As a Blue Jay fan at the time I will never forget this game and that "dirty" slide committed Bill Madlock. Cost the Blue Jays the AL East Title and possibly a trip to the World Series.

Blue Jays shortstop Tony Fernandez; attended by trainer Tommy Craig grimaces with pain after being upended by Bill Madlock of the Tigers at second base -- and with good reason. X-rays showed Fernandez had a broken right elbow; sustained when he came down hard on a seam dividing the dirt from the turf; and he's gone for the season with a broken elbow.

Toronto shortstop Tony Fernandez walks off the field holding his elbow that was fractured against the Tigers. His loss; particularly on offence; has hurt the Blue Jays greatly.

- Here are the four star players of the St. Louis Cardinals, who won the National League championship today by defeating the Brooklyn Dodgers 8 to 4 in the second game of the 2-out-of-3 playoff series at Ebbets Field, breaking the National League pennant tie. They are (L to R): Whitey Kurowski, Enos Slaughter, Marty Marion and Stan Musial, with their shirt numbers reading 1-9-4-6, indicating that the Cards are the National League champions for this year.

The slide was pretty bad, but Madlock had nothing to do with the decision to install artificial turf at your stadium. Wonder how many players lost years off their careers playing on that crap. Oh and the inability to touch the great Frank Tanana was the main reason Toronto didn't make the post season. As for y'all making the World Series, sorry but no one and I mean no one was going to deny the great Juan Berenguer in 1987.

No matter how many times I re-watch the 1987 ALCS and World Series, I still cannot believe the Minnesota Twins Won it all.

Of course, if you ask a St. Louis Cardinals Fan they will probably tell you it was all due to the Balking of the Twins pitchers. Remember, Cardinals Manager Whitey Herzog complained that Twins' pitchers were not stopping in their sets.

Berenguer Says No More Gestures

As a Tiger fan 84 was the best thing ever, but that race in 87 was right there in terms of excitement. So much fun. Still think Toronto and Detroit belong in the same division.

@prisonerno6: Awesome pics as usual. I forgot about wanting to post Bumbry. I remember watching him during batting practice one day down at ole Exhibition Stadium and seeing him take a double crow hop before firing the ball in. Used to take the double crow hop in CF during warmups back in the schoolyard. Funny the things you pick up and remember from big leaguers as a kid.

That slide by Madlock on Fernandez still upsets me because that team had a great chance to do some special things that year, but alas it was not to be. Maybe I should just let it go, but the teenager in me won't allow it.

Whitey Kurowski eh? He's done alright in my historical random debut so far. A 5-time All-Star with 4 Silver Slugger awards and 253 HR. Looks like he's close to the end at age 38 though, but he didn't last past age 30 IRL.

And how can anyone forget Buddy Biancalana (David Letterman certainly made him a legend) or Casey Candaele? Or the fact that at the time, everybody thought the Padres had won the Templeton-Smith trade in a landslide...But that's what happens when you forget about defense isn't it? Great stuff as usual.

Teams in the 1980s that should have won more than just One (1) Championship.
St. Louis Cardinals - 1982 (Lost World Series in 1985 & 1987)
Detroit Tigers - 1984 (Lost ALCS 1987)
New York Mets - 1986 (Lost NLCS 1988)
Oakland Athletics - 1989 (Lost World Series 1988 & 1990)

Although I am not a Los Angeles Dodgers fan by any stretch of the imagination, I truly believe that Franchise greatly under performed in the 1980s. Sure the Dodgers won in 1981 & 1988, but see the 1980, 1982, 1983 and 1985 teams. Especially the 1982 team, how do you loose the West to the Atlanta Braves that year??

I know he's already been posted, but I'm a Japan fan and when one has the opportunity to post pics of legends with legends ... I gotta do it! We've got OH himself, with Hank Aaron in '84 and with my favorite manager Sparky Anderson in Tokyo in '81.

As this is OOTP, Kenny Williams, a current executive for the White Sox and former GM, wore the number 1 during his time as a player for the Chicago White Sox.

Additionally, the first citizen of the United States, the one and only president, Barack Obama dreamed of playing with the White Sox.

Yuki Matsui of the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles. They were an expansion team that was added when I was living in Japan, so I could cheer for them and be a day 1 fan.
