Denver raced to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but immediately coughed it up in the second inning. The score remained deadlocked at 2-2 through five innings, but the Dolphins went ahead 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning when left-fielder Albert Chichester hit his second homerun of the game. Miami's lead didn't last long. The Broncos struck for 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth and hung on for the victory, despite yet another shaky save attempt by Lamont Ruvalcaba(he allowed a run in the ninth inning). The second game against the Dolphins proved to be somewhat easier. Shortstop Arthur Stice hit a 3-run homerun in the first inning, and after Miami scored a run in the second inning, the Broncos tacked on 3 more runs, courtesy of a Masahachirou Shunji homerun, in the bottom of the third, for a 6-1 lead. The Broncos picked up some insurance, with a run in the seventh inning, and two more in the eighth. Those runs nearly became very important, as Miami scored 4 runs off of reliever Larry Waltz in the ninth inning. Waltz eventually managed to finish off the Dolphins to preserve the win. Sweeping the Dolphins is usually a pretty difficult task, and this series was no exception. Arthur Stice homered in the second inning to give Denver an early 1-0 lead. Miami tied it in the fifth inning, when reserve infielder Shawn Deputy hit his first career homerun. The Broncos reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth, but starter Thomas Fons, who had done a good job at keeping the Dolphins in check to that point, couldn't maintain it. Miami scored twice in the sixth inning, and added runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Denver managed a ninth inning run, but couldn't complete the comeback. Masahachirou Shunji knocked in 2 runs, and Kenny Pillsbury gave up only 4 hits in 8 innings to lead Denver to a 3-1 win over Washington. Despite pounding out 17 hits in the second game against the Senators, the Broncos were unable to overcome a poor start from Robert McNett. The knuckle-baller surrendered 4 runs in the first two innings, and after Denver had closed the gap to 4-3 through 5 1/2 innings, he got into trouble in the sixth inning. Washington plated 2 runs in that inning. After the Broncos cut the Washington lead to 6-4 in the seventh inning, the Senators had another 2-run inning, in the bottom of the eighth, to put Denver away for good. The third game got off to an ugly start, as the Senators exploded for 5 runs in the second inning. Second-baseman Booker Romero, however, triggered the Broncos' rally, with a 2-run homerun in the third inning. An inning later, right-fielder Marvin Lore produced a 2-run blast of his own, and Denver trailed 5-4. The Broncos evened the score in the sixth inning, with an RBI double from third-baseman Michael Phillips. Washington retook the lead in the eighth inning, but it was a short-lived lead. Denver tied the game at 6-all in the ninth inning. The game proceeded into extra innings, but through 13, neither team could get the advantage. Finally, in the top of the 14th inning, catcher Lee Chappel belted a solo homerun- incredibly, his first of the season- and first-baseman Ellis Bolling added a 2-run single to give the Broncos a 3-run lead. Lamont Ruvalcaba, who had entered the game in the previous inning, pitched a scoreless 14th to pick up the victory. The final game of the series was much easier. Denver struck for 3 first inning runs, and led 5-0 through five innings. Washington got on the board in the sixth inning, but 2-run homeruns from Russell Thomas(in the seventh inning) and Jose Fuensanta(in the eighth) ended any chance of a Washington comeback. There were a number of quality offensive performances this week. Alexis Vazquez produced a 1.233 OPS, with 14 hits, a double, a homerun, 5 RBI, and 6 runs scored. Arthur Stice had a 1.182 OPS, with 9 hits, a double, 3 homeruns, 7 RBI, 5 runs scored, and 5 walks. Marvin Lore had a 1.116 OPS, 9 hits, 3 doubles, 1 homerun, 4 RBI, 5 runs scored, and 4 walks. Lee Chappel posted a 1.028 OPS, with 9 hits, 2 doubles, 1 homerun, and 5 runs scored. Masahachirou Shunji had a 1.008 OPS, with a double, a homerun, and 5 RBI. Russell Thomas had an .867 OPS, with 12 hits, a double, a homerun, and 5 RBI. Booker Romero had an .861 OPS, with 10 hits, a double, and a homerun. Not everyone had a good week, though. Ellis Bolling continued his poor start, with a 6 for 27, .609 OPS performance. Michael Phillips went just 4 for 26, and had a .503 OPS. Robert Shults, who had gotten off to a pretty good start, cooled off, with a 4 for 19, .496 OPS week. On the mound, Kenny Pillsbury impressed, as he tossed 8 innings, and allowed only 4 hits and 1, unearned, run. Ray Lockridge made 2 starts, and also looked pretty good. In 15 innings, he surrendered just 2 runs, and had an 8/1 K/BB ratio. Thomas Fons was mediocre, with 11 hits, 4 runs, and 3 walks allowed in 7 innings pitched. George Buentello made 2 starts, and finished with 18 hits and 8 runs allowed in 11 2/3 innings. Robert McNett surrendered 10 hits and 5 runs in 5 innings pitched in his lone start. From the bullpen, Robert Soto pitched 3 scoreless innings, while Alex Haider managed 2 innings without allowing a run. Cornelius Saari led the bullpen with 7 1/3 innings pitched, and he allowed just 2 runs, while compiling a 6/0 K/BB ratio. Lyndon Gwinn allowed 1 run in 4 innings pitched. On the other hand, Lamont Ruvalcaba gave up 3 runs in 3 innings pitched, and Larry Waltz coughed up 4 runs in 1 inning of work. On Denver's schedule this week is a 3 game series at Knoxville(14-4) and a 3 game series against Kansas City(5-14). Around the league: The National League Player of the Week Award went to San Diego's left-fielder, Gregorio Ruiz. It is the 6th POTW award of Ruiz's career. The veteran slugger hit .458(11 for 24), with a 1.702 OPS, 2 doubles, 5 homeruns, 12 RBI, and 9 runs scored during the week. He doubled, homered, drove in 2 runs, and scored 2 runs in a 14-8 thumping of San Jose. He doubled, homered, drove in 1 run, and scored 2 runs in a 9-5 win over the Sharks. He had 4 hits, including 2 homeruns, 4 RBI, and 3 runs scored in an 11-5 thrashing of San Jose. Ruiz had a 3-run homerun in a 6-0 blanking of Rochester. He also had 2 hits, 2 RBI, and a run scored in an 11-4 loss to the Rhinos. The American League Player of the Week Award went to Nashville's left-fielder, Alvin Carillo. It is Carillo's first ever POTW award. The 27 year old Carillo hit .435(10 for 23), with a 1.726 OPS, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 4 homeruns, 9 RBI, and 9 runs scored. He had 2 homeruns, 3 RBI, and 2 runs scored in an 8-6 loss to Kansas City. He had 3 hits, including 2 doubles, and a run scored in a 10-8 win over the Royals. He doubled, homered, drove in 2 runs, and scored a run in a 7-5 loss to Charlotte. He had 2 hits, including a triple, 3 walks, 1 RBI, and 3 runs scored in a 15-5 rout over the Panthers. He had a 2-run homerun, 2 walks, and 2 runs scored in a 10-2 spanking of Charlotte. Divisional Update: NL West- A 9-game winning streak which was snapped at the end of the week allowed San Diego(14-4) to take control of this division. Los Angeles(12-6) and San Jose(10-8) occupy second and third place, respectively. NL Northeast- Hartford(12-6) now sits in first place, with Buffalo(11-8) right behind the Whalers. AL Southeast- Knoxville(14-4) is tied with the Padres for the best record in baseball. Atlanta has won 4 straight to move to 12-7 and into second place. Miami sits in third, at 11-8. AL Central- The Broncos have taken command quickly, while Memphis and Tucson battle it out for second place. Kansas City currently owns the worst record in baseball; a 6-game losing streak has contributed heavily to that. Injury News: There was only one major injury this week, but it was a big one. Buffalo's starting pitcher Jonathan Zinn(1-1, 4.12 ERA) suffered a torn biceps, and is likely done for the year. Although the Bills have good starting pitching depth, it is never a good thing to lose a quality starter, especially in a tightly contested division where even the slightest thing can mean the difference between making the playoffs or having lots of free time in October.

