Awards

Pat Black missed out on the AL Reliever of the Year despite gaining more (15) 1st place votes than the winner, the Mariners Chris Sisk (12). Juan Anaya finished 5th in the voting.

Franchesco Kelly adds the AL Rookie of the Year to his Batting Title, an MVP short of matching Bobby Nickelberry’s legendary rookie season. AJ. Terry and Tonguar Zimmerman finished 4th and 5th, respectively.

Franchesco Kelly lost out on the MVP title to Toronto’s Fidel Carbajal while in the NL, the Padres F Ernest Buenrostro won a back-to-back MVP Award.

Pre-Arbitration Extensions & Trades

The Royals made no trades heading into arbitration talks, preferring to sign everyone and have the flexibility to trade during Free Agency.

Two multi-year extensions were agreed across the squad, with 2B Arturo Oramas rewarded for his Platinum Bat winning season with an 8-year extension worth $168m. Front loaded with 2048 being worth $28m, down to $18m in his age 31 season before two TO to finish seems a reasonable price to pay - $136m guaranteed is a bet on 17 WAR of value across 6 years on a $8m/WAR basis.

Juan Anaya is rewarded for another strong season, with his post season performances taken into account, with a 4-year, $52m contract. This is again frontloaded with a final year TO, $18m this year down to $10m in year 3. That is a 5 WAR over 3 seasons bet from the Royals.

Monday, November 4th , 2047
Signed 2B Arturo Oramas to a 8-year contract extension worth a total of $168,000,000.
Signed 2B Edgar Mir to a 1-year contract extension worth a total of $1,800,000.
Signed RP Bob Capozziello to a 1-year contract extension worth a total of $3,100,000.
Signed 1B Luis Aceves to a 1-year contract extension worth a total of $12,300,000.
Signed LF Chris Kern to a 1-year contract extension worth a total of $6,300,000.
Signed LF Josh Mangan to a 1-year contract extension worth a total of $10,000,000.
Saturday, November 9th , 2047
Signed RP Juan Anaya to a 4-year contract extension worth a total of $52,000,000.

Arbitration & Qualifying Offers

The Royals say goodbye to club legend Curt Bogans, out for another 5 months with a tough route to a bullpen assignment this seemed the best deal for everyone. Should he remain unsigned through his recovery an offer may materialise. Mike Asbury was never going to get the long-term contract he wanted and so the Royals thank him for his contribution to the World Series victory and will see which team matches his demands.

Saturday, November 23rd , 2047
RP Curt Bogans becomes a free-agent.
SP Mike Asbury becomes a free-agent.
RP Steve Mitchell was designated for assignment and placed on waivers.

Trades

The rest of November is very quiet for the Royals as they let new scout Joe Witkowski get up to speed with his scouting. The roster is strong without any additions, but there is an international free agent who may be an interesting option.

International Amateurs

We just completed our monthly private practice with many young international amateur free agents who we hope can aid our club in the coming years. It was great to meet the players in-person and get to know them better, and I was able to improve my scouting assessment on all invitees.

In fact some of the players impressed me, since they showcased a higher potential than I had previously expected from them:

Alexis Pelcastre, 17 year-old 3B out of Dominican Republic
Lean and athletic, Alexis Pelcastre hails from Cristóbal, Dominican Republic. He has an above average ability to put the ball in play and get hits. He has shown signs of raw power that may eventually deliver over-the-fence distance. Pelcastre projects to be an above average big league third baseman.

Ramiro Santana, 16 year-old C out of Venezuela
Ramiro Santana is a long, lean athletic catcher who was born in Los Guayos, Venezuela. He may not compete for batting titles, but still projects to hit for a .270 batting average. He has shown flashes of power and projects to hit an above average number of home runs. Santana probably won't be a star but he should still be a solid contributor.

However, a few invitees left me disappointed as they did not appear to match my previous assessment, although they may still end up being future stars:

Bruce Anglesey, 16 year-old RHP out of Australia
Born in Sunshine Coast, Australia, Bruce Anglesey is a real worm killer who will generate a high number of groundballs. He throws five pitches, with his bread and butter pitch a slider that lacks consistency. As he matures he'll need to improve his command and cut down on his walks. Anglesey possesses great talents and seems destined to eventually break out in a starter's role.

