is in mass hysteria after Toronto won the World Series in a 7 game series over Cincy. The Blue Jays win made it a clean sweep for Canada as Vancouver also won the World Series of the Rookie league. Down 2-1 and 3-2 in the series, Toronto kept fighting and clawing back in the series before eventually winning it. Vineyard again came up huge for the Jays, throwing a gem in game 6 (8 ip, 1 er, 4 hits, 1 bb, 12 k) after losing his 1st start in the series in Game 2 and sent it to a deciding game 7 up in Toronto. 2 time all-star RF Frank Nichols got the chance he needed and hit 2 bombs in the blowout game 7 as Toronto celebrated after a 7-2 win. Nichols was named WS MVP hitting 4 homers in the series and driving in 9 while hitting a gaudy .375.

AWARD WINNERS

AMERICAN LEAGUE
MVP AWARD - RF Ron Cronshaw (Tampa Bay Devil Rays)
- 27yo / USA - MLB MVP Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 162 g - 588 ab - .354 avg - 47 hr - 146 rbi - 128 r - 3 sb - 1.145 ops
- Career Stats: 324 g - 1182 ab - .315 avg - 80 hr - 237 rbi - 233 r - 7 sb - 1.034 ops (majors/2 yrs)
- Overview: Cronshaw was the best hitter in the AL for much of the regular season, and despite being overshadowed by the NL MVP, he had a spectacular year. He led the AL in only OPS & Vorp, but that hardly tells the entire story as he finished with the 4th best Avg, and 2nd most HR & RBI in the league. The remarkable part is that he put up these numbers with not much help around him as Tampa Bay finished with one of the worst records in baseball. At 27 yo, Cronshaw has reached his prime and peaked in ratings, so expect this type of production from the MVP rightfielder for quite a few seasons.

CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Mamo "The Rat" Kirop (Chicago White Sox)
- 36yo / Lesothoania - MLB CY YOUNG Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 33 g - 33 gs - 22-8 rec - 0 sv - 2.85 era - 258.2 ip - 50 bb - 252 k - 0.98 whip
- Career Stats: 65 g - 65 gs - 40-18 rec - 0 sv - 3.45 era - 503.0 ip - 93 bb - 546 k - 1.03 whip (majors/2 yrs)
- Overview: At 36 yo, Kirop's career is on the downswing, but he proved he still had atleast 1 more dominant season in him, leading all MLB pitchers in Whip & opp Avg, showing he was the league's most difficult pitcher to hit. He led the AL in wins, while finishing 2nd in ERA and in the top 5 in K's with the best BB/K ratio. With 1 more year on his current contract, Mamo is looking to re-up with Chicago and looking to retire as the White Sox best pitcher ever in their short history.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARD - SP Jack Bracken (Boston Red Sox)

At only 20 yo, Bracken project to a future Cy Young winner and should anchor Boston's talented staff for quite some time.

NATIONAL LEAGUE
MVP AWARD - 2b George Boutte (Atlanta Braves)
- 29yo / USA - MLB MVP Awards: 1

- Career Stats: 311 g - 1192 ab - .367 avg - 94 hr - 303 rbi - 279 r - 34 sb - 1.140 ops (majors/2 yrs)
- Overview: Is there anything more that needs to be said besides, MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL TRIPLE CROWN WINNER! Boutte's season was literally off the charts when you compare it to real-life MLB's all time great seasons. Along with leading all of the majors in Avg, HR & RBI, he also led all of the MLB in Runs, OB %, Slug %, OPS, Runs Created, Vorp, Hits, Total Bases & Isolated Power...a truly remarkable feat & season.

CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Marvin Henkle (Atlanta Braves)
- 25yo / USA - MLB CY YOUNG Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 35 g - 35 gs - 22-5 rec - 0 sv - 2.73 era - 221.0 ip - 52 bb - 200 k - 1.14 whip

- Overview: Atlanta made it a sweep of the top 2 awards in the NL as the Henkle won the NL Cy Young in his 1st full season as a starter. While some might argue a pitcher on a team who had 3 20-game winners can't be the Cy Young, some might argue he wasn't even the best pitcher on his team, Marquz Fileto was, the cold truth is Henkle is the Cy Young winner and one of the top pitchers in baseball all season long. While not leading the NL in any 1 stat, he ranked in the top 5 in ERA, Wins, Whip & Vorp and as is a fixture as a full time SP for the rest of his career.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARD - LF Topsy Hartsel (Philadelphia Phillies)
- 27yo / USA - MLB ROY Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 148 g - 535 ab - .348 avg - 6 hr - 67 rbi - 109 r - 53 sb - .957 ops
- Career Stats: 148 g - 535 ab - .348 avg - 6 hr - 67 rbi - 109 r - 53 sb - .957 ops (majors/1 yr)
- Overview: After the shocking release of #1 overall pick Christy Mathewson, Hartsel became the Phillies top rookie as the 1st pick in the 2nd rd. He led all MLB rookies in OPS, Vorp & walks and led NL rookies in every offensive category except for HR. But serving as the Phillies leadoff hitter, he doesn't need to hit the longball, and the 27yo is a future All-star at LF in the NL.

1901 MEXICAN WINTER LEAGUE LEAGUE MID-SEASON REPORT
(Report Date - 11/14/01)

Hermosillo Victorians 13 20 .394 7.0 15-18

Team Spotlight: Obregon Orangemen
- Obregon has jumped out to a lead at the halfway point thanks to the MWL's best pitching staff by a wide margin. With a team era of 2.87, the Orangemen are a full 0.30 better than any other team in Mexico. The also lead all clubs in opp avg & opp ops. Offensively, it has been a struggle for Obregon, ranking in the middle of the pack in runs scored and every other batting stat, but if their pitching can keep going at it's current pace, it should be enough for them to get to the MWL Championship.

Pitcher Spotlight: SP Pueblo "Lobo" Demegrat (MOC)
- Lobo has been the top pitcher in Mexico thru the 1st part of the season depsite being the ace on a team with only 15 wins. Demegrat is tied for the MWL lead with 5 of those 15 team victories, while posting a 2.04 era (4th) and 0.96 whip (5th). He also is averaging over 8 ip per start with 57.1 ip in his 7 starts.

Hitter Spotlight: SS Jimmy Sheckard (HER)
- If only Sheckard had a little help on Hermosillo, they would definitely not be the cellar dwellars. Thru 117 ab, Sheckard is hitting .427 with 5 hr & 11 rbi and 22 sb in 33 games. Those numbers are good enough for the league lead in Avg, OPS, Hits, Vorp, Doubles, Triples, SB and walks. He is also the only player in the league hitting over .400 over with an OPS over 1.000.

Rookie Spotlight: C Vincente Herrera (MAZ)
- The 21 yo New York native, who was released from the Colorado Rockies organization in the off-season signed a 1 year deal with the Black Hawks. As their starting catcher, he is hitting a solid .292 with 20 rbi & 18 runs. He leads all rookies in every single offensive category as the rookie pool is not very deep this year in Mexico, and leads all MWL catchers in Batting Avg, RBI & runs.

PENNANT RACES:
In a short 68 game season, there are bound to be tight races for the playoffs. This year is no exception as the 2 teams that will play for the MWL Championship weren't decided until the final weekend. In the end, the 2 top teams at the midway point remained the top 2 at the end of the season and Obregon will meet Mexicali in the 1st ever Mexican Winter league championship. The Mochis finished a close 1 game out, but losing 2 of 3 to the last place Hippies to close out the season surely didn't help their bid to be in the Championship.
Rumor has it that the MWL commish is going to expand the regular season to 75 games starting next year felling as this will help both the pennant races and the statistical output in Mexico.

1901 PLAYOFFS
MEXICAN WINTER LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP:
The Orangemen were the best team all year in Mexico and they put the stamp on the season making short work of the Leopards in the MWL Championship, sweeping them 3-0 in the 5 game series. Led by their 3 8 game winners, all 3 won the only game they started in the series as Obregon dominated the series with pitching, holding Mexicali to only 5 runs in 3 games. RF Felipe "Redeye" Valenciano won the MVP as his power led the way, hitting 2 HRs in game 2 and 3 in the series, he drove in 7 of Obregon's 18 runs. The Orangemen celebrated the 1st ever MWL Title deep into the nite as players and fans created mob scenes in the streets.

