NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE PATRIOTS LOSE GLENN BUT BEAT TEXANS The New England Patriots beat Houston 27-14 in the Monday Night Football game but the victory proved costly as the Pats lost running back Mario Glenn in the process. Glenn suffered a groin injury on the first series of the game and could miss three weeks. He leads the team with 578 yards rushing. Backup running back Bob *Jenkins did well in relief of Glenn gaining 97 yards on 24 carries. The Pats took a quick 7-0 lead when Houston return man Gus Barton fumbled the opening kick-off. It was scooped up by Pats special teamer Rocky Taylor and he ran 21 yards into the endzone. Houston tied the game midway through the first quarter when Tony Brady picked off a Bob Irvin pass and returned it for a major. Irvin redeemed himself on the next series, completing a 56 yard pass to rookie WR Fred Coleman which set up the go-ahead touchdown, a 3 yard toss to Dee Bolinger. Irvin would also throw a second half touchdown and complete 25-of-39 pass attempts for 268 yards. The Texans mounted little pressure in the second half. Veteran Cameron Belli was the overtime hero for the Hawks, scoring 5 of theeir 10 overtime points including a key 3-pointer that put the game away. The 37 year old Belli is considered to be one of the game's greatest players. This is his first year with Milwaukee after 13 seasons in New Orleans. Center George *Mikan led Indianapolis with 26 points and 13 rebounds. The Olympians were outscored 10-6 in the overtime. Despite a triple double from guard Trevor Presgraves, Kentucky fell 97-88 in Baltimore. Presgraves had 23 points, 17 assists and 11 rebounds. Peter Warren again led the Bullets scoring parade with 25 points. The difference in the game was Kentucky made just 4 of 24 3-point attempts including Presgraves going just 1-for-9 while the Bullets hit on 9 of their 18 3-pointers. Warren led the way sinking 4 of 5. In the only other game Syracuse knocked off Philadelphia 106-89. Justin Hild led the Nationals with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Senior PF Idan Galon has a shot at being the schools all-time leader in points and rebounds by the time his career ends. 2- AMERICAN: The Eagles were 10-4 in conference play last year but lost in Patriot tournament semi-finals. Only one starter is gone from last season and a pair of Eagles made the preseason all-conference team including sophomore guard Nick Egolf who averaged 8.1 ppg and 7.4 apg as a freshman. 3- BOSTON UNIVERSITY: Won the conference tournament and the first ever NCAA tournament game in conference history. However, 3 starters have graduated and this may be a rebuilding year. The Terriers feel they have a great one in freshman PG Naquan Hawthorne. 4- COLGATE: The Raiders are coming off a 24 win season and a trip to the NIT quarterfinals but have graduated three starters. Senior PG Fred *Nagy is back. He averaged 18.7 ppg last season and is a legitimate candidate for League MVP. 5- LAFAYETTE: Coming off three straight 9-21 seasons but things look a little brighter for the Leopards this season as four starters, including pre-season all-conference selection Oliver Wilson, return. 6- BUCKNELL: Won just 12 games a year ago but did finish 8-6 in conference play, their best conference record in 4 years. However, with 4 starters graduated it is back to square one for the Bison. 7- MAINE: After winning their first Patriot League title the Black Bears slumped to 4-10 in conference and 8-22 overall last year. Loaded with freshmen and sophomores the Black Bears have only one player, senior forward Neil Felton, with any noticable playing experience at all. 8- LEHIGH: Just 2-12 in conference each of the past two seasons so there is not much in the way of positives to discuss when it comes to the Mountain Hawks. Senior guard Tristen Hargis averaged nearly 17 points per game last season but had little help. The amount of work that goes into this sort of thing is simply exceptional.
Though I haven't had the chance to read through the entire thing yet, the stories that evolve out of your comprehensive newspaper style format are extremely engrossing. |

COLLEGE FOOTBALL GEORGIA TECH AND CALIFORNIA CLIMBING THE POLLS Note- Due to an oversight the college rankings are being published one day late. Georgia Tech and California made the biggest jumps in this weeks national college football poll. The 4-0 Yellow Jackets hammered Auburn 40-0 to climb from #20 last week to the 14th spot. California beat Pacific Coast Conference rival Washington State 17-7 to improve to 5-0 on the season and move up 5 spots to #13. Utah and Missouri are the new entrants in the poll this week after UCLA and Arkansas dropped out. The Bruins lost 10-6 to Stanford while the Razorbacks were beaten 24-6 by #3 Texas. Speaking of Texas the Longhorns play yet another ranked school this week as they meet number 8 Rice. Two other games this weekend involving ranked teams have 7th rated USC visiting California while #17 Georgia entertains #18 Alabama. Code:

Warriors second year center John Layton got into foul trouble early and played just 11 minutes, scoring just 2 points and hauling in just 1 rebound. To defend Layton slightly, it was Mikan who had the far better supporting cast under the hoop. Indianapolis power forward Vernon Stout is one of the best rebounders in the game and he and *Mikan made life miserable for young Layton. Stout had 14 boards and 11 points. Indianapolis improves to 3-4 with the win while the Warriors drop to 3-5. Layton, a high priced free agent signing after a terrific playoff run for Dallas, has been very inconsistant through 8 games with Philadelphia. He had a 30 point, 11 rebound performance in his debut but was been held to 10 points or less in 3 of the next 7 games. He has looked dominant on some occassions but far less than ordinary on others. However, Philadelphia fans must keep in mind he is just 24 and has started less than 50 NBA regular season games in his career. The Warriors signed him to a 5 year deal knowing it might take 3 years for him to reach his full potential. In other action Ben Gosford had 16 points off the bench to lead the Providence Steamrollers past Boston 90-72. Veteran Celtics guard Phil Hernandez left the game with a hamstring injury and will likely miss two weeks. Vin Concepcion scored 29 points and added 10 rebounds to pace the visiting Chicago Stags to a 98-93 victory over the Minneapolis Lakers. The win improves the Stags record to 2-1 while Minneapolis falls to 1-4. Joe *Fulks led the Lakers with 25 points in the game. Kansas City got it's first win of the season by beating Cincinnati 91-74. The Kings are 1-2 while the Royals fall to 1-4. Forward Jim Cokley had 28 points for the Kings while the Royals were led by guard Thor Thorlaksson and forward Liles Wilder, who each had 21 points. San Francisco and Oregon have been the dominant teams in a conference that consistantly places 3 or 4 teams in the NCAA tournament. The Dons and Ducks have never missed an invite to the Big Dance and each have a National Championship to their credit. The greatest memory for the PCC North came in 1939 when Oregon and San Francisco both advanced to the national title game. Code:

The Ducks are the conference favourites this season thanks to 4 returning starters including preseason all-conference selections Dick *Triptow and Alex *Groza. 2- WASHINGTON: It has been hard times of late for Washington as the Huskies missed the postseason twice in the last 4 years after earning a tournament bid for the first 11 seasons of the league. Things look bright this year and with a few breaks the Huskies could challenge Oregon for the conference title. Both starting guards from last year's squad were first round NBA selections but the loss should not hurt the Huskies much as junior guards Johnny *Oldham and David *Johnson are ready to shine. 3- OREGON STATE: Beavers have made just 1 NCAA tourney appearance in past 6 years and won a school worst 10 games last year. However, last year's suffering may be rewarded this season as a trio of sensational sophomores have a full year's experience under their belt. Emmitt McLaughlin is one of the three and he was so impressive as a freshman that he has been named to the preseason all-conference team. 4- SAN FRANCISCO: The Dons have never missed an NCAA tournament and are coming off a 28-8 season with a trip to Sweet 16. However, conference MVP Jack *Toomay has graduated and there are 6 freshman on the roster with a good chance that two of them will be starters. This season an NIT bid seems more likely than another trip to the NCAA's. 5- LMU: The Lions only postseason appearance came in 1944 when they won 20 games for the first time in school history and received an at-large bid to the NCAA's. Were 16-14 last season and return 3 starters including sweet shooting senior guard Jose Driggers. 6- WASHINGTON STATE: The Cougars won 20 games last season but have lost 4 starters. With 2 freshman in the starting lineup this could be a long season. 7- ST MARY'S: The Gaels have never won the conference but after a 4-10 season made a surprising run to the conference tournament final last year. With a pair of talented sophomores in forward Don *Lofgren and guard Richard Bolaine along with freshman forward Eddie xKirkpatrick the future looks pretty good but they don't have the depth to do much this year. 8- PORTLAND: In 1942 the Pilots went 25-7 and won the only conference title in school history, since then they have not won more than 16 games in a year including 13-18 last season. They have some good balance this year but that is really just another way of saying no one on this roster stands out. In Boston the Bruins entertain Montreal while the other game has New York travelling to Toronto to take on the Maple Leafs. Schott's record drops to 14-12-1.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL LOHRMAN WINS AL CY YOUNG IN TIGHT RACE Cleveland pitcher Bill Lohrman was named the American League Cy Young Award winner by the narrowest of margins over Earl Johnson of the Boston Red Sox. Out of the 10 ballots cast Lohrman and Johnson each appeared first on five of the them. The difference would be that Lohrman was in the top 3 on all 10 ballots while Johnson was only named on 9 of the 10. Points were awarded for first, second and third place on a 5,3,1 basis. Code:

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE BRUINS WIN SECOND STRAIGHT Boston completely dominated Montreal in National Hockey League action. The final score of 4-2 was no where near representative of how much the Bruins carried the play. Only some stellar goaltending from Canadiens netminder Bill Durnan kept the score respectable as the Bruins outshot Montreal 31-15. Ed Sanford scored a pair of goals to pace the Bruins with Fern Flaman and Joe Carveth adding singles. Toe Blake and John Quilty replied for Montreal. Unlike the North, which has had 4 or 5 very strong schools, the PCC South has been dominated by UCLA as the Bruins have won 9 of the 15 conference titles and far and away lead the rest of the conference in NCAA tournament appearances. The University of Southern California has enjoyed some success in recent years including a trip to the national title game last season. Code:

However senior William *Towery, a preseason all-conference selection, and sophomores Chuck *Cooper and Joe *McNamee should keep the Trojans in the conference title hunt. 2- CALIFORNIA: Center Jack *Nichols could well be the best player in the nation and he will lead a veteran Golden Bears squad that should battle USC for the conference title and may be a force in the NCAA's. 3- UCLA: With Chet *McNabb and Bruce *Hale graduated this is a bit of a rebuilding season for the Bruins, who made the Sweet 16 last year. Senior guard Matt *Zunic and sophomore guard George *Starich will carry the team but a lack of quality big men may hurt come tournament time. 4- STANFORD: The Cardinal have plenty of experience returning and may overtake UCLA for third place in the conference if forwards Bill *Calhoun, Daniel Shivers and Richard Williams can make up for the loss of graduated center Jon Anderson. 5- GONZAGA: Senior forward Randy Davis is probably the best player in the conference not named to the all-preseason team. If everything goes right this could become the first Bulldogs team to win 20 games in a season. 6- PEPPERDINE: The Waves have never contended for a conference title but are coming off a 17 victory season last year. There is some decent talent at Pepperdine including sophomore guard Clark Smith but depth will be a problem. 7- SANTA CLARA: Sophomore guards Ryan Blanco and Chalmers Kallam give the Broncos some hope for the future but this will be another long season. 8- SAN DIEGO: Coming off back to back 6 win seasons and things do not look much better this year for the Toreros. The victory is Basilio's second straight as a professional and once again it was another strong outing from the man that many predict will one day contend for a world title. Basilio is 2-0-1 as a pro with his draw coming under questionable circumstances in his professional debut in August. The audience had booed heavily when the result was announced as it was clear Basilio had carried the fight to his opponent. There was no such questioning this time as all three scorecards rightly had Basilio beating Hart handily.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL CARDS WHITE DRAWS SECOND CY YOUNG AWARD St Louis hurler Ernie White was named the National League Cy Young Award winner for the second time in his career. White, who also won the award in 1945, was 21-8 with a 2.50 era in 40 starts for the Cardinals. He gathered 8 of the 10 first place votes with Vern Olsen of the Cubs and Pittsburgh's Cliff Melton each getting one vote. Code:

