DAILY DOWN-TO-THE-WIRE DIVISION RECAPS
THE ISLANDIAN TIMES Sunday, September 16, 2057 STJ CRUSADERS CLAIM RU SOUTH FLAG All St. John (87-66) needed was a win today in their game against Wynnamac (81-72) or a loss by its only challenger, the Crystal Lake Skippers (85-68)... the Crusaders went out and did the job themselves with a 10-1 shellacking of the Sundowners... Tom Smithson (16-13/3.37) stopped the Macs on the mound and his teammates supported him at the plate with 12 hits... they routed Wynnamac 37-year-old ace Sammy Hayes (16-17/3.67), led by 2B Laine Goodwyne with four hits and three RBIs... St. John has a two-game edge with only one game left in the season... this is the 9th time the Crusaders have graced the IPA Pro Cup playoffs... the last time they participated was 2050... St. John will be seeking its first Pro Cup trophy in its history. Last edited by Eugene Church; 05-22-2018 at 08:38 PM. |

DAILY DOWN-TO-THE-WIRE DIVISION RECAPS
THE ISLANDIAN TIMES Sunday, September 16, 2057 CL SKIPPERS ELIMINATED IN RU SOUTH RACE The Crystal Lake Skippers did all they could... they won their game, but so did RU South champion St. John as the Crusaders cinched the division crown... the Skippers' top pitcher Merle Pitts (19-13/2.90) whipped the Sugar Valley Rattlers 6-2, backed up by a 13-hit attack, which punished 21-game winner Elvis Bonham (21-15/3.40)... SS Gib Conlon (.277/24 HR/101 RBI) had a perfect 4-4 day and three RBIs... 3B Jasper Shackleford (.293/21 HR/74 RBI) homered and had three hits... and CF Mel Brouwer (.308/23 HR/92 RBI) added three hits, too... finally Crystal Lake has run out of games, but it was a good run for the second place Skippers. |

