Wow, an 18-2 win for Starlight. You know who my money is on, even if they're not my team.

Though this comment is more a vehicle to ask a question: What settings are you using for everything? If you don't want to reveal, that's fine, but I vaguely remember a comment when I read the NV Dynasty (I read it super quickly so I might have missed the nuts and bolts) that you adjusted things for more offense?

May 2297 - News and Notes - May 22

I had lots of mistakes in the last two posts. That's what I get for simming three days at a time instead of one, but I was eager to see how the weekend went!

Today in the CBO

News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kowalski

22 May 2297 - BL: Ghouls Beat Assaultrons, 7-3

The The Slog Ghouls picked up a win at Tarberry Field Forever, knocking off the Easy Town Assaultrons, 7-3. Starting pitcher Dan Dozier played a key role in the triumph. Earning his 6th save of the year was Wonder Boy Fultz. The Slog raised its record to 13-8 with the win.

Lernz Tentsleep took Smoker Caliman deep in the bottom of the first. His 3-run home run put the Ghouls on top, 3-0. In all, Tentsleep had 1 single in addition to the home run, while going 2 for 5.

"We'll try to build on that win," Tentsleep told the The Slog Observer.

Other Scores:

Salem 6 at Finch Farm 7, 11 inn.
Led by Ginger Rogers, the Finch Farm Four Leafs defeated the Salem Witch Hats, 7-6. Rogers was 2 for 5 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 2 for the Four Leafs. Finch Farm reliever Chris Farmman picked up the win, upping his record to 2-0. Dan Beantown absorbed the loss. The victory gives Finch Farm a record of 12-9.

The Four Leafs relied on left fielder Danny Honeycutt for the game-winning hit. And, in the bottom of the 11th, he delivered, hitting a run-scoring single to seal the deal.

County Crossing 4 at Nordhagen Beach 11
Dan Neofotistos was a vital contributor to the 11-4 Nordhagen Beach victory over County Crossing. The Party Boys catcher went 2 for 4 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 times and drove in 5. Nordhagen Beach pitcher Casey Diehl got the win, upping his record to 2-4. Zach DiGrande got the loss. The win puts Nordhagen Beach at 8-13.

Early in the game, Neofotistos had a 2-run home run for Nordhagen Beach. It was his 3rd home run of the season and put the Party Boys on top, 2-0.

"We got the Bloodbugs' number," Nordhagen Beach manager Craig Robinson said. "Now let's see if we can pummel Salem next weekend and start gaining some ground."

22 May 2297 - Hit Streak Now at 20 for Bugwing

Nobody has been able to shut down The Slog Ghouls third baseman Stoop Bugwing in recent days. The Easy Town Assaultrons fared no better than the rest.

Today at Tarberry Field Forever, Bugwing picked up 2 hits in 4 at-bats en route to a 7-3 Ghouls victory. It stretched his hitting string to 20 consecutive games.

Bugwing flied out in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th and flied out in the 7th.

This season Bugwing is batting .424 with 39 hits and 3 home runs. He has scored 13 times and has 22 RBI.

22 May 2297 - IL: Lady Killers Knock Off Chemists at Valentine Detective Agency Field

The Starlight Lady Killers beat the Sunshine Tidings Chemists, 4-1. Starlight pitcher and Wrentham, Massachusetts, native Enrique Rodriguez led the way. Sunshine Tidings has now lost 4 in a row.

In the bottom of the fourth, Starlight catcher Hope Scrapper had a productive at-bat. With runners on 1st and 2nd and one out, Scrapper stroked a run-scoring single to center. It made the score 2-1, Starlight. For the game, he was 2 for 4 with a double.

Scrapper called the win "a collective effort."

Other Scores:

Fort Hagen 2 at Lexington 3
Lexington starter Chris Morgen had a strong outing against the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud at Super Duper Mart Stadium. The right-hander was a big part of his team's 3-2 win. In 8.2 innings, Morgen surrendered 11 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 3. He allowed 2 runs. Earning his 10th save for Lexington was Adam Bias.

Justin Daros, who is tied for 9th in the IL in RBI with 15, contributed to the Lexington win with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. For the game, the third baseman had 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 1 RBI.

Abernathy 11 at Concord 3
Abernathy center fielder Radio Short played a vital role in his team's 11-2 triumph over Concord. He went 4-5 with a double, 3 singles, and a walk. He scored 3 runs and drove in 2 for Abernathy. Neil Watson picked up the win with 8 innings of work. He allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, while walking 3 and striking out 5. On the season, he is now 3-4. The 5th-place Adamantium have won 4 straight, helping them climb back in the league race.

Who knows how it might've ended, had it not been for Jim Waples? The Abernathy second baseman had a bases-clearing double in the top of the first inning to put the Adamantium on top, 4-0. For the game, Waples had 1 double and 1 single in 4 at-bats.

