I have exactly the same opinion in reverse. I cannot bear watching hockey, except one old US-USSR Olympics game where they battered each other instead.

while I cnat' see them getting to the semis, the fact that they are not the strongest team speaks volumes for the future of African footie.

The semis might be a stretch, but if they avoid the 3 or 4 top teams who are actually on form (Argentina, Spain, Holland, maybe Italy), who knows? I remember Cameroon in the early 90s announcing the "arrival" of African football, and technically even Togo are much better than they were then. The tempo and energy with a bit of skill is a powerful combination.

We must be getting close here.

Not counting OT posts of course
Actually not even. The record is something like 4,000 in the talk music or talk lunch thread.

I think if you're brought up on sports where this is more scoring then of course you're not going to like soccer, that's fair enough.

I think the NASL is a major cause though for soccer to be so far behind the other four. They brought in all these foreign stars at the end of their career to play, but once they'd gone, they hadn't brought any American star soccer players through, and so people just didn't want to turn up to see a load of junk American players.
If they had done the league then, like the MLS has done now, especially as the amount of TV coverage of other sports then was much less than it is now, I feel that soccer would have had a much better chance of gaining a much bigger foothold on the American psyche than it does now.

I've heard that if one of them reaches the quarterfinal, Africa will get an extra, sixth, slot in 2010.

Asia and Oceania should merge into one group, and after Australia moving to the AFC they probably will in the future, but other than that it's fine as it is IMO.

they may have been foreign stars, but here the average American had no idea who they were...they needed to build American talent from the start