1902 [league redacted] LEAGUE SEASON PREVIEW
(Report Date - 2/22/02)

LEAGUE PREVIEW

Code:
1901 STANDINGS
Pacific League

Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec
Chiba Lotte Marines 84 62 .575 - 87-59
Tohoku Rakuten Ninjas 81 65 .555 3.0 82-64
Nippon Fighters 80 66 .548 4.0 82-64
Seibu Lions 70 76 .479 14.0 62-84
Fukuoka Daiei Hawks 69 77 .473 15.0 68-78
Orix Buffaloes 54 92 .370 30.0 59-87
Team To Watch: Chiba Lotte Marines
- After their 1st Pacific League title last year, and the best combined record in the league over the 1st 2 seasons, Chiba Lotte is still the pick to win the PL. Despite losing 2 historical greats in the off-season (Cy Young via retirement, Jake Beckley via FA), Chiba Lotte replaced them with the younger SP Brickyard Kennedy, who gives them the Ace #1 pitcher the didn't have last year, and CF Takamasa Kawaii, who slides in as their cleanup hitter, bringing his 31 hr/92 rbi season avg to an already fierce lineup featuring John McGraw (.374 avg), Seika Ichimonji (23 hr) and 2 100+ rbi men in formey ROY Morihiro Katagiri & SS Shunso Matsumura.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Christy "Big Six" Mathewson (FUK)
- Mathewson was the #1 overall pick in the MLB 1900 rookie draft. Thru a stunning turn of events, he was let go by Philadelphia and landed with the Hawks. Now in his 1st full season in the ***, Christy is read to make a big impact. He only made 7 starts with Philly in the MLB but posted a 1.86 era in 48.1 ip with a 3-2 record and 33 k. He got in 3 games in relief with Fukuoka, but this year he is slotted in as the #1 SP. That says alot, since their rotation features reigning Cy Young winner, Pascual Maynez. With ratings of 9/20/16, Big Six has reached his full potential at the age of 21 yo and easily has the best combined rankings of any SP in Japan.

Hitter To Watch: 3b Tae-seon Cho (SEI)
- The 26yo South Korea native was selected to his 1st All-Star game last year and posted season stats of .282, 24 hr, 84 rbi, 80 runs in his 2nd season in Japan. This year, Cho is looking for much bigger things. Reaching his max potential of 13 contact, 13 power, 13 eye, he is a triple threat at the plate. On paper, he ranks near the top in Japan in all 3 ratings, and should greatly improve on last year's All-star season.

Rookie To Watch: SP Nobuatsu Yamamoto (NIP)
- The 9th overall pick in the draft looks like the one of the best SP prospects of the bunch. With potential ratings of 8/11/7, the 18yo out of Japan looks to have great movement on his 4 pitches and above avg stuff and control. He also posses solid enduarance (14/20) however his major lacking point is holding runners on (2/20), which could cause him some problems. He is probably atleast a year away from cracking Nippon's rotation, but he has pitched adequately this spring with a 3.00 era in 6 ip in relief.

Central League

Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec
Yomiuri Giants 90 56 .616 - 90-56 - Champs
Yakult Swallows 79 67 .541 11.0 80-66
Chunichi Dragon 70 76 .479 20.0 74-72
Hiroshima Toyo Carp 69 77 .473 21.0 73-73
Hanshin Tiger 66 80 .452 24.0 59-87
Yokohama Bay Stars 64 82 .438 26.0 63-83
Team To Watch: Yomiuri Giants
- The defending league Champs will also be considered a team to watch and while only making 1 major move in the off-season, they look to have really strenthened their lineup, acquiring 1b Jake Beckley, who has .300 potential for a very expendable middle RP and cash in a trade. He will add to a solid lineup featuring a former MVP (Shohei Heida) and 30 hr/100 rbi man Kei Nishida. But the major strength of the Giants is pitching, and they have plenty of that. With the reigning Cy Young winner (Mifune), reigning ROY (Iwahashi) and saves leader, closer Nishiyama, they have a great base to their pitching staff. The retirement of 21 game winner Masashige Kubo will hurt, but MLB imports Reyes Mayoly & Daniel Sifuentez should make up his production and then some.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Mike Ohler (HIR)
- The major cog the Carp got in return when dealing away Nap Lajoie, Ohler will open the season on the mound marking his 1st full season in Japan. It is already known Ohler is a Cy Young caliber pitcher, going 31-12 with a 2.81 era in 56 career starts with the Mets in the MLB, including going 21-8 in 1900. The question is how much he will dominate in Japan. When you compare his ratings to other SPs in Japan, it's like day and night. 15/14/16 ranks him with the #1 stuff by a large margin and in the top 10 in the other 2 rankings. And at only 25 yo, he could conceiveably improve despite maxing out his potential ratings. He made 6 starts for Hiroshima after the trade, going 1-2 with a 4.83 era but he was adjusting to playing baseball in a new league & country. He could be a .500 pitcher, but odds are more likely he will win 20+ and be walking away with the Cy Young come season end.

Hitter To Watch: SS Ed "Big Ed" Delahanty (HAN)
- Even at 35 yo and as a reigning MVP, Delahanty proved you can get better. Going from a 19 to 20 in contact and from a 6 to 8 in power, Hanshin's stud SS might improve from last year's MVP season. He did lose a step on the basebath's, dropping to an 18 in speed, but after swiping 31 last year, even a drop off to 20-25 wouldn't be that bad for Big Ed. Expect Hanshin to struggle again as they did little to improve in the off-season, but Delahanty should excel and put up league leading numbers across the board in his 2nd full season in the ***.

Rookie To Watch: C Dan O'Boylan (CHU)
- O'Boylan has the potential ratings to be one of the best catchers in all of Japan, not bad for the 5th overall pick by the Dragon. With potential ratings of 9/20 in contact and 10/20 in power, as well as gold glove caliber defense and team leader quality, he looks like a sure-bet *** star down the road. At 21 yo, he will likely start the year on the reserve roster, but currently he is penciled in as the #3 catcher on the depth chart so an injury or demotion here or there and Dan might see time as early as this season for Chunichi.

MLB - 1902 Season Preview

1902 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL SEASON PREVIEW
(Report Date - 3/2/02)

LEAGUE PREVIEW

Code:
1901 STANDINGS
American League Eastern Division

Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec
Toronto Blue Jays 91 71 .562 - 91-71 - Champs
Boston Red Sox 87 75 .537 4.0 96-66
Baltimore Orioles 84 78 .519 7.0 80-82
New York (A) Yankees 83 79 .512 8.0 79-83
Tampa Bay Devil Rays 70 92 .432 21.0 72-90
Team To Watch: Boston Red Sox
- Boston is the team to watch in the AL East due to being the team that has lost the least. The defending champs Toronto lost their Ace SP Ben Vineyard to free agency. The Yankees traded away a starting 3b for a backup 3b, minor league OF and a 2nd rd pick. Baltimore did add one of the best closers in the league in Jeremy Millsap, but not much else. Boston, who won the ALCS in 1900 stayed pat and added a stud leadoff man via the draft in LF Patsy Dougherty. The 25 yo has .350 avg/50 sb talents and will be an excellent table setter for an offense which struggled to score runs. Former MLB ROY Tony Hopper and former IRL MVP Armando Capois will have many more chances to drive in runs with Doughtery leading off. But the real strength of the Red Sox is their pitching. With reigning AL ROY Jack Bracken, former AL CY Young Karl Holland and 1st rd pick Dummy Taylor at the top of the rotation, Boston has 3 "ace" quality SPs and a quality closer in Dan Richards who has averaged 52 saves per year the past 2 seasons, backing them up.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Lee MacHarold (BAL)
- In a league featuring a former Cy Young, a former SP ROY, multiple former 20 game winners, a pitcher who has never won more than 14 games might be the best in the division. MacHarold's ratings are off the charts (16/18/13) and even though he has never been an All-Star and has career numbers of 26-22, 3.73 era and 1.30 whip, he could be the key to the Orioles being a contender this season. The 25yo still has not reached his full potential and already has Cy Young caliber talents and 20+ game winner skills.

Hitter To Watch: RF Ron Cronshaw (TB)
- He was the in the player spotlight last year, and all he did was win the AL MVP with career highs of .354, 47 hr, 146 rbi & 128 runs, and at 27 yo and just entering his prime, there is no reason to believe he will have any dropoff this season. In fact, Tampa's signing of 2b Ramirez Marino to bat 2nd, ahead of Cronshaw, should help his numbers, as Marino hit .321 with a .377 ob% and 125 runs scored. Cronshaw is one of the best in the game, but unfortunately he plays on one of the worst teams in the AL, so he gets overshadowed.

Rookie To Watch: LF Patsy Dougherty (BOS)
- The 22nd pick in the rookie draft, Dougherty is trying to become Boston's 3rd consecutive AL Rookie of the Year, and the 25yo has a great shot. Skipping the minors, Patsy was immediately inserted as the Sox starting LF and leadoff hitter. With contact of 18/20, eye of 19/20 and speed of 20/20, he projects to one of, if not the best, leadoff hitters in all of baseball, even in his 1st major league season.

Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec
Detroit Tigers 100 62 .617 - 100-62
Chicago (A) White Sox 81 81 .500 19.0 79-83
Minnesota Twins 73 89 .451 27.0 75-87
Kansas City Royals 72 90 .444 28.0 72-90
Cleveland Indians 64 98 .395 36.0 64-98
Team To Watch: Detroit Tigers
- Detroit has won the Central the past 2 season by an avg of 17 games, so who else would be the team in the spotlight in the division. Led by 2 time 20+ game winner Erubiel Clemente and fellow All-Star Bob Alleman, the Tigers have 2 top notch SPs. Their lineup is anchored by 2 time AS, RF Joe McMurrich whose 121 rbi & 135 runs were team highs, and 2nd year man, 1b Frank Isbell who hit .304 as a rookie while stealing 62 bases. Their off-season was quiet, as their only moves were taking 2 high school prospects with their top 2 picks in the 2nd rd. But the Tigers have been the class of the AL Central and until someone beats them, why bet against them?