22 May 2297 - ML: Hancocks Tag Cats with 7-5 Loss

The Goodneighbor Hancocks beat the Atom Cats by a score of 7-5. catcher Carlos Mungo deserved the lion's share of the credit. Mungo was 3 for 4 with a double and 2 singles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once for the Hancocks. John Oldsink, the winning pitcher, is now 4-1. He went 8.1 innings, allowing 5 runs on 9 hits, while fanning 4 and walking 2. The save went to Matt Rodrigue, number 6 for him.

The game turned with no one out in the top of the fourth when Mungo, who is tied for 8th in the ML in triples with 1, hit a run-scoring double. It propelled the Hancocks into the lead, 3-2.

"We'll pop the top on a cold beverage and get back to work tomorrow," Mungo said.

Atom's current losing streak is now 5 games.

Other Scores:

Quincy 4 at Univesity Point 3
Quincy Gunners starter Ray Human was in a groove as he led his team to a win over the University Point Deathclaws, 4-3. Human went 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 7. His record improves to 5-1. The win gives Quincy a season record of 14-7.

Quincy relied on the bat of Flatface Parker to get the win. The center fielder ripped a run-scoring double in the top of the seventh inning to put the Gunners ahead, 4-0. For the game, Parker had 1 double and 1 triple in 4 at-bats.

Jamaica Plain 1 at Warwick 11
It seemed that Warwick second baseman Brad Krol could do no wrong as the Mirelurks KO'd the Red Rockets, 11-1 today. Krol rapped out 5 hits in 5 at-bats and seemed to know which pitches Red Rockets hurlers were throwing.

Brad Krol singled in the 1st, hit a three-run home run off Chad Adamczyk in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, hit a two-run home run off Matt Mercadante in the 6th and singled in the 8th.

This season Krol is batting .400 with 32 hits, 9 home runs, 26 RBIs, 10 walks, .452 OBP and has scored 21 runs. He has played in 21 games.

22 May 2297 - RL: Yao Guai Top Knuckle Punchers, 12-5, in 11

The performance of Hose Wallcrawler proved critical in helping Fairline Hill Estates beat Shaw HS, 12-5. The Yao Guai shortstop went 4-5 with a home run, a double, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 3 runs and drove in 3. Fairline Hill Estates is 4th in the Railroad League with a record of 10-11.

Elijah Horne had the most critical at-bat for Fairline Hill Estates. With two in the top of the 11th inning, Horne hit a 1-0 fastball from Tom Mannequin for a 2-run single. It put Fairline Hill Estates in front, 7-5. The Yao Guai scored five more runs in the inning.

"Big win," said Horne.

Other Scores:

Oberland 6 at Vault 81 9
The Vault 81 Dwellers topped the Oberland T-51s, 9-6, in Railroad League action at CURIE Inc. Field. The game was highlighted by the performance of Vault 81 first baseman Erns Gold. With the win, Vault 81 upped its record to 11-10.

The Dwellers grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second. With one out, Kevin Morrison, who is tied for 10th in the RL in triples with 1, hit a 3-run home run off Matt Udder, putting Vault 81 in front, 4-0. For Morrison, it was his 1st home run of the season.

Egret 15 at Diamond City 5
With catcher Tony Tamez leading the charge, the Egret Scrappers defeated the Diamond City Swatters, 15-5, at The Great Green Jewel. Tamez, who finished 5th in the RL in RBI with 59 last year, went 3 for 5 with 2 home runs, a double, and a walk, while adding 4 RBI and scoring twice. With the win, Egret raised its record to 11-10.

Egret used a well-timed hit by Kyle Boohoo to capture the win. The first baseman socked a run-scoring double in the top of the sixth inning to put the Scrappers ahead, 6-5. Though it was his only hit in 5 at-bats, it was important.

I let the engine do its thing for stats outputs here. I recently tried adjusting stats in another league and entirely borked the minor league system (the best hitter in a 120-game season was hitting five home runs, so I tried to adjust power. It somehow ended up being where the best batter in the league was batting .200). So, the settings for this dynasty are whatever OOTP decides they should be. I would like for there to be more offense because I think the pitching should be less talented overall in a young league, but I like the balance of the numbers so far: nothing extreme.

Hmmm, that's kind of a shame. I was thinking of messing around with it too, but I guess maybe if I do this is an indication to do so in a test save rather than on my main files

2297 - Week 7 in Review

Analysis

Now we're cooking with petrified driftwood! The yin and yang of life rotates in perfect balance. Down teams are going up and up teams are going down.

If any league can show that more right now, it is the 2296 equivalent of the same situation around this time. The Brotherhood League now has a five-game difference from first place to last, meaning every team is very much in the playoff race again. Still, first-place The Slog and second-place County Crossing and Finch Farm look to have the advantages, but Easy Town, Salem, and Nordhagen Beach can all be in this.