DAILY DOWN-TO-THE-WIRE DIVISION RECAPS
THE ISLANDIAN TIMES Sunday, September 16, 2057 WOLVES STILL UP BY ONE GAME IN TU EAST Despite its loss yesterday, Midway (86-67) is still in the driver's seat in the Tycobbian East Division... all the Wolves need on the last day of the season is a victory over San Alejo (62-91) or a loss by second place Red Bluff (85-68) to Mahaska (73-80) in order to win their 5th straight pennant and a coveted spot in the IPA playoffs... the other contender, the third place High Mesa Mustangs (84-69), were knocked out of the pennant chase when they were blanked 5-0 by the playoff-bound Oxford Red Caps (88-65), the Tycobbian North Division champion... their ace Maury Stadler, 26-10 this season with a fine 2.94 ERA, put the Mustangs out of the race... Stadler tops the IPA in wins. Yesterday, the Wolves had the misfortune to go up against one of the all-time great IPA pitcher, Matt Bell... at age 37 and playing with a bad team, Bell went 15-17 this season with a strong 2.68 ERA... he is number two on the all-time most wins list with a fantastic 391-225 record in his career with the Montaneros and a terrific 2.42 ERA for 19 seasons... Bell showed he still has the right stuff by tossing a complete game and beating powerful Midway 7-1, outpitching 20-game winner Charlie Chase (20-12/3.04) and keeping the Wolves from nailing down the pennant... Bell gave up 11 hits, but stranded 10 baserunners in the game... the Monties tagged Chase for four runs in seven innings... he left trailing 4-1. DAILY DOWN-TO-THE-WIRE DIVISION RECAPS
THE ISLANDIAN TIMES Sunday, September 16, 2057 RED SOX LOSE 7TH IN A ROW, YET STILL IN RACE In spite of a horrendous seven-game losing streak, Red Bluff (85-68) has managed to cling to the coattails of the Midway Wolves (86-67) in the fight for the Tycobbian East Division flag... the Middies have played poorly, too, and dropped three of their last four games... the Red Sox lost another important game yesterday on the road to the Mahaska Haymakers 7-2... Marty Mobley (14-21/3.35) easily outpitched 22-game winner Duane Sturgeon (22-12/2.90), stopping the Red Sox on six hits... a fifth-place club, the Haymakers (73-80) knocked him out in four innings, scoring six runs... in all, Mahaska pounded out 14 hits. DAILY DOWN-TO-THE-WIRE DIVISION RECAPS
THE ISLANDIAN TIMES Sunday, September 16, 2057 REDS TAKE LEAD IN TU WEST, REDBIRDS FALTER The IPA teams with the best overall records are both in the same division, the Tycobbian West... and only one game separates them heading into the last game of the regular season... the first place Rolling Hills Reds (94-59) are one game ahead of the second place Denton City (93-60) Redbirds... the Reds rallied in the late innings to overcome the seventh place Ozarka Naturals 5-3, while the Redbirds were beaten by the North Hills Hawks 6-4... thanks to a solid performance by Vance Dillaway (20-16/3.40), who rang up his 20th win of the season, Rolling Hills has the division lead... it's the first time in Dillaway's career he has reached that milestone... he won 19 games two years ago and 18 last season... Dillaway went the distance, striking out six and walking three, while permitting only six hits... the big blow of the game came in the four-run sixth on rookie C Lee Fountain's (.300/9 HR/71 RBI) three-run homer... Ozarka's Willis Reece (17-18/2.91) tossed a complete game and gave the Reds fits for the first five shutout innings... but they burned him in the sixth. DAILY DOWN-TO-THE-WIRE DIVISION RECAPS
THE ISLANDIAN TIMES Sunday, September 16, 2057 REDBIRDS FALL PREY TO HAWKS' ROOKIE A rookie, who has only been in the IPA for about a month, played havoc with the formidable Denton City Redbirds (93-60), beating them 6-4... 23-year-old Eddy Salem (4-0/2.50) knocked them out of a first-place tie with the Rolling Hills Reds (94-59) and just might have cost them the pennant... in just his fifth start of the season, Salem shut down the mighty Redbirds on two runs and seven hits in eight innings... Salem struck out eight and walked just two batters... he gave the Hawks a 6-2 lead heading into the ninth and North Hills hung on to win. |

Yes, the Mustangs were eliminated from pennant contention... they lost to 5-0 to the playoff-bound Oxford Red Caps.
The game wrap-up was included in the Midway game recap. DAILY DOWN-TO-THE-WIRE RECAPS
THE ISLANDIAN TIMES Monday, September 17, 2057 DOWN-TO-THE-WIRE... AND BEYOND If you are a baseball true fan, it don't get any better than this... four teams going head-to-head in a single game with their whole season riding on the results... the last two playoff spots will be decided on the diamond with the contenders playing one another... In the TU East, Red Bluff won on the final day of the season, Midway didn't... over in the TU West, Denton City won on the last day of the season, Rolling Hills didn't... now the Wolves and the Reds are forced to a sudden-death game to wrap up the division title and gain a spot in the postseason playoffs. MIDWAY FALLS AGAIN TO MONTIES, PLAYOFF FORCED In the tense Tycobbian East, poor Midway lost all three games to San Alejo (63-91), a last place team, and will now have to whip arch-rival Red Bluff to secure a spot in the Pro Cup Playoffs... youngster Elmer Cane (11-15/3.27) wasn't great, but effective... he whipped the hard-hitting Wolves 6-4, went the route and gave up seven hits... Will DeBerry (18-17/3.24) took the loss, slammed for six runs in seven innings... the Montaneros built up a solid 6-1 lead and then held off the Wolves... Midway will get the homefield advantage... the game is slated this afternoon at Joe Wolf Stadium. Last edited by Eugene Church; 05-24-2018 at 06:28 PM. |

