In Miami for 3: June 2nd - 4th

The Jethawks left their archrival and headed off to Miami to play the Storm and the top team in the Dixie Division. The JetHawks are trying to turn things around against the tough teams and star to put some big "W"s up on the board...

June 2nd:
Ferdinand Fradera couldn't the luck that has followed with him all season long as the Jethawks couldn't come through with any timely hits. Walks killed once again...After batting 7th for the past few starts, Cuevas is moved to 3rd hole, but is unable to do anything more than crack a single.

MIL 2-8-0
MIA 3-7-0
W - J. Thompson (6-3)
L - F. Fradera (5-3)
S - M. Palmquist (6)

Cristobal Cuevas
Day: 1-4
Season: 11-34 .324, 2 2b, 1 HR, 5 R, 10 RBI, 4 BB, 5 K

June 3rd:
After losing a close one the day before the JetHawks were able to pull out a close one in game 2. Taking the game in 11innings, thanks to a 1 out 3B by Cristobal in the top of the 11th. He scored the winning run on a 2B by Robert Kujuwa on the next pitch. Cuevas moved down to the 6th hole, but it didn't seem to effect him as he got 3 hits and knocked in 1...One day he may find a permanent place in the lineup.

MIL 4-14-1
MIA 3-12-0 10 innings
W - D. Alvarez (1-2)
L - M. Palmquist( 2-1)
S - L. Felix (3)

Cristobal Cuevas
Day: 3-5 3B, 1 R, 1 RBI
Season: 14-39 .359, 2 2b, 1 3b, 1 HR, 6 R, 11 RBI, 4 BB, 5 K

June 4th:
What started out like a blow-out, as the JetHawks scored 5 in the top of the 1st to get the game started, ended in Misery as the JetHawks bullpen couldn't close it and gave up 6 runs in the bottom of the 9th. Cuevas returned to the #3 hole and continued his hot hitting, getting 2 more hits, including an RBI 2B in the 1st and a RBI single in the 6th. But it just wasn't enough...An oddity occured in this series as M. Palmquist, of Miami, recorded a win, a save and a loss...

MIL 7-13-4
MIA 8-14-1
W - M. Palmquist (3-1)
L - J. Atlas (1-3)

Cristobal Cuevas
Day: 2-5 2B, 1 R, 2 RBI
Season: 16-44 .364, 3 2b, 1 3b, 1 HR, 7 R, 13 RBI, 4 BB, 5 K

Omar Rivero - Miami Daily Herald

MIAMI JUNE 5th (AP)-
While the Milford JetHawks were here in Miami I had some time to sit down with Fernando Rojas and talk to him about life in Cuba.

When the head of a household gets up at dawn in present-day Cuba, he or she only faces two problems: lunch and dinner.

This somewhat bitter joke circulated in multiple sectors of the population in the early 1990's. The joke no longer seems funny. Conditions do not change, and the spark of cleverness has turned into a simmering fire.

Ordinary Cubans, who have no relatives in the United States, do not work in a foreign company or have no friends in a corporation, those Cubans who ride bicycles and get paid in national currency- the vast majority of the population- have to recur to three verbs which raise suspicion: "Inventar, resolver y escapar": To invent, to solve and to escape.

This is the formula. "Invento (I invent) because my cousin brings me hams from the countryside, and I sell them to my neighbors and my friends. The salary I make as a teacher lasts me the first ten days of the month, just like the products which I can buy under the ration card [libreta de abastecimientos]." So says Fernando, 38, married with two children, 11 and 6. Elia, his wife, works in a factory cafeteria, and can always bring something home, besides her monthly salary of 118 pesos (1).

"Clothing and shoes for the children are a tragedy. I do not know how, but I invent something, I have to invent"

Fernando's moonlighting makes him a criminal, because it is against Cuban law to engage in this type of commerce. The teacher does and is against the law, so he is careful; he feels at fault with society. Such a person cannot confront authority to claim his rights or demand respect. Thousands of Cubans, forced to engage in illegal work, such as Fernando, are effectively neutralized as citizens.

There is still a more complex category, linked to the verb resolver (to solve). "Guards from the factory steal ingredients. I make the paint in the back yard of a friend, and solve my problem. I make about a thousand pesos a month. It is risky. My freedom hangs from a thread [en un hilo], but I solve my family's problem and still have some money left to have a beer once in a while." Joel says that he is not interested in politics. He is 30, and feels well. Uneasy, but well.

