Football has historically, predominantly been a European game; the world cup semi finalists have been European + Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay in the early tournaments - plus Chile in 1962, USA in 1930 and South Korea in 2002. Only 6 non-European teams have ever made the semi finals - compared to 18 Europeans, if I counted right. Check out the European qualifying groups, it's not like half the teams in Europe get in.
