September 1877
1st October 1877 The season fell apart for the Cincinnati Reds fans as their team managed to go the whole of September without a win. This poor performance saw angry fans writing nasty letters to this newspaper shouting for the front office to be fired. While we don't condone some of their words we do share some of their sentiment. The Owner duly noted these letters and fired Manager Ken Fletcher at the end of the month and replaced him with Nelson Chapman who has spent his whole career as manager of the single A Daytona Cubs. The fans are hoping this change will bring new life to the team next season. Batting was poor in September as the team scored only 26 runs all month. None of the batters showed good form but the players with the best average was Second Baseman Bob Ferguson. Ferguson saw 38 at bats in 9 games starts. He managed to hit the ball 11 times during these at bats for 2 runs and 4 RBI's. His average was a poor .289 The pitching for the month tried its best but was never going to win the games when the batting was so poor. Lon Knight was the starter in all 9 games and pitched 70 innings. He gave up 101 hits and 22 earned runs. This saw him post an ERA of 2.83. The team gave up 63 runs in total during the month. Full pitching stats for September Full batting stats for September The Reds played 9 games in September The Reds were swept 0-3 in all three series played in September The first team to sweep them was the Chicago White Stockings 1-7, 4-7 and 0-4 They were then swept by the Boston Red Caps. 1-2, 4-5 and 6-10 The final team to sweep them was the Brooklyn Atlantics. 2-4, 4-8 and 4-6 The Reds finish their season with 3 final games in October. September 1877
1st October 1877 The Cleveland Blues poor second half of the season form continued as they picked up only 2 wins and 6 losses in September. This has left the fans of the Blues again resigning themselves to probable off season shake ups for the front office and another bottom half table finish in the AL. They sit bottom half a game behind the Baltimore Orioles. The batting scored a fairly low 34 runs during the month. No batter showed form during the month. The best was Dave Eggler who posted an average of .265 from 34 at bats in 8game starts. He picked up 9 hits, 5 runs and 2 RBI's during the month. Amos Booth picked up the AL Rookie of the Month award. The pitching of Tricky Nichols was steady and would have won more games but for the poor batting. He started all 8 games and pitched 62 innings to give up 77 hits and 20 earned runs. This gave him an ERA of 2.90. The team gave up 50 runs in total. This saw them move 2.5 games clear in second place in the AL table. This though also so them slip out of the pennant race but the fans are not to worried about that after the start they had to the season. The batting picked up 40 runs during the month of September. The star with the bat was Cap Anson. Anson showed the coaches why they have been wrong all season by leaving him on the bench. He picked up 12 hits from 34 at bats in 8 game starts. He also managed 5 runs and 6 RBI's for an average of .353. Tom Barlow returned from injury at the end of the month and may make a final appearance in the final 4 games. End of Season 1877
7th October 1877 The fans of the Orioles have seen a disappointing season from their team this year. The team played average ball or just below all season apart from a winning record in August to finish 3rd in the AL table with 27 wins. This makes it 3 seasons now since the team picked up its last pennant and the fans are starting to call for changes to try and get them back to the top spot. The team finished the season with a loss and 2 wins against the Cleveland Blues 3-10, 13-7 and 6-5 The players this year failed to show much star quality. The only real star for the year was Pitcher Cherokee Fisher. 32 year old starting pitcher Cherokee Fisher had another solid season for him. He started 48 of the games and pitched 388 innings. He saw an ERA of 2.67 for this work as he gave up 115 earned runs. The batting struggled all year and no batter posted an average above .280. This has the fans worried and feel that it needs to be freshened up. The best batter turned out to be Short Stop George Wright. 30 year old Wright had an average season for him as he started all 60 games and faced 253 at bats. These at bats saw him claim 70 hits along with 25 runs and 28 RBI's for an average of .277 Full pitching stats for the season Full batting stats for the season We will bring you all the off season news once the first year draft has been completed. |

End of Season 1877
7th October 1877 The fans of the Red Caps are finally celebrating a season of success. The team have won their first NL pennant after 7 attempts. The team led the race from the start and were never seriously challenged as they took the title. The team won 39 games during the year and never had a losing month. The team now looks forward to the MLB Championship Series against the AL's Philadelphia Athletics. The fans hope the team has enough to take on the reigning MLB Champions. The team cliched its play off spot with a win over the Chicago White Stockings 6-2. They then followed up with a 2-1 series win against the Brooklyn Atlantics 7-0, 10-0 and 1-16 The players that helped the team to the title include Short Stop Jimmy Hallinan and Pitcher Tommy Bond. The 28 year old Hallinan has proven over the years that he is a solid starter for the team. This year he stepped up his game to produce his first best season of his career. He started all 60 games and had 258 at bats. These at bats saw him collect 83 hits on his was to 48 runs and 23 RBI's for an average of 3.22. The pitching of Tommy Bond has been a revelation this year as he helped the team to its first pennant. The 21 year old had spent 3 years learning his craft as a reliever for the team before taking the starting job from Bobby Mathews during spring training this year. He started 46 games and pitched 378.2 innings. This work saw him give up 90 earned runs for an ERA of 2.14. End of Season 1877