To escape is something else. And escape is what Cristobal Cuevas and Fernando Rojas did last fall. Fernando, left behind his family to come to America in hopes for a better life. Fernando, now Cristobal Cuevas' translator, said "Leaving my wife and kids behind was something I never wanted to do, but I couldn't live like that anymore." He went on to say that Elia, just wasn't ready to run, she was scared of what might happen if they didn't make it. "What could be worse", exclaimed Fernando.

Leaving family behind on the island is something that many Cuban defectors do. Part of the reason Cubans defect is for a new life, and another part is to be able to give more to their loves ones back home. Fernando now sends at least $100 a week back to Elia and his kids, its not a lot, but for Elia it makes a world of difference. "I left Cuba so I could have a new life. I want to see my wife and kids one day, and I know that day will come soon. Until then I will send as much money as I can to them. They are my family and I miss them, and it will always be my job to take care of them."

As hard as it sounds, as tough as it might be, when you grow up on the Island of Cuba you are ready for anything.

The Braves from Rome Georiga, come to town for 3

With a 2 game lead on the Rome Braves in the battle of last place the JetHawks welcomed the Braves to Milford in hopes to add some breathing room. What they could not fathom was getting sweepted back into last place...

June 6th:
Bernie Partida pitched a good game and kept it close, and after 7 innings the JetHawks were knocking on the door step down 3-1...Then the floodgates opened and the Braves scored 8 runs in the last 2 innings, turning a close game into a blow-out. Cristobal Cuevas batting in the #3 hole, went 0-3 with a BB.

MIL 1-7-0

Season: 16-47 .340, 3 2b, 1 3b, 1 HR, 7 R, 13 RBI, 5 BB, 5 K

June 7th:
Another game another loss, and the Dixie Division has a tie for last place. Milford unable to get anything going, blew a solid pitching performance by Tyrone Sauceda. The JetHawks bats were held quiet. Cristobal Cuevas was held hitless again, going 0-2 in the 6th spot.

June 8th:
Ferdinand Fradera who has been on of the luckiest starts in the GBF struggled again. Completely losing the strike zone, and walking 3 hitters in a 5-run 2nd inning for the Braves. The JetHawks bats were held to only 5 hits and just 18 for the 3-game series. Cristobal Cuevas got two of those 5-hits, including a double, but neither were any help. The JetHawks now fall into last place in the Dixie Division, 1 game behind the Braves.

The Bronx Bombers visit for a 4 game series

June 12:
In a tough defeat the JetHawks lose to the Bombes in 13 innings. Aaron Tyler gave up two solo shots in the top half of the 9th and the JetHawks were unable to answer. Milford starter Tyrone Sauceda gave it his all giving up 3 runs in 10 Ip on 6 hits. Cristobal who has been on a hitting tear went 3-4 with 2 doubles, driving in 1 with a double in the 3rd.

June 13:
Mike Huck got his first win since being traded to the JetHawks, as the pitching staff held the Bombers to 3-runs. The JetHawks used timely hitting and a 3-run homer by Geoffery Bonci in the bottom of the 8th to take home the victory.

Lets Play 2...Off to Elmira for a quick 2 game set

June 16:
A day after getting 10 hits for only 2 runs the JetHawks exploded for 12 runs on 15 hits. Making the most out of your hits, something the JetHawks have not been doing this season. Bill Schnieder became the 3rd JetHawk in 4 games with a 5 RBI. And Cristobal Cuevas kept his hitting streak going with an early single.

MIL 12-15-1
ELM 3-5-5
W - B. Partida (6-5)

June 17:
Another another player with 5 RBI's. For the 4th time in 5 games the JetHawks had a player drive in 5 runs and help secure victory, this time it was Santo "The Saint" Batista's turn (previously Geoffery Bonci, Kent Cohen and Bill Schneider). The Saints 5 RBI's helped Tyrone Sauceda to a complete game victory. Cristobal had to settle or an 0-fer and the end to his 8 game hitting streak.

MIL 6-9-2
ELM 1-7-0
W - T. Sauceda (7-5)
L - R. Pascoe (5-7)

INJURY NEWS: After the game the JetHawks placed second basemen Earl Larson on the 15-day DL. He was hurt in the 2nd inning while running the bases. Earl the teams starting secondbasemen will be replaced on the roster by Hot prospect Billy Green. Green will most likely start at shortstop and starting shortstop Jason Ball will move over to 2nd.

Mastcots come to Milford for 2

June 18:
The JetHawks feel behind early, then made a late rally to tie, just to lose in 10. After falling back 5-2, the JetHawks scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game. But that momentum wasn't enough to stop the Madrid Mascots as they scored 1 in the top of the 10th for the victory. Cristobal Cuevas playing LF tonight, made his first error of the season.