In the first game against the 79ers, Denver broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning with a 4-run outburst, but quickly squandered that lead by allowing 2 runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the eighth inning, however, the Broncos plated 5 runs- 2 from a 2-out double by Lee Chappel and 2 from a 2-out homerun by Arthur Stice- to take a 10-5 lead. Denver cushioned its lead in the top of the ninth inning, when Russell Thomas, Gabriel Esqueda, and Alexis Vazquez hit back to back to back homeruns(with 2 outs, by the way). Knoxville mustered a brief rally, scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't complete the comeback. The Broncos clung to a 3-1 lead heading into the ninth inning of the second game, when Ellis Bolling provided some insurance with a 2-run homer in the ninth. It was a good thing that he came through with that hit, as the 79ers finally got to a tiring Robert McNett. The knuckleballer had piled up 12 strikeouts to that point, but gave up 2 runs in the ninth. Reliever Lamont Ruvalcaba also gave up a run in his effort to close out the game, but the Broncos escaped with the victory. The final game of the series was close for six innings, as the score was tied at 2 to that point. Disaster befell Knoxville after that, as Denver exploded for 3 runs in the seventh inning and 5 runs in the eighth inning, cruising to a comfortable win. Alexis Vazquez and Arthur Stice each drove in 3 runs in the game. The hapless Royals proved to be no contest for the Broncos. Denver rolled over Kansas City in the first game, pulling away with a 5-run seventh inning. Vazquez and Stice each knocked in 4 runs. All 4 of Stice's RBI came on a grand slam in that seventh inning. Vazquez, on the other hand, produced a pair of 2-run homeruns. In the second game, Kansas City actually led 5-1 through 5 1/2 innings. Unfortunately for the Royals, Denver scored 3 runs in the sixth inning, 4 runs in the seventh inning, and 1 more in the eighth inning. The Royals' pitchers issued 14 walks in this game, 3 apiece to Lee Chappel and Adrian Mingo. In the third, and final game of the series, the Broncos turned a 1-0 fifth inning lead into a 5-0 lead. Kansas City got on the board with 2 runs in the sixth, but Denver matched the Royals in the bottom half of that inning. Kansas City scored again in the seventh inning, but Ellis Bolling produced a 2-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 9-3 game. The game got very interesting in the ninth inning, when Alex Haider completely failed in his attempt to mop things up. Haider faced 5 batters, surrendered 4 hits, 1 walk, and 5 runs without recording any outs. Lamont Ruvalcaba managed to clean up his mess without blowing the lead, but what should have been an easy victory became a narrow escape. Even at the age of 37, Alexis Vazquez has the ability to carry a team for a period of time. This past week, he produced a 1.610 OPS, with 13 hits, 3 doubles, 4 homeruns, 13 RBI, and 8 runs scored. Of course, he wasn't the only hot hitter in the Broncos' lineup. Adrian Mingo managed a 1.421 OPS with 3 doubles, 5 walks, and 5 runs scored. Lee Chappel had a 1.359 OPS, with 4 doubles, 1 homerun, 6 RBI, 10 runs scored, and 7 walks. Arthur Stice delivered a 1.273 OPS, with a double, 2 homeruns, 11 RBI, and 4 runs scored. Russell Thomas had a 1.092 OPS, 2 doubles, 1 homerun, 11 RBI, and 7 runs scored. Ellis Bolling's week paled in comparison to those guys, but given how much he has struggled this season, a solid week is worthy of mention. He posted an .846 OPS, with 2 doubles, 2 homeruns, 5 RBI, and 5 runs scored. Not everyone was so successful. Michael Phillips was 3 for 13 with a .593 OPS. Booker Romero was 4 for 24 with a .551 OPS. Masahachirou Shunji and Brooks Branco managed to combined for an 0 for 25 week, although Shunji did draw 5 walks. The starting pitching was mostly solid; however, the rotation was dealt a significant blow. George Buentello pitched only 3 innings against Knoxville, with 1 run allowed, before leaving with an injury. The diagnosis was a torn back muscle, and Buentello's season is over. Given that he will turn 34 in about a week, this injury could mean his days as a solid starter are over. Meanwhile, Ray Lockridge surrendered only 1 run in 6 innings and Robert McNett pitched 8 1/3 innings with 3 hits, 3 runs, and 12 strikeouts. Kenny Pillsbury made 2 starts, and allowed 8 runs in 12 2/3 innings for a 5.68 ERA. Thomas Fons gave up 5 runs in 6 2/3 innings pitched. Robert Soto had a very good week out of the 'pen, as he tossed 4 2/3 scoreless innings and recorded 2 victories. Lyndon Gwinn impressed with 3 scoreless innings and a win. Larry Waltz and Alex Haider struggled, as they combined to allow 9 runs, all earned, in 5 2/3 innings pitched. Getting the first crack at replacing Buentello in the rotation is 31 year old right-hander Walter Ortiz. The former first round draft pick has a 2.05 ERA and a 29/2 K/BB ratio in 4 AAA starts thus far this season. However, Ortiz has only 4 career big league appearances, and only one career start. In 10 innings, he's surrendered 18 hits and 11 earned runs. As the month of April comes to a close, Denver's schedule features a 3 game series against Green Bay(11-14) and a 3 game series at Nashville(10-14). Around the league: The National League Player of the Week Award went to San Jose's center-fielder, Eric Alexander. The speedy outfielder won his first ever POTW award after hitting .433(13 for 30), with a 1.333 OPS, a double, 2 triples, 3 homeruns, 11 RBI, and 9 runs scored. He doubled and tripled, drove in a run, and scored a run in an 11-5 win over Phoenix. He had 3 hits, including a homerun, 1 RBI, and 3 runs scored in a 15-13 win over the Cardinals. He had 3 hits, including a homerun, 2 RBI, and a run scored in a 6-5 win over Pittsburgh. He had 2 hits, including a triple, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored in a 9-5 win over the Pirates. He had 3 hits, including a homerun, 4 RBI, and 2 runs scored in another 9-5 win over Pittsburgh The American League Player of the Week Award went to Denver's Alexis Vazquez. It is the 11th time in his career that Vazquez has won a POTW award. Vazquez had 3 hits, including a homerun, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored in a 13-8 win over Knoxville. He had 2 hits, including a double, 3 RBI, and a run scored in a 10-2 win over the 79ers. He had a pair of homeruns, 4 RBI, and 3 runs scored in a 10-1 rout over Kansas City. He doubled and homered in a 9-5 win over the Royals. Finally, he had 4 hits, including a double, 2 RBI, and a run scored in a 9-8 win over Kansas City. Divisional Update: NL West- San Diego(18-6) maintained its lead in this division, while Los Angeles and San Jose are tied for second place with identical 15-9 records. NL Northeast- No changes here, either. Hartford(15-9) is in first place, while Buffalo(13-12) sits in second. AL Southeast- The red-hot Atlanta Braves(17-8) took over first place; Atlanta has won 9 of its last 10 games. Knoxville(15-9) sits in second place, ahead of Miami(14-11). AL Central- Denver's 8 game winning streak has given the Broncos the best record in baseball, but second place Tucson has gotten on a roll, as well, with 4 straight victories. Grand Rapids and Kansas City are in a freefall. Injury News: Other than George Buentello, there weren't any serious injuries this week, although Kansas City's veteran outfielder, Alfonso Velazquez(.662 OPS) suffered a fractured hip, and will be out for 3 weeks. The 37 year old Velazquez has 441 career homeruns, but given both his and the Royals' slow starts, no one in Kansas City is considering this a disastrous injury.