Pitcher To Watch: SP Erubiel Clemente (DET)
- White Sox SP Mamo Kirop is the reigning AL Cy Young winner, teammate Bob Alleman has far better ratings, but all Clemente has done the past 2 seasons was go 43-17. His ERA has always been around 3.00, he never strikes out many hitters, his career whip is 1.21 (nothing spectacular) but Clemente just wins, and alot. The only 2-time 20 game winner in baseball, he is the #1 pitcher on the best team in the division and a 3rd straight 20 win season is very capable by the 25yo Cy Young candidate.

Hitter To Watch: LF Dave DeWarrenne (KC)
- The 2 time All-star with the Braves signed a huge 77mil/5 yr deal with Kansas City to be their star. With career averages of .293, 45 hr, 122 rbi & 151 runs, he has certainly produced like one, but that was always on a 1st place team loaded with talent. KC has never won more than 72 games in a season and DeWarrenne is the cleanup hitter for a lineup that lacks many talented players. With the huge deal he signed, matching his career numbers will be tough, but he will be expected to for KC to justify the 15+ million per year they are paying him.

Newcomer To Watch: SP Bill Popp (CLE)
- While SP Ham Iburg was Cleveland's 1st pick at #4 overall, Popp at #14 is the one who will make the more immediate impact. Iburg will begin the season in the minors, but the 24yo Popp will be thrown to the wolves immediately, sliding in as the Indians' #2 SP before ever throwin a pitch in the majors. His stuff is suspect (4/20) and control is just avg (12/20), but he does have great movement (20/20) and endurance (20/20). More than likely he will struggle early, as Cleveland should really give him some time in the IRL, but when you lack talent, you don't have much choice. Eventually Popp will should be an effective middle of the rotation SP, but overcoming the early struggles will be key to his career success.

American League Western Division

Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec
Texas Rangers 98 64 .605 - 91-71
Los Angeles (A) Angels 92 70 .568 6.0 93-69
Oakland Athletics 78 84 .481 20.0 73-89
Seattle Mariners 61 101 .377 37.0 69-93
Team To Watch: Texas Rangers
- Texas and Anaheim have both made the playoffs the past 2 seasons, and have swapped division pennants. But the catcher position might be the key to Texas becoming the 2 time winner in the AL West. Texas added C Teodor Abascal (.320/18/98) from Atlanta, where as Anaheim lost #5 hitter C Jerry Trewin (.305/36/119) to the Mets. Adding Abascal to a lineup featuring 2 time AL HR king Mike DeBorthwick (avg 55 per year), as well as 5 other 20+ HR players should give Texas the most powerful lineup in baseball and the edge out West.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Ed "Meter Man" Hughs (TEX)
- Coming off a career best 20-7 with a 3.10 era, Hughs really improved from 1900 when he went 17-11 with 4.32 era and at 29 yo is now one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. With the lineup he has behind him, he should always get plenty of run support, and with ratings of 14/18/17, the Meter Man should easily match last year's 20 win/All-Star season, and could very well blow it away if he improves as much as he did from 1900 to 1901.

Hitter To Watch: RF Socks Seybold (SEA)
- Many writers argued that Seybold deserved the AL Rookie of the Year, leading all MLB rookies with .349 avg, 77 rbi & 115 runs. Now at 31, Socks looks to take the next step to greatness with a solid off-season improvement, his contact is up to 15/20 and power jumped up to 8/20 meaning he should really improve on last year's 7 homeruns. Batting in the more comfortable #3 spot instead of cleanup, Socks can really use his linedrive hitting skills and speed on the basepaths and should be an All-star for the 2nd time in 2 years in the majors.

Rookie To Watch: SP Mike O'Neill (OAK)
- The #3 pick in the draft out of Ireland, O'Neill has all the makings of an star in the majors. The A's are wasting no time with their prize draft pick, immediately giving him the ball on opening day as he figures to be their ace for many years at only 24 yo with already maxed ratings of 5/20/16 and enduarance of 20.

New York (N) Mets 105 57 .648 6.0 104-58
Florida Marlins 92 70 .568 19.0 88-74
Washington Nationals 75 87 .463 36.0 77-85
Philadelphia Phillies 63 99 .389 48.0 62-100
Team To Watch: New York Mets
- Atlanta is the 2-time NL East champs, the 1900 World Series Champs, the team with the best record in baseball last year and led by MLB's triple crown winner, yet the Mets get the nod as the team to watch due to alot of movement in the off-season. The Braves traded away 24 game winner Marquez Fileto for a decent OF in Adan Segura, they lost star LF Dave DeWarrenne and starting C Teodor Abascal and replaced them in the lineup only with 2B Julio Sarminto (.291/34/100), solid but no where near what they lost. The did require Cy Young caliber SP Ben Vineyard from Toronto, but with so much movement, the locker room is in turmoil. The Mets on the other hand signed C Jerry Trewin to bat 4th behind the big acquisition, SS Nap Lajoie from Japan, who they got at the trading deadline. Those 2 plus the best young starting rotation in baseball featuring 3 studs all 25 or younger (Doc White, Fred Mitchell, Ed Murphy) who combined to go 59-29 last year. The more stable and adding Mets, who did have the 2nd best record in baseball, vs the Braves with too much change...I like NY's chances.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Ezequiel Cano (FLA)
- The 26yo Guatemalan came into his own last year emerging as one of the best pitchers in the NL with a 19-9, 2.73 era, 260 k season. Despite still having suspect control (10/20), he is the purest form of a power pitcher with a 96 mph fastball and 17/20 stuff, 18/20 movement. He should build off last season's All-star year and continue to improve his control will moving into the upper echelon of SPs in all of baseball. He has Cy Young talent, and one could be in the immediate future for Cano.

Hitter To Watch: 2b George Boutte (ATL)
- Yes he lost his #1 running mate in LF DeWarrenne, and yes duplicating last season would be impossible, but come on now, he won the quadruptle crown, who else would get the nod as the hitter in the spotlight. He hit .403, 50 hr, 185 rbi, 150 runs...even if he has a major dropoff from last year and say he goes .350, 35, 125, 110...those are still MVP caliber stats...that's how good he was last year. But he is only 29yo, so dropping that much is unlikely, so he should be somewhere inbetween the 2 sets of stats...and still the MVP.

Rookie To Watch: 2b Frank Jackson (WAS)
- Washington's 1st pick, #10 overall, was interesting to say the least. He was easily the most MLB ready player in the draft (14 contact, 12 power, 18 eye, 10 speed), but a 39 year old better not be a rookie league prospect. So why then would a team who finished 36 games out take someone so old to help them immediately but probably not for more than a year or 2? Only 1 reason comes to mind...MONEY. Washington has lost millions the past 2 seasons and has the 2nd lowest attendance over that span, and the addition of Jackson might help them win 10-15 more games immediately, certainly not enough to make the playoffs, but maybe enough to draw more people thru the turnstiles.

Chicago (N) Cubs 70 92 .432 13.0 67-95
Team To Watch: Milwaukee Brewers
- In a division with so much mediocrity, why not select the team who had the best off-season, which looks like the Brew Crew. The neither added nor gained thru free agency, but drafted well getting SP Stan Yerkes, immediately sliding in as their #1 SP, and 3b Joe Yeager, giving them a quality backup hitter off the bench and backup infielder. Adding those 2 to stars like LF Eric Eckerman (.345, 39 hr, 126 rbi, 133 runs, 51 sb), CF Rafael Chafuen (.358, 125 runs, 52 sb, 2 gold gloves) and SP Whitey Guese (11-17, 3.66 era as a rookie) could very well give Milwaukee enough to break away from the .500 pact in the NL Central.

Pitcher To Watch: CL Eduardo Ferrez (HOU)
- At the young age of 24yo, Ferrez has already been a MLB closer for the Astros for 2 seasons, averaging 38 saves a year with a 3.36 era. But this off-season, Eduardo maxed out his potential, and his ratings of 17/16/19 make him one of the premier closers in all of baseball and his 94 mph fastball and 110 strikeouts in 112.2 ip make him one of the most dominant. He is looking to take the next step this year and make the NL All-star team, and if he can do that, the Astros will be a much better team and could emerge as the Central champs.

Hitter To Watch: LF Eric Eckerman (MIL)
- With season averages of .352, 51 hr, 140 rbi, 153 runs, 51 sb, Eckerman is a career avg 50/50 man and has been one of the top 3-4 all-around players in baseball the past 2 years. But as he approaches 40 and his ratings start to slip, season's like those numbers are quickly becoming a thing of the past. But at 39 yo, Eckerman is hoping his body can give him 1 more All-Star/MVP type of season and he can lead the Brewers to the playoffs before his playing days draw to an end.

Rookie To Watch: SP Addie Joss (HOU)
- How Joss slipped to the 3rd round is a mystery, but the Astros, who swooped him up, certainly aren't complaining. The 21 yo will start his career with Williamsport, Houston's minor league team, but his stay there should be short. With potential ratings of 6/20/19, Joss projects to one of the game's best in the very near future, and Houston looks like they might hand gotten the steal of the 1901 rookie class.