It was mentioned before that there is something about the Party Boys playing County Crossing. This season, that is true just like it was last season. Nordhagen Beach beat County Crossing again, foiling the Bloodbugs' plans to move into first place. Nordhagen Beach is now 4-2 on the season, and also currently is 2-1 versus Finch Farm. The Party Boys are the Ghouls' best friends at the moment. Next week, Nordhagen Beach gets a chance to avenge the sweep at the hands of Salem, which could see the Party Boys right back in the mix. The bullpen has been looking much better as of late, and the Boys could be a force if the starters catch up.

A shock on the weekend was Oberland coming back down to the wastes in the Railroad League. The T-51s had not lost a season series in the first six weeks, but Vault 81 took care of business at home, sweeping Oberland and moving into a second-place tie with Egret. Though the Dwellers have not been a good pitching team, they held Oberland to 13 total runs in the series, a huge accomplishment for the team 6th in the Railroad League in starters ERA (6.96).

The team that we really need to talk about is Goodneighbor in the Minutemen League. With the sweep of Atom, the Hancocks have now won six straight and 16 of their last 17 games. The team that won the Battle for the North Tournament in the preseason looked shaky to start the regular season, losing their first four games. However, that was the exception to their season. At this rate, no other team, in the CBO looks even somewhat as good.

For the rest of the ML, Quincy and Warwick are notches ahead of the rest of the league, meaning this is truly the only division where some teams are not at all in the race. The Cats and Jamaica Plain are both 6-15 and eight games back of second-place Quincy. That would mean a full turn around in the next seven weeks just to be in the race. In a 20-week season, that is not very likely more than 1/3 of the way through the season.

In the Institute League, there is not much change, but defending league champions, the Abernathy Adamantium, have now won four straight to pull back into the pack. At 8-13, the Adamantium are not quite ready to declare themselves playoff ready, but they have pulled even with Concord, whom they swept, and sit just a game back of fourth place Fort Hagen. Add to that, the last place team in the IL is only seven games back of first place, so this is another league like the BL where the full league is still up for grabs.

If you do want certain outcomes, I would recommend asking in the main forums what other people have as their numbers. That could help reaching the outcomes you want for sure. However, yes, a test league is better. Or duplicate your current save as a different file name and then try out different settings.

I still need to tweak different things here and there that I see are not running as expected (like not every league electing award winners in 2296 because I had myself voting but I am only allowed to vote in one league--why that is an OOTP setting is beyond me). I will eventually combine the four leagues, but for now they are separated.

May 2297 - News and Notes - May 24

Today in the CBO

News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kowalski

24 May 2297 - Players of the Week

BL Star of the Week Named: So far in his young career, Brian Masterson has kept a low profile, but after his performance at the plate last week, he attracted the notice of the rest of the Brotherhood League in a big way as he was named the Player of the Week today for his efforts.

The 18-year-old Nordhagen Beach Party Boys second baseman hit at a torrid .500 clip as he collected 7 hits in 14 at-bats, 1 home run, 3 RBIs and 5 runs scored.

This season Masterson has hit at a .424 clip and produced 10 runs batted in, 3 home runs and 30 runs.

Settler Selected Top Player: It's always a thrill for fans of the team and students of the game alike when a superstar in the making shows what he's got. Steve Settler, the Abernathy Adamantium 25-year-old first baseman, put himself in the spotlight last week making him the clear-cut choice for Institute League Player of the Week honors.

He ripped 10 hits in 15 at-bats, compiling a .667 average with 1 home run and 3 RBIs.

Currently Settler is hitting .378 and has collected 6 home runs, 21 RBIs and scored 14 times, while playing in 21 games.

Costantino Week's Top Player: Stuart Costantino is respected by most Quincy Gunners fans for his no-frills style of play. The 18-year-old catcher went about his business with vigor last week to grab the Minutemen League Player of the Week honors.

He compiled a .455 average (5-for-11) with 2 home runs, 6 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

Hitting .318 to date, Costantino has 3 home runs and 22 RBIs. He has played in 21 games.

Gold Takes This Week's Trophy: It can be difficult for a young player to step out of the shadows and assert himself in the Railroad League, but last week Erns Gold of the Vault 81 Dwellers reminded everyone just why he's here as he threw up numbers that made him an easy selection for Player of the Week. Gold rocked opposing pitching for a .667 average (8-for-12), 6 home runs and 8 RBIs to come away with the award.

Currently Gold has 12 home runs and a .333 batting average.

Get to Know Your Settlements, Owners, and Corporations

Today in the CBO

Settlements Today

by Nat Wright-Kowalski

25 May 2297 - Diamond City

On certain Tuesdays for the 2297 season, we will feature one of the settlements, teams, and owners of the Commonwealth Baseball Organization. This is meant to tell you more about life in the Commonwealth, as well as give you more information about the teams and their owners. These will be done at Nat Wright-Kowalski's availability

In our twenty-second installment of "Settlements Today," I went nowhere. No, I stayed home. In all of the Boston-area of the Commonwealth, Diamond City is the one area that has semblance of an urban lifestyle.

