NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
RAVENS HOLD OFF BROWNS TO IMPROVE TO 8-1
The Baltimore Ravens built a 17-0 first half lead and then held on to defeat Cleveland 24-21 in week 10 NFL action. The victory improves the Ravens record to 8-1, best in the AFC. Running back Fabien Montgomery led the Ravens offense with a pair of touchdowns. The Browns lose and fall to 4-5 on the season despite a tremendous game from All-Pro receiver Zach Kruczek. He had 9 catches for 112 yards including a pair of touchdown grabs in the fourth quarter as the Browns were scrambling to get back in the game. Cincinnati remains two games back of the Ravens in the AFC North after beating Pittsburgh 26-16.

Tennessee's lead in the AFC South remains at two games after both the Titans and second place Houston won. With rookie phenom Charles *Trippi sidelined, former Tennessee starter Manfred Gayle made a spirited effort to win his job back. The veteran Titans QB threw for 4 touchdowns and 322 yards as Tennessee humbled Indianapolis 39-15. In Houston, the Texans downed Jacksonville 17-3.

Rookie Bob *Fenimore ran for 2 touchdowns and 74 yards to help San Diego past Kansas City 30-15. The other two AFC West clubs, Oakland and Denver, meet tonight in the Mile High City.

PACKERS AND EAGLES CONTINUE TO ROLL IN NFC
The Green Bay Packers beat the defending champion Chicago Bears for the second time this season. Tony *Canadeo ran for 128 yards and Donnie Drumm kicked two field goals in the final five minutes of the game as the Packers beat Chicago 26-22 in Green Bay. The Packers have won 6 straight games and done so with 3 different quarterbacks. Third stringer Robert Anderson got the start with both Frank *Albert and Jordan Montana nursing injuries. Anderson was outstanding completing 20-of-28 passes for 250 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Sid *Luckman passed for 375 yards in a losing cause.

The Philadelphia Eagles remain tied with Green Bay for the top record in the NFC. Both clubs are 8-1 after the Eagles beat Dallas 37-20. RB Harley Mitchell led the way for Philadelphia with 147 yards rushing and 2 touchdown carries. Mitchell added a 3rd touchdown on an 11 yard pass reception form QB Ken Neal.

In other NFC games Todd Berger ran for 93 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns as New Orleans beat Carolina 27-13.

San Francisco has sole possession of top spot in the west after winning a defensive struggle with St Louis by a 10-6 score. Seattle is tied with the Rams 1 game back of the 6-3 49ers after beating Arizona 19-13. Anthony Rice kicked 4 field goals for the winners.

Jim Elliott threw for 3 touchdowns and 332 yards as Minnesota blanked slumping Detroit 24-0. The Lions have lost 3 straight games, all to NFC North Division opponents.

Otto *Graham passed for 407 yards and 4 touchdowns as Tampa Bay beat Atlanta 42-33 while Bob *Seymour ran for a pair of scores as Washington beat the New York Giants 31-15.

The Crusaders feature an outstanding backcourt led by sophomore's Bob *Cousy and Frank *Oftring. The will open their season on Thursday against Wyoming at New York in the preseason NIT.

Boston College, Oregon, Oklahoma A&M and New York University round out the top 5 in the coaches poll. The same schools comprised the top 5 in the AP poll but in a slightly different order. 4th ranked Oklahoma A&M is also in the preseason NIT and could face Holy Cross in the title game. Oregon is in the Alaska Challenge and will play on Thursday as will NYU which is entered in the Hawaii Classic. 2nd ranked Boston College will not open it's season until November 12 against Manhattan.

CANADIAN FOOTBALL
The ORFU season came to a close with the Toronto Balmy Beach club winning the regular season. Balmy Beach beat Ottawa 17-6 in the season finale and the two clubs will meet in one playoff semi-final next weekend. The other semi-final will match Windsor and Hamilton after the Royals beat the Wildcats 20-14. The two clubs finished tied for second but Hamilton gets homefield for the semi-final based on a better point differential in their 2 game head to head series. Each squad won on it's home field.

There was one game out west yesterday as Calgary beat Edmonton 19-17. There are still a couple of games remaining in the Western League but the playoffs are set with Edmonton and Winnipeg meeting in a 2 game total point series starting November 12th.

In the Interprovincial League there is still one weekend of action remaining before the playoffs. First place Montreal is guaranteed one berth in the two-game total point final but second place will not be decided until after next weekend's games which have Hamilton at Ottawa while Montreal hosts Toronto.

Has Tampa Bay's season opening starting QB still out with that injury, or has Otto just taken over the top spot on the depth chart? Seems to be having a good rookie year, and his team's at .500. Not bad. Slightly within striking distance.

Paul Christman is still injured but has been upgraded to probable for next week's game. It will leave the Bucs with a tough choice as Graham has been the more effective qb but the Bucs are 2-3 in games Graham started and 3-2 in games started by Christman.

Right now Graham is listed as first on the depth chart and Christman has been moved from #3 where he was last week to backup but the Bucs have a bye this week so that could change for the following game.

Code:

# NAME GS AT CMP YDS CMP % YDS/A TD INT LONG RATING
#11 Otto *Graham 5 173 114 1370 65.9 7.9 9 5 60 95.3
#5 Paul *Christman 5 165 97 1419 58.8 8.6 11 12 59 78.8

Personally I hope they stick with Graham as he has shown some nice improvement each game. He just needs to cut down on the interceptions but he is far better than Christman in that area already. (Just too bad he cant play the Falcons every week)

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
ROOKIES LEAD RAIDERS PAST BRONCOS 22-13
Rookie QB Tom Maddox and receiver Camp *Wilson combined for a pair of touchdowns to lead the visiting Oakland Raiders past Denver 22-13 in Monday Night Football action. The victory improves the Raiders record to 5-4 and with 5 of their final 7 games at home puts them in a good spot as the playoff battle heats up. Denver, on the other hand, is now 3-6 and the Broncos have lost 5 of their last 6 games.