7th October 1877 For the fifth time in seven years the fans of the Atlantics have had to witness another poor season as the team finished 4th in the NL table. The fans are hoping that the team and owner will take another look at the players and front office and try to find the balance that is needed to get the team back to a winning record. The team picked up only 22 wins during the season and were always likely to finish in the bottom half as they never got going. The team finished the season in poor form as they lost 1-2 against the Boston Red Caps 0-7, 0-10 and 16-1 The player that produced while those around him struggled was Catcher Bill Harbridge. Harbridge, the 22 year old three year veteran, has come to the fore this season as he put up his best numbers of his young career. He started all 60 games and had 240 at bats. These at bats saw him score 38 runs and 23 RBI's from 77 hits. He also picked up an average of .321 for the year. The pitching struggled this year. 23 year old starter Joe Blong saw a poor year on his way to an ERA of 3.36. He claimed this ERA from 57 starts with 441.1 innings pitched. He also gave up 165 earned runs during the year. End of Season 1877
7th October 1877 The fans of the White Stockings are not happy about the fact that their team has given up their NL pennant this year. While the team did try to make a fight of it towards the end of the season they were never close enough to be in with a chance to take the title. The fans will be hoping that a piece or 2 can be added to the mix during the off season to bring the team back to the level needed to take the NL pennant back. The team lost the pennant to the Red Caps by losing a game against them 2-6. They then finished the season with a whimper as they went down 1-2 against the Cincinnati Reds 3-8, 8-2 and 6-8. The stars for the season were Starting Pitcher Jim Britt and Catcher Charlie Mills. While Britt is a veteran of 6 seasons he is still only 21 and always seems to perform. He gave another solid season this year for the team as he started 57 games and pitched 472.1 innings. This work load saw him claim another steady ERA of 2.52 while giving up 132 earned runs. One big part of his season was the 200 win mark that he reached. As well as the 200th win Britt also picked up a new 1 season high of 165 strike outs during a season. The batting was steady for most of the season from the starters. The best of them came in the form of Catcher Charlie Mills. The 32 year old Mills is a veteran of 7 seasons but this was his first year as a regular starter. He started 46 games and saw 189 at bats during these games. He managed to pick up 58 hits along with 29 runs and 19 RBI's for an average of .307. End of Season 1877
7th October 1877 The Reds fans saw what they felt was a poor season this year. This culminated in the month of September that saw the team lose all 9 games and the sacking of the Manager. The team finished 3rd in the NL table. The fans will now be watching the player movement this off season to see if there is any improvement to the team from the new manager. The team finished the season with a 2-1 win against the Chicago White Stockings 8-3, 2-8 and 8-6 The stars of the show came in the form of Catcher Cal McVey and pitcher Lon Knight. The batting through the team seemed to have an excellent season finding the hits. The issue was turning these hits into runs as they finished with the least runs during the season. 28 year old Catcher Cal McVey was the player the best average during the year. He started 46 games and had 221 at bats during the year. These at bats saw him clip the ball 75 times for an average of .339. These figures earned him the NL Batting crown as the player with the best average. The pitching during the year was mixed as the team used 2 starters over the season. The player that started the most games was Lon Knight. He started 39 games and pitched 304.1 innings for an ERA of 2.40. The other 21 games were started by Bill Stearns who pitched 185.1 innings for an ERA of 3.40 Full pitching stats for the season Full batting stats for the season A full off season round up will be bought to you after the first year player draft. |

End of Season 1877
7th October 1877 The fans of the Blues saw another bad season from their team as they finished last again in the AL table. They were happier with the start of the year as the team managed to stay in contention for longer but still fell away after the All Star game. The fans will be looking for an off season that can produce the balance required for the team to find form. They finished the season with a 2-7 loss against the St Louis Brown Stockings and a 1-2 series loss to the Baltimore Orioles 10-3, 7-13 and 5-6 The team had very few stars in the season. The one bright spark was on the mound in the form of Tricky Nichols. The 26 year old starting pitcher Tricky Nichols is a veteran of 3 seasons. This was his second as a starter and his best of the 2. He started 57 games and pitched 475.0 innings for an ERA of 2.43 along with 128 earned runs against him. The batting was poor all season with no player getting average over .300. The player with the best average was 28 year old Left Fielder Dave Eggler. Eggler, a 7 year veteran, started all 60 games and had 244 at bats. These at bats produced 71 hits that saw him score 37 runs and 27 RBI's. End of Season 1877