April 29, 2086 to May 5, 2086: Weekly Recap
Green Bay 9 @ Denver 5
Green Bay 11 @ Denver 8 Green Bay 0 @ Denver 7 Denver 6 @ Nashville 8 Denver 12 @ Nashville 8 Denver 8 @ Nashville 0 Just when Denver was starting to solidify its hold on the Central Division, the Broncos unexpectedly stumbled a bit against some weaker foes. Robert McNett dug a hole that the Broncos couldn't quite dig themselves out from when he gave up 5 first inning runs in the first game against the Packers. Denver managed to close the gap to 5-4 heading into the sixth, as Russell Thomas, Arthur Stice, and Ellis Bolling all hit homeruns, but Green Bay struck for 3 more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Not even another homerun from Stice, in the bottom of the sixth, could spark a rally. In the second game against Green Bay, Ray Lockridge attempted to duplicate McNett's efforts by coughing up 6 runs in the second inning and 2 more in the third inning. This time, the Broncos were able to mount a successful rally. Denver scored 3 runs in the bottom of the third, and tied the game up with a 5-run fifth inning. The tie game didn't last long, however, as Green Bay scored 2 runs in the sixth and 1 run in the seventh to secure the second game of the series. Denver salvaged the final game of the series on the strength of a surprising start from Walter Ortiz. In only his second career start, Ortiz tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings and the Broncos cruised to an easy win. Marvin Lore doubled twice and drove in 4 runs, while Ellis Bolling and Booker Romero each hit homeruns. The Broncos then headed to Nashville and in the first game of the series, saw Thomas Fons do his best to match McNett and Lockridge. The Predators' designated-hitter, Thomas Stallman, ripped a grand slam in the first inning, quickly putting Denver in a big hole. The Broncos cut Nashville's lead to 5-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, but third-baseman Andrew Pizano delivered a 3-run double to allow the Predators to pull away again. Denver cut the deficit to 2 runs with a 3-run seventh inning, but that was as close as the Broncos would get. Lee Chappel produced a triple, 2 homeruns, 3 RBI, and 3 runs scored in the losing effort. Arthur Stice doubled, homered, and drove in 3 runs. In the second game against Nashville, it was the Broncos that took control early. Russell Thomas led off the game with a homerun, and 2-run homeruns by Arthur Stice and Gabriel Esqueda in the third inning turned a 2-1 lead into a 6-1 lead. Both teams scored twice in the sixth inning, making the score 8-3. In the seventh inning, Masahachirou Shunji and Ellis Bolling both hit homeruns, and Denver scored 4 runs altogether. The Predators managed 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh, and 2 more in the bottom of the ninth, but their rally came up short. In the final game against Nashville, Robert McNett bounced back from his poor start earlier in the week and blanked the Predators for 7 innings. Shunji broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning with a 2-run homerun, and the Broncos added runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Denver officially put the game out of reach with a 4-run ninth inning, in which Arthur Stice contributed a 2-run homerun. Ellis Bolling had a superb week, posting a 1.331 OPS, with a double, a triple, 3 homeruns, 6 RBI, and 6 runs scored. Arthur Stice delivered a 1.245 OPS, 2 doubles, 5 homeruns, 12 RBI, and 7 runs scored. Lee Chappel, who has actually been quiet(by his standards, at least) so far this year, managed a 1.121 OPS, with 2 doubles, a triple, 2 homeruns, 4 RBI, and 6 runs scored. Alexis Vazquez had a rare "off" week, with just a .632 OPS, 1 extra base hit(a double), and only 3 RBI. Michael Phillips managed only a .684 OPS, going 2 for 9 with no extra base hits and 1 RBI. Masahachirou Shunji's week was a mixed bag. On the one hand, he collected just 3 hits in 16 at bats, for a .188 batting average, and had 7 strikeouts. On the other hand, his 3 hits consisted of a double and 2 homeruns, which boosted his OPS to an excellent .903 total. The starting pitching was definitely less than stellar. Walter Ortiz impressed, of course, with 6 1/3 scoreless innings. He gave 6 hits and 2 walks, and collected 2 strikeouts. Robert McNett's total numbers were mediocre: 17 hits and 8 runs(7 earned) allowed in 13 innings for a 4.85 ERA. Thomas Fons surrendered 9 hits, 5 walks, and 8 runs(5 earned) in 6 innings pitched. Kenny Pillsbury allowed 6 runs in 7 innings of work. Ray Lockridge was the worst of all, however, with 10 runs allowed in 6 innings. Robert Soto tossed 3 scoreless innings of relief, and piled up 5 strikeouts in the process. Lyndon Gwinn pitched 4 innings and allowed only 1 run. Alex Haider continued his shaky pitching, with 2 runs allowed in 2 innings of work. Around the league: The National League Batter of the Month Award went to San Diego's left fielder, Gregorio Ruiz. It is Ruiz's second career BOTM award. During the month of April, Ruiz hit .450/.507/.983/1.491, with 27 hits, 8 doubles, 8 homeruns, 24 RBI, and 23 runs scored. The National League Pitcher of the Month Award went to San Diego's Casey Greene. It is the second POTM award of Greene's career. Greene was 4-0 in 5 April starts, with a 1.46 ERA, a 0.84 WHIP, and a 21/1 K/BB in 37 innings pitched. The American League Batter of the Month Award went to Atlanta's right-fielder, Flavio Trujillo. This is the 36 year old Trujillo's first ever BOTM award. Trujillo hit .440/.531/.835/1.366 with 40 hits, 10 doubles, a triple, 8 homeruns, 25 RBI, 24 runs scored, and 19 walks. The American League Pitcher of the Month Award went to Miami's Christian Hokusai. It is the 6th time that Hokusai has won the POTM award. Hokusai was 6-0 in 6 starts, with a 2.23 ERA, a 0.87 WHIP, and a 44/9 K/BB in 40 1/3 innings pitched. The National League Player of the Week Award went to Sacramento's first-baseman Nestor Adrover. It is Adrover's 4th career POTW award. Adrover hit .435(10 for 23), with a 1.457 OPS, 3 doubles, 3 homeruns, 7 RBI, and 8 runs scored during the past week. He had 3 hits, including a double and a homerun, 3 RBI, and 2 runs scored in a 9-6 loss to Los Angeles. He had a solo homerun in a 14-5 loss to the Dodgers. He doubled and scored a run in a 5-3 win against Los Angeles. He had 3 hits, including a double and a homerun, and 3 RBI in a 9-7 loss to the Dodgers. Adrover had 2 hits and 3 runs scored in an 11-8 win against Rochester. The American League Player of the Week Award went to Tucson's first-baseman Emil Cuestas. It is the 10th POTW award of Cuestas' career. Cuestas hit .500(12 for 24), with a 1.458 OPS, 5 doubles, 2 homeruns, 8 RBI, and 7 runs scored. He had 3 hits, including 2 doubles, 1 RBI, and 2 runs scored in a 7-6 win over Kansas City. He hit a solo homerun in an 11-3 loss to the Royals. He had 3 hits, including a homerun, 3 RBI, and 2 runs scored in a 14-3 rout over Charlotte. He had 3 hits, including a double, 1 RBI, and 1 run scored in a 9-2 win over the Panthers. Finally, Cuestas had 2 doubles, 2 RBI, and a run scored in an 8-7 win against Charlotte. Injury News: The only notable injury during the week belonged to Green Bay's veteran right-fielder Lamont Ferro(.778 OPS, 4 HR). The 36 year old suffered a broken wrist and is expected to miss the remainder of the season. The Packers were off to a respectable start, but their lineup can ill afford the loss of a capable hitter like Ferro. Next: The league standings and Denver's batting and pitching statistics through one month of play.