Maddox, a second round pick out of the Naval Acadamy, beat out veteran Antwan Baker for the Raiders starting quarterback job in training camp and has never looked back. Maddox has had a couple of rough outings but for the most part has been very dependable and seems to be improving each week. Part of Maddox early success can be attributed to the Raiders strong running game led by 4 time all-pro Johnny Cushing and some of the credit must go to receiver Camp *Wilson. The first round pick out of Tulsa has become Maddox's go-to guy and his improvement over the past 9 weeks has paralelled that of Maddox.

Overall this is an exceptional year for rookie quarterbacks as 9 of them have started at least one game this season. Former Georgia star Charles *Trippi has been outstanding with Tennessee prior to suffering an ankle injury in week 8. He should be back in another week or two. Giants QB Harry *Gilmer, from Alabama, and Green Bay signal caller Frank *Albert, ex of Stanford, also are sidelined with injuries after a solid start.

On the flip side injuries to starting quarterbacks have allowed Tampa's Otto *Graham, San Diego's Les *Horvath and Buffalo's DeMarco Dickinson an opportunity to shine. Here is a look at what the rookie QB's have accomplished so far this season.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
TEXAS TOPPLES FURTHER WITH SECOND STRAIGHT LOSS
After losing two straight conference games the University of Texas has fallen from #3 a couple of weeks ago to 16th in the latest college football poll. The Longhorns are not the only team to take a big drop of late, USC has also fallen on hard times and has gone from preseason favourite to reprsent the PCC in the Rose Bowl to being in danger of dropping out of the top 20 entirely.

Looking ahead the big next week will feature 10th ranked Army travelling to South Bend to meet the number one ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Not quite as exiting as last season when the two squads were ranked 1-2 heading into their showdown in New York but the Black Knights will be fired up and looking to avenge last seasons loss.

SUNBELT CONFERENCE PREDICTED ORDER OF FINISH

1- NEW ORLEANS: Went 12-2 in conference and 28-5 overall but lost bid for their 7th conference tournament title with a loss to East Carolina in the championship game. The Privateers have plenty of talent returing including 6'11" center Will Cloney and 6'10" forward Brent Visconti.

2- CHARLOTTE: The 49ers are coming off a trip to the NIT title game where they lost by two points to Missouri. Three starters return including preseason all-conference selections Tom Thompson and Johnny *Bach.

3- WESTERN CAROLINA: The Catamounts were 15-16 last season and have never made an NCAA field. Last trip to the NIT was 7 years ago but if things go right they might have a shot this season.

4- EAST CAROLINA: Last winning season was in 1939 but surprised everyone by winning conference tournament a year ago. That could change this year for the Pirates as they have 4 returning starters plus a developing talent in sophomore forward Bonon Smith.

5- LOUISIANA TECH: 21-69 over the last 3 years including just 5-25 a year ago. This will be another long season for the Bulldogs.

6- SOUTHERN MISS: The Golden Eagles have not finished above .500 since 1936-37. Just two starters return this year and there is very little experience on the bench.

7- ALABAMA STATE: Earned an NIT invite after a 19-13 campaign last season including 11-3 in conference. This season will not be as kind to the Hornets who have 5 freshmen and 4 sophomores on the roster. The good news is freshman forward Joseph Malbon will likely be the best newcomer in the conference.

8- UAB: After winning 24 games two years ago and earning an at-large NCAA tournament bid the Blazers dropped to 8-22 last season.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION
DOMINGUEZ SCORES 30 TO LEAD BRAVES
NBA scoring leader Miguel Dominguez poured in 30 points and added 8 rebounds to lead the Buffalo Braves past the Providence Steamrollers 106-96. The Steamrollers had entered the game with the best record in the league while Buffalo was just a game over .500.

Dallas has the best record in the west after an 83-59 victory over the visiting New York Knickerbockers. Joseph Cunningham led the Chaps offense with 21 points while guard John Vasta was the only Knick in double figures, he had 12 points. New York shot just 29% from the field and were a miserable 6-for-37 from 3-point territory.

In Kansas City the Kings blasted Chicago 104-67 as the Stags connected on just 27% of their field goal attempts. Ray *Sundquist had 28 points and 9 rebounds in a losing effort for the Stags. He was far and away the best player on the court but had little help - Chicago's other 4 starters combined for just 23 points.

Bam Sanders had 20 points and league all-time scoring leader Ethan Miller added 18 as New Orleans dropped the Colonels in Kentucky 108-88. After starting the season 4-1, the Colonels have dropped 7 of their last 11 games.

SOUTHWEST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE PREVIEW
The SWAC is a balanced conference where 5 or 6 teams generally have a decent shot at winning the title in any given season. Unfortunately they are near the bottom nationally and rarely give the bigger schools much competition. They rely on a large number of junior college transfers to fill out their rosters.

SWAC PREDICTED ORDER OF FINISH

1- SOUTHERN: Finished 22-10 last year and made their third trip to the NIT in school history, winning thier first tournament game in the process. Led by senior center Andrew Gottlieb and forward Matthew Colbin, the Jaguars have the most skilled big men in the conference.

2- ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF: After winning the conference title two years ago they fell to 10-20 last season. The Golden Lions return three starters this season including preseason all-SWAC selection Tim Mathieu

3- TEXAS SOUTHERN: Have not been invited to a postseason tournament since 1935 and are coming off two straight single digit victory seasons including 9-21 a year ago. In preseason all-conference selection Cameron Sanders and guard Dustin Williams the Tigers have two of the best shooters in the conference.

4- JACKSON STATE: The Tigers finished 18-15 on the season but got hot in the conference tournament and won it for the second time in school history. They have two solid guards in Lourdes Rodgers and Brian Burcham but lack talent up front.

5- MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE: The Delta Devils have not had a .500 season since their last conference championship year of 1940. Did make it to the conference tournament title game last year after a 5-9 regular season SWAC record. Should be improved this year as they have plenty of experience on their roster.

6- PRAIRIE VIEW: The only school in conference history to reach the Sweet 16 when they did so in 1938. Since then the Panthers have finished over .500 only once, in 1945 when they won their second SWAC title. Were 10-20 a year ago.

7- ALCORN STATE: The only school in conference history to earn an at large bid to the NCAA's, they did so in 1944 when they won a school record 25 games. Since then the Braves have dropped to the middle of the conference including last year when they were 14-17 overall.