And other players that I was able to further assess were:
Julio Alvarado, 16 year-old C out of Dominican Republic
Juan Ochoa, 16 year-old RHP out of Panama
Jorge Ledesma, 16 year-old CF out of Dominican Republic
Arturo Moreno, 16 year-old C out of Venezuela
Jesus Quintero, 16 year-old CF out of Panama
Biagio Torrisi, 16 year-old 3B out of Venezuela
Sergio Villalpando, 16 year-old 1B out of Venezuela

Fall League News

Joe Teichner kept the Austin War Dogs hitters off balance all game long, as the Virginia Beach Maulers pitcher blanked the War Dogs, 7-0.

Teichner gave up 3 hits, struck out 10, and walked 0. In the postgame press conference, the left-hander was reluctant to talk about the outing at length.

"It was a nice win in a long season," he said. "I don't want to dwell too much on it."

It was a long day at the plate for the Glendale Desert Dogs at Desert Dogs Grounds. They never figured out Virginia Beach Maulers starter Joe Teichner and were shut out, 2-0. The left-hander baffled the Desert Dogs the entire game, yielding no runs and giving up 1 hit in a well-pitched outing. Teichner also totaled 10 strikeouts and 1 walk in the game.

We just completed our monthly private practice with many young international amateur free agents who we hope can aid our club in the coming years. It was great to meet the players in-person and get to know them better, and I was able to improve my scouting assessment on all invitees.

Bruce Anglesey, 16 year-old RHP out of Australia
Born in Sunshine Coast, Australia, Bruce Anglesey is a real worm killer who will generate a high number of groundballs. He will lean heavily on an excellent splitter, which is the best of his five pitches. He locates his pitches well and has average stuff. Anglesey has front of the rotation potential.

Sergio Villalpando, 16 year-old 1B out of Venezuela
Sergio Villalpando is a big 6-foot-3, 200-pound first baseman from Turmero, Venezuela. He has the power potential of a prototypical clean-up hitter. He exercises very good patience at the plate. One of his offensive shortcomings is that he fails to make contact regularly. Villalpando could develop into a productive regular on a contending team.

However, a few invitees left me disappointed as they did not appear to match my previous assessment, although they may still end up being future stars:

Arturo Moreno, 17 year-old C out of Venezuela
Arturo Moreno is a long, lean athletic catcher who was born in Caracas, Venezuela. Even with a still-developing body he consistently displays plus raw power and quickening bat speed. He has above average contact skills with a smooth swing, quick hands and good pitch recognition and he could hit for a .270 batting average. He should demonstrate good plate discipline. Moreno could develop into a productive regular on a contending team.

And other players that I was able to further assess were:
Jorge Ledesma, 16 year-old CF out of Dominican Republic

Rule 5 Draft Trades & 42-man Changes

The Royals had an active December, cleaning up their 42-man roster and preparing for the Rule 5 Draft.

Five trades, seven new names on the 42-man roster, and four players lost in the Rule 5 Draft is quite a turnover at the top of the organisation but Stewart is confident the Royals are stronger for it.

The majority of the trades were of players that were going to be Rule 5 eligible, had not broken into the Kansas City roster, and who had players above and below them with more upside or current ability.

However, two trades did see the Royals move on from MLB Champions. Firstly, C Nelson Canjura’s time was always going to run out with the #1 prospect in baseball finishing the season at AAA and he moves to the Rangers, with two MLB ready prospects Kevin Simpson and Andino Chigi, and $5m in cash. The Royals pick up prospect Ismael Casarez in return, a LF who the Royals new scout rates much higher than OSA so hopefully is the first return from Joe Witkowski.

The second major, and more controversial, trade see the Royals thank and say goodbye to OF Chris Kern and 3B DeMario Zamano. Both played crucial roles in the Royals 2047 World Series victory but were squeezed out as the Royals look to the future, Kern by Domingo Carrillo and Zamano by Joe Hyatt. The Royals add a couple of lower level prospects and will retain 45% of Chris Kern’s contract to make a deal with division rival the White Sox. The return is RHP T.J Nooks, under contract for three years through the rest of his 20s, but with Chicago picking up 45% of his salary, the Royals will not pay more than $12.2m in any season. Nooks led the AL in ERA in 2047, and is a 4-pitch ace with plus stuff, movement, and control, including plus-plus HRA. His stamina, at 45, is lower than the Royals would have liked but Stewart is confident Nooks will fit in at the top of the Royals rotation.

On the day of the Rule 5 draft, the Royals lost four players although only two, SP Jake Clark and 3B Juan Medina would be considered prospects and neither had a route to the big leagues in the coming season.