Of course, Diamond City has now changed its location, though the name has remained. Before, DC was located inside The Great Green Jewel.

Diamond City 2287 - When the city was inside The Great Green Jewel

According to a terminal on the past of Diamond City, "Diamond City was founded in the 2130s in Fenway Park[2] and quickly established itself as a safe haven for settlers of the Commonwealth, thanks to what its residents affectionately referred to as "the Wall." Later decades saw Diamond City grow into the Commonwealth's largest and most prosperous community.[3] It developed a degree of social stratification as wealthier residents came to occupy properties in the settlement's exclusive upper stands; these overlooked the lower field where everyone else strived to make a living.[4]

"In 2180, the Commonwealth Minutemen defended the city from an attacking horde of super mutants. This caused the faction's eventual rise to fame."

The first Institute attack came in "The Broken Mask Incident" in 2299 "when a man calling himself Mr. Carter arrived. At first, the people of the city warmed to Mr. Carter, but while he was drinking at the bar that occupied the center of Diamond City's marketplace, he went berserk and killed several residents. When security personnel killed Mr. Carter, they discovered he was a synth created by the Institute. From that moment on, the people of Diamond City lived in fear that they would be covertly replaced by synths."

There is more history to the city. Read the terminal entry here: https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Diamond_City

When Nate Howard arrived, the first person he met was the one and only Piper Wright who was in a tiff with then-mayor McDonough. While the city was concerned by the citizens disappearing without a trace, the mayor was not. He also kicked all ghouls out of the city. Unbeknownst to the citizens, McDonough himself was a synth replacement of the human McDonough, John Hancock's brother. Diamond City eventually became a central hub in Nate's investigation into the disappearance of his son and the development of a centralized government.

Diamond City 2297 - Residential Neighborhood in Hangman's Alley. Check out this build at: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/38303

After Nate had brought peace to the Commonwealth, Mayor McDonough was ousted and Nate's friend Robert MacCready took over the post. MacCready was born "in 2265 in the Capital Wasteland to parents he never knew, MacCready became the head of the Little Lamplight children's colony in 2274, when he was only ten years old. After Princess declared herself the new Mayor and renamed the position after herself, her rule lasted about five minutes, until MacCready punched her in the face and stated that Little Lamplight needed a leader, not a princess. MacCready's coup resulted in him becoming mayor. The other residents respected him for his smarts, toughness and the juvenile lack of fear of anything – be it monsters, adults or using his rifle on anything that looked at him funny, not to mention the ability to maintain Little Lamplight as a viable community."

Mayor MacCready - Read his full bio at: https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Robert_MacCready

As a mayor, MacCready is considered a good leader. His ability to be diplomatic when necessary and decisive in other situations has shown a wisdom that few others can exhibit. Only Nate Howard himself could be a more popular male.

Diamond City - City of Lights

Owner - Moe Cronin

When Nate Howard met Moe, Moe was known as "a 'baseball' enthusiast," who "sells customized baseball equipment and apparel for the sole purpose of killing." Moe believed that "baseball was: two teams armed with deadly modified baseball bats battling to the death. The baseball bats of the surviving winners of the game were called 'swatters' and therefore set the tradition of 'next-generation baseball.' He also believe[d] that baseballs were given to the children of dead players, baseball gloves were used to absorb bullets, and that baseball cards kept track of a player's kills."

Moe outside his original Swatters, Inc. stand in Diamond City

Once Nate taught Moe about "real" baseball, Moe took a liking to that sport better than the one he made up in his mind. Moe asked Nate that he use his business to be the official bat of the CBO, and that's how Swatters, Inc. moved from being a business that made swatters as kill weapons and into baseball bats that have led to over 1500 home runs and counting.

Diamond City will always be a special place. It's a shame they are not doing so well in the standings.

Yeah, I was hoping they would start off as baseball gods. I mean, the Diamond City Swatters were at the top of my list for team names. Number one. Had to be. And then who else to lead the Swatters than Moe Cronin himself? Now, Moe begged Nate to stay as manager. He was almost willing to sell the team to become its manager. Nate told him he needed to be owner, that's where Moe needed to be. Moe has a problem of taking new information and adopting that information as though he always knew it. Nate tried to explain to him the concept of small ball, in which Moe is definitely not a fan, by the way. However, Moe knew nothing about small ball. Never imagined the concept. And then he started rattling off about how his coach in grade school tried small ball tactics and it cost them the Atlantic championship. We all know Moe didn't even know what happened in the sport of baseball before Nate told him. We also know that no one was PLAYING baseball before Nate and the Mysterious Stranger got that all started up. So Moe spouting off about small ball in the Atlantic, or, as I'm guessing, along the Atlantic, is utter nonsense.