San Francisco Giants 78 84 .481 10.0 76-86
San Diego Padres 56 106 .346 32.0 63-99
Team To Watch: San Francisco Giants
- Despite Arizona's 2 year reign as division champs, this might be the year they are de-throned by the Giants, who had a productive off-season, added 2 quality SPs in the draft in Harry Felix & Pop Williams. While both are starting the season in the minors, they figure to be mid-season call-ups and will really solidify a staff already featuring Cy Young candidate Porfiro "Spitfire" Moncivaiz (35-13, 3.04 era in 2 yrs), CL Hernan Greigo (42 saves in 1st season as closer) and young promising pitchers Bill "Lefty" Cristall & Mateo Dorribo. Their offense is led by former NL ROY Chris Muirhead who at 23 is slowly emerging as one of the game's best. They might be a year or 2 away as one of the youngest team's in baseball, but they definitely have the talent to be a future pennant winning team.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Tom "Long Tom" Hughes (COL)
- As a rookie last year, Hughes went a very respectable 12-11 with a 3.77 era and 1.34 whip pitching in the thin air in Colorado. After a big jump in stuff his ratings have peaked at 9/20/14 and he looks like he will really improve on last year's numbers, emerging as an All-star caliber pitcher at only 23yo. While pitching in Colorado will always be tough, Hughes has the type of ratings in which he can excel there.

Hitter To Watch: LF Chris Muirhead (SF)
- 2 years removed from winning the ROY in 1900, Muirhead has gone from solid young prospect to future MVP contender. He missed a few weeks last year, but despite the injury still posted numbers of .332, 28 hr, 88 rbi & 116 runs. Down from his rookie year, but he also missed 20 games. At 23yo, his ratings have maxed and with contact of 18/20, power of 16/20 and eye of 16/20, he has the talent to be a league leader in both avg, ops & power. Moving to the cleanup spot this year, he is ready to explode and should have a monster year for the Giants.

Rookie To Watch: SP SP Bob "Long Bob" Ewing (SD)
- The #1 pick in the draft is slightly older than most rookies at 28yo, and is starting the year in the Padres' minor league system, but his stay in Hagerstown should be short lived. Projecting as the future #1 SP for SD, the team with the worst combined record over the 1st 2 seasons of the MLB, Ewing's potential ratings of 7/20/14 are stellar. Add in a 20/20 endurance rating and 90 mph fastball with 2 other quality pitches and Long Bob could be the 1st piece in turning around San Diego's poor record.

1902 INTERNATIONAL ROOKIE LEAGUE SEASON PREVIEW

LEAGUE PREVIEW

Code:
1901 STANDINGS
Washington League East Division

Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec
Idaho Falls Chukers 56 44 .560 - 56-44
Billings Mustangs 55 45 .550 1.0 55-45
Orem Owlz 51 49 .510 5.0 55-45
Missoula Osprey 47 53 .470 9.0 45-55
Ogden Raptors 45 55 .450 11.0 41-59
Team To Watch: Missoula Osprey
- The Osprey was selected as the team to watch in the WL East last year, but disappointed finishing 9 games out. This year they are the team to watch again and are led by their pitching. With 1st rd pick George Mullin and 5th rd pick Crese Heismann anchoring the staff, they have 2 top notch SPs. Their offense is led by Ben Wrighton, Jack Morrissey, Fred Crolius & Carson Hensley, all former high draft picks and all under 25 yo prospects who project to MLB players. With this much talent, the only thing that might hurt Missoula is the call-ups, and the White Sox could use some of these players on the MLB roster, so that is likely.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Carl Lundgren (IF)
- A 4th rd pick in the 1901 draft by the Angels, Lundgren will make his baseball debut as Idaho Falls' #1 SP. The 22yo has potential ratings of 6/20/13, projecting him to be a middle of the rotation starter for Anaheim. He does have suspect endurance (11/20) however, and will need to improve that in the minors before his call-up. He figures to be one of the top pitchers in the IRL while he is there, and as the ace of a division winner, should have a solid season.

Hitter To Watch: CF Rey Garcia (IF)
- It's not often that the MVP of the rookie league would be back to defend his crown the next season, normally he's up in the majors. However Garcia, at only 20, isn't quite ready for the bigs according to Anaheim, so here he is. Coming off an all-around quality year of .279, 19 hr, 50 rbi, 69 run, 33 sb, and after some nice improvement in his ratings, Rey has a very realistic chance of becoming the 1st ever 2-time MVP, assuming the Angels don't call him up.

Boise Hawks 45 55 .450 14.0 44-56
Yakima Bears 39 61 .390 20.0 36-64
Team To Watch: Eugene Emeralds
- Coming off a season inwhich they had the best record in the WL and won their division by a convincing 11 games, Eugene again is the team to beat in the Central. They are a power HR hitting team that won't hit for a high avg but will score in bunches with the longball and their top sluggers are RF Mike Dickerson, who at 19 has 2 yrs of experience and back-to-back 10 hr seasons, LF Phil Haigh & 2b Ed Lewis. Their pitching staff is led by 2 1st rd picks in last years' draft, 20yo Brenton Hayhurst & 16yo Oscar Hinton, both who project down the road to solid MLB SPs and 6th rd pick, CL Manuel Tellecha, who at 25yo, is one of top closers in the IRL.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Carson Richards (YAK)
- Richards has been in the A's organization for 2 seasons already, and last year the 22yo came into his own, splitting time between Oakland & Yakima. He struggled a bit with the A's, but excelled with the Bears, going 7-2 with a 1.89 era and 1.06 whip in 13 starts. He starts off 1902 as Yakima's ace, and with projected ratings of 8/16/12, a recall up to Oakland shouldn't be far off, but while in the IRL, expect him to put up big numbers again.

Hitter To Watch: SS William Perret (JUP)
- Arizona's 1st rd pick in last year's draft, the 18yo out of France projects to a solid MLB SS down the road. With projected numbers of 11/20 in contact, power and eye, and 12/20 in speed, he figures to be a decent hitter with some pop and steal. His biggest asset is his glove (18/20) and looks like he has gold glove caliber defense at one of the most difficult positions to play, SS.

Vancouver Canadians 56 45 .554 1.0 57-44 - Champs
Brooklyn Cyclones 53 47 .530 3.5 54-46
Everett Aquasox 42 58 .420 14.5 45-55
Team To Watch: Vancouver Canadians
- The reigning IRL World Series champs didn't win their division, but made the playoffs for the 2nd straight year, and a 3rd season of post-season play looks like it's in the cards for Colorado's minor league affiliate. The new offensive leaders looks to be 2nd rd pick, Leon Betancourt out of PR, who projects to a solid hitting RF at the major league level, and already has good enough stats to excel in the IRL. Many of last year's top pitchers have been promoted to Colorado, but SPs Wallace Hardt, Walter Merkle & Tommy Paterson give Vancouver 3 solid SPs and closer Gary Ashwood was an 8th rd pick in last year's draft, who thanks to a great off-season, now projects to a MLB RP rather than just a career minor leaguer.

Pitcher To Watch: CL Jose Armijos (EVE)
- Armijos has had back to back 20+ save seasons for Everett, however last year he struggled as his ERA ballooned from 1.09 in 1900 to 4.94 in 1901. But his ratings would tell you last year was an aberation, and he should return to his 1900 form. 11/19/11 potential ratings for Cincy's propspect gives him a legit shot at being a set-up man in the majors, but the Reds aren't rushing the 21yo, and he figures to spend the entire year as the Aquasox closer.

Hitter To Watch: RF Leon Betancourt (VAN)
- Last year, Canadian's RF Leonardo Gargiola led all of the IRL in both HR & RBI, but he has moved on and is with Minnesota in the majors. This season, another Vancouver RF has a chance to duplicate the feat, as Betancourt projects to a big hitter at the ML level. With potential ratings of 13/20 in contact and 12/20 in power, the 2nd rd pick should put up big numbers in his 1st season in the IRL and is the top prospect on Colorado's minor league team.

Hudson Valley Renegades 53 47 .530 5.0 57-43
Batavia Muck Dogs 52 48 .520 6.0 56-44
Williamsport Crosscutters 50 50 .500 8.0 49-51
State College Spikes 43 57 .430 15.0 49-51
Team To Watch: Auburn Doubledays
- Coming off 2 consecutive LL East division titles, the Doubledays look like a good bet to make it a 3-peat in 1902. The biggest reason for this is their unbelivable starting rotation. 17th overall pick Warren McLaughlin is the #1, 5th rd pick in 1900 Roscoe Miller is #2, 7th rd pick in 1900 Benicio Bursos is #3 even though he was their best last year at 13-5, an 9th rd picks Fernando Olvero & Danny Gabb round out the rotation, giving them the best 1 thru 5 in the IRL. 6th rd pick, RF Gary O'Brien anchors a below avg lineup, but he does project to a MLB outfielder, giving them 1 quality bat in a lineup that won't have to score much.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Tommy "Tired" Henshall (BAT)
- The 19yo is 17-12 with a 2.82 era in 43 career starts over his 2 seasons with Batavia. His nickname describes the 1 flaw in his game, his endurance at 10/20. Other than that, Henshall has MLB All-star written all over him with potential rationgs of 10/15/12 and 4 pitches. As Batavia's ace this year, he will be asked to anchor the load on his own after sharing the "ace" title with George Winter who has been promoted to Tampa Bay, but Henshall has the talent to be an IRL Cy Young winner.