MAD 6-9-0
MIL 5-13-3 10 innings
W - J. Jackson (3-5)

Season: 32-88 .364, 6 2b, 1 3b, 1 HR, 15 R, 19 RBI, 14 BB, 9 K

June 19th:
Rested after the flight home and ready for the day off tomorrow, the JetHawks exploded on the Madrid pitching staff. Cracking 14 hits and scoring 10 runs...and with the red hot arm of Scott Sardina the JetHawks came home victors for the series split. Cristobal continued his hot hitting, including a 2-run double in the 8th.

MAD 1-8-2
MIL 10-14-1

INJURY NEWS: For the 2nd time in 3 days the JetHawks had to place a starter on the 15-day DL. Bill Schnieder, the starting DH, was hit in the head while at bat, he has been diagnosed with a concussion and will miss at least 10-days. The JetHawks with 12 pitchers on the Roster placed Schnieder on th 15-day DL to open up a roster spot. The JetHawks announced they will recall Robert Parrish. Parrish was sent down at the end of April after hitting only .158 (9-48). He will see limited action as a left-fielder, DH and left-handed bat off the bench.

June 20th an Off Day - Letter Home

June 20th

Dear Mama-

Hi mama. I hope this letter finds you well. I am sorry I haven't written you much since I left, but I have been really busy here.

I made it! I am up with the big club, mama, I know papa would be proud. I hope you are. I am sorry I left, but I felt like I had no other choice. I am the starting right-fielder for the Milford JetHawks. I started the season in the minors, but before the end of the 2nd month I was up here. I really should of been up here all season, but I am happy that I made it.

The team isn't as good as the teams I am used to playing on, but we are getting better. There are a lot of good people around me. Its been tough, since I am not that fluent in English, but Fernando has been a big help. There are only 5 players on the team that speak some-type of Spanish.

Fernando got a job with the JetHawks as my translator, which is nice since he is just like my big-brother. Its funny mama, I am like the big star around town. Its been fun, but tiresome. I hope it gets easier as I show how good I am and the season progresses.

Mama I missed baseball so much. I am so glad I am back playing. I hope you understand why I left. I miss you dearly, and I hope we will see each other soon. Tell Nina I miss her, and please explain to her that my decision to leave was the best decision. I know you think so.

Please write me back, let me know how you and Nina are. I miss you very much, more than I can explain. Thank goodness for baseball. I will write soon. Ti Amo.

Love & Miss You,

CC

Struggles with the Toronto Titans

June 21:
Behind another struggling performance by Walter Smith the JetHawks feel behind early and never could fight back. Walter Smith lost for the 12th time, allowing 5 runs in 4 2/3 innings. When the games start of bad its hard to come back. Cristobal Cuevas showed off his Home-Run swing hitting a blast in the top of the 3rd.

June 22:
Two bad pitches by Bernie Partida led to this loss. If Bernie could take back those two pitches in the 3rd inning the outcome would of been different. Bernie gave up back-to-back home runs, the first a 3-run blast, which took the wind of the JetHawks sails and sent them to another loss.

Trying to salvage one game of this four game set, the JetHawks had young-gun Ferdinand Fradera on the hill. One of the luckiest pitchers for the JetHawks this season. His luck wasn't with him, nor was his control, 4 2/3 innings later he was heading to the beach and the JetHawks were down 4. Unable to make a comeback the JetHawks go home losing all 4. On a bright note, Cristobal Cuevas went 2-3 with a 2b and HR raising his average back up to .370.

Looking for Momentum into the All-Star Break...

June 25th:
The Bella Coona Trappers started to close in as they scored 1 in the top of the 7th to make it a 5-4 game, but the JetHawks answered that with a 4-run bottom of the 7th, capped off by an 2-run Cristobal Cuevas double. Season: 42-112 .375, 9 2b, 1 3b, 3 HR, 24 R, 26 RBI, 19 BB, 10 K

June 26th:
Walter Smith on the brink of losing his job, came through with a quality start. Going 7 2/3 innings allowing 5 hits and 3 runs. And thanks to 3-runs in the bottom of the 7th (an RBI 2B by Santo Batista and a 2-run blast by Kent Cohen) he was able to walk away with the victory.