San Diego is clearly the best team in the West, but both Los Angeles and San Jose are off to solid starts. I did expect Portland to be slightly better than it has been the last few seasons, but that has not been the case. NL Northeast- This division should be fun to watch as the season progresses. With only a few games separating the first place team from the last place team, it's anyone's guess as to how it plays out. That being said, Harrisburg is playing over its head right now, as evidenced by the Capitals' Pythagorean record, and I really don't expect Pittsburgh to stay in the race for very long. The Pirates' lineup has been woefully bad, with something like 3 or 4 regulars hitting at or below .200 so far. AL Southeast- This division has been surprisingly interesting so far, largely because the usually dominant Miami Dolphins have scuffled a little bit. With three quality teams jockeying for position, it should definitely be one of the most intriguing playoff races. AL Central- It didn't take long for this division to settle into its usual appearance. The current standings match the final standings from last season, and that order has been pretty common the last few years. Denver has finished in first place for 5 straight seasons, with Tucson in 2nd place in all of those years. Memphis, meanwhile, has finished in 3rd for 4 of the last 5 years. Green Bay, Grand Rapids, and Kansas City have mostly rotated between 4th, 5th, and 6th, although the Tigers did manage a 3rd place finish in 2083.

Esqueda 8 26 9 3 0 2 3 4 3 0 .346 .414 .692 0 0 Thoughts: On the plus side, Arthur Stice has been everything the Broncos could have hoped for, and then some. Russell Thomas and Alexis Vazquez have been superb, and although Lee Chappel's HR and RBI totals are somewhat low, he is still one of the best pure hitters in the game. Marvin Lore has done a good job proving that last year wasn't a fluke. Jose Fuensanta, Robert Shults, Adrian Mingo, and Gabriel Esqueda have all been solid bench players. On the negative side, Ellis Bolling has devolved into an all or nothing hitter. When he gets a hit, it's usually a big one(16 of 23 have gone for extra bases), but overall, the hits have been few and far between. Throw in a rapidly declining plate discipline, and a guy who was once one of the most feared hitters in the league is now little more than a mediocre complementary player. Michael Phillips has excellent plate discipline, but isn't offering much of anything else offensively. The biggest disappointment, though, has to be Brooks Branco. It was thought at the beginning of the season that Branco might platoon with Phillips, but his pitiful start is making it hard to put him in the lineup. Denver's pitching stats: Code:

George Buentello was also doing a good job, but he is lost for the season with injury. Thomas Fons has looked pretty awful, giving up plenty of hits, walks, and runs, while rarely, if ever, striking anyone out. Walter Ortiz's first start in place of Buentello was excellent, but it was just one start. Let's see how he looks in a month or two. Cornelius Saari has been an excellent addition to the bullpen, while Robert Soto and Lyndon Gwinn have done a fine job as well. Lamont Ruvalcaba has racked up some saves, but he has been less than impressive, to say the least. Instead of putting out fires right away, he has been more inclined to throw some gasoline at them first. Alex Haider and Larry Waltz have been almost identically inept as mop-up men.

League Standings as of June 1, 2086
I've decided to change the format for the time being. Instead of reporting after every week, I'll do it after each month. The last report came during the first week of May; it is now June 1st.

NL Northeast- Although this division is still the tightest of the four, it is not nearly as compressed as it was a month ago. New Jersey and Buffalo have begun to pull away from the pack. AL Southeast- Atlanta has tenaciously held onto first place, but expect this to be a dogfight between the Braves, Dolphins, and 79ers the rest of the way. AL Central- Little has changed in this division. Denver maintains a comfortable, if not secure, lead over Tucson, while the Diamondbacks hold a similar advantage over third place Memphis. League News: The National League Batter of the Month Award went to Hartford's third-baseman, Louis Guerriero. It was Guerriero's 4th career BOTM award. During the month of May, Guerriero hit .391/.451/.709, with a 1.160 OPS, 15 doubles, 1 triple, 6 homeruns, 31 RBI, and 22 runs scored. The National League Pitcher of the Month Award went to San Diego's Carlos Lozoya. This was the 7th time that Lozoya won the POTM award. In 6 May starts, Lozoya was 5-0, with a 1.54 ERA, a 0.95 WHIP, and had 40 strikeouts against 8 walks in 41 innings pitched. The American League Batter of the Month Award went to Miami's left-fielder, Albert Chichester. It was the first BOTM award of Chichester's career. The Dolphins' outfielder hit .381/.432/.646, with a 1.078 OPS, 4 doubles, 1 triple, 8 homeruns, 27 RBI, and 21 runs scored during the month of May. The American League Pitcher of the Month Award went to Washington's Kenneth Thurman. It was the first career POTM award for the 35 year old Thurman. During the month of May, Thurman made 6 starts, and had a 5-1 record, a 2.66 ERA, a 0.95 WHIP, and 51 strikeouts versus just 4 walks in 47 1/3 innings pitched. He also tossed three complete games, including two shutouts. The two shutouts have come in his last two starts(a 7-hit, 12-K, 0-BB performance against Kansas City, and a 2-hit, 11-K, 0-BB performance against Green Bay). Next: The league batting and pitching statistics, as well as Denver's batting and pitching statistics through the end of May.

Esqueda 15 57 16 4 1 2 3 8 5 1 .281 .339 .491 0 0 Thoughts: There is very little to complain about right now with regards to the Broncos' lineup. Lee Chappel, Russell Thomas, Alexis Vazquez, Arthur Stice, and Marvin Lore are all having superb seasons, while Masahachirou Shunji and Booker Romero have also put up excellent numbers(the latter, however, is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, and is not expected back for another 3 weeks). In addition, Gabriel Equeda has put up very good numbers coming off the bench. The worst regulars have been Ellis Bolling and Michael Phillips, although both of them still manage to contribute at times- Bolling in the power department and Phillips in the on base category. Jose Fuensanta and Robert Shults have been acceptable reserves this season, but the same cannot be said for Adrian Mingo and Brooks Branco. The performance of Mingo has been on par with Phillips, while Branco has been a complete disaster at the plate. This is especially problematic with Romero on the disabled list because Mingo and Branco are the guys filling in for him. Denver's Pitching Stats: Code:

Second year starter Thomas Fons continues to struggle, while Walter Ortiz has performed admirably so far in place of the injured George Buentello. Cornelius Saari, Robert Soto, and Lyndon Gwinn have been very reliable out of the bullpen for the first two months of the season. What is amazing is that closer Lamont Ruvalcaba only has 1 blown save thus far despite being fairly ineffective.