That gets me over .500 on the season at 16-12-1. Might as well press my luck and take a stab at every game again this week. Cowboys are coming off their first win and dare we say two in a row....Yes, the Giants are fading fast so I'll take the Cowboys. The Colts will get upset at home. An important game for the Browns and they will not dissappoint. The Raiders are inconsistant but they lost big last week so they should do the opposite this time, Oakland it is. I think Baltimore will win at home to Cincinnati but not by 8 points...I'll take the Bengals to cover. In the words of Marv Leavy were would you rather be than watching 1-7 Buffalo vs 2-6 Miami, well actually anywhere else would be preferable. Have to pick one of these two losers so lets go with the underdog Bills at home. The Redskins have been playing much better since Sammy *Baugh returned and I am going to gamble that the overconfident Eagles are ripe for an upset. Washington may not win but I have a hunch they could cover. Niners just a 1 point dog at awful Arizona. I am all over that pick. Broncos looked great at Cleveland last week but will have trouble in in Kansas City, take the Chiefs -6. Rams vs Seahawks. Two teams I have not followed too closelybut I'll take the boys from St Louis. Saints took a beating from Washington last week and will beat Tampa but the Bucs are a good team and will keep it close, so I am taking Tampa and the points. Falcons should cover against Carolina. Jets vs Pats should be a doozy. I think New England will prevail. Finally on Monday night I will give up 7 points and take the Titans. Code:

In the OPRFU the Toronto Indians travel to Ottawa to meet the Trojans, the Hamilton Wildcats entertain Toronto Balmy Beach while in southwestern Ontario Windsor travels to Sarnia to face the winless Imperials. In the West first place Edmonton is home to Winnipeg while Regina travels to Calgary to face the Stampeders. NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION HYBARGER'S 43 POINTS NOT ENOUGH FOR PISTONS Mo Hybarger had 43 points for Fort Wayne last night but the Pistons needed one more shot to from their veteran point guard to drop. Hybarger's desperation shot from just over midcourt as time expired hit the rim and bounced out allowing Cleveland to hang on for a 97-95 victory at the Fort Wayne Arena. Juan Harrison and Bob *Brannum each had a double-double for the winners. A strong fourth quarter allowed Providence to pull out a 92-89 victory in Philadelphia. The Steamrollers outscored the Warriors 29-18 in the final 12 minutes. Warriors guard Anthony Maggs led all scorers with 33 points while center John Layton had another rough game, scoring just 6 points in the loss. Layton's former team, the Dallas Chaparrals, completed a home-and-home sweep of Kentucky by beating the Colonels 79-66. Joe Cunningham and Jarvis Ferguson each had 19 for the Chaps. In other action: Despite a 28 point, 17 rebound effort from center George *Mikan, Indianapolis fell 96-89 to the Kings in Kansas City. Joe *Fulks had 19 points as Minneapolis handed Pittsburgh it's 4th straight loss, 102-79. Throughout the 15 year history of the league Kentucky and Florida have consistantly had strong teams while in the early years Tennessee and Georgia were also to be feared. The Vols and Bulldogs have had some lean years of late but Alabama has filled the void and become a national power, winning two National Titles in the past four years. Add in Kentucky's title last season and the SEC has won 3 of the past 4 NCAA tournaments and could make it four out of five years with the way Florida looks this season. Code:

Last season there was positive news like a 22-9 record and a run to the SEC tournament final before losing to national champion Kentucky, but the year ended on a sour note when the fourth seeded Gators were upset by Texas A&M in the opening round of the NCAA's. The NCAA tournament has been a source of heartache for Gator fans as they have made 4 trips to the elite 8, twice as the favourite, yet have never appeared in a national championship game. That could all change this season as the Gators are loaded with all of the starters back. The backcourt will again feature Tyson Edwards and SEC freshman of the year Shaun Fluellen. Upfront there is Bill *Closs and Bob *Hahn along with recruit Harry *Hamilton who may be the best freshman player in the nation. 2- ALABAMA: Always a solid program, the Tide have rolled to a pair of National titles in the past four seasons. Odie *Spears is gone after being selected first overall in the NBA draft but the Crimson Tide have the depth to recover. Senior forward Harry *Gallatin is a likely first round NBA selection and sophomore center Nate *Clifton is full of potential. 3- KENTUCKY: After a bit of a down period early in the decade the Wildcats are once again a powerhouse, making the last two national championship games and winning it all this past season. Any program would have a tough time replacing three players good enough to be drafted by the NBA like Paul *Noel, Jack *Rocker and Cliff *Baker were but the Wildcats have the depth to do it and remain competitive. This year will likely not result in a third straight trip to the national title game but the Wildcats are once again expecting an invite to the Big Dance. Freshman guard Dale *Barnstable may be the best newcomer in the conference. 4- AUBURN: The Tigers won 22 games last season and made the NCAA tournament for the first time in 3 years but have lost 4 starters from that club. Up front they are solid with seniors Ian McGee, Nathan Lange and Guy Mouyerne but the backcourt is very inexperienced. 5- MISSISSIPPI: The Rebels suffered through a 6-23 season a year ago after two straight trips to the NCAA's. With 3 returning starters plus senior guard Hector Guzman, who missed most of last season with an injury, they will be an improved team this year. 6- MISSISSIPPI STATE: Won the SEC title in 1941 and 1942 but have never won more than 12 games in a season since, last year they were 6-24. Three starters return but the Bulldogs lack the depth necessary to be much of a force in the conference. 7- VANDERBILT: Always a good but never a great team the Commodores were 14-16 last year while playing a very tough schedule. Senior forward Trevor Cadiz made the preseason all-conference team but there is not enough talent around him. Freshman guard Mack xAlford has potential. 8- GEORGIA: A dominant team in the late 1930's but this decade has been tough on Bulldog fans as poor recruiting sent them into a downward spiral to start the decade. With 17 wins each of the past two seasons thanks to the play of Mel *McGaha, an NBA first round pick this past June, things may be looking up. 9- LOUISIANA STATE: Tigers have made three straight NIT appearances but that trend will end this season. 10-TENNESSEE: An NCAA tournament regular in the 1930's, the Volunteers have played just one tournament game since 1939 and have had a huge drop-off in recruiting talent over that period. NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION CAVS WIN ANOTHER CLOSE ONE For the second night in a row the Cleveland Cavaliers barely escaped with a victory. New York Knicks forward Paul *Huston missed a 3-point attempt that would have tied the game with 3 seconds left to play as the Cavs beat the Knickerbockers 85-82. Despite battling a flu bug Cavs veteran forward Juan Harrison led the way for his club with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Braden Morrow also had a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards for the Cavs, who improve to 5-1 with the victory. The Cavs are two days into a grueling stretch where they play 5 games in as many nights. Elsewhere Boston got 18 points and 11 assists from Rob Rodriguez as the Celtics beat New Orleans 97-92. The Jazz not only lost the game but they also lost guard Daniel Gray with a sprained toe. The 6th year pro from Wake Forest was averaging 15.5 ppg and 9.5 apg this season. He could miss a little over a week with the injury. Visting Cincinnati topped Minneapolis 98-94 despite a 26 point, 11 rebound effort from Lakers forward Joe *Fulks. Providence steamrolled a tired Dallas squad 105-88. The defending champs were playing their third game in three nights. Gardner, the former World Champion, had the fight well under control or so it seemed until Kane opened a nasty cut above the challenger's left eye. With blood pouring out of the gash and Gardner clearly unable to see the referee stopped the fight. Afterwards, Gardner's camp claimed the cut had been caused by a head butt but most impartial observers disagreed. Kane improves to 19-2-1 and is looking for a fight with World Champion Speedy Akira of Japan. Gardner, who was World Champion from October of last year until losing to Jackie Paterson in June, drops to 18-4-1. I've got to pull for West Texas A&M as they're my hometown team. But TCU comes first for sure.