Hitter To Watch: C Damien Cowen (SC)
- The 22yo our of the paradise of Aruba has been one of the top catchers in the IRL the past 2 seasons, with averages of .279, 8 hr, 35 rbi & 41 runs. After a solid off-season, the Mets minor league catcher is ready to put up career bests and make his 1st IRL All-star team. With potential ratings of 11/20 in contact & power and 12/20 in eye, he also projects to a starting MLB catcher someday down the road. Watch for Cowen to be on many IRL leaderboards come season end if he's not up with the Mets as their backup catcher.

Mahoning Valley Scappers 43 57 .430 15.0 44-56
Team To Watch: Vermont Lake Monsters
- Vermont is the team to watch in the Central thanks to their parent organization's misfortunes. Philly has been one of the worst teams both years of the MLB's existence, and thus have had alot of high picks and Vermont looks like they have benefitted from this. Their offense is loaded with high avg type hitters including last year's 3rd rd pick, LF George "Deerfoot" Barclay as well as former .400 hitter in the IRL, 2b Cipriano Vildesola, who they claimed off waivers from SF. The pitching staff consists of avg starters, but the best bullpen in the Lincoln league with 5 quality relievers, the best being Japanese import, Seishiro Komatsuzaki, who posted a 2.00 era and 1.07 whip in 22 relief appearances last year with Vermont.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Gene "Mike" McCann (HAG)
- McCann was a 1st rd pick in the 1900 draft by Minnesota, but due to lack of options, the 25yo was claimed off waivers by San Diego, and he figures to be a mainstay with the Padres in the near future. Starting the year in the minors, McCann went 11-11 last year, splitting time between Kannapolis and Minnesota and with potential ratings of 5/20/11, he projects to a back of the rotation MLB starter.

Hitter To Watch: RF Bunk Congalton (MV)
- KC's 3rd rd pick looks to be a solid hitter in the bigs sooner than later. The 28yo lacks any power or speed, but with contact & eye potential of 16/20 and sac bunt of 10, he looks like a proto-typical #2 hitter in the bigs and a guy who can hit close to .300 with a solid OB%. He probably will never be an AS at the MLB level, but a solid everyday player looks like a lock, and with 9/20 in contact already, he is one of the best hitters in the IRL and should contend for the batting title.

Kannapolis Intimidators 42 58 .420 20.0 43-57
Team To Watch: West Virginia Power
- West Virginia was the IRL's best team all year, and even with a disappointing playoff showing, they are still the team to beat out West. A powerful lineup, with 4 players HR power potential of 10 or better, including LL HR king Romano Charana give the Power the edge, as they were one of the highest scoring teams last year, and this year should be no different. The will need to score alot however, as the pitching is avg at best, but their team nickname describes them to a T, and expect them to outscore teams in winning games.

Pitcher To Watch: SP Pop Williams (ASH)
- The 27yo Pop was the 12th overall pick in last year's draft, and the Giants prospect looks like a solid player. With potential ratings of 4/20/13, he doesn't figure to be an ace, #1 type pitcher, but an innings eater (20 endurance) as a #4/5 and will start off 1902 as the ace of the Tourists. He should have a short stay in the IRL though as he is already maxed out as a 27yo, and could slide in at the backend of SF's rotation.

Hitter To Watch: 2b Danny Murphy (LAK)
- The 2nd pick in the 2nd rd, Murphy is an All-star in the making at 2b for the Pirates. He is an ideal leadoff man with 15/20 contact and 15/20 eye potential as well as 17/20 speed. Add in a solid glove at both 2b and RF, and Murphy looks like a steal as a 2nd rounder who will be a star for Pittsburgh for many years as he is only 25 and a promotion to the majors is in the cards sometime this season.

Team Spotlight: Chiba Lotte Marines
- With 6 of their everyday players as virtual .300 hitting All-Stars, the Marines look like a good bet to make it 2 PL pennants in a row. With those type of hitters up and down the lineup, it is easy to see why Chiba Lotte is easily the best offense in Japan, leading all of the *** in Avg, Runs Scored, OPS and SB. The leader so far has been RF Takamasa Kawaii, who signed as a FA with the Marines from Yokohama in the off-season, and he has proved to be a great addition as he leads all of Japan in RBI and is tired for the HR lead. As for pitching, Chiba Lotte is not that deep, but they do have the ***'s only 11 game winner, Nig Cuppy, serving as an excellect stopper.

Pitcher Spotlight: SP Kamatari Takano (TOH)
- The Pacific League has been the more offensive league this season, but don't tell Takano that. His 2.05 era leads all of the ***, and is almost a full run less than the 2nd place pitcher in the PL. With a stellar 9-2 record, he also leads the PL in K's as the only one to triple digits so far, as well as Whip, Opp Avg & Vorp and right now, he is the front runner to become the 1st 2-time Cy Young winner in Japan.

Hitter Spotlight: RF Akira Fujii (TOH)
- Fujii gets the nod simply because he was the biggest All-Star snub. Hitting .311 with 18 hr, 44 rbi & 45 runs, Akira is tied for the league lead in HR, and leads the PL in OPS and slugging. How he didn't get selected to the All-Star team is a complete mystery, as he should have been a starter, not only on the team.

Rookie Spotlight: SP Christy "Big Six" Mathewson (FUK)
- As the only rookie on the PL All-Star team, Mathewson has been very solid in his 1st full season after coming over to Japan from the MLB. Barring a major injury, he is a lock for the ROY as his picture is literally in every single box (except for saves which is blank) on the statistical leaderboard. His 3.21 era & 1.24 whip rank him 4th in the PL in both categories and his 6.80 K/BB ratio is tops in all of Japan. He is still getting adjusted to life in the ***, but expect him to just get better and better and more dominant as his career goes on.

Team Spotlight: Chunichi Dragon
- Hiroshima and Yomiuri are tied and battling for the division title, but watch out for Chunichi. With arguablely the best pitcher in the CL in Roger Hales and the most prolific offense in the Central with 5 All-stars and the *** lead in HRs, they have the talent to jump both of these teams and win the pennant when it's all said and done.

Pitcher Spotlight: CL Shigeko Nishiyama (YOM)
- With 3 of the Giants 5 opening day starters seeing time on the DL this season, the one consistent in the defending champs pitching staff has been their closer, Nishiyama. The only 3-time pitching All-star in the CL, he has constantly been in the league leaders in saves, and this year also leads all closers with a 1.53 era despite a mind boggling only 6 strikeouts in 17.2 ip, not something you expect out of a closer.

Hitter Spotlight: 1B Terumoto Baba (YOK)
- Despite playing on the worst team in the CL, Baba is doing everything in his power to get his team into contention. The 2-time All-star has always been known as one of Japan's best power hitters, but with a career best .313 avg at the break, at 29yo, he is becoming a solid contact hitter as well. The slugging hasn't left, as Baba still is tied for the league lead in homers and leads in RBI, he has just gotten better, and added a .300 hitter to an already dangerous approach at the plate.

Rookie Spotlight: CF Francisco Mulert (HIR)
- Mulert was the throw-in in the Nap Lajoie/Mike Ohler trade, but the 24yo looks like a key addition for Hiroshima in his 1st full season. While only hitting .229, he is a power man with 14 Hr's ranking him 3rd in the CL and 48 rbi. He has never shown the talent to be a high avg man at the plate, but his power was never questioned, and now playing everyday in Japan, he is showing it off and looks like a future HR king in the ***.

Billings Mustangs 20 28 .417 10.0 21-27
Team Spotlight: Orem Owlz
- It seems like year in & year out, Orem is always looking up at Idaho at the midway point. Usually the Owlz fade away at this point, however this year might be the season they go the other direction, to the top of the division. Already with a comfortable lead for the wildcard spot, Orem wants the pennant, and led by 3 All-star pitchers, they might just do it thanks to the arms of their staff. Leading the WL in ERA, Opp Avg & complete games, the Owlz have a solid starting rotation and the league leader in saves behind them, despite his high ERA.

Pitcher Spotlight: SP Bob McGaw (OGD)
- McGaw had made 10 starts of Ogden this season prior to his callup with Atlanta. His first start was a loss, then a ND. Since then he won his next 8 starts in a row, and allowed a ridiculous 7 er in 71.2 ip over that span, and at the midway point has the leagues best Whip & Opp Avg and the WL's best ERA & Vorp while ranking 2nd in wins.

Hitter Spotlight: LF Juan Abredondo (BIL)
- The 24yo slugger Abredondo has been the best power hitter in a down year in the WL thru the break. He leads all the IRL in Total Bases and has a 3 hr lead in the WL with 13 at the break, along with a league lead 32 runs scored as Billings' #3 hitter. The amazing part is he is doing this in what is a down year for him, as last year he hit close to .300, so figure a better 2nd half from the AS Leftfielder.