8- GRAMBLING: The Tigers have never won more than 18 games in a season and their only conference title came in the league's inagural year of 1933 when after a 9-20 regular season they won three straight games to take the conference tournament title. Were 13-18 last year.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
There is just one game on the NHL slate tonight as the Chicago Blackhawks travel to Boston to face the Bruins. Boston leads the league with a 5-1-1 record while the Hawks sit in the cellar at 1-4-1. The key for the Bruins quick start has been the stellar goaltending of Frank Brimsek, who leads the league with a 1.71 goals against average. Offensively centers Milt Schmidt and Don Gallinger along with defenseman Clare Martin are among the league scoring leaders.

The Blackhawks have struggled offensively with a league low 12 goals in 6 games. Gaye Stewart leads the team with 4 goals while Bud Poile has 3. Both players joined Chicago as part of the blockbuster trade that sent Max Bentley to Toronto.

NATS ROLL OVER PROVIDENCE
The Syracuse Nationals continued their hot play of late by dumping the Steamrollers in Providence 98-91. Syracuse has won 5 of it's last 6 games while slumping Providence has lost three of four. Forward Robert Stennis led the Nationals with 27 points and 10 rebounds.

Buffalo won for the second time in as many nights as the Braves thumped visiting Milwaukee 93-56. The Hawks shot just 26% from the field and only rookie Mel *McGaha managed to score in double figures.

PRESEASON TOURNEYS BEGIN TODAY
Another college basketball season tips off today with the 3 preseason tournaments. Much of the attention will be focused on New York City and the Preseason NIT with the hopes of a title game between the nations top ranked team in Holy Cross and third ranked Oklahoma A&M. NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
HAWKS WIN SECOND STRAIGHT
Three goals in the final 3:15 of the game gave the Chicago Blackhawks a 4-2 victory over the visiting Boston Bruins. The win was the second in a row for Chicago and moves them ahead of New York and into fifth place in the National Hockey League standings.

After Pete Babando and Ray Conacher traded goals in the first period it looked like the Bruins put the game away when Woody Dumart tallied a powerplay marker early in the third period. Bruins goaltender Frank Brimsek leads the league in goals against average and had turned aside 22 of 23 Chicago shots up to that point. However, the Blackhawks evened the game on a fluke goal when Alex Kaleta's shot deflected off Bruin defenseman Clare Martin and passed a stunned Brimsek with just over 3 minutes remaining. Two minutes later crafty Chicago pivot George Gee spotted Bill Moisenko behind the Boston defense and sent him in alone on Brimsek. Mosienko made no mistake and the Hawks had a 3-2 lead as Gee and Metro Prystai assisted on both third period goals. Chicago ended the scoring with Red Hamill's empty-net marker in the closing seconds.

There are two games on the schedule tonight as Toronto visits Montreal while Detroit entertains the last place New York Rangers.

BOXING
MARSHALL WINS IN RETURN TO RING
In his first bout since a surprise loss to Archie Moore for the World Lightheavyweigh Title, Lloyd Marshall came up with a strong effort. The Cleveland native went into top challenger Billy Conn's hometown of Pittsburgh and emerged with a split decision victory although most impartial observers felt Marshall should have won unanimously. Two of the judges agreed scoring it 117-111 and 116-112 respectively for Marshall but the third, perhaps overly influenced by the large pro-Conn crowd gave the fight to the Pittsburgh native by a 115-113 margin.

After the bout Marshall said he was looking forward to a rematch with Moore early next year. Marshall, who claimed the world title after winning the postwar tournament of 1946, is 24-5-1 for his career. The 30 year old Conn suffers just his second career loss and the first one came by disqualification. He is 29-2-2 for his career.

SUGAR RAY ROBINSON TO DEFEND TITLE TONIGHT
World Welterweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson is poised to defend his title at Madison Square Garden this evening against Felix Wouters. The 26 year old Sugar Ray has a postwar record of 14-1-1 and will be making his 5th title defense since ko'ing Marty Servo in the finals of the postwar tournament just over a year ago.

Wouters, a 32 year old from Belgium, is the reigning European Welterweight Champion and has a postwar record of 17-12-3. He claimed the European title with a TKO victory over fellow countryman Bep Van Klaveren in August.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
*COUSY LEADS HOLY CROSS TO WIN AT PRESEASON NIT
If there is a better guard in college basketball than Holy Cross leader Bob *Cousy you wouldn't know it after watching the sensational sophomore in action in the Preseason NIT opener. *Cousy had complete control of the Holy Cross offense, registering 22 points and 14 assists as the number one ranked Crusaders toyed with Wyoming in a 97-80 victory. Phil *Farbman added 21 points while Cousy's backcourt mate Frank *Oftring chipped in with 16. Wyoming got a strong effort from senior forward Tim Frei, who had 20 points, but it was clear the Cowboys lacked the horses to keep with Holy Cross. One note of concern for Holy Cross is that junior forward Wallace *Jones left the game in the first quarter with a wrist injury. He will be examined today but is likely out for the rest of the tournament.

In other NIT games 7'1" freshman center Bob *Kurland had 18 points as Oklahoma A&M dumped New Orleans 74-50. Senior forward Guy Mouyerne singlehandedly led Auburn past 7th ranked Indiana 83-51. Mouyerne had 28 points and 22 rebounds to pace the Tigers. Senior center Jack *Nichols had 28 points and 17 rebounds as California beat a game Miami of Ohio squad 79-72.

Today's semi-finals pit Holy Cross against California while Oklahoma A&M meets Auburn.

HAWAII CLASSIC
As impressive as Holy Cross was in winning their NIT opener it was nothing compared to what their Eastern Independant Conference rivals from New York University did in Honolulu. NYU destroyed Houston 110-43 in the Hawaii Classic opener. Junior gaurd Slater *Martin led NYU with 33 points while forward Matthew Blake added 22. The best news for NYU was that junior center Dolph *Schayes played 28 pain-free minutes and had 17 points. It was *Schayes broken wrist in the conference tournament last year that cost his club a chance at a deep run in the NCAA tournament.

In other games from Hawaii, 12th ranked Washington got 27 points from junior forward Marshall *Hawkins in an 85-75 win over Richmond. Guards Michael Bullock and Larry Rodriguez each had 19 points as VMI upset 17th ranked USC 69-64. In the other game Penn State built a 25 point lead at the half and coasted past Kansas 75-51.