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : SUNDAY OCTOBER 26, 1947
COLLEGE FOOTBALL RICE BEATS TEXAS 20-10 The University of Texas had climbed to the number 3 ranking by playing and beating some tough highly ranked opponents but the Longhorns finally met their match when 8th ranked Rice beat them 20-10. Rice QB Virgil *Ekenberg threw one touchdown pass and ran for another but it was the Owls defense that proved the difference, in particular defensive end John *Magee who sacked Longhorns QB Bobby *Layne 3 times in the game. Another top 10 squad fell this weekend when #13 California edged the 7th ranked USC Trojans 24-23. Meanwhile 9th ranked Oklahoma was forced to settle for a 16-16 draw against Texas Christian. Lonnie Duncan chipped in with 19 for the winners. In the Northeast Division Cleveland is now 6-1 after topping second place Buffalo 100-84. Braden Morrow had 22 and Juan Harrison 21 to lead the Cavs who have won 5 straight. In the only other game Indianapolis went on a 24-1 run in the fourth quarter and hammered Chicago 114-78. TF,
I just wanted to bring to your attention that greydog studios is working on a college football game and from what I've read so far would work as far as at least starting from any calendar year. greydogstudios.com JTB |

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : MONDAY OCTOBER 27, 1947
NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE CARDINALS SURPRISE SAN FRANCISCO 14-7 The Arizona Cardinals created a real logjam atop the NFC West after they beat the San Francisco 49ers 14-7. The victory, just the second of the season for Arizona, drops the 49ers into a first place tie with St Louis at 5-3. The Seattle Seahawks, who lost 24-17 to the Rams yesterday, are just a game back. The Niners, who earlier had looked like they might run away with the division, suffered their second straight loss. The Cardinals defense and in particular all-pro safety Booker Hassellbeck was the difference in the game. Hassellbeck had 12 tackles, a pair of sacks and a key fourth quarter interception that set up the winning score. The 6 time all-pro selection is the NFL's all-time leader in tackles. In Seattle, the visiting Rams won their third straight game on the strength of 118 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns from running back Mike Largent. The win came at a cost however, as Rams QB Rod Dugas suffered a broken foot in the game and may miss up to two months. Veteran backup Kevin Schwantz completed 12-of-20 attempts in relief. Jets running back Steve *Van Buren may have single-handedly ended the New England Patriots playoff hopes. Van Buren ran for 154 yards and two touchdowns plus he caught 6 passes for 54 yards and a third touchdown in leading the Jets past the Patriots 24-14. At 6-3 New York now has a 3 game lead on the Pats and in all likliehood wrapped up the division title with this win. In the other game involving AFC East clubs, Ken Wilkins hit a 39 yard field goal in overtime to lift Buffalo past Miami 34-31. Both teams are now 2-7. Dallas won it's second game to improve to 2-6. The Cowboys beat the Giants 19-14 thanks to 4 Wesley Hodgins' field goals and 111 yards rushing from Raymond Cash. First overall pick George *Savitsky had a sack for the Cowboys to raise his season total to 3. Philadelphia improved to 7-1 with a 22-17 win over Washington. The Skins had a 14-6 lead until often-injured QB Sammy *Baugh was knocked out of the game. *Baugh has failed to start more than 10 games each of the past two seasons and has missed 3 already this year. He is expected to be back next week. A wild finish in New Orleans as the Saints and Tampa Bay combined for 30 fourth quarter points. In the end the hometown side prevailed 39-32 as Saints RB Todd Berger gained 207 yards rushing and scored 3 touchdowns. Rookie Otto *Graham threw 3 touchdown passes for the Bucs. Atlanta improved to 6-3 as yet another running back had a huge game. Falcons back Antowain Anderson gained 199 yards and scored two touchdowns as the birds beat 1-7 Carolina 35-26. Baltimore gained some breathing room atop the AFC North with a 35-21 win at home over second place Cincinnati. The usually defensive minded Ravens got a second straight 4-touchdown pass game from QB John Foster. The Bengals two quarterbacks combined for 5 interceptions. The Browns playoff hopes suffered a blow with a 19-7 loss at home to arch-rival Pittsburgh. Browns QB Louis Webster had a terrible game, getting picked off 3 times which led to 10 of the Steelers points. Ulish Groce threw for a pair of touchdowns and 286 yards as the Kansas City Chiefs beat Denver 34-20. Meanwhile, the Oakland Raiders remained 2 games back of the front running Chiefs in the AFC West with a 29-23 win over San Diego. In the only other game Houston and Indianapolis battled to a 24-24 overtime tie. Colts QB Eric Poppinga threw for 312 yards and three touchdowns but was also intercepted twice. Tonight the top two teams in the AFC South meet in Tennessee as the 6-1 Titans host 4-3 Jacksonville. It was another long night for Warriors fans as the club continues to struggle. Guard Anthony Maggs had a big game for the Warriors, scoring 24 points and chipping in on the boards with 7 rebounds but the big men remain inconsistant. John Layton had 11 points and just 6 rebounds playing against a center he dominated in the league finals with Dallas last year. In Dallas, forward Liles Wilder had 17 points and 11 rebounds to pace Cincinnati to a 76-70 victory over the Chaps. Habs scoring star Maurice 'Rocket' Richard suffered a leg injury and is expected to miss close to a month. He will be the second Canadiens forward sidelined for a length of time as winger Kenny Mosdell is out until mid-December after an offseason injury. Before he was hurt, Richard scored two goals and added an assist on the first of Elmer Lach's two markers. The Red Wings outshot Montreal 56-34 but Bill Durnan had another strong game between the pipes for the Canadiens. Ted Lindsay and Sid Abel each scored twice for the Wings. In the only othe game Boston topped the Chicago Black Hawks by a 3-1 score. Gaye Stewart put the Hawks ahead 21 seconds in to the game but that was the only puck to elude Bruins goaltender Frank Brimsek, who turned aside 18 shots. Three defensemen - Clare Martin, Jack Crawford and Pat Egan - scored for the Bruins. TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : TUESDAY OCTOBER 28, 1947
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WILLIAMS NAMED A.L. MVP To the surprise of absolutely no one Boston outfielder Ted Williams was named the American League Most Valuable Player. All Williams did was become just the third man in major league history to win the triple crown. Teddy Ballgame finished the season with a .347 batting average, .008 ahead of teammate Johnny Hudson. Williams' 38 homers were 15 more than anyone else in the American League and with 112 rbi's he had 4 more than Wally Judnich of the Browns. Only George Stone of the Boston Braves in 1913 and the Yankees Babe Ruth in 1926 have managed to lead their league in batting average, homers and rbi's in the same season prior to Williams. Ruth was the only one to lead all three categories outright as Stone tied for the rbi lead. Rogers Horsnby came very close in 1923, missing by 1 home run. For Williams it was his second straight Most Valuable Player award. He also won the American League rookie of the year award in 1939 and has made the all-star team each of his 9 seasons. Tomorrow the National League MVP award will be announced. It should be a tight race between Bob Elliott of Pittsburgh and Joe Medwick of the Cardinals. Code:

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE BLEDSOE LEADS JAGS TO UPSET WIN OVER TITANS Jacksonville quarterback Tommy Bledsoe enjoyed probably his finest day as a pro in leading the Jaguars to a 30-16 victory over the hometown Tennessee Titans in the Monday Night NFL game. Bledsoe completed 15 of 21 passes for 258 yards including a pair of 4th quarter touchdown strikes. After starting the year 0-3 the Jags have won 5 straight games and are the hottest team in the AFC. At 5-3 they move to within a game of the Titans in the race for first place in the AFC South. Bledsoe has been booed, benched and very inconsistant for most of his 5 years in Jacksonville, but the former Washington State signal caller seems to have finally found the secret to sucess in the NFL. Thanks to a terrible start this season, Bledsoe still has more interceptions (8) than touchdown passes (7) on the year but he has been very good the past 4 games. Having a developing tight end in Carroll Costa to go along with all-pro receiver Lewis Smith has made things much easier on the Jags offense this season. The Titans were forced to finish the game with Manfred Gayle under center after rookie Charles *Trippi left the game with a leg injury. *Trippi, a Heisman Trophy finalist at Georgia last season, has been enjoying a terrific rookie season but his status for next weeks game at Tennessee is doubtful. NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION STEAMROLLERS FLATTEN PHILADELPHIA Jim *Pollard had 32 points as the Providence Steamrollers won their 6th straight game, blowing out Philadelphia 112-83. The win improves the Steamrollers record to 8-1, best in the league. *Pollard, a second year guard who two NCAA titles at Alabama, is a big reason for the Steamrollers early success. He leads the club in scoring with 18.0 ppg and has been the team's emotional leader early in the season. *Pollard averaged 13.7 ppg his rookie season and made the all-rookie second team but he stepped his game up to the next level during the summer league when he averaged over 25 ppg and 8 assists per game. In Fort Wayne, Noah Baldin had 21 points and 10 boards to lead the Pistons past New York 100-73 spoiling a career game from Knicks backup forward Caston Cook who had 20 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. In the only other game Milwaukee hung on to nip Kentucky 81-78. The regularly send an at-large entry or two to the NCAA's and more often than not a school from the Skyline 8 is still playing in the Sweet 16. Utah won the conference's only national title with a victory in the 1938 National Invitational Tournament. Wyoming and Utah were the dominant schools in the 1930's but in recent years the Utes have faded a little. Colorado State is the fastest rising school. After a decade of mediocrity the Rams have made four straight NCAA tournament appearances and won the last two conference titles. Fresno State also always has a competitive team. Code:

The Cowboys have gone 5 years without a conference title, the longest such drought in school history. 2- UTAH: Ended a 4 year postseason drought last season with a 20-10 year and an NIT bid. Prior to the slump the Utes had made 11 straight trips to either the NCAA's or NIT. Nick Williams is a tremendous scorer and rebounder plus the addition of highly touted freshman Adam Collura should help. The Runnin' Utes have the talent to stay with Wyoming. 3- NEW MEXICO: After two straight 20 plus win seasons New Mexico sunk to 8-21 a year ago. With more experience this promises to be a much better season. Most of the offense will revolve around last season's Skyline freshman of the year Don *Stroot. The 6'8" center averaged 12.3 ppg and 8.7 rpg a year ago and should be even better this time around. 4- COLORADO STATE: Accomplished very little in the first decade of the league but have had four straight 20 win seasons and won the last two conference tournaments. Three starters return to defend their title including all-conference selection Nick Horst. 5- FRESNO STATE: The Bulldogs have never missed the postseason and have a streak of seven straight 20-victory seasons. There are some real questions about the backcourt this season but up front the Bulldogs are set with 6'7" senior Morgan Kinkead, 6'10" sophomore Ron Billebault and an impressive freshman from Woodbine, Iowa named Charles Buchanan. Only poor grades kept Buchanan out of a Big Ten school. 6- UTAH STATE: Won their only conference title in 1944 and it was the first and only season the Aggies had a winning record. Last year they finished 11-18 and while they have a shot at a .500 record this season they certainly will not be a contender for the conference title. 7- BRIGHAM YOUNG: The Cougars are coming off a dismal 9 win season. The good news is there is no one back from the starting five on that team except for sophomore center Anthony Pelletier. The bad news the lack of experience will make this another long season for BYU. Junior college transfers Roland *Minson and Dalon Kimball were brought in to try and stop the bleeding. 8- DENVER: Likely a fifth straight losing season for a school that has done very little in the last 15 years. Senior guard Neil Brown is a solid player but he will not get much help. SKYLINE PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM G Thomas Huitt New Mexico G Marko *Tordovich Wyoming F Nick Williams Utah F Tim Frei Wyoming C Nick Horst Colorado State NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE FULL SLATE OF GAMES TONIGHT For this first time this season all six National Hockey League teams are in action. You can always count on excitement when Montreal and Toronto meet as they do for the first time this season at Maple Leaf Gardens. The Canadiens are in first place with 7 points, one more than both Toronto and Boston, but the Habs will be without Maurice Richard. "The Rocket" was injured last weekend and is expected to be sidelined until mid-November. It is expected Ken Reardon will take Richard's place on the Habs big line with Elmer Lach and Toe Blake. The Detroit Red Wings will be looking to tighten their defense when they travel to Chicago to take on the Blackhawks. Coming off a 6-5 loss to Montreal Sunday the defending Stanley Cup champs have allowed the most goals against so far this season. The other game has Boston visiting Madison Square Garden to take on the New York Rangers. The Bruins are off to a solid 3-1 start including a 4-1 victory over the Rangers in Boston's home opener. New York, on the other hand, is looking for it's first victory after opening the season with three straight losses. The problem is offense, or more precisely a lack of it, as the Rangers have scored just 4 goals in 3 games. Code:

The 21 year old Johnson is now ranked 9th in his weight class world wide. Murphy, a 25 year old from Colorado, has lost 4 of his last 5 bouts and is 24-10 for his career. There is plenty of activity in the light heavyweight division over the next couple of weeks including world champion Archie Moore defending his crown against Tommy Yarosz on November 12th. It will be Yarosz second title shot as he lost to then champion Lloyd Marshall last fall. Speaking of Marshall, he will make his first ring appearance since losing the title to Moore in August when he takes on Billy Conn next Wednesday. Conn is 29-1-2 as a pro and looking for a victory over Marshall as a springboard to a title fight. CANADIAN FOOTBALL WINNIPEG AND EDMONTON BATTLE CONTINUES The battle for first place in the Western Canada Football League will go down to the wire as Edmonton and Winnipeg each won yesterday and remain tied for the top spot. The Eskimoes beat Regina 20-16 thanks to a 110 yard, 2 touchdown effort from running back Billy Vessels. Winnipeg kept pace as kicker Bud Korckak scored 14 points including 4 field goals as the Bombers beat Calgary 20-13. Edmonton and Winnipeg each have two games remaining. The Bombers visit Regina and Calgary while both of the Eskimoes games will be in Calgary against their provincial rivals. First place means little other than bragging rights as the top two teams play a home and home 2 game total points series with the winner advancing to Toronto for the Grey Cup game. Code:

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL TSN UNVEILS IT'S ALL-STAR TEAM It is little surprise that American League triple crown winner Ted Williams heads the list of players named to the TSN 1947 major league baseball all-star squad. Williams and his Boston Red Sox teammate Babe Young both made the squad. The World Champion Chicago Cubs and the St Louis Cardinals also each placed two players on the team. Shortstop Phil Rizzuto and lefthanded pitcher Vern Olsen are the representatives from the Cubs while St Louis sends catcher Walker Cooper and second baseman Gene Scharein. Rounding out the team are Pittsburgh third baseman Bob Elliott, who was the National League MVP, Cincinnati outfielder Joe Medwick, Browns outfielder Wally Judnich, Cleveland pitcher Bill Lohrman and reliever Jack Hallett of the Chicago White Sox. 1947 marked the second year TSN handed out the allstar honours. There are three players who appeared on both last year's and this season squad. They are Williams, Young and Cooper. Code:

North Carolina moves up one spot to number three followed by Mississippi and then the Owls, who crack the top 5 thanks to the victory over the Longhorns. As usual Texas is featured in the list of big games for the upcoming week. Bobby *Layne and the Longhorns seem to face a ranked team every week and this one is no different as they visit #12 Southern Methodist in an SWC game. Second ranked Michigan faces a stern test when the Wolverines travel to Illinois to face the 18th ranked Illini. The score does not sound so bad but that is only because Habs goaltender Bill Durnan stood on his head as his club was outshot 49-7 in the game. Ted Kennedy, with a pair, and defenseman Gus Mortson were the only Leafs able to beat the Montreal netminder. Turk Broda turned aside the 7 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season. Boston handed the New York Rangers their fourth straight loss, blanking the Blueshirts 4-0. Frank Brimsek had an easy time of things facing just 16 New York shots for the shutout. Wally Wilson and Milt Schmidt each had a goal and an assist for the Bruins, who chased New York goaltender just two minutes into the game. Chuck Rayner took over between the pipes for New York after each of the Bruins first two shots beat Henry. Jim McFadden had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings as Detroit beat the Blackhawks 3-1 in Chicago. Ted Lindsay and Don Morrison also scored for the Wings while George Gee had the lone Chicago goal. However, with a year of experience this young team is now loaded. Junior forward Vern *Mikkelsen is likely ready for the NBA now but chose to stay for another year with the Razorbacks. He and fellow junior Terry Medford made the preseason All-SWC team. Sophomore PG Steven LaCroix had some growing pains last season but if he lives up to his potential the Razorbacks may be looking at their second National Title come April. 2- TEXAS CHRISTIAN: The Horned Frogs won 21 games last season including 11 of 14 conference games before bowing out early in the conference tournament. Center Chancy DePascuale is back for his senior season after averaging 13.5 ppg and 12.3 rpg as a junior. TCU had a good recruiting class including Amarillo native Todd xThompson but they will have a tough time keeping up with the Razorbacks. 3- TEXAS A&M: The Aggies have made 3 straight NCAA appearances after not getting a single invite in their first 12 years. Last season were just 7-7 in conference but got hot and won the conference tournament for the first time in school history. Senior swingman Duez Adams averaged over 15 points a game and is joined by sophomore Art *Burris on tbe preseason all-conference team. 4- BAYLOR: The Bears have won at least 20 games three straight seasons and 7 of the last nine years but lost 4 starters to graduation. In their place they have assembled possibly the greatest one season recruiting class in conference history. Among the 6 new recruits are 4 players who will likely be starters before the season is out including 7'1" center Neil *Johnston, who was one of the most prized recruits in the nation. 5- TEXAS TECH: Were 18-12 last season after winning a school record 27 games and reaching the Elite Eight the previous year. The Red Raiders have a good young team led by sophomore scoring whiz Josh Moran but a lack of experience may hurt this year. 6- SOUTHERN METHODIST: After being a postseason regular for most of the first 13 seasons of the league, SMU has gone two years without a tournament invite. Were last in the SWC with a 2-12 record a year ago but the Mustangs return 6 players who averaged at least 16 mpg a year ago. 7- TEXAS: Missed a postseason tournament bid for the first time in school history after a dismal 7-21 season including 3-11 in the SWC. This could be another long season for the Longhorns but they can take comfort in a strong recruiting class including guard Everett Onukogu. 8- RICE: Traditional conference doormat has made just one NCAA tournament appearance and have had 4 straight losing seasons including two years ago when they hit rock bottom after a 5-24 campaign. The Owls improved to 14-15 a year ago. Felton, who is considered one of the best young middleweights in the country, held off an early flurry from the veteran Massachusetts native before taking control in the later rounds. The 27 year old Walker drops to 12-10-1 with the loss. The big boxing story of the week takes place Friday night with a Halloween evening title fight in New Orleans. Undefeated World Featherweight Champion Willie Pep puts his 22-0 record and his belt on the line against Henry Armstrong. Armstrong, a 35 year old with a 31-2 career mark, is considered the 3rd best featherweight in the world behind Pep and top contender Sandy Saddler. It will be Armstrong's first title shot.

