MY LIFE IS NIFTY IN 1950
How do you do, it's EC... I'm back again. Uh Oh!... time really passes quickly when you are having fun and enjoying life... it's now August... four more weeks and it's back to "readin', 'ritin' and 'rithmetic"... Labor Day and September is just around the corner... school resumes the day after Labor Day. After spending a lot of the summer in Alabama, I'm back home in New Orleans... wow, we are moving from a tiny 2-room apartment to a half a house on Downman Road... yep, literally half a house... the owner lived on one half and my family on the other half... we now have a living room, two bedrooms and a kitchen... even an enclosed back porch... and a huge backyard when we can play baseball and football... how about that!... we must be moving up in the world. The neighbors next door even have a TV... the only family on Downman Road that had one. Wow! Get a load of all we can watch on TV, if we had one... one whole channel... uh oh, no binge watching for us in 1950... there is only one channel... absolutely no reruns... actually the first runs were not worth watching, but we didn't know it back then... WDSU-TV, channel 6 is the only game in town... and it's only on the air from about 2 pm to 10 pm... if you really had a hankering to watch TV, you could watch the test pattern for a while beginning, I think, at 1 o'clock... nothing much was on until about 4:45 when the cowboys started ridin', ropin' and shootin' up the range... Hoppy is on at 5:45... and a quiz show Beat the Clock is at 7. It's Saturday night and I will entertain myself listening to the radio... 'cause that's all we got... no TV in our house yet... I always listen to Gang Busters on Saturday night... it comes on at 8 pm. Gang Busters featured interesting and dramatic crimes from the files of law enforcement organizations all over the country... it was a network program from 1936 to 1957. The show opened with a barrage of blaring sound effects – a shrill police whistle, convicts marching in formation, police siren wailing, machine guns firing, and tires squealing. Then an authoritative voice would announce the title of that night's program: "Tonight, Gang Busters presents the Case of the —." Finally, the opening would end with more blasts from a police whistle. This intrusive introduction led to the popular catch phrase "came on like Gangbusters." My gosh... you folks are getting quite a education here in this thread. You can listen to the Gang Busters' opening here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIzgfdV4lkg Just a very quick body count, I think about 488 people perished in two minutes of the opening credits of Gang Busters... eat your heart out, Clint Eastwood... your spaghetti westerns couldn't compare with Gang Busters. Right below is the radio program schedule for the evening... you'll also see the TV schedule just in case you have a TV and want to watch... I think radio is better... I have a choice between Gang Busters, Your Hit Parade, The Louisiana Hayride, a live country music radio show from KWKH in Shreveport, Louisiana and the New Orleans Pelicans playing the Memphis Chicks in the Southern Association baseball league with the "Old Red Head", Ted Andrews, doing the play-by-play. Life is good... life is good today... as we say in Southern parlance, y'all... My life is shore 'nuff nifty in 1950. Last edited by Eugene Church; 07-23-2019 at 07:27 PM. |
