UoLBA Heavyweight Title Fight - 1890

CHICAGO - Not an empty seat can be found tonight in Chicago's Soldier Field. A restless capacity crowd awaits the commencement of tonight's fight between The Benicia Boy, John C. Heenan and Canadian slugger John J. Dwyer to determine the first ever Heavyweight title belt holder in the UoLBA.

Each fighter enters tonight's contest with a flawless record. Each has dominated all comers to date. Each predicts victory tonight. Both Heenan and Dwyer are said to be in top shape for this match, certainly the most important in either fighter's young career to date.

A roar from the crowd signals the appearance of John Dwyer's entourage as it approaches the ring. Dwyer appears confident as he greets fans along his route to destiny. Dwyer enters the ring, and prepares to go to work.

Moments later, John Heenan makes his appearance, and it is immediately evident that the American carries the adoration of a good majority of tonight's audience. Heenan is practically mobbed as he makes his way to the ring.

Ring announcer Chuck Hall makes a theatrical but largely unnecessary introduction of the two fighters to thunderous applause from the delirious crowd. After final instructions from Referee Ernesto Magana, Heenan and Dwyer retreat to their respective corners in anticipation of the opening bell.

Round 1 - Both fighters appear to have thrown caution to the wind, each coming out with blood in his eye. Dwyer wings a wild left at the head of Heenan that misses badly. Dwyer's lunging swing leaves him vulnerable to Heenan's deadly right, and Heenan wastes no time deploying it, hurting Dwyer with a wicked right cross. A follow-up cross connects, and Dwyer rocks back, no doubt regretting his reckless advance. Only a minute has passed in the round, and already the action is furious. Heenan presses his advantage and manuevers Dwyer to the corner. The crowd roars as Heenan throws a flurry of punches, but most of them bounce off of the arms of Dwyer. The Canadian waits for an opening and sends a right hook slamming flush into the jaw of Heenan. Heenan is staggered by that bomb. Heenan backs up, throwing defensive punches to keep his opponent at bay. Dwyer advances on Heenan, trying to land another damaging blow. Dwyer swings and misses, and Heenan digs a solid jab to Dwyer's midsection. Dwyer slows a little. In the final minute of round 1, both men are throwing less and moving more, an evident result of each feeling the power of the other. At 2:38 in the round, Heenan sends a smashing hook to the side of Dwyer's head. Dwyer is suddenly in trouble. Dwyer clinches and holds on until his head clears. The round ends to thunderous applause from an appreciative crowd at ringside. The round is probably Heenan's, but not by much. It remains to be seen if the powerful blows each fighter absorbed will have lasting effects in later rounds.

Round 2 - Both fighters appear to begin the round in good shape. Dwyer manuevers Heenan into a corner. Dwyer delivers a short clean hook flush to the jaw of Heenan. Oh my - Heenan has dropped to the canvas like he's been poleaxed. Magana begins the count...

6...7...8...




9...10!!!


Heenan has not stirred! Dwyer's shot has sent The Benicia Boy to a tea party with Mr. Sand Man.

The winner by knockout at the 0:33 mark in Round 2, and NEW UoLBA WORLD CHAMPION OF THE WORLD, John J DWYER!!!

Well Mark, I hope you didn't have a lot of money wagered...

Incidentally, I meant to tell you - you were selected by TB2 as the ringside scorer in one of those first round matches of the tourney - I think it was Slavin vs. McDonald. I guess I better get the check in the mail for your efforts.

I went back and reviewed details of the bout this morning - I missed a comment on pre-fight conditioning. Evidently, Heenan had been indulging in his passion for bon bons between his fight with Rahman and his bout with Dwyer. He came in a bit pudgy. Could be why he wilted under Dwyer's assault.

No doubt a rematch is upcoming once Heenan is ready.

July 1890 Fights Announced

BONNER SPRINGS, KS - The Universe of Leather Boxing Association has announced July 1890 bouts. The UoLBA is under contract until September of this year to hold all bouts in the following 3 locations: Soldier Field in Chicago, which will get top choice; Olympia Stadion in Berlin which will get second choice; and The Cow Palace in San Francisco, which will get third choice. These exclusive contracts will expire after August matches, at which time UoLBA bouts will again be up for bid.

July 1890 results from The Cow Palace

SAN FRANCISCO - A rowdy fight crowd saw Joe Goss dismantle Sailor Charles Brown in the main event here tonight. Brown stubbornly kept his feet despite a non-stop pummelling by Goss, and left it for the referee Fred Hernandez to halt the rout in the middle of the 7th round. Despite no knockdowns or cuts, Goss handily won every round against the game but toothless challenger. Goss moves to 16th in the UoLBA.