The two teams have traded sole possession of first place back and forth a couple of times, but are currently tied. For now, it looks like it will be just a 2-team race in the West, as Los Angeles is a distant third. NL Northeast- This division has seen significant upheaval lately. For example, in the last week or so, Buffalo has gone from second to fifth back to second down to third. In the last month, even Pittsburgh and Harrisburg have spent brief periods as high as second place. Through it all, New Jersey has remained on top, though the Devils have been unable to pull away from the pack. The Northeast will certainly be the most interesting division to watch in the second half of the season. AL Southeast- For much of the past month, Miami and Atlanta contested fiercely over first place, neither being able to hold onto it securely. The Dolphins currently have the upper hand, but the Braves don't seem likely to back down any time soon. Third place Knoxville remains in the mix, courtesy of a 7-game winning streak. AL Central- It's deja vu all over again. In the last few years, the Central Division has seemingly followed the exact same pattern: Denver runs away with first place, Tucson runs away with second place, Memphis hovers around respectability, and everyone else brings up the rear. A month ago, only 10 games separated the first place team(Denver) from the fourth place team(Green Bay). Now, there is nearly a 10 game gap between the first place Broncos and the second place Diamondbacks. Monthly Awards: The National League Batter of the Month Award went to Los Angeles' shortstop, Jose Valle. It's the first time that the 25 year old Valle has won a BOTM award. Valle hit .385/.443/.760 in the month of June, with a 1.204 OPS, 7 doubles, 4 triples, 7 homeruns, 22 RBI, and 21 runs scored. The National League Pitcher of the Month Award went to Portland's Christopher Kirk. This is Kirk's 3rd career POTM award. During the month of June, Kirk was 5-0 in 5 starts, with a 0.89 ERA, a 0.77 WHIP, and 27 strikeouts against 6 walks in 40 1/3 innings pitched. He also tossed one complete game. Kirk currently leads all of baseball with a 1.71 ERA. The American League Batter of the Month Award went to Nashville's catcher, Daniel Lane. It is Lane's first career BOTM award. Lane hit .396/.469/.813 in June, with a 1.282 OPS, 5 doubles, 1 triple, 11 homeruns, 30 RBI, 22 runs scored, and 15 walks. The American League Pitcher of the Month Award went to Denver's Robert McNett. This is the second time that McNett has won a POTM award. McNett made 6 starts in the month of June, and compiled a 6-0 record, a 1.07 ERA, a 0.86 WHIP, and 25 strikeouts against 8 walks in 42 innings pitched. McNett leads the American League with 13 wins and ranks second with a 2.85 ERA. Next: Denver's batting and pitching statistics as of July 1st, 2086.

Churchill 11 37 9 2 0 1 5 4 1 10 .243 .263 .378 0 0 Thoughts: The starting lineup has been outstanding, for the most part. The only weak links have been Ellis Bolling, who still manages to get a few extra base hits, and Michael Phillips, whose only plus ability these days seems to be drawing walks. The injury to Booker Romero gave increased playing time to Brooks Branco, Adrian Mingo, and Dale Churchill, who took Romero's roster spot while he was on the DL. Branco's batting average is still pretty poor, but his power has come around and he's drawn enough walks to produce a more than acceptable on base percentage. Mingo has had a fairly similar season to Phillips, only with a much better OBP. Churchill had a few good games while he was up, but overall wasn't anything special. Backup catcher Gabriel Esqueda has seen his numbers tail off. Denver's pitching stats: Code:

Second year man Thomas Fons has shown only marginal improvement from last season. The bullpen has been mostly adequate, although Larry Waltz and Alex Haider have both been pretty pitiful in mop-up roles.

Last year, Portland was the only NL team to not have any All Stars. This year, it is Harrisburg that suffers from that dubious distinction. After Portland, the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres are next, with 3 All Stars. The remaining National League teams all have 2 All Stars, with the exception of Buffalo, which has just one. There are 10 first time All Stars on the NL squad. Despite being one of the youngest members of the All Star team, this is already center-fielder Gaby Matos' 4th trip to the mid-summer classic, which is more than all but two other NL position players. San Jose's James Turner continued what seems to be a Sharks' tradition, as he became the fourth member of San Jose's bullpen to be named to an All Star team. Bill Frisch('80), Clinton Blanton('82 and '85), and George Parker('84) are the other three. Current Denver reliever Cornelius Saari was also an All Star for the Sharks in 2079.

The Denver Broncos own the best record in baseball, and they also pace both leagues with a whopping 8 All Stars. Knoxville has 5 All Stars, while Miami and Washington each have 3. Atlanta and Tucson both have 2, while Memphis and Grand Rapids managed 1 apiece. Nashville, Charlotte, Green Bay, and Kansas City failed to produce any All Star representatives this year. This is the third straight year that Green Bay has been without an All Star, the longest current drought of any team in baseball. There are 7 first-time All Stars on the AL team. Denver's Lee Chappel recently hit his 400th career homerun. After making only 1 All Star appearance from his rookie season of 2073 to 2081, Alexis Vazquez has made 5 consecutive trips to the mid-summer classic. Miami's Edmond McGurk leads the AL in homeruns; if he keeps up that pace through the end of the year, he will become the first player to lead the AL in homeruns in three straight seasons since Hall of Fame first-baseman Dave Gutierrez did it for Memphis from 2065 to 2067. Left-fielder Albert Chichester is finally having the breakout year that he's been expected to have. He's already broken his previous career high in homeruns(15). Flavio Trujillo's first full season came in 2073; from then to 2084, he made zero All Star appearances. He has now made 2 straight. This is Eric Phillips' second trip to the All Star game, but his first trip was back in 2078, when he was a rookie. Grand Rapids' Kenny Perry, Jr. is the youngest member of either All Star team. Perry's father made his only All Star appearance six years ago, in 2080, as a member of the Green Bay Packers.

The 2086 All Star Game

On a mild evening in Charlotte, the National League drubbed the American League, 9-3. San Diego center-fielder Gaby Matos was named the MVP of the game, as he doubled, homered, drove in a run, and scored 2 runs. Matos got the scoring started with a solo homerun in the top of the second inning. Atlanta's Flavio Trujillo evened the score in the bottom half of the second with an RBI double. In the third inning, Hartford's Louis Guerriero doubled in a run to put the NL back on top. In the fourth, another Padre, left-fielder Gregorio Ruiz, added to that lead with a run-scoring double of his own. New Jersey's Amaury Lucia(last year's All Star MVP) added a 2-run single to give the National League a 5-1 lead. It remained a 5-1 game until the seventh inning, when New Jersey's Herbert Baldridge delivered a pinch hit, 2-run homerun. The National League kept piling up the runs as Pittsburgh's James Sequeira singled in a run in the eighth inning and later scored when Washington third-baseman Mike Sanders mishandled a ground ball by Phoenix's Marcos Esparza. Sanders atoned somewhat for his error by ripping a 2-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning. Unfortunately, that was far too little, far too late for the American League. San Diego's Carlos Lozoya was named the winning pitcher. He pitched 3 innings, surrendered 2 hits, 1 run, and 1 walk, and collected 2 strikeouts. San Jose's Juan Echeveste also looked pretty good, as he struck out 4 batters in 2 innings. Miami's Christian Hokusai took the loss, with 3 hits, 2 runs, a walk, and 2 strikeouts in 3 innings pitched. Here is how Denver's representatives fared: Russell Thomas had 2 hits, both singles, in 5 at bats. Lee Chappel was 0 for 3 with a strikeout. Arthur Stice was 1 for 2, with a double, a walk, and a run scored. Alexis Vazquez was 1 for 1, with a walk, and a run scored. Robert McNett pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings with 1 hit allowed. Kenny Pillsbury pitched 1 scoreless inning and struck out 2 batters. Robert Soto surrendered 2 hits and 2 runs in 1 inning, and struck out 1 batter. Ray Lockridge pitched a scoreless 1/3 of an inning.