January 2048 – Offseason

Financial Update

The appointment of a new scouting director has seen the Royals player knowledge take a nosedive. Stewart, therefore, added an extra $10m into scouting for this year in an attempt to speed up the knowledge acquisition process.

As we get closer to the start of the season, I have reviewed the team's financial state as of this moment.
As a reminder, you have $298,000,000 available for the total team expenses for the season.

Bruce Anglesey, 17 year-old RHP out of Australia
Born in Sunshine Coast, Australia, Bruce Anglesey is a real worm killer who will generate a high number of groundballs. When he is fully developed, his repertoire should include an excellent splitter, a great changeup, a 12-to-6 curve, a great slider, and a sinker with good life. As he matures he'll need to improve his command and cut down on his walks. Anglesey's talent potential is high and projects to easily front a team's rotation.

Sergio Villalpando, 16 year-old 1B out of Venezuela
Sergio Villalpando is a big 6-foot-3, 200-pound first baseman from Turmero, Venezuela. He has the power potential of a prototypical clean-up hitter. He shows good pitch recognition at the plate. One of his offensive shortcomings is that he fails to make contact regularly. Villalpando has the potential to develop into a big league regular for the bulk of his career.

However, a few invitees left me disappointed as they did not appear to match my previous assessment, although they may still end up being future stars:

Arturo Moreno, 17 year-old C out of Venezuela
Arturo Moreno is a big 6-foot-4, 200-pound catcher from Caracas, Venezuela. He has plus power potential and has shown an advanced approach at the plate. He may not compete for batting titles, but still projects to hit for a .270 batting average. He should be good at working counts. Moreno has good potential and a very promising future.

And other players that I was able to further assess were:
Jorge Ledesma, 16 year-old CF out of Dominican Republic
Juan Ochoa, 16 year-old RHP out of Panama
Alexis Pelcastre, 17 year-old 3B out of Dominican Republic
Julio Alvarado, 16 year-old C out of Dominican Republic
Jesus Quintero, 17 year-old CF out of Panama
Ramiro Santana, 16 year-old C out of Venezuela
Biagio Torrisi, 16 year-old 3B out of Venezuela

Fall League News

It's time to celebrate in Virginia Beach.

Joe Teichner, the sturdy Maulers left-hander, has set a new career record for regular season wins, with 19. He breaks the record held by Rogelio Favela.

Maulers owner Erik Jamison was on-hand for the game at Tyrants Park and credited Teichner with having a "drive to excel."

"Joe has always been a real credit to the game of baseball," he said.

This season, Teichner has registered 11 wins and no losses in 11 starts with a 0.48 ERA.

Transactions

The Royals made a trade on the opening day of the International Amateur Signing Period to try to land two major talents. Tiago Duro was on the trading block in the run up the Rule 5 Drafy, while Mike Mott and Vincent Toribio are likely future Major Leaguers but neither have the defensive profile the Royals require. Unfortunately even the additional $2.85m in bonus pool money didn’t secure both star players, as Australian SP Bruce Anglesey took more than the $4m the Royals had to sign him.

They did secure the potential 80 power bat of Biagio Torrisi, out of Venezuela and February should see further signings with the enhanced pool money.

Wednesday, January 15th , 2048
Traded 23-year old minor league LF Tiago Duro, 21-year old minor league 3B Mike Mott, and 21-year old minor league SS Vincent Toribio to the Colorado Rockies, getting $2,850,000 in international amateur bonus pool room in return.
Monday, January 20th , 2048
Signed international amateur 3B Biagio Torrisi out of Venezuela to a minor league contract with a $3,600,000 signing bonus.

Preseason & Spring Training

The Royals survive Preseason injury free, and start Spring Training 3-0 but lose Juan Anaya for the start of the season to injury. Beyond that it is the usual opportunity to give innings and at bats to all members of the 42-man roster, with one Non-roster invite in C Dave Forester.

Transactions

As expected, the Royals completed their International Amateur class this month, bringing in four more players for a final class of 5 in 2048.

In addition, the Royals were informed that Curt Bogans signed a Major League contract with Tampa Bay for one year at $1.44m; the Royals wish him a healthy season but the lack of fan reaction suggests this was a sad, but sensible decision.

Spring Training

The Royals had a very successful on field Spring Training, going 21-7, the best record in the MLB. However, there were several injuries which will impact the opening day roster, although thankfully no season-enders!

C.J. Binkle missed two weeks of Spring Training but returned for the final few games, while Yoichiro Curtsinger and Eli Blyden were not so lucky. They will miss the start of the season with injuries of 6 and 2 weeks respectively.