In other action, Peter Courtney continued his climb in the ranks to #15 with a majority decision over Jack Welsh. This was both fighters second fight of 1890, both fights against each other, and both matches decision wins for Courtney. Ringside scorers had the fight a lopsided win for Courtney, but somehow one of the Judges called it even.

Harry Woodson cried foul after receiving a draw in his match with Jim Harvey. "Everyone knows I mopped the floor with him" stated the Black Diamond, and indeed, many observers did feel Woodson won this match. No word on a rematch.

Go ahead and gush Mat. I felt the same way when I stumbled onto this site in October '04. As a long-time fan of the board game (since 1979), my jaw dropped when I found it. The people here are great and I am also glad to see new faces (so to speak)

BERLIN - It started out as a night of upsets, with favorites Bob McIntyre, Joe Lannon and Joe Goddard tasting defeat at the hands of lesser-ranked opponents. It was a particularly bitter setback for McIntyre and Goddard, each of whom loomed at the edge of the top 20 prior to tonight, and each with aspirations of great things in the division.

Joe Coburn almost joined the list of upset contenders tonight, as a Greenfield right dropped him to the canvas for an 8 count in the third round. Coburn lasted the round and came back to deliver a good-night kiss of his own to the jaw of Greenfield in the 8th frame.

McCaffrey for his part continues his climb in the ranks with an impressive thrashing of overmatched Charlie O'Donnell. McCaffrey jumped from 21st to 13th in UoLBA rankings as a result of his victory.

Chicago - The buzz after tonight's fights was not about the main event, where Peter Maher easily dispatched challenger John Clow to move to 27th in the UoLBA, it was about the tremendous contest between Joe Choyinski and Jimmy Elliott. Elliott has been very vocal so far about his pitiful ranking this year in the UoLBA, and tonight he was out to prove his mettle. Choyinski, an up and comer at 24 in the rankings, was on the edge of contention.

Choyinski dominated the early rounds, chasing Elliott with several hard shots. Elliott, true to his developing image as the UoLBA's "Bad Boy", kept the referee busy with warnings, and lost a point in the 5th for a rabbit punch. But by the 8th, Choyinski was beginning to fade, and evidence of overtraining started to become apparent. Elliot finally found paydirt in the 9th, dropping the Chrysanthemum for a quick 1 count, and again in the 10th for a six count. Choyinski hung tough, but the third shot, a thunderous right in the 11th, was more than he could absorb, and Choyinski failed to rise from the canvas, ending the match and handing Elliot his ticket into the top 25 for the first time this year. The referee's scorecards after the bout showed an even match before round 11.

August 1890 Fights Announced

BONNER SPRINGS, KS - Fight cards were announced today for August action in the UoLBA. Soldiers Field in Chicago, Olympia Stadion in Berlin and The Cow Palace in San Francisco are the hosting venues for August's fight cards. UoLBA venue contracts expire after the August matches - new venues will be selected next month for the balance of 1890.

Soldiers Field is proud to announce the signing of August's Main Event, featuring the first title defense of the UoLBA, between undefeated champ John J. Dwyer (26-0) and 5th ranked challenger James Dalton (21-2-1). The only blemish on Dalton's record is a 10th round KO at the hands of John C. Heenan in June's UoLBA tournament. While Dalton is not as highly regarded as some fighters in the division, he represents a dangerous and powerful foe, as is evidenced by his 2nd round KO of Bill Bradburn earlier this year. Rounding out Soldiers Field fight card: Joe Coburn #23 (21-0-1) faces Denver Ed Smith #31 (21-1-0); Peter Maher #32 (21-1-0) vs. Joe Lannon #85 (11-7-5); Alonzo Johnson #63 (21-2-0) battles Steve Taylor #53 (18-2-1); McHenry Johnson #13 (19-2-2) meets Tom Lees #73 (20-2-1); and Roy Clark #55 (21-2-0) goes up against Jack Stewart #99 (8-10-4).