Today upset minded VMI will have it's work cut out when the Keydets face New York University in one semi-final while Washington meets Penn State in the other.

ALASKA CHALLENGE
MEMPHIS SHOCKS OREGON
The University of Memphis pulled off a big upset with a 71-68 victory over preseason number two Oregon in the opening game of the Alaska Challenge. The difference was Memphis' work on the boards as they nearly doubled Oregon's rebound total. Munashe Garcia led the Tigers with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Oregon got 49 points out of their backcourt of Dick *Triptow and Andy *Tonkovich but next to nothing from their big men.

4th ranked Boston College also fell in the opening round, losing 81-64 to Alabama. The Crimson Tide, who are ranked 14th in the preseason polls, got a 30 point effort from sophomore forward Hank *Dezonie. It was quite a performance from *Dezonie who averaged less than a point per game as a freshman.

The other two games went as expected as Purdue walloped Indiana State 92-45 thanks to a 27 point effort from backup guard Carlos Feliciano. Feliciano was pressed into action when starter Patrick Colon suffered a back injury in the opening minute. Colon is expected to miss up to a month. In the final game Florida beat Notre Dame 79-59 despite a 30 point, 11 rebound effort from sophomore Irish center Ryan Gardner. Gardner was the National Freshman of the Year last season.

Today's matchups have Memphis meeting Florida while Alabama faces Purdue.

CHAPS ARE HOTTEST TEAM IN WEST
Defending league champion Dallas has quietly become the Western Conference's hottest team. The Chaps started the season with just 5 wins in their opening 11 games but after adjusting to all the new faces in the roster have since reeled off 4 straight victories. The latest was a 100-94 win at home over St Louis. The win did come at a cost however, as Chaps center Stu Granger reaggravated the ankle injury that caused him to miss 4 games early in the season. This time it was diagnosed as a sprain and he will likely be sidelined 2-3 weeks. Granger has played just 6 games this season and was averaging 11.5 ppg and 8.7 rpg.

Elsewhere, Cincinnati beat slumping Kentucky 82-76 behind a career high 27 points from 10th year PF Madek Backfisch. The Colonels have lost four of their last five games.

In the only other game Baltimore shot over 60% in hammering Pittsburgh 113-55. Every player on the Baltimore roster got in on the scoring leading by forward Joe Mozell who had 17 points but set out most of the second half. The Bullets led 63-25 at the half.

ROYALS SIGN VETERANS
With a couple of backups nursing injuries the Cincinnati Royals signed a pair of veteran free agents to add depth to their roster. Center Tyson Oltremari, a 9th year pro from Tennessee, and power forward Sherman Henderson, in his 7th season out of Boston College, were both signed to one year deals.

Oltremari appeared in 57 games for the Pistons last year starting 8 times. He averaged 6.1 ppg and 5.0 rpg. Originally a second round pick by Cleveland he has played for the Cavs, Philadelphia, Boston and Buffalo in addition to Fort Wayne. He is averaging 4.9 ppg in 498 career games. He turned pro after leading the SEC in scoring as a junior and being named the conference player of the year.

Henderson was selected 6th overall in the 1938 draft by Philadelphia. A two time Big East player of the year and an All-America selection as a junior, Henderson never lived up to the lofty expectations the Warriors had for him. After three years in a backup role in Philly he signed as a free agent with Buffalo in 1942. From there he spent most of the next 4 seasons in the development league but had brief call-ups to Providence, Indianapolis and Baltimore. He spent all of last season in the development league. He is averaging 4.5 ppg in 330 career games.

BOXING
ROBINSON BEATS EURO CHAMP WITH 11TH ROUND TKO
World welterweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson had little trouble disposing of the European champ before a packed Madison Square Garden audience. Robinson appeared to win every round, most quite handily, before the referee stopped the fight after Belgium's Felix Wouters was knocked to the canvas twice in the 11th round. The win improves Sugar Ray's record to 15-1-1 while Wouters drops to 17-13-3.

DURNAN CAN'T SAVE HABS
Despite another outstanding effort from goaltender Bill Durnan the Montreal Canadiens lost for the third straight time. Durnan turned aside 36 Toronto shots but the Habs could mount little offense with Rocket Richard still sidelined and they fell 2-1 to Toronto. Elmer Lach, who leads the league with 11 points, put Montreal on top early with an unassisted goal before the Leafs tied things up in the second period on a shorthanded marker from Joe Klukay. Toronto outshot Montreal 19-5 in the second stanza but Durnan was brilliant. The Leafs put another one past the Montreal netminder early in the third period and that sealed the game as the Canadiens sputtering offence managed just 8 shots on goal through the final two periods.

In the other game last night New York and Detroit battled to a 1-1 tie at The Olympia. Defenseman Frank Eddolls put New York ahead with a power play marker midway through the second period before rookie Red Kelly scored his second career NHL goal early in the third to tie the game up.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
WEEK ELEVEN POINTSPREADS AND PICKS
Another strong showing last week as our pointspread expert was 10-4 to improve to 33-21-2 on the season. Here is what to expect this week.

In the AFC North take the Ravens and Bengals. Baltimore is a 2 point favourite and should beat Pittsburgh by a touchdown while the Browns-Bengals game will be tight and I like the Bengals as four point dogs. The Jets are giving away 8 points at home to Buffalo but New York is an easy choice as the Bills are bad when healthy and terrible with all the injuries they have. The Pats have not had a good year but should be able to beat hapless Miami by more than 5. I like the home favourites in the AFC South. Jacksonville should be a lock but the Titans giving away 8 points scares me a little. Out west the Chiefs should keep it close with Oakland and will cover the spread even if they won't win the game. I'll take the Broncos on the road at San Diego any day I am getting 8 points.

In the NFC the Bears and Packers are both 8 point favourites. I'll take them both but I am a lot more confident with Green Bay than Chicago. The Pack are in Detroit but young Lions quarterback Bob *Waterfield is likely sidelined again. You never know what you get when Minnesota plays so it will either be a blowout Chicago win or a Vikings upset. I'll take the Niners over Seattle as San Francisco looks to avenge week 7 loss. In the Monday night game the Rams should have little trouble with Arizona. Philadelphia crushed the Giants 41-13 a few weeks ago and should do the same this time around. The Redskins barely won over the Cowboys in Big D but should have a little more success at home.