Among batters, A.J. Terry and Arturo Oramas will both miss the start of the season, with Terry spraining his elbow and Oramas his hamstring; they will miss 5 and 4 week respectively.

In the middle of Spring Training, the Royals made the decision to bet big on the top-ranked prospect in baseball, handing Nelson Saiz a 12-year contract for $152m, with the final two years being Team Options, and the annual high being $15m. The Royals are betting on Saiz being worth 15 WAR over the next 10 years, a reasonable expectation for a player who put up a 162 OPS+ at AAA last year. This will be the weakest the Royals have been at catcher, however, defensively, a risk Stewart deemed worth taking for Sainz’s bat.

Major League Predictions

Normality is returned to the pre season predictions as the Royals are expected to the best team in the American League, and in baseball, as the only team predicted to have 100 wins. If predictions come true it will be behind the most runs and HRs, with the lowest ERA and most Strikeouts. The Royals will be very happy with a season that plays out that way. They don’t have any players featured in the top four hitters or pitchers but former Royal Greg Moehring does appear for the Yankees on the pitching list.

Over in the National League, the Mets are predicted to once again be top of the pile, with the only 90-win season. The Central Division is looking particularly competitive (in a bad way) with three teams within two games, 80-82 wins. No former Royals but back-to-back MVP Ernesto Buenrostro is predicted to be bidding for a hat-trick of awards come the end of the season.

Opening Day Lineup

A.J. Terry and Artuto Oramas both missing the start of the season provided the Royals with the chance to move some tough decisions down the road. This meant that both Juan Montelongo and Ken Crome survived the Spring Training cuts and opened the season on the 26-man roster. Both players will start, with Montelongo playing more prominently that Crome. Montelongo is out of options so will need a strong start to the season to return his place.

Optioned 2B Branson Huot to Triple A Omaha.
Optioned SS Joe Hyatt to Triple A Omaha.

Opening Day Pitching Battery

There are fewer surprises in the pitching corps although Juan Anaya’s injury does allow for a new closer to start the season, Chris Morrow getting that chance. Offseason T.J. Nooks will take the game one start, making the Royals strong all the way down the rotation, and a couple of LHPs in the rotation.

Mike Krebs will start out in a stopper role, along with Luis Danys Rhodes, while Joe Mays is a strong long relief / Emergency SP option. With C.J. Binkle to return, the bullpen is as competitive as ever. Krebs and Chris Curry will provide the LHP options, with Jeremy Stockoff the last cut as the Royals chose a long reliever over a specialist.

2048 Prospect Preview

KC Top Prospects

Two top five prospects start the season on the Major League roster, as if fans needed a reason to try to get a ticket to the two-time Champions this season.

Further dow, there is a healthy mix of Rookie through AAA players trying to make progress this season, including 149th-ranked Ken Crome, who opens the season on the big league roster.

MLB Farm Systems

The Royals top the annual farm system review, retaining a huge advantage over the Diamonbacks. The Mariners and the Giants are developing strong systems and are getting closer to Arizona but the top four systems are far ahead of the rest of the league this year.

Positive FIP- returns for the majority of the Royals pitching staff tells a story of being let down by luck and/or the defense. No concerns at the moment but something to keep an eye on.

Transactions & Injuries

The big hitting injury this month was to All-Star Bobby Nickelberry who will miss a month with a fractured foot after being hit by a pitch. This will give Eric McCabe his first chance at the Royals but it is likely to be a short stint with A.J. Terry heading for an injury rehab assignment in Omaha and now ready to return. Arturo Oramas is also on an Injury Rehab assignment, and that may lead to a more difficult decision for Stewart with one of Mir, Covete, Noriega, and Montelongo having to make way.

The Royals also lost T.J. Nooks for two weeks to some joint irritation, which saw Chad Johnston make his annual trip to Kansas City from Omaha. Juan Anaya is another on an injury rehab assignment, while Eli Bryden will open his season in Omaha after returning from injury.

Minor League News

At only 22 years of age, Branson Huot could very well have many more months like this last one during his career.

That would be great news for fans of the Omaha Storm Chasers, as April was one to remember for the second baseman and he has captured the International League Batter of the Month award.

On the month he hit .314 with 7 home runs, 21 RBIs and 29 runs scored.

When Andres Sandoval takes the hill, chances are good for a Omaha victory. At least that's the way it was in May.

He excelled with a 4-0 mark and 2.84 ERA in 5 starts, tossed 38 innings, fanned 28 and held others clubs to a .206 average.

