Hey bud, you know if you go to Screen Setup and set the Stats Rankings to 1x2 you won't need to manually pose them in the up / down scroll like you do?

Only a small thing I know, but still thought you'd be interested.

My intention was to play from 1951 and cover the entire careers of Mays, Mantle, Aaron, and Bonds. I don't have retire according to history enabled. Bonds didn't retire after 2007 as he did historically. The Twins signed him and due to his poor fielding used him only as a pinch hitter.

After 2008 he didn't retire. On a 20 scale my scout has him as contact 7, power 10, eye 16, LF 1. He hit two HRs in 07 and is 67 behind the all time leader Mark McGwire. He's not going to catch McGwire.

2009 starts a new era for the Pirates. Its the rookie seasons of Andrew McCutchen and Neil Walker. I don't want to play this era and I'm not going to do it just because Bonds wants to be a 60 or 70 AB PH for the year. So I'm ending it here, Fall of 2008.

This has been a fun experience. It increased my GM skill and I really enjoyed writing the "newspaper" articles.

Luck With Over Performing Players

Given the payroll limitations, historical rookies, and free agency from the beginning, its necessary to have some cheap non traditional trades/signings over perform. The biggest of this save is Connie Johnson.

Historically Johnson didn't get his chance in MLB until 1953 at age 30 and was back in the minors in 54. He came back up in 55 and had an OK but nothing special career.

In this save the Pirates traded for him in 53 and kept him in the minors until late 55. He made the rotation in 56 and was 16-12 with a 2.82 ERA. In 57 he was 18-8 with a 2.53 ERA and won the Cy Young award. He won the Cy again in 58 going 23-4 with a 2.06 ERA. Johnson continued to pitch for the Pirates in 59 and 60 with reasonable though lesser success and then went to the minors for two years before retiring.

Overall Johnson's MLB record was 77-39 in 149 starts (he never appeared in relief) with a 2.78 ERA. Despite his short career Johnson is among the top ten Pirates in career marks for WAR, ERA, winning percentage, complete games, and shutouts.

If a team can't spend big money or game the draft, its needs a bit of luck!

I was hoping to have an average payroll a bit lower than this. But I think pretty decent for a first try. I was halfway through the game before I learned to sign a couple cheap veterans for a position and hope one them worked out. I remember at age 32 or 33 Richie Hebner was on the FA late and I signed him two years at minimum wage. The second year he hit 32 or 33 HRs.

Thank you for the kind comments.

Since the years selected were to cover the full careers of Mantle, Mays, Aaron, and Bonds, some might be interested in the HR totals. Also including BA and WAR. Recall baseball doesn't exist before 1951.