CANADIAN FOOTBALL
The Western Canada Rugby Football league regular season comes to a close today with one game. Calgary hosts provincial rival Edmonton in a game that will have no impact on that league's playoff picture. The postseason will be a two-game total point series beginning next Wednesday in Winnipeg as the Blue Bombers entertain Edmonton. The series concludes a week from Saturday in Edmonton.

The Interprovincial League concludes its season tomorrow with both games having a huge impact on the playoffs. First place Montreal is definately in the 2 game total points final after the Alouettes won 10 of their 11 games but second place is up for grabs. Toronto has a two point lead on Hamilton but the Argos have to play the Alouettes in Montreal while the Tigers are at last place Ottawa. A Hamilton win coupled with a Toronto loss will require the two clubs to play a 1-game showdown to see who squares off against Montreal in the league final.

The Ontario Rugby Football League playoffs begin tomorrow with the semi-finals as first place Toronto Balmy Beach is home to the Ottawa Trojans while the Hamilton Wildcats entertain Windsor. The winners of the 1 game semi-final will meet next weekend.

TONIGHT'S GAME
Edmonton at Calgary

SATURDAY'S GAMES
Hamilton Tigers at Ottawa Rough Riders
Toronto Argos at Montreal Alouettes

CAVS FIRST TO 10 VICTORIES
Juan Harrison had 23 points and Braden Morrow 18 as the Cleveland Cavaliers edged the Warriors 96-94 in Philadelphia to improve upon the league's best record. While the Cavs are first overall with a 10-3 records the strugglinig Warriors are completely at the other end of the spectrum, with a league worst .267 winning percentage.

Things tightened up in the Atlantic Division as the top two teams both lost. First place Providence fell 86-73 in Milwaukee while second place Baltimore was hammered 113-75 in Boston. Forward Mash Prior led the Celtics with 25 points. Third place New York inched closer to the division leaders as the Knickerbockers beat Minneapolis 95-89 at Madison Square Garden.

In other action Cincinnati snapped a 4-game Dallas winning streak by beating the Chaps 80-76 in Texas. Cesar Whitsett had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Royals while Chaps scoring leader Joe Cunningham had 20 for his club. St Louis handed slumping Kentucky it's 5th loss in the past 6 games. COLLEGE BASKETBALL
*SCHAYES TOO MUCH FOR GAME VMI SQUAD
They gave New York University a scare but in the end a second straight upset was not in the cards for VMI. The Keydets, who knocked off 17th ranked USC in the opening round of the Hawaii Classic, led NYU by one at the half before Dolph *Schayes took over for NYU. *Schayes had 18 points and 21 rebounds as NYU prevailed 79-63. VMI was very selective in it's shooting in the first half and connected on over 60% of it's attempts. However, as New York picked up the pressure in the second half the Keydets were forced to take lower percentage shots and they had no one who could match up with the athleticsm of *Schayes on the boards.

Next up for New York will be Washington which advanced to the Hawaii Classic title game with a 77-59 victory over Penn State. Marshall *Hawkins had 22 points and center Dan Elwood 21 for the Huskies.

ALASKA CHALLENGE
Purdue and Florida will meet in the Alaska Challenge championship game. The Boilermakers beat Alabama 67-65 on a last second basket from senior forward Michael Arrowood. It was a mild upset as Alabama was ranked 14th in the preseason polls while Purdue was 22nd. The clock struck midnight for upset minded Memphis in the second game. After shocking 2nd ranked Oregon yesterday the Tigers were wallopped 70-46 by 6th ranked Florida. Junior center Ward *Gibson had 20 points to lead the Gators.

The Boilermakers suffered their second serious injury in as many days as guard Max Hodges suffered an eye injury and could be out a couple of months. The 6'3" junior has been a starter since early in his freshman season and averaged over 13 points per game last year. Yesterday reserve guard Patrick Colon injured his back and could miss up to a month.

PRESEASON NIT
California gave them a battle but in the end preseason number one Holy Cross was just a little too much for Bears as the Crusaders prevailed 72-65 in the preseason NIT semi-finals. Senior forward Phil *Farbman had 29 points and sophomore guard Bob *Cousy had 8 assists in the win. The news was not all good for Holy Cross as they found out earlier in the day that junior forward Wallace *Jones will miss at least a month after suffering a broken wrist in yesterday's quarterfinal win over Wyoming. Jones averaged 11.0 ppg and 7.1 rpg as a sophomore.

We will not be seeing the much anticipated showdown between Holy Cross and Oklahoma A&M because the third ranked Aggies were upset 59-51 by Auburn. Senior forward Ian McGee had 20 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Tigers to victory. It was a sloppy game as the two clubs combined for 29 turnovers and shot just 29%.

BOXING
ANOTHER DRAW IN EUROPEAN LHW TITLE BOUT
For the second straight time Randy Turpin and Gustave Roth were unable to determine a winner when they met to decide the European Lightheavyweight championship. This time an accidental head butt that opened a gash right above the challenger Roth's right eye forced the referee to stop the fight in the 10th round. They went to the scorecards and all 3 judges at ringside had the fight dead even so it was declated a technical draw. Last month the two battled to a 15 round majority draw. Turpin retains his title and it is unknown at this time if the two fighters will square off for a third time.

On the same card in London, England European middleweight champ Marcel Cerdan retained his title with a 3rd round knock out of British champion Randy Turpin. It was the second time Cerdan has knocked out Turpin in a title fight. With the win Cerdan is 27-5 while Turpin falls to 23-5-2.

I'd like some feedback on this if possible.

Now that we have a lot of sports in full swing how is the level of detail? Personally I am comfortable with it as it is but I want to make sure that you as the reader dont feel either underinformed or overloaded with the amount of stats and player names I am throwing out.

My thinking is each of you may have a particular sport that you follow more closely than some of the others, or maybe you focus on your hometown pro and college teams in all sports. Am I giving you the right amount of detail on those leagues or teams?

Would you like to see more of a write up on each pro game and the major colleges or is the detail good now? Also, do you like seeing the old photos or do they just waste space?