Boise Hawks 17 31 .354 7.0 19-29
Team Spotlight: Tri City Valley Cats
- In a division of so much mediocrity, the only team at .500 is in the spotlight, thanks mainly to 1B Javier Peruz, the top player in the WL Central at the All-star break. The Valley Cats are the best of the worst essentially, as none of these teams should be in the playoffs with the way they've played so far.

Pitcher Spotlight: CL Nobuhiko Hayagawa (TRI)
- Hayagawa is the only Central pitcher to make the All-star team, and thus is the one named here. He has not been dominant by any stretch of the imagination with only 6 k in 12.2 ip, but he does have respectable ERA (1.42) & Whip (1.03) and is on pace to save 20+ for the 3rd straight season, as he currently ranks tied for 3rd in the WL.

Hitter Spotlight: SS Angelito Kilgrew (YAK)
- Kilgrew was a surprise All-star selection only playing in 31 games and having 67 ab. But he has been stellar over that time. He would lead the league in Batting Avg if he had enough AB. He would also project to 12 hr, 42 rbi, 30 runs, ranking him near the top on those leaderboards as well. There really is no explanation as to why he hasn't played that much, not suffering an injury or being called up. However expect to see him in the lineup every day for the Bears from here on in as they try to win the division.

Vancouver Canadians 22 26 .458 10.0 21-27
Team Spotlight: Brooklyn Cyclones
- The best team in the Washington League also has the biggest lead, as Brooklyn is up by a comfortable 9 games at the break. Led by the only 10 game winner in the IRL, Wade Sipes and a nice 1-2 punch in the heart of their lineup in Corjio/Aitchison, they have the star power leading them to the best record at the break, and save for a big dropoff, should easily win the WL West.

Pitcher Spotlight: SP Wade Sipes (BRO)
- The Cyclones' ace has been virtually perfect this season, going 10-0 in 11 starts in which he averages over 8 ip a start. He also leads all of the IRL with a 83 k / 10 bb ratio and ranks in the top 5 in the WL in ERA, Whip, Strikeouts and IP and Detroit's 2nd rd pick in the 1901 draft looks like he is on the fast track to becoming a star.

Hitter Spotlight: LF Barry Glass (ABE)
- For the past 2 season's Glass has been the Yankees 6th OF, splitting time between NY & Aberdeen and has done a solid job at both stops. He's having his best season this season, so far all in the IRL, and has made his 1st All-star game as a reward. But at 29, and with free agency looming after the season, Glass might be playing for a job in one of the other leagues around the world as he has the talent to be a starter in both Japan & Mexico.

Williamsport Crosscutters 19 29 .396 9.0 23-25
Team Spotlight: State College Spikes
- The minor league team of the Mets might be the team to win it all this year in the IRL. Built around the 1st half MVP, C Damien Cowen and a deadly 1-2 punch at the top of rotation in Duarte Monterosa & Felipe Alonza who have gone 16-4 on the year, the Spikes look like a legitimate contender for the IRL World Series with star players leading the way.

Pitcher Spotlight: SP Tommy "Tired" Henshall (BAT)
- Making his 2nd straight All-star game, Henshall is a proven talent for Batavia. Last year he went 10-5 with a 2.50 era and so far this year he is destroying those numbers despite only being 5-1 in 10 starts. 2nd in LL in ERA and Opp Avg, he has dominated while in the game, but the Muck Dogs have blown a few of his gems only giving him 5 wins. He is very close to being MLB ready, so finishing the year in the IRL is unlikely for Tommy.

Hitter Spotlight: 1B Dustin Cloud (HV)
- At only 19yo, Cloud has had a rough start to his MLB career. He has been on 5 teams and with 3 organizations in his 3 seasons, and still hasn't turned 20. Always thought of a power hitter who won't hit for a high avg and strikes out too much, Cloud is putting together his best season so far, hitting for a solid .278 with 2 teams and has combined for 15 hrs overall, tying him for the IRL lead and proving he hasn't lost the power that once made him a can't-miss prospect.

Vermont Lake Monsters 20 28 .417 10.0 21-27
Team Spotlight: Mahoning Valley Scappers
- Mahoning Valley and Lowell have been trading the division lead back and forth all season, but the Scappers look like they might be the better of the 2 by season's end. In comparison of the 2 teams, Mahoning Valley has the better offense and pitching team numbers, and more All-star players, giving them the edge. Jago Tamares anchors the staff in ever essence of the word, as he leads all of the IRL in IP, the only pitcher over 100, and leads the LL in K's with a solid 9-5 record. Offensively, they are hitting a Lincoln leading .265 as a team and are the only team in the league to have 2 of the top 5 players in Avg.

Pitcher Spotlight: CL Ramone Montesdeoca (DEL)
- Despite only getting in 11 games and 9.2 ip, Montesdeoca has been perfect, 10 for 10 in save attempts and a 0.00 era. He has only given up 5 hits and 1 walk in his stints on the mound, and if not for a 2 week injury, would probably be near the top in saves, as he leads all other closers in every other statistic.

Hitter Spotlight: 1B Jim Grisham (MV)
- The ancient 41yo Grisham is giving it one last go and more than likely will retire after the season as his ratings continue to drop. However he is going out with a bang as the linedrive hitter is contending for the batting title while leading the Scappers, hopefully to an IRL playoff berth, before he hangs up the spikes.

Kannapolis Intimidators 21 27 .438 12.0 17-31
Team Spotlight: Asheville Tourists
- Rivaling fellow West leader Brooklyn from the WL, Asheville has the best record in their league and a 9 game cushion at the midway point. Their doing it with the longball (most in the LL) and with pitching (best ERA & Opp Avg in the LL) and are led by Cy Young favorite SP Clarence Currie, who has been head and shoulder, the best pitcher in the Lincoln League so far.

Pitcher Spotlight: SP Clarence Currie (ASH)
- The Giants 5th rd pick in last year's draft has been fantastic thru the 1st half and is the current favorite to win the Cy Young in the Lincoln league, provided he remains in the minors and doesn't get the call to SF. Leading all IRL pitchers in ERA & Vorp and topping the LL in Whip, Opp Avg and tied for lead in wins, Currie has done it all this year and has been untouchable, literally, at times, throwing a No-Hitter and a 1 hitter thru his 1st 11 professional starts.

Hitter Spotlight: SS Don Miles (WV)
- Miles has been in the Cards minor league organization for 3 years, but has never done much, until this year and his 20th bday. Now maxed out in ratings, he is putting it all together with impressive numbers and looks like he has turned the corner and is not considered one of the elite in the IRL and a future major leaguer.

Baltimore Orioles 42 29 .592 - 42-29

New York (A) Yankees 34 37 .479 8.0 34-37
Toronto Blue Jays 31 40 .43 7 11.0 31-40
Team Spotlight: Baltimore Orioles
- The surprising leader in the AL East at the midway point, most predicted Baltimore to be the 4th best team in the division. Their offense is really whats been keeping them atop the division, as they are hitting a AL team best .299 and have scored the most runs in the league. Led by the 1-2 punch of Damario Legorreta & Joe Alvarez batting 3rd & 4th in their order, they have been averaging close to 6 runs a game, and if they keep up that pace should hold on to the pennant.

Pitcher Spotlight: CL Jeremy "Ignator" Millsap (BAL)
- 3 years, 3 different teams, 3 All-star games...it's an annual thing with Millsap, who you would figure someone would lock up to a long term deal after his success. Every year, he is one of the best closers in baseball and an All-star for whatever team he's on. At 29yo, and only signed to a 1 yr deal with Baltimore, they would be smart to lock him up and not make it 4 for 4 next year.

Hitter Spotlight: RF Ron Cronshaw (TB)
- Coming off an AL MVP season, Cronshaw was viewed by many as one of the best in baseball. Topping last year's number might make it an uniamous "the best" vote. Leading the majors in HR, RBI, Runs scored, OPS & Vorp, and leading the AL in Avg & BB, he is the current quadruptle crown leader in the AL, and on pace to better all of his MVP stats from last year.

Rookie Spotlight: SP Jim St.Vrain (TB)
- The 19yo, 5th overall pick in last year's draft has not only been the best rookie pitcher in the AL, he's been one of the top pitchers period. He leads all AL rookies in ERA, Vopr, Whip & Opp Avg and is the only pitcher in baseball with 3 complete game shutouts. He is definitely a future Cy Young candidate and the front-runner for the AL ROY.

American League Central Division

Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec
Detroit Tigers 38 33 .535 - 40-31
Minnesota Twins 37 34 .521 1.0 40-31
Kansas City Royals 35 36 .493 3.0 35-36
Cleveland Indians 34 37 .479 4.0 33-38
Chicago (A) White Sox 33 38 .465 5.0 38-33
Team Spotlight: Kansas City Royals
- Unlike the previous 2 years, Detroit looks beatable and their stranglehold on the Central may be coming to an end. If any team can do, it's the Royals and their outstanding 1-2 at the top of the rotation, Pearson & Talamentez, both 9-3 at the break, and CL Lou Fowness, who has emerged as one of the best in his 1st season as a closer in the majors. Their offense has been disappointing, even with FA signee Dave DeWarrenne slumping mightily this year, but the pitching has kept them right in the hunt with Detroit, and could be the cog to crowning a new team as AL Central champs.