BCT 3-6-1
MIL 6-12-0
W - W. Smith (3-12)
L - R. Deschamps (4-6)
S - L. Felix (4)

Cristobal Cuevas:
Day 0-4 R, BB, K
Season: 42-116 .362, 9 2b, 1 3b, 3 HR, 25 R, 26 RBI, 20 BB, 11 K

June 27th:
The JetHawks looking to go into the All-Star break with a sweep of the Trappers, took a 7-3 lead into the ninth...Then the bullpen let them down again. Giving up 4 runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 7. The 4 run top of the 9th wasn't enough to take all the momentum. With one out Santo Batista singled to right, Anderson Hulbert was brought in to pinch-run and promptly stole second base. With 0 outs and a runner on 2nd, the Trappers intentionally walk Cristobal Cuevas, already 3-4 on the day, to put runners on first and second. In an act of being over-agressive, manager Anthony Wayne put on the steal sign, and Hulbert and Cuevas moved up safely. The next batter Johnnie Shipton hit a short pop-up to left-field and Hulbert tagged up. It was a close play, but not close enough for the Trappers and the JetHawks took the series and the final game of the 1st half of the season.

BCT 7-12-1
MIL 8-13-1
W - J. Atlas (2-3)
L - P. Berube (0-1)

Cristobal Cuevas:
Day 3-4 2B, SB, R, RBI, BB
Season: 45-120 .375, 10 2b, 1 3b, 3 HR, 26 R, 27 RBI, 20 BB, 11 K, 3 SB

Tuesday - June 29th 2001 . 2nd Annual All-Star Game

The Pacific Conference All-Stars were looking to exact revenge on the Atlantic Conference All-Stars after losing the innagural affair last season.

It was a close game till, the PC All-Stars broke it open in the bottom of the 5th on a 3-run David Lappin double, and took the lead 5-1. In the 7th, David Lappin's replacement, James Dorsey hit a solo homerun for an added insurance, that turned out not be necessary. The PC pitching staff was just to tough on this day, at least too tough on the AC bats when they had their opportunities. The AC bats had some opporunities (10 hits and 1 walk), but weren't able to get the hits when they counted.

AC All-Stars: 2-10-0
PC All-Stars: 5-7-1
All-Time Series is now 1-1
W - G. Hayhurst (Taipei Reds)
L - M. Herreros (New Orleans Crawdads)
S - R. Vanscoy (Portland Beavers)

HR: PC: J. Dorsey (Puerto Rico Tiano)

POG: D. Lappin (Colorado Springs Lookouts) 1-2 2b 3-RBI

Stadium: French Quarter Stadium home of the New Orleans Crawdads
Attendence: 52,918

On a side Notes: The Milford JetHawks, for the 2nd straight year, did not send anyone to the All-Star game.

Bronx Bombers 41 40 .506 1.0 12th
Elmira Knights 36 45 .444 6.0 30th
Not much new in the North East Division. Last year it was a race betweent the Patriots and the Clippers, and this year it looks like it will be the same.

Code:
Dixie Division
Team W L PCT GB Power

Milford Jethawks 36 45 .444 14.0 28th
Rome (GA) Braves 36 45 .444 14.0 29th
The Miami Storm are on their way to knocking off the defending Conference champs in New Orleans. Miami is the team to beat in the Dixie Division...Not only is there a race to win, but the JetHawks are in a race to stay out of last. The worse team in the GBF last year are trying to not to finish last this year.

Code:
Canada Division
Team W L PCT GB Power
Bella Coona Trappers 51 30 .630 - 4th
Montreal X-Pres 41 40 .506 10.0 8th
St. Anthony Dragons 40 41 .494 11.0 11th
Toronto Titans 38 43 .469 13.0 24th
Bella Coona who finished 7 games off hte lead last season, has opened up a nice 10 game lead this year. As the Defending Division champs, Montreal, try not to fall too far off the pace.

Code:
Europe Division
Team W L PCT GB Power
Dublin Green 45 36 .556 - 6th
Pompeii Valcanoes 40 41 .494 5.0 22nd
Madrid Mascots 38 43 .469 7.0 26th
Hamburg Brewers 30 51 .370 15.0 31st
Pompeii was the team to beat in the Europe Division last season, but this year they will have their hands full as the Dublin Green try to take the Division crown. This should be a good battle till the end.

Mexico City Warriors 39 42 .481 4.0 18th
Last season the Mexico Division gave us the most exciting race in the league, and this season it looks to be the same. 5 games seperated 1st to last, with a tie for 1st, so this is a division to keep an eye on for the last 1/2 of the season. (on a side note Puerto Rico fell from 5th to 21st in the lastest power poll)

Hawaii Rainbow Warriors 39 42 .481 3.0 25th
Taipei Reds 32 49 .395 10.0 32nd
Last year saw the Gold Diggers make a 10 game swing on the Taipei Reds in the final month of the season...This season the Gold Diggers have kept the momentum up, as they hold on to a 1 game lead, and the Reds have continued to collaspe, as they have kept a hold on the 32nd spot in the power rankings, almost all season.