Finally there is nothing I like better than having a question or two on a particular team or athlete so feel free to fire away anytime. It really lets me learn more about my league because there is obviously so much going on I just dont pick up on all of it.

Anyway, if there is anything you want to see more or less of just let me know. Hopefully some of you are still finding this as interesting and entertaining as I am.

You also do a great job of responding to request for more specific information. Either by a write up or more focus on upcoming games. Great, great job.

Yes, maybe weekly Boxing Ratings?

I think all other sports are well covered so that daily we know what is what, but boxing is hard to stay with if we miss the key post about a key bout

TF,

You do a fantastic job. All I had to say was "Patriots" and I got a full rundown. Amazing. I think you do enough work on this as it is. Just keep up the great work.

Great job as always, Tiger Fan. I think what you are doing is fine, although I like the idea of knowing the current boxing rankings a little more routinely.

Question for you. Earlier in the year, my Cavs lost in the first round of the playoffs. What did they do in the offseason to help them get over the hump and do you see them making the postseason and making noise this season?

Thanks for all the feedback, much appreciated. I just wanted to be sure the level of detail was sufficient for you to follow along.

Boxing ratings will be simple to add. I will pick a slower day and post them something like every time I do a Friday report.

Bobbuttons -Got a busy work day tomorrow so likely late Wed night or Thurs I will have some Cavs info for you. My first thought on the Cavs success is they have been winning the close games this year while in taking a quick look at last season sked they seemed to lose a majority of the games decided by 5 or fewer points.

Also, just a clarification on last season. When I was doing the playoffs it was with a quickplay game but just after the first round TPB05 came out so I immediately added it to my stable of games and resimmed the season and postseason. (plus 15 years of history with my TDCB players to import into it) In reality with this game the current roster of Cavs finished tied for 3rd in the Northeast Division with a 33-41 record and missed the playoffs.

OKLAHOMA MOVES INTO TIE FOR LEAD
The Oklahoma Sooners spanked Kansas State 48-7 to move into a first place tie with Missouri atop the Big Six standings. Missouri lost a non-conference game to Duke yesterday. Kansas also remained in the mix with a 24-7 win over Nebraska. The season should go right down to the wire as Missouri plays both Oklahoma and Kansas to finish the season. Earlier in the season Oklahoma blanked Kansas 20-0. An Oklahoma win in Missouri next Saturday would wrap up the conference for the Sooners.

In the Hawaii Classic NYU got 15 points from Matthew Blake and 14 from Dolph *Schayes as they easily beat Washington 67-51. Forward Marshall *Hawkins, who had a terrific tournament for the Huskies, was the only Washington player in double-digits as he scored 18 points and added 12 rebounds.

In the Preseason NIT Phil *Farbman had 23 points and Bob *Cousy had 8 assists as Holy Cross easily handled Auburn 76-50.

Up north in the Alaska Challenge it was Purdue that came out on top. The Boilermakers got 23 points from senior forward Julio Murillo as they beat Florida 81-68.

Regular season action gets underway Monday with a slew of games including CCNY hosting Oklahoma, UCLA visiting Ohio State and San Francisco entertaining Maryland.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION
UP IS DOWN IN THE NEW LOOK NORTHEAST DIVISION
It is barely a month into the season and things have a habit of sorting themselves out but no division in basketball has had as much of a change between last April and today than the Northeast Divison.

Here is how things looked at the end of last season:
Northeast Division
Code:
 1946-47 Final W L PCT GB
Pittsburgh Pipers 47 27 .635 -
Fort Wayne Pistons 35 39 .473 12
Syracuse Nationals 33 41 .446 14
Cleveland Cavs 33 41 .446 14
Buffalo Braves 31 43 .419 16

Current standings W L PCT	GB
Cleveland 10 3	.769 x
Syracuse 9 5	.643	1.5
Buffalo 7 4	.636	2.0
Fort Wayne 4 7	.364	5.0
Pittsburgh 4 7	.364	5.0
What happened to Pittsburgh is easy to explain. The Pipers lost their best player when Rod Rodriguez signed with Boston. Ryan Fry was signed from Philadelphia and while he is scoring at close to the same rate as Rodriguez he is requiring a lot more shots to do so. SF Byron Swygart also has a terrible field goal percentage and it is no surprise that since the Pipers are last in the league in field goal percentage they are also last in the league in points scored. Compare that to last season when they ranked 6th out of 20 teams in shooting percentage and I think we have found their problem.

At the other end of the spectrum is Cleveland. The Cavs are near the middle of the pack in most categories but they have been doing something they did not do last year - win the close games. This year the Cavs are 6-0 in games decided by 6 or fewer points. Last year they were 8-17 in games decided by 6 or less. There are no real changes to their roster so is it simply a case of luck and things will even out over the long run or have the Cavs discovered some way to buckle down at crunch time?

One big factor in Cleveland's early season success has been the play of forward Braden Morrow. Drafted first overall by the Cavs in 1939 the former Penn State star has never averaged more than 13.3 ppg or 6.5 rpg. Through 13 games this season he is averaging 17.5 ppg and 8.1 rpg. Is he just on a hot streak or has Morrow finally, at age 31, stepped up to the next level and become the player the Cavs had hoped he could be?

PISTONS HYBARGER NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Mo Hybarger was named the NBA's player of the week after scoring 83 points in 3 games. Hybarger collects the award for the 10th time in his 13 year NBA career. The 6'5" shooting guard is averaging 19.6 points thru 11 games so far this season. Originally drafted by Cleveland 3rd overall out of CCNY in 1933, Hybarger is in his 10th season with Fort Wayne. He ranks 5th alltime with 16,751 career points.

LAST NIGHT'S ACTION
The Pittsburgh Pipers got 23 points from Ryan Fry as they beat slumping Philadelphia 83-76 in one of 4 games on the schedule yesterday. Elsewhere Rob Rodriguez had 25 points and 9 assists to pace Boston past Fort Wayne 111-99; Kansas City got 30 points from guard Nurivan Inman as the Kings dumped Minneapolis 89-72 and New Orleans beat Cincinnati 94-77.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
WINGS AND RANGERS POST SHUTOUT VICTORIES
It was not a very happy Saturday for Canadian hockey fans as both the Canadiens and Leafs were shutout in NHL action. In Montreal, Ted Lindsay scored twice and Gordie Howe had a 3 point night as the Detroit Red Wings blanked Montreal 3-0. The Habs managed just 15 shots on Red Wing goaltender Harry Lumley, who notched his first shutout of the season. Since Maurice Richard went down with an injury, the Canadiens are 0-4. The Rocket is expected to miss two more weeks.