August 1890 results from The Cow Palace

SAN FRANCISCO - Frank Slavin continues his rise in the ranks tonight with a thorough victory over fellow countryman Bill Doherty. Early in the bout, both fighters were landing bombs at will to the delight of the capacity crowd. Doherty rocked Slavin several times early with his powerful right, but Slavin himself did steady damage to Doherty's face throughout. The balance began to tilt to Slavin in the 4th, as Doherty started to slow. Slavin dumped Doherty to the canvas for the first time in the 6th, and ol' Bill was never the same thereafter. By round 9, Doherty's face was a mass of swelling, his hands starting to drop with fatigue. Slavin took advantage, finding the way clear for his ruthless fists, and sending Doherty to the mat 3 times in the round, the third ending the fight and giving Slavin a TKO victory.

In other bouts, two undefeateds continue to climb as well, as Jim Harvey dispatches Jack McAuley in the Co-feature, and Peter Courtney improves to 23-0 with his KO of Charles Lang.

August 1890 results from Olympia Stadion

BERLIN - Where last month's German fans witnessed a night of upsets, tonight's bouts belonged to the favorites.

The Main Event featured a thorough dismantling of Charlie McDonald at the hands of Peter Jackson. Jackson won every single round of the match en route to tonight's Main Even victory. McDonald, for his part, showed his toughness by keeping his feet throughout, despite the pummelling. But after 6 and a half rounds of carnage, the referee had seen enough, stopping the fight and awarding a victory to Jackson.

In other action, top-twenty fighter Joe Goss dispatched J.H. Brown in an 8th round TKO win. The fight was stopped when Brown kissed the canvas for the third time in the round.

August 1890 results from Soldiers Field

CHICAGO - John J. Dwyer successfully defended his UoLBA title with an 8th round TKO of challenger James Dalton tonight. Dwyer was in peak form tonight, and the hapless challenger was battered from the opening bell. Dalton drop to the canvas three times in the contest, and was nothing more than a punching bag when referee Hugh Macintosh stopped the bout at 1:33 in the 8th. Dwyer's tenacious defense of his title will make contenders think twice before entering the ring with him in future months.

In other action, Joe Coburn remains undefeated with a 6th round TKO of Denver Ed Smith. Smith was the unfortunate recipient of a head butt in the 2nd that took some of the steam out of his evening. Coburn, however, was superior throughout.

Peter Maher continues his climb up the ranks with a 10 round UD over Joe Lannon. Maher won every round on every judges card but one.

I'm still tinkering just a little with my randomizer for the monthly matches, but I think I just about have it. The system puts out some surprise match-ups, and somewhat simulates real-life frustrations of good boxers who can't get a shot, for whatever reason. Take for instance, poor Jimmy Elliot, toiling in the middle of the rankings. No one wants to fight him in the top-tier, because he is an obvious contender. But the system as I have it set up right now, the higher the "draw" of a fighter, the more fight possibilities he theoretically has, as he has more random number possibilities. So a guy who has a higher draw factor (a formula derived from TBCB Draw score + W/L record + ranking) also likely has more than one match to choose from. If Elliot is one of those choices, chances are he will duck him unless it is the only match rolled up for him in that month. And since Elliot's current ranking is pretty low and his TBCB draw score is nothing special, he will have to get a break in my bout scheduler to get any kind of decent match.

Conversely, a guy can sometimes get lucky, as Chet Shandel just found out, and land a match against an inferior top-10er who, despite the much higher ranking, has a lower drawing power. So Shandel, who is ranked in the mid-20's but undefeated, gets to fight Duncan McDonald this upcoming month, ranked 9th but has a combined "draw" rating a couple of ticks below Shandel. Also, you'll see that Hasim Rahman this month has a challenging bout against a tough Jack Boylan, but this is only because it was the only match Rahman had to choose from, so that's the one he signed for. Lots of fun.

September 1890 Fight Cards Announced

September sees a changeover in Universe of Leather Boxing Association hosting venues. The three new venues will have exclusive rights to host all UoLBA fights for the balance of 1890. Forbes Field in Pittsburgh has won the right to host UoLBA's premiere fight card for each of the next 4 months; Vancouver's Exhibition Gardens will get the second tier card, and Scammon Street in Scammon, Kansas, will host the third.

Forbes Field is happy to announce the signing of 2nd ranked Heavyweight John C. Heenan 25-1-0 (23) to the top of September's fight card. 8th ranked Leroy Jones 20-1-1 (6) will be the Benicia Boy's foe in the match. Other bouts:

That is an interesting and well thought out system for matchups you have Matt. I am enjoying your Universe and Hoping Joe Choynski can make a run at the top 10.

Thanks Lee. Choynski was climbing (24th) but then had the misfortune of drawing Elliott a couple of months back and didn't last the fight. A couple of good matches should get him back in the hunt.