Moe also has not learned from his past mistakes. His personnel is one of the most questionable around the league. He hired old Tommy Doddy, his friend, as GM, as well as his friend Mike Birtwell as his bench coach. Moe wanted Birtwell as the manager, but Nate overruled that one, said he wants competitive teams, not ones led by rambling idiots. Moe had no choice but to hire a different manager, but he may have picked the 24th best one, Bucky Bachelor. Bucky had his time, and now at 48 he thinks the ladies are swooning over him in his position of power. If he would spend more time shuffling the lineup cards to find the right mix, he might win more games. Instead, he's out blowing kisses and drinking at Mike 'N' Ike's bar after the games telling how great he did or how it was someone else's fault when his team lost. The hitting coach Brandon Jones and pitching coach Brent Younger are no better. Where they lack in experience they make up for in apathy.

All these problems with how the Swatters are operated, last in their league, only a game up on the CBO's two worst teams in 2297, Atom and Jamaica Plain, and then I look at Moe's mood and he's ecstatic. Ecstatic! Your team is .333, you galoot. You wanted the team to improve its OBP because now you're the world's expert on OBP, which you first thought meant "Other Baseball People," and your team went from 4th last season to currently 6th. You want your team to play CLOSE to .500 ball, but they're seven away in 21 games, and you're ECSTATIC?!? I am pissed. Nate should be pissed, too, and boot Moe's incompetent ass right out of the league. At this rate, the best thing about the team will always be the stadium they play in. The team itself is a hot mess right now and not looking up in 2297, and probably no time soon after that. The Sox may win another championship before the Swatters do; it's that bad.

TBH the line for when you correct him about what baseball is when first meeting him is a bit overly harsh, I think it catches everyone by surprise the first time they select it as they didn't intend to be quite *that* mean, but you've just made me feel like Moe deserves it.

25 May 2297 - Robotics Expert Star to Attend Leadership Conference

The General Atomics Galleria Robotics Experts are storming through the early 2297 season. With an 18-4 record, the Experts are up 5 games on second place Greentop Nursery.

Because there is a large cushion, when the opportunity came for leadoff hitter RF Curtis Yellallot to attend a leadership conference in Diamond City, General Atomics Galleria manager Alfredo Barlos agreed.

"I don't mind Curtis missing a weekend," Barlos said. "Hopefully he gets some good tips to make him even better. He is always our rah-rah guy, anyway, always getting the rest of the team engaged in the game. It wouldn't hurt to get more perspective."

The Robotics Experts play a two-game home set against the Outpost Zimonja Strongbacks (10-11) this weekend.

Yellallot has started all 22 games in right field this season. He is batting .353 with 11 doubles, four home runs, 21 runs, and 14 RBI.

26 May 2297 - Gunkill Has Illness, to Miss Series

Vault 81 Dwellers CF Steve Gunkill has developed an unknown illness. Though the illness is not severe, he was not feeling well and asked to sit out practice. Today Vault 81 Clinic's Dr. Jacob Forsythe put him into quarantine under Marie Cure's care.

"Steve has some symptoms similar to mole rat disease," Dr. Forsythe said. "We have seen this before. We had a cure years ago, but we are currently out. Hopefully Curie can get him back on the right track if that is the case."

It is unknown how long Gunkill will be out, but the Dwellers could always use his bat. His numbers are a bit down this season. In 21 games, he is batting .277 with three doubles, four triples, four home runs, 16 runs, and 14 RBI. His four triples lead the Railroad League.

26 May 2297 - Laughingman Ain't Joking

Salem catcher Mike Laughingman won the Brotherhood League defensive award in 2296. This season, he has set his sights on different goals.

"I want to be the best," Laughingman said with a straight face. "Playing the game does not mean I can't be serious."

Laughingman has been spending a lot more time with hitting coach Matt Firewood. Firewood described Laughingman's progress as "full potential."

When asked to explain more, Firewood said that Laughingman still needs to work on strength but he could be a star player in the league if he can pull it all together. "He is hitting the ball well this season, but I could see him being even better, especially when it comes to home runs. He doesn't yet know how to control the bat to get the best swing."

So far in 2297, Laughingman has shown decent improvement with his bat from 2296. He is currently batting .377 (.242 in 2296) with exactly 20 hits in 14 games started; he had 50 hits in 53 games last season. He only has one home run on the season, but he only hit four in 2296.

"He's been showing some signs of improving his numbers all around this season," Firewood said. "His average is up, his OBP is up, his slugging. He just needs to find ways to turn base hits into extra-base hits. Then he's a star."

Of his 20 hits, only four have been for extra-base hits: three doubles and a home run.

That's Moe. Always rattling on about things. Ask him to swing one of his "genuine swatters." It's like an elephant swinging a tree trunk. All that power, no direction. Yeah, Moe needs to be put in his place sometimes.

Well, I have a busy day of work meetings today. I'll try to get to Week 8 action, along with May players of the month and a BMU update, this evening.