In Toronto, Jim Henry stopped all 24 shots the Maple Leafs took on him as the New York Rangers blanked the Leafs 3-0. Grant Warwick, Buddy O'Connor and Rene Trudell scored for the Rangers who are 3-0-1 after losing their first 4 games of the season.

There are two games tonight. The Detroit Red Wings entertain Toronto while the Rangers travel to Chicago to face the Blackhawks.

KIM WINS THIRD STRAIGHT PRO FIGHT
Hawaiian lightweight Phil Kim improved to 3-0 as a professional with a convincing unanimous decision victory in his 10 round bout with Japan's Takeshi Sasazaki. The 21 year old is slowly working his way up the ranks and is close to being considered one of the top 20 lightweights in the world. The 33 year old Sasazaki is now 0-1-1 as a postwar fighter.

Elsewhere, British lightheavyweight Alex Buxton had an easy time outpointing Australian Ritchie Sands in Melbourne. The 23 year old Buxton is 11-14 and had a shot at the European LHW belt last year but he was knocked out by Freddie Mills. Sands is much more comfortable fighting as a middleweight but falls to 0-2.

In Havana, Orlando Zulueta improved to 12-4-1 as a pro by outpointing fellow Cuban Diego Sosa in their 12 round bout. Zulueta is just 20 years old and may be a force to reckon with in the lightweight division down the road. Sosa is 28-14 fighting primarily against featherweights.

CANADIAN FOOTBALL
ARGOS CLINCH PLAYOFF BERTH
The Toronto Argonauts clinched an Interprovincial Rugby Football League playoff berth with a victory over the team that stands in their way from repeating as Grey Cup champions. The Argos knocked off first place Montreal 38-32 thanks to a 13 yard touchdown pass from Knobby Wirkowski to Al Pfeifer with 48 seconds remaining in the game. The win clinched second place for Toronto and sets up a 2 game total point home and home series to determine the league champion.

Last year the Argos beat Montreal in the Eastern Final en route to an overtime win over Winnipeg in the Grey Cup game.

BALMY BEACH ADVANCE WITH OVERTIME WIN
It took an overtime field goal but the first place Toronto Balmy Beach advanced to the Ontario Rugby Football championship game with a 10-7 victory over Ottawa. In the other semi-final the hometown Hamilton Wildcats blanked Windsor 20-0. Hamilton travels to Toronto next Saturday to face the Balmy Beach squad in the game that decides who will represent the ORFU in the eastern final against the Interprovincial League winner. Last year Balmy Beach won the league title by beating the Toronto Indians in the championship game.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
PACKERS AND EAGLES RUNNING AWAY WITH NFC
The Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles each improved to 9-1 on the season with Sunday afternoon victories. In Detroit, the visiting Packers got a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Jordan Montana enroute to a 31-10 victory over the struggling Lions. Detroit surprisingly started Bob *Waterfield at quarterback despite his being listed as questionable for the game. Apparently Waterfield's bum elbow was more of a problem than first thought because he completed just 16 of 40 pass attempts and was picked off twice by Packers defensive backs.

In Philadelphia the Eagles played down to the Giants level but still did just enough to beat New York 16-10. Running back Harley Mitchell gained 121 yards on the ground to account for over half of the Eagles total offense.

The Chicago Bears have gone from league champions to a club that will have to pick it up if they wish to make the playoffs this season. Bears QB Sid *Luckman had a big game throwing 4 touchdown passes but the Chicago defense was awful in a 33-30 loss. The Chicago secondary was victimized deep all game as rookie Minnesota quarterback Paul *Governali completed just 14 passes but they were for well over 300 yards. In addition to throwing two touchdown passes, Governali also ran for one.

Bob *Seymour ran for 119 yards and scored two touchdowns as Washington trimmed Dallas 24-21. Cowboys running back Raymond Cash had 122 yards rushing. For the second game in a row first overall draft pick George *Savitsky failed to register a tackle for Dallas. After getting two sacks in the season opener, the defensive end has just one sack and 7 tackles in the other 9 games.

Seattle pulled into a first place tie with San Francisco in the West Division by beating the 49ers 35-10. Rookie running back Glen *Davis, last year's Heisman Trophy winner, gained 144 yards to lead the Seahawks. It was Davis' second 100 yard rushing game in 5 starts for the Seahawks.

RAVENS SQUEK PAST STEELERS FOR NINTH WIN
Baltimore quarterback John Foster found receiver Andre Harris in the endzone for a 12 yard touchdown pass as time expired to give the Baltimore Ravens a 17-16 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. The win improves the Ravens AFC leading record to 9-1 while the struggling Steelers drop to 3-7.

Bob Edwards caught a 4 yard pass from Bud Rutledge midway through the 4th quarter to lead Cincinnati past Cleveland 13-10. Edwards had 7 catches for 123 yards in the win which improves the Bengals record to 7-3 and keeps them in the thick of the wildcard race. For the Browns, the loss drops them to 4-6 and pretty much kills their playoff hopes.

Miami scored 10 points in the 4th quarter to complete a come from behind 17-14 victory over New England. Both teams are 3-7. The AFC East leading New York Jets used a second half rally to beat Buffalo 27-17. The 2-8 Bills lead 17-6 at the break but it was all Jets in the final 30 minutes.

Houston tightened things up considerably in the South Division by beating the Titans 17-7 in Tennessee. The Titans managed only 187 yards of total offense as the Houston defense led by safety Tom Brady was outstanding.

Despite trailing in most statistical categories the Jacksonville Jaguars managed to beat Indianapolis 34-28. Turnovers were the difference as the Jags returned both a fumble recovery and an interception for touchdowns.