That's why the Storm Chasers star was honored today as the Pitcher of the Month by the International League.

Transactions & Injuries

It was a month of movement for the Royals. It was mostly positive with A.J. Terry, Arturo Oramas, Juan Anaya, and Bobby Nickelberry all returning. That came at the expense of OF Eric McCabe and Ken Crome, as well as more surprisingly Edgar Noriega whose bat had just been cold to retain.

Tonguar Zimmerman has a day-to-day injury but the Royals decided to take no chances, shutting him down for a couple of weeks.

The disappointing injury, though, saw LHP Cason Willard suffer shoulder inflammation which will rule him out for 4 months, or most of the remainder of the season. T.J. Nooks was finishing up his rehab stint in Omaha and steps into Willard’s place.

Minor League News

Ken Logan really put his best foot forward in May with 4 wins and no losses and walked off with the Pitcher of the Month honors in the Texas League. When he got the start for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, it was good news for his club, but bad news for the opposition.

In 34.2 innings of work, Logan limited opposing batters to 22 base hits and a .183 batting average. He notched 38 strikeouts, issued 13 walks and had a 2.86 ERA.

So far this year, Logan has a 5-1 record with a 3.60 ERA.

Bernalldino Igrejas may be much younger than other hitters in the Midwest League, but he performed like a seasoned veteran in May to win the Batter of the Month award.

The 20-year-old Quad Cities third baseman hit .354 with 13 home runs, 34 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

This season, Igrejas has 14 home runs and a .331 batting average.

Around the League

Curt Bogans of the Rays is hanging it up. The veteran reliever reportedly told team officials yesterday that he would not return for another season.

"The time has come for me to give up a game I love dearly, but the time is right. Baseball has been good for me and I hope I have been good for baseball."

"While we are disappointed Curt will not be playing for us next year, I have a tremendous amount of respect for him and the way he went about this decision," said the Tampa Bay general manager.

Bogans has a career spanning 376 appearances. He has earned 6 saves and posted 1942 strikeouts in 1922.2 innings. His record is 159-71 and he has a 3.19 ERA.

Ethan Chafin is struggling so far this season, while C.J. Binkle was not the only reliever to struggle over the course of the month. Reinforcements might be needed for this Royals pitching staff, despite leading the AL in multiple pitching statistics.

Transactions & Injuries

It was a very quiet month for the Royals although it could have finished in a bad way with Bobby Nickelberry once again being hit by a pitch; he is still waiting for a diagnosis three days later which doesn’t bode well.

Minor League News

It was a good month for Omaha Storm Chasers left fielder Ken Crome, June's International League Batter of the Month.

Crome starred by hitting .333 with a .416 on-base percentage. He totaled 32 hits in 96 at-bats, 14 home runs, 30 RBIs and scored 22 runs.

Currently Crome is batting .343 with 14 home runs and 30 RBIs.

The Royals have six All-Stars despite three of their 2047 selections suffering several injuries in Arturo Oramas, A.J. Terry, and Bobby Nickelberry. Luis Aceves received the most fan votes in the AL to earn his third All-Star selection. Joining Aceves amongst hitters are rookie C Nelson Saiz, and second-time selection Estanislau Covete. On the pitching side, Ben Lane earns his first All-Star selection, as does Joe Mays, while Luis Danys Rhodes earns his 8th.

There are five former Royals selected including a whole outfield of players traded over the summer in Chris Kern, DeMario Zamano and Chad Ketcham. In addition, Juan Minnelli earns his 4th selection while Royals fans are warmed to see Eddie Baquerizo his 4th selection, and first since 2041.

SP Ben Lane (KC) - 8-5, 3.96 ERA, 120.1 IP, 1.02 WHIP, 8.2 K/9, 2.4 WAR
RP Joe Mays (KC) - 6-0, 1.55 ERA, 52.1 IP, 1.07 WHIP, 9.6 K/9, 1.4 WAR
RP Luis Danys Rhodes (KC) - 7-5, 14 SV, 2.51 ERA, 64.2 IP, 1.04 WHIP, 9.7 K/9, 1.6 WAR
C Nelson Saiz (KC) - .317/.411/.544, 259 AB, 12 HR, 1 SB, 158 wRC+, 3.0 WAR
1B Luis Aceves (KC)* - .269/.363/.626, 305 AB, 29 HR, 13 SB, 158 wRC+, 3.1 WAR
3B Estanislau Covete (KC)* - .295/.400/.522, 224 AB, 12 HR, 9 SB, 150 wRC+, 2.0 WAR