Pitcher Spotlight: SP Oliverios Talamentez (KC)
- Oliverios signed with the Royals after 2 really bad years with the Cubs, going 21-33 over that time. But the 25yo has made a fresh start of it in KC, and finally looks like the ace the Cubs thought he was. On the AL leaderboard in ERA, Wins, IP & Vorp, he is having a great 1st season with KC and looks like he has turned the corner on his career.

Hitter Spotlight: RF Joe McMurrich (DET)
- Consistently one of the best players in baseball, McMurrich is a 3 time All-star for Detroit and always their offensive leader. As usual, he is on the AL leaderboards in Avg, HR, RBI & Runs and is on pace to set career highes in every statistic. Detroit recently locked up their star with a 2 yr/42 mil extension, giving him the highest per yr salary of 21 mil, and after the past 3 seasons, rightfully so.

Rookie Spotlight: SP Alex Pearson (KC)
- Pearson flew under the radar in last year's draft as a 4th rd pick for the Royals, but they proved to be the smart ones as he is one of their big 2 pitchers at the break. The only thing that TB rookie St. Vrain doesn't lead rookies in is wins. That's because Pearson has 9 of them, and at this point in time, looks like the only viable contender for the AL ROY award.

Oakland Athletics 27 44 .380 14.0 27-44
Team Spotlight: Texas Rangers
- 2 playoff appearances in a row including the West pennant last year, the best pitcher in all of baseball in Ed Hughs, the most HRs hit by any team in the AL by a large margin led by Mike Deborthwick's 19 and 4 other players in double digits, and Anaheim, their main rival, suffering 2 major injuries to best pitcher John Clinkscales and best hitter Jorge Balcorta...you have to like the Rangers chances in the AL West.

Pitcher Spotlight: SP Ed "Meter Man" Hughs (TEX)
- Hughs won 20 games last year, yet got no consideration for the Cy Young and didn't make the AS team. He was pissed and he's taking it out on opposing hitters. Lowering his ERA by over a run, he leads all of the MLB in both ERA and Wins at the break, as well as Vopr & Opp Avg. He is the easy choice for first half Best Pitcher and after being name All-star starter, he wants the Cy Young to completely atone from last year's snubs.

Hitter Spotlight: RF Mike DeBorthwick (TEX)
- DeBorthwick has hit more HR's thru 2 MLB seasons than anyone else, but is having his best season so far this year...and he's only 25yo. For the 1st time in his career, he's one of the best avg hitters in baseball, as well as the power, ranking 2nd in both HR & RBI and leads the most powerful offense in baseball at the midway point.

Rookie Spotlight: SP Bob Wicker (SEA)
- The AL West doesn't have the caliber of rookies as last year, when Socks Seybold qualified. But his new teammate, Bob Wicker, gets the nod as he is the new #1 pitcher for Seattle. The #2 overall pick in the 1901 rookie draft has made an immediate impact in the majors, with a respectable 3.66 era & 1.24 whip with a 7-6 record despite playing on one of the worst pitching staffs in baseball.

Washington Nationals 32 39 .451 10.0 34-37
Team Spotlight: New York (N) Mets
- Hitting a slump right before the All-star break inwhich they went 1-9 in their last 10 and lost their last 6 straight allowed both Atlanta & Florida to jump NY in the standings, but the Mets have still been the best team in the division all year. Led by .400 hitting Nap Lajoie, the Mets are the only team in baseball with over a .300 team batting avg. 2 of their 3 young studs have continued it in their 2nd year as Mitchell and White made the All-star team, but 25 game winner Ed Murphy has struggled a bit. If he comes around to last year's form, and the hitting keeps up what it's been doing, the Mets should dethrone the Braves as NL East Champs.

Pitcher Spotlight: CL Jose "Dawg" Arellanos (ATL)
- Coming over from division rival Florida, Arellanos has made the All-star team 3 years in a row, and every year is one of the best closers in baseball. At the midway point this year, Dawg leads all the majors in saves with a ridiculous 27 k / 2 bb ratio in his 24.1 ip.

Hitter Spotlight: SS Nap Lajoie (NYM)
- In his first full season in the MLB, Lajoie has proven that what he did in previous baseball leagues and in Japan's International league was not an abberation. He hit .419 in Japan last year before coming to the Mets and hitting .388 in his short time. He's back over .400 as the only hitter above that magic number in baseball and also leads the league in hits and 2nd in the NL in stolen bases to teammate Koch, making the Mets look like geniuses after their blockbuster trade for him.

Rookie Spotlight: SP Bob "Dusty" Rhoads (FLO)
- Serving as the #4 pitcher for the Marlins, their first rd pick from last year has been very solid in his first MLB season. Going 9-5 with a 3.47 era, he ranks among the top NL rookie pitchers in ERA, wins, Whip, Opp Avg and K's while leading all NL rookies in IP.

Chicago (N) Cubs 32 39 .451 6.0 34-37
Team Spotlight: Houston Astros
- Last year, Houston led the Central at the midway point only to fall apart and finished 4th by season end. This year, led by All-star hitters Jim Patton & Tom Johnson, and with a deep rotation featuring 4 quality starts and 2 stud SPs in the minors, the Astros look like a team that is poised for a post-season berth and won't fold this year like last year's debacle.

Pitcher Spotlight: SP Stan "Yank" Yerkes (MIL)
- 2 rookie pitchers, Yerkes & Hale, lead the NL in wins, so we'll profile Yerkes here and Hale as the Rookie spotlight player. As the 9th overall pick in the draft, Yank was immediately thrown into the mix as the Brewers #1 SP and he has delivered big time, tied for the NL lead in wins and among the league leaders in ERA, IP & Vorp. He and Hale are 2 rookie superstar pitchers emerging from the NL Central.

Hitter Spotlight: 2B Steve "Pistol" Reid (STL)
- Reid won the Rookie League MVP in 1900 and is the first award winner from the IRL to really take his skills there to the next level in the majors. Leading the NL in runs scored, 4th in Avg & 2nd in OPS, the 22yo Reid might be winning another MVP award soon, at the MLB level. He did suffer a serious injury right before the All-star break, Rupturing his MCL, which will keep him out for 7-8 months, ending his season. But expect Reid to come back stronger than ever next year for the Cards.

Rookie Spotlight: SP Dad Hale (CIN)
- As mentioned above, Hale, along with fellow rookie Yerkes, are tied for the NL lead in wins, which is ironic as they were picked right after each other (17th & 18th overall) in the 1st rd of the 1901 draft. Hale's ERA isn't as impressive as Yerkes, being a full run higher, but he has 1 less loss vs. 11 wins, a dozen more strikeouts. Both are All-stars in their 1st season, and should be linked favorably for the rest of their career as 2 of the best.

Colorado Rockies 30 41 .423 10.0 30-41
Team Spotlight: Arizona Diamondbacks
- The prolific 1-2 punch of Incendio Ondarza & Sexto Lopez are back at it again as the best duo combo of hitters in baseball, and again have the D-Backs in prime position to win the pennant, their 3rd in a row. Pitching has always been a problem spot for Arizona, and this year is no different as they don't have a starter with an ERA below 4.50, but with one of the best offenses in baseball and the best #3/4 hitting duo in the game, Arizona looks ready to make it back to the playoffs.

Pitcher Spotlight: SP Porfiro "Spitfire" Moncivaiz (SF)
- The 3-time All-star, annual Cy Young candidate Moncivaiz is having another solid season as one of the best pitchers in baseball. Despite only 7 wins, Spitfire leads the NL in ERA & Vorp and is among the leaders in Whip, Opp Avg & Strikeouts. He will need a big 2nd half to change his title of "bridesmaid" into bride and win the best pitcher/Cy Young award, but at only 25 and one of the best in baseball, his awards will come.

Hitter Spotlight: 1B Sexto Lopez (ARI)
- Lopez was the rightful 1900 MVP, but lost out to his teammate Ondarza. Last year, he missed some time due to injury and had a down year. This year, the 23yo is back with MVP caliber numbers. While not leading the NL in any category, Lopez is in the top 5 in Avg, RBI, Vorp and OPS. His HR total is down from the previous 2 seasons, but he is still on pace for 30-35, a very solid total. Lopez is still one of the best in the game after last year's off-season, and is showing it again this year.

Rookie Spotlight: SP Bob "Long Bob" Ewing (SD)
- Despite a horrible 4-9 record, due mostly to playing on a bad team, the 1st overall pick in the draft has shown alot of promise with a 4.24 era and 1.55 whip. Definitely not shining as much as some of the other rookie pitchers taken after him in the draft, some writers are calling Ewing, who is 29 already, a bust for SD. Bob still has plenty of seasons to prove them wrong and prove why he was the #1 pick in the 1901 draft.