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : FRIDAY OCTOBER 31, 1947
BOXING PEP TO DEFEND FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE TONIGHT Between them Willie Pep and Henry Armstrong have a combined record of 53-2 and have beaten virtually every fighter of note in the Featherweight Division. Tonight they will meet for the first time in New Orleans as the undefeated Pep puts his title on the line. Armstrong is 31-2 with both losses coming under controversial circumstances. He was disqualified in a postwar tournament bout against Georgie Hansford and due to a nasty cut above his eye lost by technical knockout to Sandy Saddler last May. Pep, a 26 year old from Hartford, has made 6 successful title defenses since claiming the belt by winning the postwar tournament. In truth Pep has not been seriously challenged in a fight since fellow New Englander Sandy Saddler gave him a run for his money in the postwar tourney championship bout over a year ago. Pep just seems head and shoulders above everyone else he has fought. Perhaps those easy fights make him ripe for an upset as Armstrong enters the fight having had several tough wins over the past year. NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION NATIONALS WIN IN CLEVELAND The Syracuse Nationals won their third straight game, beating the Cavaliers 97-71 in Cleveland. Justin Hild had 27 points to lead the Syracuse attack while center Damond Bothman had 11 points and 17 rebounds. The Cavs, who started the season 7-1, have lost two straight and now lead the Nationals by just a half game in the Northeast Division. The defending league champion Dallas Chaparrals won 86-73 in Indianapolis to get back to the .500 mark. Forward Joseph Cunningham had 23 points and 14 rebounds to pace the Chaps, who are 6-6 on the season. Center George *Mikan had his 7th double-double in 13 games this season for Indianapolis. In the only other game the New York Knickerbockers beat the Pistons 106-92 in Fort Wayne. The Knicks blew the game open in the fourth quarter, outscoring Fort Wayne 36-16 in the final 12 minutes. LAYTON LASHES OUT AT WARRIORS It appears the honeymoon is over in Philadelphia for John Layton. The pressure has been on the entire team after a dreadful 3-9 start but no one has felt it more than Layton who is struggling after signing a big contract in the off-season. Cleary frustrated, Layton hinted after practice today that everyone might be better off if the Warriors traded him. "It's tough," said the obviously dissappointed center. "I wanted to do so much to prove to this organization and the fans that picking me up was the right decision. Unfortunately, it just hasn't worked out so far. I hope it will...but with the booing and what has been going on maybe it is best they made a move." When pressed for an explaination on his thoughts of making a move, Layton decided he did not want to answer any more questions. The Warriors have dropped 6 straight and Layton was booed in each of the last two home games. A three-time Southwest Conference player of the year and an All-American his senior season, Layton has never really been forced to go through a rough spot in his basketball career. He was eased into the lineup in Dallas last year and once he had some confidence he carried the Chaps to the NBA title. A free agent because he was not drafted and signed just a 1 year deal in Dallas, Layton was the subject of a furious bidding war during the offseason with the Warriors winning out. So far, the chemistry between Layton and his teammates, particularily guard Anthony Maggs, has not been there and despite averaging 14.1 ppg and 7,3 rpg the second year star has been wildly inconsistant. Were 11-3 in conference last season before losing in the tournament title game. The Keydets should battle for the title again this year thanks to a strong club led by seniors Cody McCullum and Raj Lockwood. 2- DAVIDSON: The Wildcats have made 6 straight postseason appearances including a trip to the NIT last year after a 19-13 season. Plenty of talent up front led by senior forwards Don Villegas and Jonah Peterson but the backcourt may be a concern. 3- VIRGINIA: Just one tournament appearance in the past 6 seasons, the Cavaliers have struggled of late and were 12-18 last season. Sigfrid Lewis is a magician with the ball when he is healthy. Lewis missed all but one game last season with a broken leg after averaging 9.1 ppg as a freshman. 4- GEORGE WASHINGTON: Won 20 or more games four of the past five seasons. After a 9-5 conference record last season they won the Southern Conference tournament for the third time in school history. Freshman forwards Jon Fry and Logan McLarry will add depth and the Colonials should have another 20 win season ahead. 5- WILLIAM & MARY: Only postseason appearance for the Tribe came in 1936 when they got hot and won their only conference title. 11-19 last season but that was an improvement on the previous two years. Aside from senior center Cleveland Costa there just is not enough talent to compete for the conference title. 6- FURMAN: The Paladins have never played a postseason game and were 15-16 last year. This could be a long season as they have only two returning starters and little depth. 7- THE CITADEL: Claim to fame came at the turn of the decade when in successive years they went to the NIT title game and then the Sweet 16 the following season. The Bulldogs have won 15 games each of the past two seasons but may be hard pressed to do it again. 8- VIRGINIA TECH: Are 9-22 and 7-21 over the past two seasons with a 4-10 conference record each year. BOXING PEP OUTPOINTS ARMSTRONG TO RETAIN TITLE Willie Pep and Henry Armstrong waged what can best be described as a war for 15 rounds at the New Orleans Arena. When it was all said and done the superior conditioning of the champ won out as Pep took control in the later rounds to win a unanimous decision victory. Pep started quickly and shook the challenger with a pair of quick jabs seconds after the opening bell. After being in complete control of the opening round Pep sat back in the second round and Armstrong came to life. From rounds two through eight it would be easy to make a case that the challenger won them all as Armstrong landed the better scoring blows despite being much more economical with his punches. The tide turned as we entered round 10 and Pep landed a quick combination that buckled the challengers knees. Armstrong managed to remain upright but from that point on he was completely outclassed by the energetic Pep. Pep would retain his