It could have been a different outcome for County Crossing, had it not been for Dave Tattoo, the 28-year old center fielder . Tattoo contributed a run-scoring double in the top of the seventh inning to put County Crossing up, 1-0.

27 May 2297 – IL: Adamantium Stay Hot, Beat Chemists, 11-7

The rain could not dampen the enthusiasm of Abernathy fans at Tato Field.

The Abernathy Adamantium grabbed a win, 11-7, over the Sunshine Tidings Chemists at Tato Field. Abernathy shortstop Austin Engill went 3 for 5 with 2 doubles. He drove in 4 runs and scored once. The Adamantium, at 9-13, have now won 5 straight.

Making an impact for the home team was Radio Short. In the bottom of the sixth, the 30-year old center fielder had a run-scoring sacrifice fly. That made the score 7-5, Adamantium.

"We'll kick back tonight, then get set for the next one," Engill said.

Rapid Roberts, credited with the win, is now 2-0. He allowed 4 runs on 6 hits. With the win, the Gunners have a record of 15-7.

"I just tried to make good contact," said Driftwood.

Other Scores:

The winner in relief was Chris Leggman. He is now 1-0. The right-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit in 1.2 innings. Atom, with the win, sits at 7-15.

A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. With the game tied in the bottom of the 12th, an error by the Mirelurks allowed the Cats to score the winning run.

"I had pretty good command out there," said Mannson.

The win has Diamond City at 8-14.

Other Scores:

Oberland 7 at Shaw 1
The Oberland T-51s beat the Shaw HS Knuckle Punchers, 7-1, at Atomatoys Stadium at Roxbury. The T-51s got a fine performance from left fielder Prof Castillo, who was 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 3 times and drove in 3. Oberland raised its record to 15-7 with the win.

The winner was Bow Rome, who threw 127 pitches over 6.1 innings. The right-hander was charged with 3 runs on 6 hits. With the win, Fairline Hill Estates upped its record to 11-11.

Today in the CBO

News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kowalski

28 May 2297 - BL: Ghouls Beat the Knickers Off Four Leafs, 19-2

The Slog shortstop Lernz Tentsleep was a significant contributor in his team's 19-2 triumph over the Finch Farm Four Leafs. He went 4 for 4 with a home run, a double, and 2 singles. He scored 3 runs and drove in 3 for The Slog. The Slog has now won 4 straight.

With The Slog leading 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Tentsleep hit a fastball from Steve Rocky for a run-scoring double. It was his 7th double of the season and put the Ghouls ahead, 2-0.

"If the personal accolades come, so be it," said Tentsleep. "I just want to win ballgames."

Finch Farm manager Wiley Boat was not happy after the game. "I need more effort, more heart. Two games into this series, and we don't look like we want the prize. I want the prize. I need the players to go there with me."

Other Scores:

Salem 2 at Nordhagen Beach 3
The Nordhagen Beach Party Boys got a stellar performance from pitcher Tommy Beach, who handcuffed the Salem offense en route to a win, 3-2, at Slocum's Joe Seaside Stadium. Sia Abber earned the save for Nordhagen Beach, his 7th of the year. Nordhagen Beach has now won 4 games in a row.

Nordhagen Beach took a 3-2 lead on Matilde Moody's 2nd home run of the season. The 2-run home run came off Salem pitcher Front Porch Potter in the bottom of the seventh.

County Crossing 11 at Easy Town 14
Benefiting from Joe Ransom's productive game, the Easy Town Assaultrons downed the County Crossing Bloodbugs, 14-11. Ransom went 4 for 6 with a home run and 2 doubles. He scored 4 times and drove in 3 for the Assaultrons. David Tech was the winning pitcher. Over 5.2 innings, he allowed 6 runs on 11 hits, with 1 walk and 6 strikeouts. Aaron Geneva recorded the save, his 5th.

Ransom contributed a big hit, a 3-run home run, for Easy Town in the bottom of the second. With his team trailing 2-1, Ransom took a fastball from Blaine Phrasemaker and stroked the home run to right. His 4th home run of the season allowed the Assaultrons to leap in front, 4-2.

28 May 2297 – IL: Win Streak Now at 6 for Adamantium

Sunshine Tidings shortstop Chris Wickliffe had a good game in a losing cause. His team fell, 5-4, to Abernathy at Tato Field. Wickliffe went 2-4 with a home run and a walk, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. Abernathy pitcher Joe Penaltybox got the win, upping his record to 3-4. Tim Fusion got the loss. T-Bone Heagy earned the save, his 4th.

A critical at-bat came in the bottom of the seventh inning when the Adamantium sent 19-year-old shortstop Austin Engill to the plate with a runner on 3rd. The youngster shook off the pressure and grounded out, driving in 1 run, to put Abernathy on top, 5-0.

In postgame comments to the Abernathy Herald, Engill said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."

Sunshine Tidings has now lost 6 consecutive games.

