Driscoll dominates Corbett to retain title
December 15, 1907
Jem Driscoll (28-5) scored a UD15 over #4 Young Corbett (14-12-4) to win his first title defense. Driscoll wore down Corbett in the middle rounds. Corbett was cut under his right eye in the 8th. Driscoll then dropped the challenger in the 11th and again in the 14th to cruise to a lopsided decision. I had it 145-140, T.C. Dale ringside had it 146-139. The official judges scored it 146-140/143-140/146-138. On the undercard .. Good undercard with 4 undefeated fighters putting their records on the line HW - Joe Jeannette (13-0) UD10 Jim Flynn (13-7) MW - Paddy Purtell (8-9) TKO9 Joe Thomas (9-1-1) FW - Johnny Kilbane (6-0) vs. Black Griffo (2-9-1) (Kilbane fought at pp in this club fight) Mw - Sailor Burke (6-0) UD8 Dave Kurtz (5-2) (both fighters at pp for this club fight) BW - Harry Ware (4-11-1) UD10 Johnny Reagan (3-14) (club fight) |

Johnson defends title for the 16th time
December 18, 1907
Jack Johnson (28-1) scored a KO11 over Sam McVey (17-4) to retain his LBA Heavyweight title for the 16th time. McVey took control of the fight in the early rounds and appeared to be cruising to an upset win. Johnson won round 3,6, and 9 and visable hurt McVey in all 3 rounds. Both of McVey's eyes were swollen but he was still ahead 7 rounds to 3. Johnson dropped McVey mid-way through the 11th. McVey got up and appeared to make it through the round but was dropped again with 3 seconds left and couldn't beat the count. On the undercard MW - Rube Ferns (20-10) KO4 Stanley Ketchel (18-4) (Ketchel was incomplete control of this fight, having knocked down Ferns twice, until he was caught with a one punch KO in the 4th) BW - Kid Murphy (10-0) MD10 Monte Attell (8-2) FW - Eddie Lenny (6-3-2) DRAW8 Fred Delaney (5-1-1) (both fighters at pp for this club fight) MW - Kid Broad (6-0) SD8 Joe Costa (7-2-4) (both fighters at pp for this club fight, Costa moves up to the main division by virtue of his 13th fight) HW - Jack Stelzner (14-17-3) DRAW10 Bill Squires (8-11-1) |

McCoy destroys Fitzsimmons (YES THAT'S RIGHT) to retain title
December 23, 1907
What might be called a Christmas Miracle Charles McCoy (19-7-3) stunned the boxing world with a KO5 over #1 Bob Fitzsimmons (24-4). Many felt it was a forgone conclusion that Fitz would get his title back in this fight, but McCoy had other plans. After losing the first round and getting cut under his left eye in the second, McCoy dropped Fitz in the 3rd. He pounded away on Fitz until the bell rang and started Fitz's right eye to swell. McCoy then dominated the 4th and dropped Fitzsimmons for good in the 5th. The crowd sat in stunned silence. It was McCoy's second defense of his title. On the undercard BW - Tommy Kelly (14-12-2) TKO10 Joe Wagner (10-8) LHW - Pete McCoy (15-15-1) TKO4 Morris Harris (7-10) (McCoy stepped up to LHW for this win) BW - Chappie Moran (15-17-2) UD8 Hank Brennan (5-2) (brennan fought at pp for this club fight) LW - Arthur Chambers (6-1) UD8 Billy Frazier (14-18-1) (Chambers fought at pp in this club fight) LHW - Duncan McDonald (10-15-2) UD10 Morris Heffey (9-16-1) (club fight) |

Thats a shocker, Fitz seems good for coming out totally flat every once in a while and getting upset, this reminds me of his loss to Joe Goss in my universe. Are you planning another fight between the two?
BTW happy impending anniversary on the Universe, you have done a great job with this and I have always enjoyed following along. |

Well done Mike, Happy Anniversary. I can't even stick with a universe for more than a couple of months, so this is an amazing effort.

Nelson wins on a night of ties
December 27, 1907
Battling Nelson (16-12) scored a UD15 over #1 Frank Erne (12-2-2) to defend his LBC Lightweight title for the first time. It was a very close back and forth match. Both of Erne's eyes were swollen at the end of the fight. Nelson suffered a cut over his right eye. Erne was penalized a point in the 9th for head butting. I had it 143-142. Ringside expert Darryl Woodford had it 144-143. The official judges had it 144-142/144-142/144-141. On the undercard HW - Frank Slavin (18-10-1) TKO5 Peter Maher (14-13-1) LW - Harry Gilmore (19-12-1) DRAW10 Patsy Sweeney (8-8-2) LH - Charlie Haghey (7-0) KO4 James Barry (7-2-1) (both fighters fought pp for this club fight) LW - Charley White (6-4-1) DRAW10 Barney Donovan (11-17-2) (White fought pp for this club fight) LH - JH Brown (9-12-3) DRAW10 Mike Kine (8-14-4)(club fight) |

Nelson is better than his record indicates ... I think the LW division is pretty tough right now ... I don't have my game up but I know he lost to Gans a couple of times and McAuliffe. I thought Erne would win but Nelson did enough for the victory

Austin upsets Moran for Bantamweight title
December 30th, 1907
Watty Austin (10-8-1) gave champ Owen Moran (20-5-3) all he could handle in April before losing a UD15. This time Austin pulled off the upset winning a MD15. Austin came out fast and finished strong to win the decision. Moran was dropped in the first round, but got up to drop Austin in the 4th. Moran controlled the middle rounds but then lost the last 5 rounds to lose the fight. I had it 144-141. Walt Arnold ringside had it 145-140. The official judges had it 144-140/142-142/144-141. On the undercard WW - Jack Britton (12-2-1) UD10 Mike Sullivan (10-12-4) HW - Jack Burns (11-4) UD10 Hank Griffin (12-6-2) LHW - Mike McCoole (10-10-2) UD10 Jack Graham (7-5) HW - Peter Courtney (8-1) KO1 Mick Dooley (7-20-1) (Courtney fought at pp for this club fight, moves to main division with the win) WW - Owen Ziegler (7-14) TKO6 Billy Devine (4-14-3) (club fight) |

December 1907
Is over and so is the year. The fights for December are posted below.
Something new for 1908 .... all fighters with 31 or more fights will have a chance to retire at the beginning of each year. Their % will be based on how many fights they have .... it will go up 1% for every fight. So if a fighter has 31 fights he will only have a 1% chance of retiring. If he has 40 he will have a 10% chance. This way I will have some fighters with good records retire. I realized just now that I had been doing the career stage wrong also. I thought career stage had an effect on active fighters. It doesn't so I will change all my active guys to retired so career stage will come into effect. A breakdown of stats and rankings for each division will follow. Check the LBA retired thread for fighters retiring. Last edited by mh2365; 04-15-2007 at 07:11 PM. |

Also any fighter who retires prime will have a 50% chance of returning the following year, a 25% chance when they are 2 years gone. Then they stay retired. If they come back they fight until they lose then they are done for good. |