World Featherweight Title as the bout was scored 144-141, 143-142 and 145-140...all in his favour. With the victory Pep improves to 23-0 and has beaten everyone who is anyone in the division. It is expected his next meaningful defense will be against top contender Sandy Saddler but before then he will probably grab a couple of easy paydays against middle-level pugilists. Armstrong falls to 31-3 with the defeat. COLLEGE FOOTBALL xKUFFREY LEADS BULLDOGS PAST CLEMSON Having to fill the larger than life shoes of Maxwell Award winner Charles *Trippi has not been easy for Steve xKuffrey but the University of Georgia quarterback came up with a solid performance in the Bulldogs 26-7 victory over Clemson. xKuffrey threw a pair of touchdown passes to senior wideout Tyler xGriffin and ran for a third score as the Bulldogs improved to 4-3 on the season. The loss drops Clemson to 4-2. In other action Washington State finally got it's first win of the year beating winless Portland 24-0. Fullback Ken *Roskie scored a pair of touchdowns as South Carolina improved to 3-3 with a 16-7 victory over Miami of Florida. In Southern Conference action Virginia Tech improved to 2-2 with 27-6 drubbing of last place George Washington. Brumsey's backcourt mate Mo Hybarger added 32 points in the victory which improves the Pistons record to 4-5. After starting the season 0-5 the Pittsburgh Pipers won their second straight game, nipping Buffalo 83-81. Ryan Fry led the Pipers with 22 points in a sloppy game where neither side shot more than 35% from the field. Ethan Milner had 25 points to lead the New Orleans Jazz to a 96-90 victory over visiting Kentucky. It was the highest output of the season for the NBA's all-time scoring leader and moved Milner to with 7 points of the 24,000 mark for his career. The next highest scorer is more than 5000 points behind the 14 year veteran. In the only other game Kansas City staged a late rally to beat Milwaukee 82-78. Team leader is sophomore forward Grant Letendre, who had 12.5 ppg as a freshman. 5- STEPHEN F AUSTIN: After a 9-5 conference record last season the Lumberjacks made it to the conference tournament finals. It was their first appearance in the Southland Conference title game since they won their only title in 1934. 6- SE MISSOURI STATE: Three straight losing seasons including 9-21 a year ago. The Indians have plenty of experience coming back but they lack the talent to challenge for a conference title. 7- SW TEXAS STATE: The Bobcats surprised everyone by advancing to the Sweet 16 in 1938, the only such run in conference history. Struggled last season with a 7-22 record but have probably the best pure shooter in the conference in junior guard John Murdock. 8- LAMAR: The Cardinals never won more than 18 games in a season and the closest they came to the conference title was a loss in the tournament finals 3 years ago. NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION MILNER SURPASSES 24,000 CAREER POINTS Ethan Milner added another footnote to the greatest career in NBA history by becoming the first player ever to reach 24,000 career points. Milner had 10 to bring his career total to 24,003 but it was not enough to prevent his New Orleans Jazz from falling 108-105 in overtime to the visiting Indianapolis Olympians. Indy suffered some bad news in the game when center George *Mikan suffered a wrist injury and could be sidelined up to a week. As for Milner, he is closing in on the end of a brilliant 14 year career. The 36 year old was drafted second overall out of SMU in the 1933 draft. He spent the first 10 years with Dallas, the club that drafted him, before signing with New Orleans prior to the 1943-44 campaign. He won two league champions after joining the Jazz and has made the midseason all-star team 13 straight years. Amazingly he has never won a league MVP. The knock on Milner was that he was simply a one dimensional player but he is such a pure shooter that most find it very easy to overlook his other flaws. In other action Syraucse beat New York 109-88 on the strength of a 23 point performance from Justin Rhoad and 21 from Justin Hild. Daniel Swanson had 29 points including a buzzer beater that gave his Milwaukee Hawks a 91-89 victory in Fort Wayne. Ryan Brumsey had 28 in a losing effort for the Pistons. Saturday it was Southern Methodist that put the hurt on Bobby *Layne's squad and scratched out a 13-10 victory. The SMU win really clouds a tight battle for the conference title with just Rice undefeated at this point. Ed Kullman's third period marker would complete the 5-2 victory for the Rangers. All was not rosy as Rangers goaltender Chuck Rayner left the game early in the third period after being hit in the head with an errant stick. Rayner, who took nearly 20 stitches to close the gash, is expected to miss at least three games. In the only other Saturday night contest the Boston Bruins embarrassed Toronto at Maple Leaf Gardens 5-1. Leaf goaltender Turk Broda was fighting the puck all game. Only Syl Apps' third period marker spoiled Bruins goaltender Frank Brimsek's bid for a second straight shutout. Quarterback Butch Songin hit receiver Vito Ragazzo with a 41 yard bomb to give the Tigers a 19-12 victory in Montreal. It was the second time in the game that Songin and Ragazzo hooked up for a major. The victory keeps the Tigers playoff hopes alive as the Toronto Argonauts lost in Ottawa 28-23. If Hamilton can win the season finale in Ottawa next weekend and Toronto loses at Montreal then the Tigers and Argos will be tied forcing a one game showdown between the two clubs to see who meets Montreal for the league title. The playoff participants are decided in the ORFU but there are still plenty of questions heading into tomorrow's season finale as to which teams will pair up in the semi-finals. The top 4 teams make the playoffs as first will host fourth while second entertains third. Out west it has been common knowledge for quite some time that Edmonton and Winnipeg will meet in a 2-game total point final. Regina and Calgary are both eliminated from the playoffs but the Stampeders still have 3 games remaining. It was the first time Bassett had to go the distance as the 18 year old won each of his previous two bouts by knockout. Leslie,a 24 year old from Flint, Michigan falls to 18-17. On the same card lightweight Paddy DeMarco improved to 13-6 with a split decision win over Maxie Docusen. The 19 year old Docusen was thought to be on his way up in the division but he has dropped 2 of his last 3 decisions and is now 8-3 as a professional.