DAILY DOWN-TO-THE-WIRE RECAPS
THE ISLANDIAN TIMES Monday, September 17, 2057 RED SOX TIE MIDWAY FOR 1ST PLACE The Red Bluff Red Sox (86-68) lived to fight another day, winning on the last day to the season to tie the Midway Wolves (86-68) for first place in the Tycobbian East Division... the Red Sox's 10-5 triumph over the sixth place Mahaska Haymakers (73-81) gave them another chance at the division crown in tomorrow's sudden-death game against Wolves. The Red Sox's big bats won the day with Toni Kolkov (.280/36 HR/92 RBI) socking three hits and driving in three runs... it was his 36th clout of the season... Monty Lyons (.294/19/94 RBI) and Jason Hunsinger (.273/10 HR/49 RBI) also helped out with two ribbies each... Red Bluff also took advantage of five errors by the Haymakers... winning pitcher Wilson Sharpe (20-16/2.99) labored a bit, tagged for five runs in his eight innings, but got the job done... loser Kerstan Koening (11-11/3.86) deserved better... six of his seven runs were not earned... in fact, nine of the 10 runs were unearned. DAILY DOWN-TO-THE-WIRE RECAPS
THE ISLANDIAN TIMES Monday, September 17, 2057 HANCOCK SLOWS DOWN REDS' PLAYOFF HOPES The Rolling Hills Reds (94-60) could have wrapped up the Tycobbian West yesterday with a win in the final game of the regular season, but they ran into Ozarka's 19-year-old rookie Ezra Hancock (10-3/2.91), who twirled the game of his life, blanking the Reds 2-0 on a 5-hitter... Hancock spoiled the pennant-winning party scheduled for Rolling Hills... the loss enabled the Denton City Redbirds (94-60) to catch the Reds and tie them for the top spot in the TU West... this afternoon it's a winner-take-all sudden-death game to decide the division champion. Rolling Hills got a strong start from P. J. Dunham (21-9/3.95), but the veteran got outpitched by Hancock, who fired eight innings, fanned five batters and walked only one... Dunham worked a complete game, allowed only two runs on seven hits... SS Andre Radford (.222/6 HR/24 RBI) two-run shot in the eighth frame decided the pitching duel. |

DAILY DOWN-TO-THE-WIRE RECAPS
THE ISLANDIAN TIMES Monday, September 17, 2057 DC REDBIRDS TIE RH REDS IN TU WEST On a chilly and rainy afternoon in North Hills, the Denton City Redbirds (94-60) did what they had to do... they beat the Hawks 7-0 and tied the Rolling Hills Reds (94-60) for the top spot in the Tycobbian West Division, thus forcing a sudden-game this afternoon in Rolling Hills... the winner will win the division title and a spot in the Pro Cup postseason playoffs. Because of several long rain delays Denton City used two pitchers... Flash Stringfellow (24-12/2.82) started and shut out the Hawks for four and one-third innings and left with a 5-0 edge... then Randall Neighbors (2-4/6.45) relieved him and completed the shutout, stopping North Hills (81-73) on just one hit the rest of the way... 20-game winner Johnny Kristoff (20-15/3.56) went down to defeat, shelled for five runs in four-plus innings... doing most of the damage was 1B Val Anniston (.270/27 HR/83 RBI), who clubbed a grand slammer in the second frame for Denton City, his 27th of the year... the Redbirds added two more scores in the seventh on a two-run homer by LF Harper Catlow (.226/4 HR/14 RBI). |