*** - 1902 Season Wrap-Up

1902 [league redacted] LEAGUE POST SEASON REPORT
(Report Date - 9/20/02)

LEAGUE REPORT

Code:
1902 FINAL STANDINGS
Pacific League

Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec
Chiba Lotte Marines 87 59 .596 - 88-58
Nippon Fighters 79 67 .541 8.0 76-70
Tohoku Rakuten Ninjas 76 70 .521 11.0 80-66
Fukuoka Daiei Hawks 74 72 .507 13.0 71-75
Seibu Lions 64 82 .438 23.0 66-80
Orix Buffaloes 58 88 .397 29.0 59-87
PENNANT RACES:
Chiba Lotte was the class of the Pacific all season long, expanding on a 3 game lead at the midway point to an 8 game lead at season's end. The Marines won their 2nd straight Pacific League title, and really has been the best team over the 3 years of the ***, missing the division by only 2 games in 1900, and winning the pennant in 1901 & 1902.

1902 FINAL STANDINGS
Central League

Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec
Yomiuri Giants 84 62 .575 - 80-66
Hiroshima Toyo Carp 81 65 .555 3.0 87-59
Yakult Swallows 80 66 .548 4.0 78-68
Chunichi Dragon 72 74 .493 12.0 76-70
Yokohama Bay Stars 63 83 .432 21.0 62-84
Hanshin Tiger 58 88 .397 26.0 56-90
PENNANT RACES:
The defending *** champs are headed back to the Championship to defend their crowns. A back and forth pennant chase all season with Hiroshima wasn't decided until the very end. The Giants and Carp headed into the final series tied in the standings with Yakult 1 game behind. The schedule makers must have had a crystal ball as Yomiuri & Hiroshima met to close out the season. The experience of the Giants won out as they swept away the Carp rendering Yokohama's sweep of Yakult meaningless and giving the Giants their 2nd straight Central League pennant.

1902 PLAYOFFS
NIPPON LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP:
"REVENGE IS SWEET FOR THE MARINES"
Old foes met for the *** title as we had a rematch of last year's series to decide the champs. The Giants prevailed last year in a 4-1 romp, and Chiba Lotte got their sweet revenge doing the same to Yomiuri this season, winning the *** Championship in 5 games, 4 to 1. RF Takamasa Kawaii was named series MVP as one of Japan's best power hitters showed his stuff in the series, hitting 3 hrs and driving in 7 in the 5 games.

AWARD WINNERS

PACIFIC LEAGUE
MVP AWARD - 3b John "Mugsy" McGraw (Chiba Lotte Marines)
- 30yo / USA - *** MVP Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 140 g - 450 ab - .340 avg - 2 hr - 66 rbi - 113 r - 58 sb - .994 ops
- Career Stats: 286 g - 964 ab - .358 avg - 2 hr - 134 rbi - 232 r - 126 sb - 1.000 ops (int/2 yrs)
1341 g - 4880 ab - .343 avg - 15 hr - 617 rbi - 1281 r - 531 sb - .904 ops (career/11 yrs)
- Overview: Pretty big surpise here as most writers had either Elmer Flick, or McGraw's teammate Takamasa Kawaii as the favorites to win the award. But McGraw's PL lead in both Vorp, Runs Scored, SB & walks, as well as him being the catalyst for the *** Champion Marines must have influenced the voters, as Mugsy won the award for the 1st time in his career.

CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Sozui "Crash" Tomashino (Nippon Fighters)
- 32yo / Japan - *** CY YOUNG Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 31 g - 31 gs - 19-11 rec - 0 sv - 3.43 era - 254.2 ip - 104 bb - 199 k - 1.34 whip
- Career Stats: 93 g - 93 gs - 57-29 rec - 0 sv - 3.77 era - 741.2 ip - 286 bb - 622 k - 1.36 whip (int/3 yrs)
- Overview: Crash has consistently been one of the league leaders in wins over his 1st 3 seasons, but this year he became a more complete pitcher, posting career highes in ERA & IP, in which he led all of Japan. He still won 19 games, down from last year's 21, but still good enough for league lead, while ranking in the top 5 in the Pacific in ERA, Opp Avg, Strikeouts & Vorp.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - SP Christy "Big Six" Mathewson (Fukuoka Daiei Hawks)
- 22yo / USA - *** ROY Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 29 g - 29 gs - 12-12 rec - 0 sv - 3.27 era - 192.2 ip - 31 bb - 152 k - 1.25 whip
- Career Stats: 29 g - 29 gs - 12-12 rec - 0 sv - 3.27 era - 192.2 ip - 31 bb - 152 k - 1.25 whip (int/1 yr)
36 g - 36 gs - 15-14 rec - 0 sv - 2.99 era - 241.0 ip - 42 bb - 185 k - 1.20 whip (career/2 yrs)
- Overview: While only a .500 pitcher in his first full season, the former #1 overall pick in the 1900 MLB draft established himself as a future star. Ranking 4th in PL ERA & Whip and 1st in K/BB ratio as well as leading all *** rookie pitchers in every single pitching category, Mathewson is a star on the rise and has a Rookie of the Year trophy as his 1st on the mantle.

GOLD GLOVE AWARDS:
P - Katsunosuki Ma****a (Fukuoka Daiei Hawks) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1
C - Ed McFarland (Chiba Lotte Marines) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 2
1b - Mike "Turkey Mike" Donlin (Orix Buffaloes) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1
2B - Shirai Shimedzu (Tohoku Rakuten Ninjas) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1
3B - John "Mugsy" McGraw (Chiba Lotte Marines) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 2
SS - Juichi Kokawa (Orix Buffaloes) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1
LF - Jesse "Crab" Burkett (Tohoku Rakuten Ninjas) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1
CF - Morihiro "Fly by Night" Katagiri (Chiba Lotte Marines) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 2
RF - Takamasa Kawaii (Chiba Lotte Marines) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1

CENTRAL LEAGUE
MVP AWARD - SS Ed "Big Ed" Delahanty (Hanshin Tiger)
- 35yo / USA - *** MVP Awards: 2
- Season Stats: 126 g - 499 ab - .359 avg - 4 hr - 50 rbi - 83 r - 31 sb - .931 ops
- Career Stats: 252 g - 971 ab - .355 avg - 17 hr - 116 rbi - 178 r - 62 sb - .958 ops (int/2 yrs)
2049 g - 8423 ab - .343 avg - 110 hr - 1562 rbi - 1769 r - 460 sb - .905 ops (career/15 yrs)
- Overview: Big Ed becomes the 1st ever 2-time winner in my Baseball Universe, winning his 2nd straight *** CL MVP trophy, despite having numbers far worse than last season. Delahanty remains one of the best hitters in all of Japan, leading the Central in both Avg & Vorp and in the top 5 in OPS, hits & SBs, despite not getting much help from his teammates as again Hanshin was one of the worst team's in the *** despite Delahanty's performance.

CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Roger Hales (Chunichi Dragon)
- 26yo / USA - *** CY YOUNG Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 31 g - 31 gs - 18-9 rec - 0 sv - 2.75 era - 249.0 ip - 52 bb - 206 k - 1.16 whip
- Career Stats: 31 g - 31 gs - 18-9 rec - 0 sv - 2.75 era - 249.0 ip - 52 bb - 206 k - 1.16 whip (int/1 yr)
93 g - 93 gs - 49-26 rec - 0 sv - 3.52 era - 718.2 ip - 183 bb - 503 k - 1.24 whip (career/3 yrs)
- Overview: Hales was a solid pitcher in the MLB with Boston, going 31-17 in his 2 yrs but a high 3.93 era. He knew he would never be more than a #3-4 SP in the USA, so he decided to sign with the Dragon in the *** for a big money deal and to be a star. And in his 1st season in Japan, he showed how smart of a move it was as he took home the Central League's top pitching award. He didn't lead the CL in any 1 stat, but was among the top in ERA, wins, Whip, Strikeouts & Vorp, the only pitcher who could make such a claim.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - CF Francisco Mulert (Hiroshima Toyo Carp)
- 25yo / USA - *** ROY Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 136 g - 525 ab - .223 avg - 24 hr - 97 rbi - 57 r - 7 sb - .677 ops
- Career Stats: 136 g - 525 ab - .223 avg - 24 hr - 97 rbi - 57 r - 7 sb - .677 ops (int/1 yr)
282 g - 933 ab - .228 avg - 38 hr - 150 rbi - 108 r - 26 sb - .685 ops (career/3 yrs)
- Overview: The former power hitting prospect for the Mets spent 2 seasons with their minor league team, State College, in the IRL. He was part of the deal with Mike Ohler that Hiroshima acquired in dealing Nap Lajoie away. Thought as nothing but a throw in, Mulert proved to be much more with his raw power despite a simply horrible avg and strikeout total. He was as dominate vs. all *** rookie hitters as Mathewson was vs. all pitchers. He finished 5th & 4th respectively in HR & RBI in the Central, all despite hitting only .223. At only 25, he is hoping to improve his contact up to atleast .240-.250, allowing him to remain an everyday player while crushing HR after HR in Japan.

GOLD GLOVE AWARDS:
P - Daniel Sifuentez (Yomiuri Giants) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1
C - Frank "Husk" Chance (Yomiuri Giants) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1
1b - Noriaki Niura (Yomiuri Giants) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1
2B - Yoshihiro Ikeda (Hanshin Tiger) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1
3B - Jimmy Collins (Yakult Swallows) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 2
SS - Ed "Big Ed" Delahanty (Hanshin Tiger) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 2
LF - Amedeo Canio (Chunichi Dragon) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1
CF - Sen Tenno (Yakult Swallows) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 3