Oakland won big at home, beating Kansas City 30-10 to pull into a first place tie with the Chiefs atop the AFC West. Tommy Maddox threw 3 touchdown passes but it was running back Johnny Cushing who stole the show for the Raiders. Cushing ran for 89 yards and gained 141 yards on 6 receptions. Chiefs QB Ulish Groce had a day he would rather forget as he was picked off 3 times including on successive drives to start the fourth quarter. The Raiders turned each of the 4th quarter picks into touchdowns to put the game away.

San Diego is very much in the hunt for the AFC West title after the Chargers trimmed Denver 19-17. Chargers defensive end Reggie White had 4 sacks. In all Denver QB Jay Cason was sacked 6 times and threw 4 interceptions.

BENTLEY SALVAGES TIE FOR LEAFS
Max Bentley banged home a rebound with just 7 seconds remaining in the game to give the Toronto Maple Leafs a 4-4 tie with the Red Wings in Detroit. The Leafs pulled goaltender Turk Broda in favour of an extra attacker with just under a minute left and the move paid off. Detroit had taken a 4-3 lead exactly at the midway point of the third period when Wings captain Sid Abel scored his second goal of the game. Ted Lindsay, with his league leading 9th goal, and Jim Conacher also scored for Detroit. Joe Klukay had a pair for the Leafs with Harry Watson getting his first of the year.

In Chicago winger Gaye Stewart had 2 goals and an assist to power the Blackhawks past New York 6-3. The Hawks won despite being outshot 50-31 by the visitors but Chicago goaltender Emile Francis was outstanding between the pipes.

*MIKAN'S 32 LEADS OLYMPIANS TO WIN
Returning to the lineup after missing a week with a wrist injury, Indianapolis Olympians center George *Mikan certainly made up for missed time, scoring 32 points and adding 14 rebounds to lead his club past Milwaukee 99-88. The win, coupled with St Louis losing 92-88 in Buffalo, moves the Olympians to first place in the Midwest Division. The Bombers loss was surprising when you consider they held Buffalo's superstar Miguel Dominguez to just 5 points. Backups Bruce *Hale and BB Larsen picked up the slack for the Braves, scoring 15 points each. Mac Thorpe had 26 to lead St Louis.

Elsewhere, Mo Hybarger had 25 points and Noah Baldin 23 as the Fort Wayne Pistons dumped Pittsburgh 105-85 while in Kansas City the hometown Kings lost 98-90 to Minneapolis. Joe *Fulks paced the Lakers with 24 points.

BOXING
LAMOTTA LOOKS GOOD IN WIN OVER LEVINE
1947 has not been kind to Jake LaMotta but the 26 year old middleweight may be back on track if last night's fight with Artie Levine in Cleveland is any indication. LaMotta throughly dominated the 23 year old Clevelander enroute to a unanimous decision victory. LaMotta improves to 16-2 with the win while Levine drops to 22-10-1.

LaMotta was a perfect 15-0 in the postwar tournament and began the year as the World Middleweight champion before a surprising loss to Tony Zale in January. Zale won the title by TKO when the referee was forced to stopped their bout because of a serious gash over LaMotta's eye. LaMotta rebounded with a unanimous decision over Steve Belloise before losing for the second time in three outings when Holman Williams earned a split decision win at Madison Square Garden in August. That loss cost LaMotta a rematch with Zale in December, a spot that the 28-1 Williams will take instead. With the win over Levine, LaMotta remains ranked 5th in his weightclass world wide.

LARGENT CARRIES RAMS PAST CARDINALS
Mike Largent ran for 97 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the St Louis Rams to a 17-6 win over the Cardinals in Arizona. The Rams took the lead on the first series of the game as their opening drive was capped by a 37 yard scamper by Largent. From there St Louis never looked back as the best Arizona could manage was a pair of field goals against the Rams defense. Arizona's lack of offensive pop was accentuated by 4 Cardinal turnovers.

The Rams win creates a three-way tie atop the NFC West Division as St Louis, Seattle and San Francisco all sit at 6-4. Arizona brings up the rear in the division with a 2-8 record.

Not quite as exiting as last season when the two squads were ranked 1-2 heading into their showdown in New York but the Irish will be fired up and looking to avenge last seasons loss.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
TOUGH DAY FOR PCC SOUTH
It was a rough season opening day for the two major Los Angeles schools as both UCLA and USC were upset. The 16th ranked Bruins fell 85-54 to Ohio State in Columbus as the *Pugh brothers came up big for the Buckeyes. Roy had 21 points and 10 rebounds while Les had 19 points and 7 boards. Senior guard Matt *Zunic had 29 points to lead the Bruins. The Trojans were embarrassed 54-45 at home by Eastern Illinois.

The North section of the Pacific Coast Conference had much greater success as Oregon and Washington each won big. The Ducks, who fell from 2nd to 13th in the polls after an early preseason tournament exit, rebounded with a 73-52 home win over Coastal Carolina. Junior forward Jake *Carter paced the Oregon attack with 29 points. The 5th ranked Washington Huskies destroyed Wright State 99-48 as forward Matthew Hawkins had 30 points and 29 boards in a dominating performance. San Francisco, ranked 17th in the new poll, had little trouble with Maryland in an 86-53 victory.

Number one ranked Holy Cross, fresh of a win in the preseason NIT, thumped Tennessee State 92-48 in their home opener. Sophomore guard Bob *Cousy led the Crusaders with 23 points. In other games involving ranked teams #18 CCNY topped Oklahoma 79-54 in New York while 11th ranked VMI was upset 97-76 at home by American University.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION
OLYMPIANS LOSE GAME AND *MIKAN
The Indianapolis Olympians fell 95-94 to Dallas but more of a concern was the fact that center George *Mikan reaggravated a wrist injury in the closing seconds and could miss two weeks. Mikan, who was playing just his second game after missing over a week with a similiar injury, scored 26 points and added 15 rebounds. He left the game with the Olympians up by 1 point with 45 seconds to play. Jarvis Ferguson sank a basket for the last two of his 20 points with 19 seconds remaining to give Dallas the win. Joe Cunningham led the Chaps with 28 points.

Mac Thorpe scored 26 points to lead St Louis past Baltimore 88-85. The win moves the Bombers back ahead of Indianapolis atop the Midwest Division. In Milwaukee the Hawks got 26 points from Goodwin Wozniak to beat Fort Wayne 95-83 while Providence rolled over New York 103-86 in the only other game.