RP Eddie Baquerizo (LAA) - 1-1, 3.31 ERA, 35.1 IP, 1.02 WHIP, 8.4 K/9, 0.7 WAR
LF Chris Kern (CWS) - .278/.389/.525, 263 AB, 17 HR, 1 SB, 146 wRC+, 2.6 WAR
LF DeMario Zamano (CWS) - .303/.352/.568, 347 AB, 21 HR, 5 SB, 145 wRC+, 2.9 WAR
RF Chad Ketcham (CWS) - .337/.411/.515, 264 AB, 10 HR, 155 wRC+, 2.3 WAR
LF Juan Minnelli (SF)* - .313/.388/.612, 361 AB, 22 HR, 5 SB, 166 wRC+, 4.1 WAR

An easy win for the American League, 7-0, with Joe Mays and Luis Danys Rhodes both contributing, a scoreless inning, giving up 0 H, 0 BB, Rhodes just 1 H. Luis Aceves has the most impactful All-Star game from a Royal in recent history, his 1-3 day featuring a 3R HR. Nelson Saiz went 0-1 but took a walk, with Estanislau Covete was 0-2.

There is a definite tale of injuries and underperformance to go with some expected high levels across the Royals. A.J. Terry, Bobby Nickelberry, and Artuto Oramas have all been above average but haven’t been able to stay fit. Meanwhile, Joe Hyatt, Juan Montelongo, Edgar Noriega, Ken Crome and, recently, Jorge Joaquin have all struggled. Luckily rookie Nelson Saiz is having an elite rookie season while Luis Aceves is slugging at even better levels than previously, with 29 HRs already. Estanislau Covete has a 152 wRC+ while Jadon Tezeno has 20 HRs for the season.

Name: ASB Arms.jpg

Losing Ethan Chafin for the rest of the season heading into the All-Star Break is a tough break but he was the only Royal with a FIP- above 100, struggling with HRs. The Royals will be on the lookout for a pitcher as the trade deadline approaches but must be happy with T.J. Nooks, Ben Lane, and Benton Geldart. Amongst the relievers, all 10 players used have a FIP- below 100 so there is little need for too much change, the only question marks being on the ability of Mike Krebs as a stopper with his 9:7 SD:MD ratio, and the usage of Albert Regalado in high leverage situations with his 5:5 ratio. Luis Danys Rhodes is as elite as always, his 20:7 ratio with 15 saves offering stability to the Royals.

You have done a heck of a job so far with this team. To hit our preseason goal of making the postseason, you'll have to keep it up. I know you can do it.

During our time working together, I have been good with your progress towards the goals I have set out for you. Considering your current and past successes, I am ecstatic with your overall performance. It's important to have success on-field and in the boardroom, and you seem to be on that path.

The MLB Prospects Game is the premier showcase event for the stars of tomorrow. This year's game did not disappoint, introducing fans to some of the top prospects who soon will become household names.

Like Jonathan Lish, named MVP in this year's contest. He brought his A-game. "I wanted to make the most of it," he said. "I didn't want to leave here with any regrets."

2048 Draft

The Royals enjoyed the 34th pick in a large first round in 2048 and, as has become the norm in recent years, took a high school player with their first pick. That was 3B Pat Mumley, out of Arizona. The 3B has little defensive capability, nor speed, but projects plus contact, plus-plus power, and an above average eye to suggest he could be an elite hitter. Witkowski suggests Mumley has ‘good potential and a very promising future’.

Name: K1 Pat Mumley.jpg
Views: 11
Size: 339.5 KB

The Royals stuck high school over the rest of their top 5 picks, with a very bat heavy top to their draft:

• Round 2, Pick 32 - CF Robby Baker, age 19 out of high school
• Round 3, Pick 29 - SS Steve Foister, age 18 out of high school
• Round 4, Pick 30 - CF Andy Rainey, age 18 out of high school
• Round 5, Pick 30 - CF Hudson Girton, age 18 out of high school

The Royals signed all twenty of their draft class, with Stewart taking the aggressive approach of promoting all of the College-aged players straight to A ball, despite some of them looking overmatched for that level. That meant five players earning playing time in 2048, including their 6th, 7th, and 8th round picks:

• Round 6: C Ernesto Valle
• Round 7: SS Kurt Ferullo
• Round 8: CF Bobby Friedland
• Round 15: RP Jaquan Geneus
• Round 20: CL Dan McHugh