Other Scores:

Lexington 5 at Concord 12
Getting a good performance from left fielder Dan Erb, the Concord Radstags defeated the Lexington Synths, 12-5. Erb went 4 for 4 with 2 doubles, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 2 for the Radstags. Concord reliever Burt Oldshoe was the winner. His record is now 1-0. The losing pitcher was Lawdog Whipple.

The Radstags got a big at-bat from first baseman Jason Robinson. For the game, Robinson was 1 for 5 with a double. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the sixth, with runners on 2nd and 3rd, he stroked a 2-run double. His 4th double of the season gave Concord a 7-5 lead.

Fort Hagen 2 at Starlight 6
The Starlight Lady Killers picked up a win at Valentine Detective Agency Field, knocking off the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud, 6-2. Starting pitcher Jonathan Newman was a big reason why. The first-place Lady Killers have won 5 consecutive games.

Newman allowed 2 runs over 8 innings. He also racked up 9 strikeouts.

28 May 2297 – ML: McDuff Fires Shutout in Gunners Victory

Manny McDuff of the Quincy Gunners whitewashed the Goodneighbor Hancocks 10-0 in a complete-game win, limiting them to 4 hits while chalking up 9 strikeouts and giving up 3 walks.

"He's got the makeup. He's not afraid to challenge guys," Quincy manager Kevin Banner said to BNN reporters after the game. "Manny is poised out there. He knows how to pitch and how to use his stuff."

In 8 starts this season McDuff has recorded a 4-2 record and a 4.14 ERA.

Other Scores:

Jamaica Plain 6 at University Point 2
The Jamaica Plain Red Rockets dealt the University Point Deathclaws a 6-2 loss at Gwinnett Brewery Park. David Seaweed was the star on offense. He was 3-4 with a home run, 2 singles, and was hit by a pitch. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2. The win gives the Red Rockets a record of 8-15.

Jamaica Plain relied on the bat of Cody Flatt to get the win. The first baseman ripped a 3-run home run in the top of the third inning to put the Red Rockets ahead, 5-0. For the game, Flatt had 1 double and 1 home run in 5 at-bats.

Warwick 3 at Atom 9

The Atom Cats topped the Warwick Mirelurks, 9-3, in Minutemen League action at Coolest Field in Town. The standout performance belonged to Atom pitcher and Woburn, Massachusetts, native Jesse Emacipated. In 9 innings, Emacipated surrendered 8 hits, while striking out 6 and walking 1. He allowed 3 runs. Atom, with the win, climbs to 8-15.

The Mirelurks had their chances. In the top of the fourth, Shane Noteman took a 1-2 fastball and hit a bases-clearing double, putting Warwick down only 5-3. However, they were never able to produce any more scoring opportunities.

28 May 2297 – RL: Swatters Come Back Late to Top Dwellers, 10-7

The timely hitting of Waze Waiting helped the Diamond City Swatters down the Vault 81 Dwellers, 10-7. Waiting went 1 for 1 with a home run. He drove in 3 runs and scored once for the Swatters. The win was credited to Ricky Six Pack in relief. His record improves to 2-2. Josh Mustang took the loss. Josh Samm nailed down his 6th save.

Waiting had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the eighth. On a 2-2 changeup from Josh Mustang, he banged a 3-run home run to right-center, giving the Swatters a 8-7 lead. It was the 2nd home run of the year for Waiting.

"We were able to get some things going offensively," said Waiting.

The Swatters go to 9-14 with the win.

Other Scores:

Oberland 11 at Shaw 7
The Oberland T-51s grabbed a win, 11-7, over the Shaw HS Knuckle Punchers at Atomatoys Stadium at Roxbury. Oberland left fielder Prof Castillo hit 2 home runs. He drove in 5 runs and scored twice. With the win, Oberland upped its record to 16-7.

Oberland took a 8-6 lead on Jeremy Bugs's 8th double of the season. The 2-run double, which Bugs hit in the top of the eighth, left Shaw HS pitcher Kyle Grogg visibly frustrated.

Fairline Hill Estates 8 at Egret 5
All game long, Fairline Hill Estates's Noah Arch was rattling the walls at Fallon Field at Egret Tours Marina and banging out base hits against the Egret Scrappers. When the dust finally settled on the diamond, he had a 5-hit day and the Yao Guai had a 8-5 victory.

Noah Arch singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 4th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 8th.

In 23 games this season Arch is batting .407 with 44 hits and 3 home runs. He has scored 22 runs and driven in 19.

28 May 2297 - Finch Farm Four Leafs Ship Thompson to County Crossing

After Friday's blowout loss, Finch Farm agreed to ship 25-year-old LF Machete Thompson, 18-year-old minor league 3B Taygun Topaloglu and 18-year-old minor league LHP Jesse Bibeault to County Crossing for 32-year-old RHP Blaine Phrasemaker and 20-year-old minor league RHP Punky Shaum. The deal is awaiting confirmation from the league office but neither team expects any hang-ups.