7th October 1877 The fans of the Athletics are all anticipating another wonderful MLB Championship Series after their team took their 3rd AL pennant in 3 seasons. The team led from the front all season and were never under any threat of losing their AL pennant. The team won an AL league high of 40 games on the way to the pennant. The Athletics will now face the NL's Boston Red Caps for the MLB title. The team warmed up for the Championship Series with a 3-0 sweep of the St Louis Brown Stockings. 4-2, 10-3 and 4-3 The stars of the season were all over the team but if we had to choose a couple of players we would opt for pitcher George Bradley and Short Stop John Peters. The 27 year old, 4 year veteran, Peter had the best season of his career so far. He started all 60 games and saw 253 at bats. He managed to hit the ball a high 95 times in these at bats. This led him to have the best average in the AL of .375 along with 45 runs and 32 RBI's. This work saw him claim the AL batting crown. 24 year old Pitcher George Bradley continued to show why he has been the starter for the Athletics these last 2 seasons. He started 55 games and pitched 464 innings to post an ERA of 2.27. He gave up 117 earned runs. One good piece of news for Bardley saw him claim the 1 season record for shut outs with 3 in the season just gone. End of Season 1877
7th October 1877 The fans of the St Louis Brown Stockings have been frustrated all season. The team management seems to be happy to leave special players like Cap Anson on the bench while playing others that do not have the same skills. This worries them as it leaves the team down the table. This year the team managed to finish second but it was shown in September how well the team can play if all their best players play. The fans hope that next season will see more games for the best players. The team finished the season by winning 7-2 against the Cleveladn Blues before being swept 0-3 by the Philadelphia Athletics 2-4, 3-10 and 3-4 The stars with bat and ball this year were Pitcher Geroge Zettlein and Left Fielder George hall. The only batter that put up a decent fight all season was Left Fielder George Hall. 28 year old Hall is in his prime and started all 60 games during the year. He had 241 at bats and produced 83 hits for an average of .344. He also scored 33 runs and 31 RBI's. George Zettlein continued to be the starter for the seventh season. Zettlein started 56 games this year and pitched 457 innings. This work saw him give up 116 earned runs and produce an ERA of 2.28. Play Offs 1877
13th October 1877 The Fans of the Red Caps are painting the old city red tonight as they celebrate a surprisingly easy 4-0 MLB Championship Series win against the Philadelphia Athletics. Game one was the closest of the four played if you looked at the score line. The game itself didn't play out that close though. The team jumped to an early 2-1 lead after four innings and never looked back as a 3 run blast in the 7th and 2 runs in the 9th won the game. Joe Battin had an excellent game as he picked up 4 hits and 2 runs. Terry Larkin was the winning pitcher after he let only 3 earned runs go in a complete game pitched. The second game of the series saw the Red Caps struggle to begin with as they went down early 1-2 at the end of the 3rd inning. This though didn't show what was to come next as the team blasted 4 runs in the 4th to win the game. The rest of the game was quiet. Their was no star on the batting line up as it was a team effort that won the game. The pitcher that picked up the win was Bobby Mathews. Mathews pitched all 9 innings and gave up no earned runs. The third game of the series saw the Red Caps in full form as they shut out the Athletics 5-0. The runs came in the 2nd with 2, the 5th with 2 and the 6th with 1. This was again another team performance with the bat as most players helped to win the game. The star of the show was starting pitcher Tommy Bond. He pitched all 9 innings and gave up 0 hits and 0 earned runs to claim a no hitter in the biggest game of his career (missed the perfect game due to an error by the fielders) The final game of the series saw the way the pitching has been the class of the team all year. The pitching let an early run go before again shutting the opposition down while the batting managed to finally get on top of the opposition pitching. The win went to Terry Larkin who pitched all 9 innings for 0 earned runs against him. The best batter was Levi Meyerle who picked up 4 hits and 1 run during the game. 13th October 1877 The fans of the Athletics cannot believe how easily their team gave up their MLB Championship title. The team were rolled over 0-4 by the Boston Red Caps and were never in any of the games. The first game of the series saw the Athletics put up the only fight they did all series. They were 6-1 down going into the 8th inning but then put up 3 runs to bring it close before finally losing the game. The team seemed to be able to find the hits during the games as they had 14 but couldn't find the runs as the Red Caps pitching and fielding managed to keep them fairly quiet. Dick McBride picked up the loss as he pitched 8 innings with 3 earned runs against him. Game 2 saw the Athletics form collapse as they finally ran out of steam for the season. The team managed to get out to an early 2-1 lead by the end of the 3rd inning but were then shut out for the rest of the game as they saw the Red Caps win the game with a 4 run 4th inning. The batting was a complete disaster as they picked up only 4 hits for the 2 runs scored. The losing Pitcher was Dory Dean who pitched 8 innings for 4 earned runs against him. If you were a fan of the Athletics watching game 3 of the MLB Championship Series then all you could do was sit their and take the beating and applaud an excellent performance from the opposition pitcher. The team just didn't turn up as they saw a no hitter pitched against them in a 0-5 loss. The final game of the series continued to highlight the differences in the hunger between the 2 teams in this series. The Athletics jumped to an early 1-0 lead after innings 2 before they were again shut down by the Red Caps and saw 7 unanswered runs put past them through the rest of the game. The pitching and batting again did not turn up as no body performed. Last edited by amead17; 02-22-2015 at 03:51 AM. |