THE ISLANDIAN TIMES
Monday, September 17, 2057 4 TEAMS TANGLE IN SUDDEN DEATH There is no tomorrow for at least two teams in the sudden death playoffs to decide the division winners in the Tycobbian East and West Divisions... two teams will advance to the Pro Cup playoffs and two teams will head home for a winter of gloom and what might have been... the Midway Wolves are at home hosting the Red Bluff Red Sox at Joe Wolf Stadium Monday afternoon for the Tycobbian East title... in the other clash the Denton City Redbirds are on the road in Rolling Hills at the Midtown Base Ball Grounds playing for the Tycobbian West crown. Midway and Red Bluff split six games in the regular season... likewise Rolling Hills and Denton City... in The Islandian Times preseason poll, Midway was the favorite to capture its fifth consecutive TU East pennant... the Red Sox were ranked number five in the poll... Denton City was the choice in the TU West to win their third flag in five years, while the Reds were also the fifth pick in the poll... the clubs split their season series... Midway and Rolling Hills got the homefield advantage because of run differentials in the season series. Fred Taylor (15-13/4.01) will get the starting call for Red Bluff and Rob Land (15-10/4.18) will be on the hill for Midway... starters for Denton City and Rolling Hills will have two 20-game winners on the mound... it will be Jayson Mannon (21-9/3.34) for the Redbirds and Tommy Otis (21-14/3.08) for the Reds... none of the clubs have been playing well of late... Midway and Red Bluff were 5-10 in September, while Denton City went 8-7 and Rolling Hills 7-8. Last edited by Eugene Church; 05-25-2018 at 10:36 PM. |

THE ISLANDIAN TIMES
Wednesday, September 19, 2057 HALLELUJAH! IT'S GLORY TIME IN THE IPA! "The leaves of brown came tumbling down... remember September"... that's right, it's that glorious time of the year all across Islandia... especially for the eight cities that have been blessed with a spot in the Islandian Pro Alliance Pro Cup playoffs: Valmara, St. John, Elnora, Fort Benton, Oxford, Turon, Red Bluff and Denton City... the IPA postseason is a survival of the fittest... three grueling weeks where eight clubs get pared down to one talented... and sometimes one lucky survivior - the IPA Pro Cup champion... each year one and only one city gets to celebrate the ultimate -- the winning of the much-revered and much-coveted Pro Cup trophy, emblematic of professional baseball supremacy throughout the Islands... there is nothing like that euphoric feeling... and it only comes around once a year... that wonderful time is here! The battle royal begins this Friday afternoon with the St. John Crusaders traveling to Valmara for the opening game of the best-of-seven series... in the other Ruthlandian Union matchup the Elnora All-Stars are heading to Fort Benton to play the Defenders... the Tycobbian Union slate shows the Turon Typhoons welcoming the Oxford Red Caps and Denton City at home against the Red Bluff Red Sox... last year Pro Cup champion, the Middlefield Roosters, will not be back to defend their title... they wound up third in the RU West race, won by Fort Benton... this will be Elnora's first taste of postseason play since 2035... Fort Benton hasn't made an appearance since 2037. Valmara and Turon will be in quest of a record-setting fifth IPA crown... all of the other six postseason participants have a meager total of three Pro Cup trophies between them... winning the IPA championship has proven to be a difficult task... in the league's 56 years of history 34 of the 64 teams have never won one. What were the season’s Head-to-Head results for the matchups?
Also, gonna call my shot right here: The TU will be represented by either Turon, or a team whose mascot starts with “Red”. |

SupperHappyTime, you are quite a prognosticator... think you nailed it in the Tycobbian Union! Ruthlandian Union: St. John went 11-7 against the other playoff teams... 3-3 with Valmara… 3-3 with Elnora... and 5-1 against Fort Benton. Valmara was 9-6 overall... 3-3 with St. John... 2-1 over Elnora... and 4-2 against Fort Benton. Elnora was even at 6-6... 1-2 with Valmara… 3-3 with St. John and 2-1 against Fort Benton. Fort Benton was only 4-11 against the other playoff teams... 1-5 with St. John... 2-4 against Valmara… and 1-2 opposite Elnora. Tycobbian Union: Red Bluff was 10-5 overall... 4-2 against Oxford... 2-1 over Turon… and 4-2 against Denton City. Oxford total was 9-6... 5-1 with Turon… 2-4 with Red Bluff... and 2-1 against Denton City. Denton City went 6-9 overall... 1-2 against Oxford... 3-3 against Turon… and 2-4 with Red Bluff. I'm going to recap all of the divisions and then preview the Pro Cup participants… play the playoffs... and then give the award winners.
I need to get immersed as much as I can in the 2057 season and look at each club on an individual basis... I need to learn the new players. Last edited by Eugene Church; 05-30-2018 at 08:24 PM. |