"It wasn't a move I expected to make coming into the day," said Four Leafs GM Nick Jones, "but we knew that the deal was going to happen."

So far this year Thompson has hit .417 with 3 home runs, 3 RBIs and 5 runs scored.

This year Phrasemaker has posted a record of 3 wins and 4 losses with a 5.93 ERA. He has appeared in 8 games and struck out 42 in 41 innings. In today's 14-11 loss at Easy Town, Phrasemaker allowed six earned runs on five hits with two walks and a strikeout in 3.0 innings.

This move looks like two teams frustrated with their loss today. It will be interesting how this move shakes up the Brotherhood League going forward.

And now The Slog one-upped those wannabes at the Drive-In.

Abernathy won the game in the bottom of the tenth inning. With no outs and Tiny Greene on the mound for Sunshine Tidings, right fielder Donny Kowalski hit a dramatic solo home run, bringing Adamantium fans to their feet.

"It's a satisfying feeling to win like we did," said Watson.

Fort Hagen used a timely hit from Andre Grogg to get the win. The pinch hitter stroked a 2-run double in the top of the seventh inning to put the Silver Shroud ahead, 9-8. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it made an impact.

Lexington 2 at Concord 10

Had Prince Billingsley not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Billingsley hit a 2-run triple. That made the score 7-5, in favor of the Swatters.

"We were able to get some things going offensively," said Billingsley.

Other Scores:

29 May 2297 - Kovalenko Brawls with Cats Fans

Warwick Mirelurks starting pitcher Dave Kovalenko pitched the win in today's 7-3 victory.

Though the win was great, Kovalenko took exception to Cats fans taunting him after the game. While fans were yelling insults at him, Kovalenko took it personally and attacked two fans.

Mirelurks manager Old Man Langford was not happy with Kovalenko. "We preach keeping a level head in all situations. I don't know what he was thinking by punching out fans. Let them talk. We still won the game. Now we lose Dave for awhile.

Because of his actions, Kovalenko is expected to be suspended the next two weekends, meaning a six-game suspension. He will have to miss his next two starts.

2297 Week 8 - The Week in Review

Analysis

Three league leaders sit with a 17-7 record, showing what it takes to have the top record in the CBO. However, Brotherhood League leader and reigning CBO champions The Slog is probably the hottest of the league leaders at 16-8. The Ghouls play in a tough league from top to bottom, with the preseason pick for last place, Salem (9-15), currently there but they have a respectable record and team that could beat anyone else.

Remember when the Abernathy Adamantium were down and out this season? Yeah, me neither. The Adamantium are the CBO's hottest team, winning seven in a row and 9 of 10 to move from a 2-12 start to rage back at 11-13. Now Abernathy is tied for 3rd in the Institute League. Other than Starlight, in 1st place at 17-7, the rest of the IL should be afraid, very afraid.

Abernathy is doing it with good pitching and timely offense. After sweeping Concord and Sunshine Tidings (currently on a seven-game losing streak and currently tied with University Point with the coldest streak of 2-8 over the last 10 games), the Adamantium have now put themselves in great position.

With star player and reigning MVP Austin Engill still struggling, the Adamantium still have high hopes that they will just keep getting better once Engill turns it on. Right now > Jim Waples leads the team with a .413 average. Leadoff hitter Radio Short is batting .394. Multiple players have driven in multiple runs. Abernathy is still only 4th in runs scored (122), but they are trending up.

After Diamond City woke up (ramblings and rumblings from the gods?) and swept Vault 81 over the weekend, the battle for the wildcard in the Railroad League has become interesting. It would be great if a race like this could continue all season. Right now, Fairline Hill Estates and Egret currently sit in a second-place tie at 12-12. The Dwellers are 11-13, and Shaw and the Swatters are tied for fifth at 10-14. Those are five teams with a two-game difference! It seems that the Yao Guai and Scrappers are the two true teams in the race, but there are 36 games to letterkenny that.

Nordhagen Beach has put itself in a better position in the Brotherhood League with two straight winning weekends. One note about the Party Boys that should be encouraging is that the bullpen ERA (4.54) has now moved to 2nd in the Brotherhood League, and closer Sia Abber now leads the BL in saves (7). While the starting pitching mostly struggles, Julian Shed and Tommy Beach had solid starts. However, the offense has been second-best only to 1st place The Slog. Leadoff hitter Brian Masterson has been on fire, hitting .429 on the season, leading the CBO in runs scored (33), and currently in MVP talks. Michael Fogcrawler is in the home run race with 8 to go with 28 RBI.

The gap in the Minutemen League between 1-3 and 4-6 continues to widen. The Quincy-Goodneighbor series was excellent in showing the two teams looking strongest this season. With the Gunners taking the series at Goodneighbor, the Gunners may have taken the true momentum in the league. Quincy now has a 5-1 season advantage over the first-place Hancocks and a 4-2 advantage over Warwick. Continuing that success would give them tiebreakers at the end of the season.