NL Northeast- New Jersey and Hartford have maintained their respective positions this past month, but the remaining teams, which were all still in contention at the All Star break, have begun to fall behind. Pittsburgh and Buffalo still have a shot at the playoffs, but they will have to start playing a lot better. AL Southeast- Atlanta played extremely well in the first half of the season, but July saw Miami and Knoxville reassert control over the division. The Braves will have to fight hard if they want to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2069. AL Central- At the All Star break, it looked like Denver was on the verge of completely running away with the division. But right before the break, the Broncos suffered a pair of tough losses to Grand Rapids, and that appeared to affect them quite a bit coming out of the break. Denver was flattened in a 3-game sweep at the hands of Miami, getting outscored 15-1, and had its losing streak stretch to 8 games with three straight losses to Atlanta. The Broncos were outscored 25-10 in those games. They salvaged the final game of that series, and generally played better the rest of the month, although they did lose 2 of 3 to Green Bay. Luckily for Denver, second place Tucson didn't really take advantage of that slump. All that means, however, is that the Broncos lead over the Diamondbacks remained comfortable. But with two months left, 8 1/2 games is by no means a secure lead. Third place Memphis has kept pace with Tucson, which means the Grizzlies are still in contention, but will have a lot of work to do to make up that ground. Green Bay was 10 games under .500 at the start of July, but the Packers have since shaved that number to 5 games. Green Bay hasn't finished .500 or better since 2072. League News: The National League Batter of the Month Award went to Hartford's third-baseman, Louis Guerriero. It's the 5th time that Guerriero has won a BOTM award, and the second time this season; he also won the award for the month of May. Guerriero hit .402/.447/.777 in July, with a 1.224 OPS, 19 doubles, 1 triple, 7 homeruns, 39 RBI, and 27 runs scored. Guerriero leads the National League in batting average(.366), slugging percentage(.702), OPS(1.115), hits(157), doubles(56), RBI(122), and runs scored(88). The National League Pitcher of the Month Award went to New Jersey's Kenneth Chancey. It's the first time that Chancey has won a POTM award. In 7 July starts, Chancey went 5-0, with a 1.73 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP, and 34 strikeouts against 22 walks in 52 innings pitched. Chancey currently leads the National League with a 2.45 ERA. The American League Batter of the Month Award went to Memphis' center-fielder, Jason Schwing. It is Schwing's first career BOTM award. The Memphis outfielder hit .402/.431/.728 during the month of July, with a 1.160 OPS, 16 doubles, 1 triple, 4 homeruns, 23 RBI, and 18 runs scored. The American League Pitcher of the Month Award went to Atlanta's Thomas Sanchez. This is Sanchez's first ever POTM award. He made 6 starts in July and posted a 5-1 record, with a 1.85 ERA, a 1.23 WHIP, and 37 strikeouts against 21 walks in 48 2/3 innings pitched. He also tossed 1 complete game. Trading News: The trading deadline came and went with a few trades of interest, but no big name players changed teams. Green Bay and Atlanta got things started at the beginning of July, when the Packers sent first-baseman Peter Peed(.272/.310/.469/.779, 19 2B, 19 HR, 60 RBI, 52 R) to the Braves in exchange for center-fielder Elmer Claflin(.268/.348/.474/.822, 25 2B, 11 HR, 42 RBI, 55 R, 25/25 SB) and 21 year old minor league reliever Alfredo Abalo(A-ball: 42 G, 2.28 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 58/9 K/BB, 67 IP). Atlanta remained aggressive on the trade-front. Just a few days after the trade with Green Bay, the Braves acquired second-baseman Nicholas Keough(.357/.408/.579/.987, 37 2B, 15 HR, 80 RBI, 65 R) from Portland in exchange for first-baseman Bill Wilkinson(.298/.399/.530/.929, 21 2B, 15 HR, 67 RBI, 52 R), and 24 year old minor league catcher Marcelo Barahona(A-ball: .399/.435/.514/.950, 25 2B, 5 HR, 46 RBI, 46 R; AA-ball: .341/.383/.409/.792, 3 2B, 44 AB). The remainder of the month saw a few more trades, but until the deadline itself, none involved contending teams. On the second to last day of the month, Tucson picked up veteran shortstop Alberto Alemany(.303/.377/.479/.855, 33 2B, 0 HR, 20 RBI, 38 R, 15/25 SB) from Green Bay for 18 year old minor league reliever Jose Avila(A-ball: 41 G, 3.45 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 35/9 K/BB, 28 2/3 IP) and 21 year old first-baseman Joel Vera(AA-ball: .197/.236/.284/.520, 16 2B, 5 HR, 31 RBI, 24 R). On the same day, Buffalo made a pair of trades, although both were somewhat surprising for a team in contention. First, the Bills acquired closer Brent Douglas(30 G, 0-1, 21 SV, 2.86 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 40/14 K/BB, 34 2/3 IP) from Green Bay in exchange for veteran starting pitcher Christopher Cooper(10-5, 3.40 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 123/20 K/BB, 153 2/3, 1 CG). Certainly, Douglas is a good reliever, but trading a front-line starter seems to make no sense at all. Of course, the trade doesn't make that much sense from Green Bay's perspective, either. An expensive, aging, free agent-to-be pitcher doesn't seem like the kind of return that a mediocre team would be looking for. Still, with the Packers hovering around .500, maybe Cooper can help them make a run. The second trade that Buffalo made had the Bills sending veteran shortstop Harvey Clark(.246/.278/.362/.640, 6 2B, 0 HR, 5 RBI, 7 R, 69 AB) to Rochester for 21 year old minor league catcher Shawn