The State of Sumo
Entering 1761, the fourth year of this Sumo universe. Yokozuna - We still have a single Yokozuna. Yukimiyama Tetsuemon broke a three Yusho streak in November 1760 losing to Ozeki Shirakawa Shigaemon. It was Shirakawa's fourth Yusho and he will once again attempt to claim a Yusho in March of 1761 to gain promotion to Yokozuna. Finishing as runner up with the same record as the winner (Jun-Yusho) will also qualify him for promotion. Ozeki Run - Genjiyama Sumiemon, currently at Sekiwake rank, has a 22-8 record over his last two bashos. He needs 11 wins in March to be promoted to Ozeki status. Arasuna Tokiemon - After two full years, Arasuna has risen to the rank of Komusubi and will be looking for another solid basho and elevation to Sekiwake rank where he could earn Ozeki status as early as July of 1761. New Comers - There are three new rikishi in the Makus-hita division that may rise as quickly as Arasuna did. Odoji Minaemon, Arataki Godayu and Oshima Uraemon will start the March basho at the bottom of the Makus-hita. Attached is the record book file. Links to Rikishi are on the first worksheet and each individual page links back to the index in the top left cell.

I hear Paul has abandoned plans to make a boxing sim in favour of designing a Sumo Wrestling sim. Should be out sometime next year.

I recently picked up Joe's game. I knew virtually nothing about sumo, but after two months of playing it and doing some research, I'm hooked! Have you read David Benjamin's Sumo: A Thinking Fan's Guide to Japan's National Sport? Very informative, well-written, and humorous. I'm enjoying this thread! Prof |

Have you watched any of the basho feeds available through Youtube? My brother , father and I have been following the tournaments for about a year and a half and have a great time talking about them (much to our wives' chagrin) while they play out. Kisenosato apparently will officially be promoted to Yokozuna status tomorrow. This will be a huge thing over there as he is the first Japanese Yokozuna in about a decade (the top has been controlled by Mongolian rikishi for some time).
