You know, Marc, you could move just those posts to a new thread.

So what would be considered a good VORP, an Avg VORP, and a bad VORP?

Is there a figure you start from, say 50, and go up or down from there?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm trying to learn/understand how VORP works.

Tks

sorry in advance, Marc

Chapter 11 of The Book on The Book by Bill Fleber does a number on rating the GMs from 1999-2003. the best using his methods were Beane, Cashman, Jocketty, Schuerholz, and Sabean. the worst were Stoneman, Malone, Ricciardi, and Hunsicker.

3 main areas of concern:

1) Acquisitions (via trades, waivers, FA, re-signing, etc.)
2) Losses (via trades, waivers, FA, etc.)
3) Production (rookie drafts and international scouting)

all the above are broken down into short-term and long-term.

the keys to being the best:

1) Build for the long-term, not for the short-term
2) Build through FA, not through trade
3) If you decide to ignore #2, be a wheeler-dealer (in other words, trade only when you are getting the star you need, for the scrub/s you have)
4) The FA you get are far more important than the FA you lose
5) Quick improvement through the farm system is next to impossible

YMMV

Makes sense to me.

VORP is a rate stat.

A player who never plays has a 0 VORP.

An average VORP is generally around 15-20 for fulltime players.

A good VORP is generally 35+

A very good VORP is 50+

A great VORP is 75+

Bond's 2001 was 144.

Ummmm..a classic one game playoff in 95 for the division against the Mariners? The AL West has been a vastly superior division in comparison to the AL Central over the years. Put down the bottle Mr Cras. A laughing stock? They had their ups and down but had won 3 division titles from 79-01.

is that due to the conversion rate from UK to US?

Every division has been vastly superior to the AL Central. The AL Central has mainly been a one horse league, with the Indians for the 90's, the Twins in the 00's, and with the White Sox winning once every 7 years. But come on, did you really say at the beginning of 2002 that the Angels were going to win the World Series? Granted that calling them a laughing stock is a little over the top, but they were no where near the power that they have become since winning the World Series.

Wouldn't that make five UK screenshots = to 25 US screenshots, or has the USD made up some ground?

Absolutely right there. The Angels always had good players but terrible luck as an orginization. In Vaughns first game as an Angel he tumbled into the dugout and suffered a bizarre ankle injury that hurt his game.

The curse of Jackie Autry and to some extent Disney really hurt them.

I remembered the injury, but I forgot that it was in his first game in an Angel uniform. That is bad luck. That is Cub-like bad luck.

I'd like to have the All-Star awards to have their position listed next to them. Or even displayed like the awards with Mid-Seasons stats, etc.

You can almost think of them in the way you thought of the stars from older versions of OOTP except now it's a truly meaningful statistic.

Depends on what period you're looking at and how you define "superior." From 1994-1996 a balanced schedule was used in each league, making the divisional alignments arbitrary and effectively meaningless.

1997-2000 saw interleague play added which unbalanced the schedules somewhat, but divisional play was still a small component of the season. It's not until 2001 when divisional play was given a significant boost in the percentage of total games played.

LGO has a good point. Look back and you see that only the Angels have won the flag since the league broke into three divisions. The Central, has had Cleveland win twice and the White Sox last year. But I think it is safe to say that the West has been stronger than the Central. Until recently

One of the five has somehow ended up in aprils shots while the other four are in May