Moyes(A-ball: .312/.365/.435/.799, 24 2B, 6 HR, 48 RBI, 48 R). Clark has struggled as a backup this season, but he would still seem to have more value to a contending team than a last place team. The somewhat bizarre trades continued on the final day of July when Atlanta acquired 3 youngsters from Portland- 23 year old starter Steven Beal(3-5, 5.03 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, 50/45 K/BB, 87 2/3 IP), 19 year old minor leage first-baseman Everette Gonshiro(AA-ball: .250/.297/.317/.614, 16 2B, 4 HR, 32 RBI, 42 R), and 21 year old left-fielder James Bailey(A-ball: .275/.343/.349/.692, 18 2B, 3 HR, 25 RBI, 43 R)- in exchange for veteran second-baseman John McQuillen(.239/.352/.399/.750, 12 2B, 11 HR, 37 RBI, 53 R). Los Angeles acquired the suddenly well-traveled 22 year old rookie second-baseman Jason Green(.294/.328/.417/.745, 16 2B, 6 HR, 42 RBI, 41 R) from Kansas City in exchange for reliever Mark McAnulty(50 G, 4-3, 1 SV, 5.13 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, 24/22 K/BB, 59 2/3 IP) and 22 year old minor league reliever Gerald Dumont(A-ball: 31 G, 0.49 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, 37/4 K/BB, 36 2/3 IP; AA-ball: 13 G, 1.59, 0.71 WHIP, 13/2 K/BB, 11 1/3 IP); Green had been acquired by Kansas City from Green Bay in late June. Pittsburgh, finding itself unexpectedly in a playoff race this season, made a couple of moves that may or may not help. The Pirates picked up veteran starter Edward Carbonell(7-11, 6.52 ERA, 1.87 WHIP, 83/74 K/BB, 143 2/3 IP, 5 CG) from Grand Rapids for some minor league flotsam: 34 year old starting pitcher Tony DeFrancisco(AAA-ball: 4.19 ERA, 18 GS; career: 30 G, 27 GS, 7.53 ERA), 28 year old third-baseman Edward Pena(AAA-ball: .325/.403/.464/.867, 34 2B, 6 HR, 39 RBI, 51 R; career: .294/.331/.438/.769, 19 2B, 6 HR, 47 RBI, 41 R(272 AB)), 34 year old reliever Andrew Murphy(AAA-ball: 26 G, 6.33 ERA; career: 71 G, 3.60 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 37/22 K/BB, 70 IP), and 33 year old catcher Ahmed Fiore(AAA-ball: .542 OPS(30 AB); career: .523 OPS, 144 AB). The 38 year old Carbonell might improve his numbers slightly with a return to the National League, where he has spent virtually his entire career. The Pirates also acquired second-baseman Ciro Joubert(.330/.366/.520/.886, 13 2B, 10 HR, 31 RBI, 35 R) from Charlotte in exchange for starting pitcher Marcus Ybanez(8-8, 5.31 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, 81/61 K/BB, 142 1/3 IP, 2 CG, 2 SH), 29 year old minor league shortstop Michael Robinson(AAA-ball: .301/.350/.544/.894, 40 2B, 17 HR, 70 RBI, 46 R; MLB: 2 for 14; career: .233/.283/.382/.665, 65 2B, 22 HR, 133 RBI, 108 R), and 25 year old minor league third-baseman Federico Suarez(AA-ball: .261/.375/.490/.865, 16 2B, 20 HR, 53 RBI, 54 R). The 35 year old Joubert has put up some of the best numbers of his career this season. Finally, the defending champion New Jersey Devils made a move to bolster their struggling bullpen. The Devils traded for veteran reliever Jonathan Troutman(41 G, 4-3, 3.78 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, 37/24 K/BB, 52 1/3 IP), sending catcher Cefe Perez(.293/.321/.443/.763, 18 2B, 11 HR, 61 RBI, 45 R), rookie reliever Jacob Vitagliano(39 G, 2-2, 2 SV, 6.15 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 39/19 K/BB, 52 2/3 IP), and 28 year old minor league reliever Justin Seth(AAA-ball: 63 G, 4.09 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, 72/28 K/BB, 88 IP) to Grand Rapids in return. Injury News: The month of July saw several significant injuries to contending teams. Tucson lost starting pitcher Brandon Schrupp(9-4, 4.19 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 78/50 K/BB, 135 1/3 IP, 3 CG) for about 6 weeks with a ruptured bicep tendon. He is expected to return to the rotation one week from now. Miami's left-handed reliever Joseph Carpenter(2-3, 3 SV, 2.88 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 38/7 K/BB, 40 2/3 IP) missed about two weeks with a hyper-extended elbow. Atlanta's catcher Bill Baker(.291/.369/.498/.867, 16 HR, 49 RBI, 59 R) was in and out of the lineup, first with a bruised heel, and then with a scratched cornea. He collected only 39 at bats during the month. Baker will come off of the disabled list in 2 days. Knoxville lost slugging left-fielder Joshua Kier(.232/.361/.519/.880, 24 2B, 20 HR, 58 RBI, 65 R, 60 BB) until September with a broken hand. Veteran Memphis third-baseman Eric Jameson(.292/.355/.453/.809, 8 2B, 7 HR, 34 RBI, 31 R) played just 2 games in July before injuring his ACL. He won't return to the lineup for another two weeks. The Grizzlies also lost 24 year old starting pitcher Russell Mangano(9-4, 3.71 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 94/20 K/BB, 143 IP, 5 CG) until mid-August with a strained triceps. Hartford's reliever Mitchell Larson(3-3, 1 SV, 4.04 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 36/10 K/BB, 49 IP) missed half of the month with a strained triceps. He will come off of the DL in 4 days. The Whalers will also be without the services of southpaw starter Benjamin Guertin(8-6, 3.96 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 104/52 K/BB, 150 IP, 4 CG) for the next month, as he suffered a pulled triceps on the final day of the month. Although he wasn't playing for a contender, Grand Rapids' shortstop Anthony Champ still deserves mention. The 2085 All Star wasn't having a very good season(.261/.311/.351/.662, 9 2B, 7 HR, 61 RBI, 42 R), and it got a whole lot worse this past month. Champ ruptured his Achilles' tendon, an injury that has put his career in jeopardy. Next: League Batting and Pitching statistics as of August 1st, and Denver's batting and pitching statistics.

