Is it a coincidence that perhaps the two greatest pitchers in Batty history, Fred Heimach and George Van Haltren, both were drafted in the 2nd round?
(or in other words, we both lucked into these guys)

My kingdom for a Catcher or a decent SP. Seriously, all of my minors can go except Kuenn. I can also move OF Johnny Mokan who's hitting well and needs a chance. PM me here if interested. Looking for SP's who can post a 4.00-4.50 ERA.

1926 Amateur Draft
This year's draft was heavy on hitting (see: Chance, Frank - he of the across the board eights in talent) and excruciatingly light on pitching. Nevertheless, three teams went with the mound-types in round one (including the Yankees with their #1 overall choice).
In fact, pitching was so thin that eight of the LAST nine picks were all pitchers - because nothing else was left. Only C Hugh Poland, this year's Mr. Irrelevant, spoiled the tend. Round 1: New York (A) pick: P Bill Singer Brooklyn pick: 1B Frank Chance Washington pick: RF Tris Speaker Boston (N) pick: C Jason Kendall Chicago (N) pick: P Bill McGunnigle Cleveland pick: RF Jose Canseco Chicago (A) pick: C Biff Pocoroba New York (N) pick: SS Billy Grabarkewitz Cincinnati pick: LF Danny Hoffman Pittsburgh pick: LF Chuck Essegian Boston (A) pick: 2B Heinie Reitz Detroit pick: P Bill Laskey St. Louis (N) pick: LF Matty McIntyre St. Louis (A) pick: RF Lou Clinton Philadelphia (N) pick: CF Larry Rosenthal Philadelphia (A) pick: LF Clyde Vollmer Round 2 : New York (A) pick: C Ed McFarland Brooklyn pick: CF Jo-Jo White Washington pick: CF Podge Weihe Boston (N) pick: LF Joe Riggert Chicago (N) pick: C Johnny Edwards Cleveland pick: 2B Dick Egan Chicago (A) pick: 1B George Rohe New York (N) pick: SS Marty Marion Cincinnati pick: C Bruce Benedict Pittsburgh pick: CF Tom Goodwin Boston (A) pick: LF Terrence Long Detroit pick: 3B Al Rubeling St. Louis (N) pick: CF Hub Northen St. Louis (A) pick: C Ed Whiting Philadelphia (N) pick: C Amos Cross Philadelphia (A) pick: RF Bubba Morton Round 3 : New York (A) pick: CF Maurice Archdeacon Brooklyn pick: C Chris Bando Washington pick: 3B Hensley Meulens Boston (N) pick: CF Bud Hafey Chicago (N) pick: SS Mickey Klutts Cleveland pick: P Howard Ehmke Chicago (A) pick: RF John Tener New York (N) pick: LF Chad Allen Cincinnati pick: P Johnny Morrison Pittsburgh pick: P Bobby Jones Boston (A) pick: P Jack Dunn Detroit pick: 1B Tom Alston St. Louis (N) pick: SS Bill Morgan St. Louis (A) pick: SS Ed Busch Philadelphia (N) pick: P Ted Blankenship Philadelphia (A) pick: C Otto Denning Round 4 : New York (A) pick: P Frank Smith Brooklyn pick: P Dick Woodson Washington pick: SS Moe Berg Boston (N) pick: P George Spencer Chicago (N) pick: SS Al Pedrique Cleveland pick: 2B Tilson Brito Chicago (A) pick: C Harry Smith New York (N) pick: P Jose Santiago Cincinnati pick: P John Reccius Pittsburgh pick: P Earl Caldwell Boston (A) pick: P Jack Leary Detroit pick: P Joe Bowman St. Louis (N) pick: P Bucky Brandon St. Louis (A) pick: P Clint Sodowsky Philadelphia (N) pick: P Galen Cisco Philadelphia (A) pick: C Hugh Poland

1927 Amateur Draft
Another draft that was big on hitting and low on pitching (which really sucks when you only have 9 pitchers total in your organization, and are having to consider using a guy with 2-3-3 ratings as your set-up guy...). That being said - Albert Pujols was the consensus number one -and went to the Yankees - There was then a series of decent players. The White Sox may have got a steal with Granny Hamner at 13. Forturnately the AI finally recognized the Cubs dilemma and picked some pitchers in rounds 3 and 4.
As was true last year 9 of the last 10 players picked were pitchers. Oh, and Bernie Williams went to the Yankees - because I think there's a rule that forces that. For the Cubs - every draft pick is up with the big club this year. Which goes to say more about our depth than anything. And Joe will get back to doing these next week - I'm sure...... Round 1: New York (A) pick: 3B Albert Pujols. Washington pick: P John Ward. Brooklyn pick: C Earl Smith Boston (N) pick: 3B Bill Melton. Chicago (N) pick: P Trevor Hoffman. New York (N) pick: LF Jackie Jensen Pittsburgh pick: 3B Howard Johnson Cleveland pick: CF Burt Shotton St. Louis (N) pick: RF Jesse Barfield. Philadelphia (A) pick: RF Taffy Wright Detroit pick: C Josh Phelps. Cincinnati pick: 3B Randy Ready Chicago (A) pick: SS Granny Hamner. St. Louis (A) pick: P Randy Gumpert. Philadelphia (N) pick: C Lloyd McClendon Boston (A) pick: 3B Vin Campbell Round 2 : New York (A) pick: CF Oddibe McDowell Washington pick: 3B Brook Jacoby Brooklyn pick: 2B Paddy Baumann Boston (N) pick: P Trevor Wilson. Chicago (N) pick: 3B Willie Kamm New York (N) pick: 2B Eric Young Pittsburgh pick: SS Art Fletcher Cleveland pick: LF Derrick May St. Louis (N) pick: SS Neal Ball Philadelphia (A) pick: RF Bob Coluccio Detroit pick: 1B Art Shires Cincinnati pick: RF Eddie Wilson Chicago (A) pick: SS Bill White St. Louis (A) pick: SS Dave Chalk Philadelphia (N) pick: CF Oris Hockett Boston (A) pick: RF Chuck Workman Round 3 : New York (A) pick: LF Bernie Williams Washington pick: P Paul Hartzell Brooklyn pick: P Turk Farrell Boston (N) pick: C Frank Roth Chicago (N) pick: P Paul Byrd New York (N) pick: P Bert Inks Pittsburgh pick: P Ray Herbert Cleveland pick: 2B Joe Harrington St. Louis (N) pick: P Greg Swindell Philadelphia (A) pick: RF Otto Vogel Detroit pick: P Ismael Valdez Cincinnati pick: P Travis Miller Chicago (A) pick: RF Homer Peel St. Louis (A) pick: P Russ Kemmerer Philadelphia (N) pick: P Earl Francis Boston (A) pick: P Tom Murphy Round 4 : New York (A) pick: P Blas Minor Washington pick: 3B Art Scharein Brooklyn pick: P Steve Hargan Boston (N) pick: C Scott Hemond Chicago (N) pick: P Ted Abernathy New York (N) pick: 1B Joe Moffett Pittsburgh pick: P Doyle Lade Cleveland pick: P Bob Allen St. Louis (N) pick: P Rick Honeycutt Philadelphia (A) pick: P Juan Acevedo Detroit pick: P Chad Ogea Cincinnati pick: P Tim Lollar Chicago (A) pick: P Brian Holman St. Louis (A) pick: P Zeke Wilson Philadelphia (N) pick: P Chuck Rainey Boston (A) pick: C Alex Gaston |

I have no clue how I'm still in 1st place. Unlike previous years, this team is built on hitting. Pitching is ancient and dreadful, but not as dreadful as everyone else's.....