Thoughts: Offense is down slightly in both leagues this season. The NL OPS is down 8 points from last year's .779, while the AL OPS is down 5 points from last year's .812 total. One number above that stands out is Harrisburg's woefully bad HR total. The Capitals could become the first team since the 2041 Sacramento Kings to fail to reach at least 100 team homeruns. Those Kings hit only 97, however, they still managed to win 93 games and were one of 5 teams to top 900 runs scored that season. The record for fewest homeruns was achieved by the San Jose Sharks in their expansion year of 2038, with just 78 homeruns. The only other teams that failed to reach 100 were the '38 expansion Miami Dolphins, with 96, and both the 2012 and 2013 Knoxville 79ers' teams, with 97 and 95, respectively. Thoughts: Just as offensive numbers are down, pitching numbers are significantly better than last season. The NL ERA has improved by 0.11, from last year's 4.96 figure, while the AL ERA has improved by 0.16, from last year's 5.41 total. Charlotte's team ERA is the number that jumps out the most from the pitching stats. The Panthers would be the first team since the 2077 Phoenix Cardinals to have a team ERA over 7.00(Phoenix had an ERA of 7.25 that season).

It also wasn't a great month for San Jose, as the Sharks saw a 6 game division lead shrink to 3 1/2 games. Los Angeles, on the other hand, had an excellent month. If the Dodgers hang on to their current spot, it would be their first playoff appearance since 2076. If they should surpass San Jose, it would be their first West Division title since 2074. NL Northeast- This division has, for all intents and purposes, become a two team race between New Jersey and Hartford. Fortunately, the battle between the defending champion-Devils and the Whalers is the tightest of all of the playoff races, as only a 1/2 game separates the two teams. Assuming that Hartford doesn't completely collapse, it will be the Whalers first playoff appearance since 2077. If the Whalers emerge victorious in the division race, it will be their first division title since 2050, and only the third in franchise history. AL Southeast- There has been very little change in this division over the past month. At the start of August, Miami led Knoxville by 3 games, and Atlanta by 6 games. A month later, the Dolphins have gained only a 1/2 game on each of the other two teams. AL Central- Denver all but locked up its 6th consecutive division title after going 21-7 in the month of August. The Broncos turned an 8 1/2 game lead over Tucson on August 1st into a 16 game advantage on September 1st. Meanwhile, Tucson has pretty much secured the second playoff spot, which would mark the 6th straight season that the division has ended with Denver in first and Tucson in 2nd. It would be the 7th straight season that both the Diamondbacks and Broncos reached the postseason League News: The National League Batter of the Month Award went to Hartford's third-baseman, Louis Guerriero. This is Guerriero's 6th career BOTM award, and his third this season. The Whalers' third-baseman hit .422/.483/1.059/1.542 in the month of August, with 9 doubles, 1 triple, 18 homeruns, 38 RBI, and 32 runs scored. Guerriero has a very strong chance at winning the Triple Crown: he leads the NL in batting average by .023, in homeruns by 6, and in RBI by 45. He also leads the league in OPS, slugging percentage, hits, doubles, and runs scored. The National League Pitcher of the Month Award went to Sacramento's David Myers. It is the first ever POTM award for the 24 year old Myers. In the month of August, Myers made 5 starts, and posted a 5-0 record. In 42 innings pitched, he had a minuscule 0.86 ERA, a 0.57 WHIP, and 35 strikeouts against just 2 walks. He also fired 3 complete game shutouts: a 4-hit, 10-K outing against Phoenix, a 2-hit, 4-K, 1-BB win against Pittsburgh, and a 2-hit, 2-K performance against Phoenix. Myers also piled up 11 strikeouts in a win against Portland. The American League Batter of the Month Award went to Knoxville's second-baseman, Jack Forrester. It's Forrester's first ever BOTM award. In the month of August, Forrester hit .351/.419/.798/1.217, with 6 doubles, 12 homeruns, 26 RBI, and 28 runs scored. The 26 year old infielder is currently tied for the American League lead in homeruns, with 39. The American League Pitcher of the Month Award went to Denver's Kenny Pillsbury. This is the 4th time in his career that Pillsbury has won a POTM award. Pillsbury went 6-0 in 6 starts, with a 2.66 ERA, a 1.30 WHIP, and 32 strikeouts against 13 walks in 44 innings pitched. He also authored a 2-hit, 5-K, 3-BB shutout against Miami. Pillsbury currently leads the American League in wins, with 20. This is his 6th 20-win season, and 5th in a row. In other news, Los Angeles center-fielder Carlo Romero recently reached 500 career homeruns. The 34-year old outfielder has a career batting line of .299/.396/.532/.928, with 2610 career hits, 391 doubles, 75 triples, 500 homeruns, 1674 RBI, 1830 runs scored, and 1400 walks. Romero is a 7-time All Star, who has played for Phoenix, Grand Rapids, New Jersey, Nashville, and Los Angeles in his career.

![]() ![]() Memphis Grizzlies @ Denver Broncos With a chance to reduce their magic number for clinching the Central Division to 1, the Denver Broncos instead found themselves on the losing end of the league's first no-hitter in two years. Yes, the team that leads all of baseball in hits, doubles, homeruns, runs scored, batting average, and on base percentage failed to record even a single hit against Memphis' starting pitcher, Roy Kelemen. It was the 65th no-hitter in league history, and the 8th in Memphis' history, which is the most of any team. It is the 3rd time in Denver's history that the Broncos have been no-hit. From the very beginning, it was clear that there was something strange in the air. Grizzlies' left-fielder Terrell Carillo led off the game with his 26th homerun. Denver starter Ray Lockridge responded by plunking the next batter, first-baseman John Henriques. Not surprisingly, Henriques was more than a little perturbed by this, and chose to express his displeasure by introducing Lockridge to his fists. Naturally, the rest of the Broncos' and Grizzlies' players decided to throw in their two cents. Once the dust had settled and the various disagreements had been, for the most part, settled, the home plate umpire ejected both Henriques and Lockridge. Reliever Lyndon Gwinn took over the pitching duties for the Broncos, and kept Memphis off the scoreboard again until the fifth inning, when he served up Joseph Ishmael's 40th homerun of the season. That's all Memphis needed to hold off Denver. The Broncos, on the other hand, were getting base-runners. Kelemen may not have allowed any hits, but he had great difficulty in finding the strike-zone. His 7 walks were the most allowed by any pitcher in a no-hitter. Fortunately for Kelemen, the Grizzlies' defense bailed him out repeatedly, with double plays in each of the first four innings. For Kelemen, it was actually his second career no-hitter. Nearly 5 years ago to the day(September 22, 2081), he no-hit the Grand Rapids Tigers. This makes him the 7th pitcher to throw at least 2 no-hitters(the record is 3, held by Hall of Famer, Hector Soriano). Code:

They got some help from New Jersey, which swept a 3-game series from San Diego; all three wins were by one run(5-4, 4-3, and 6-5). NL Northeast- In the end, this division came down to a 3-game series between Hartford and New Jersey to close out the regular season. The Whalers entered the series with a 94-65 record and the host Devils came in with a 93-66 record. In the first game, Hartford rallied from a 3-2 deficit to win 7-3. The Devils pasted the Whalers, 7-0, in the second game. In the final game, New Jersey scored 6 runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but that wasn't enough to overcome a 7-0 Hartford lead. With the win, the Whalers clinched their first division title in 36 years. AL Southeast- Atlanta took 2 out 3 from Knoxville in the final week of the season to help secure its first postseason appearance since 2069. AL Central- Denver topped 100 wins for the 4th time in the last 5 seasons. Other than that, this division was fairly boring in the final month of the season. For the sixth straight season, Denver and Tucson finished 1-2 in the divisional race. The last time someone other than those two teams reached the postseason from the Central was in 2079, when Memphis won the division(Denver finished in 2nd that year). League News: The National League Batter of the Month Award went to Pittsburgh's first-baseman, James Sequeira. This is his first ever BOTM award. During the month of September, Sequeira hit .408/.437/.673/1.110, with 6 doubles, 1 triple, 6 homeruns, 25 RBI, and 21 runs scored. Sequeira ended the season with a .358 batting average, which ranked 3rd in the National League. The National League Pitcher of the Month Award went to Buffalo's Joseph Oliver. It was his second career POTM award. Oliver made 6 starts in September, and posted a 4-0 record, a 1.34 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and had 20 strikeouts against 18 walks in 40 1/3 innings pitched. The American League Batter of the Month Award went to Nashville's second-baseman, Lewis Lagunas. It's the first time that Lagunas has won a BOTM award. Lagunas hit .368/.421/.793/1.214 in September, with 11 doubles, 1 triple, 8 homeruns, 22 RBI, and 26 runs scored. The American League Pitcher of the Month Award went to Miami's Christian Hokusai. This is the 7th POTM award of Hokusai's career, and second this season(April). In 5 September starts, Hokusai went 3-2, with a 1.06 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP, and 26 strikeouts against 9 walks in 34 innings pitched. Hokusai's 2.34 ERA paced the American League this season. The past month also saw Sacramento's left-fielder Ramon Montalvo hit the 500th homerun of his career. The 34 year old slugger has a career batting line of .274/.382/.531/.913, with 2100 career hits, 311 doubles, 78 triples, 500 homeruns, 1516 RBI, 1491 runs scored, and 1327 walks. Despite the impressive career totals, Montalvo has only been named to 2 All Star games. He was the 2072 NL Rookie of the Year, and has also won 3 Gold Glove Awards. The biggest news of the season, however, relates to Hartford's third-baseman, Louis Guerriero, who became just the third player in league history to win the Triple Crown. Guerriero topped the National League in batting average(.380), homeruns(47), and RBI(176). The other two Triple Crown winners were Pittsburgh's John Rockwood in 2041(.388 AVG, 69 HR, 176 RBI) and Hartford's Ronald Ralston in 2045(.378 AVG, 57 HR, 144 RBI). In addition to leading the league in the Triple Crown categories, Guerriero also led the NL in OPS(1.183), slugging percentage(.755), hits(234), doubles(78), and runs scored(132). The doubles broke the NL single season record of 68, which Guerriero had tied just last year. He's pretty much a shoe-in for the Silver Slugger Award. Next: The final league batting and pitching statistics.
